Today Nintendo held a conference to formally announce its Nintendo WiFi plans for Japan and announce two new games.
The NCL post mostly reiterates Nintendo WiFi details Nintendo of America disclosed last week, such as the unique key assigned to a DS and the buddy list. Nintendo NCL also elaborated on its USB wireless router adapter, powered by Buffalo Technology and featuring its AOSS security management system. This suggests Nintendo DS will also work with existing secure wireless networks. The only supported OS mentioned is Windows XP. Nintendo WiFi will also be accessible through 3000 free hotspots throughout Japan, as previously announced.
Nintendo also announced two new Touch! Generation titles. The first title, due out in January, is designed to help Japanese adults improve English skills, using both character recognition and voice input. The second game is a sequel to the popular Work Your Brain game (which has already seen shipments of 800,000 copies in Japan) and comes out on December 29th

Looks like I'll be buying myself one of thos wi-fi usb connectors.
Does this work if your internet connection 'isn't Broadband?' i have AOL but it's a dial-up modem?
Will it still work? The UK USB one is coming out in November as well right? Or will i have to import?
:wtf:

56K? If so I imagine you would have a massive ping, I don't know if it would work or not though but I'm guessing it would be too slow.
If you've got dial up broadband then it will work fine.

According to Play.com it comes out on the 11th of Novemeber. Which would make sense considering a lot of people will need them to play online, and I would assume there is no difference in the actual hardware just in the packaging/ leaflet.

European price for Nintendo WiFi USB Connector will be around £30 (about 45 euros) according to NoE. Also, Mario Kart DS has now officially delayed to November 25th.

Owen, you cant use a dial up modem. Get yourself Broadband - its very easy, doesnt hold up the phone line and not any more expensive than dialup!! Theres NO reason not to.
And im a little disppointed with all the news today, I thought they'd really go into the service, I also expected lots of online extras!! Maybe thatll be for the Revolution!!
This came up unexpected didt it:)

mario kart in europe is delayed until november 25th, which now means that europe gets wifi last + no animal crossing. They give with one hand then slap you with the other.

but they havent given us anything now so they didnt give with one hand more like pretending to give with one hand and then slapping us in the face with the other.

So in other words, they screwed Europe over again.
I'm just wondering if anyone's importing Mario Kart now from the US at all? Because I'm extremely tempted to chuck a pre-order down with VGP+.

My thoughts exactly! Although it may be delayed in the USA as well! :wtf:

I wonder if the USA version of Mario Kart will work online in the UK?
That conference was unexpected and quite uninformative. Nothing much we didn't already know. I just want to know HOW it will work.
I really hope Mario Kart DS includes some kind of online pictochat function for pre and post race chat. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't.
The delay of Mario Kart in the UK doesn't come as a surprise and it isn't that much longer.

Importing is the solution for me.

will the wifi connection stick only allow my DS and (in the future) revolution use the internet connection, or will that be an option? because I don't want a wifi network, but I do want my DS and revolution to be online.

Is this their BIG unveiling of their WiFi Service?! If so then its a joke - theres abolsutely NOTHING here I didnt know already, except the confirmation Mario Kart is delayed, whichi s obviously great news. Though to be honest, is it delayed, didnt they just say November?! Anyways, its only 2 weeks.
I'm more bothered about the fact we havent heard anything about the service, or may there isnt anything to know - I though they'd unveil website and exactly WHAT you will be able to do online on Mario Kart - download other peoples ghosts etc. Download new tracks in the future would be great. creating tracks would be even better!!!
Unless of course, all you can do is race against people, which says that yes NIntendo will succeed in getting more people to play online, but fail in many peoples belief that when 'Nintendo go online, they will show people how to do it properly!!!".
Theres a lot more to come, I suppose I just wish they told us today!!

Some people still can't get Broadband, he might be one of those.
You will be able to use a dial-up modem, but it will be laggy as hell. I wouldn't even bother trying.
£30 for the USB adaptor? What a rip-off! Go on eBay and get a new Wireless G one for £5!

I have a feeling that's all it is going to be. I was hoping for chat at least. Build your own character would have been cool, as would downloading new tracks that you mention above.
I guess Animal Crossing will have the chat, they just need to get used to the WIFI connection.

Really? I'm not really a 'online gamer' you see, it doesn't really appeal to me that much, i never had Xbox Live either.
I can get Broadband i believe, i think i will try and get some more info on it soon and see if it can be done, i would like to have it mainly for use with the Revolution.
Hopefully get it by the end of the year, early next year.
and then i can BEAT YOU ALL at Mario Kart....cough...maybe...not....

Mimenet are you joking!? Thats just your DS going through the phases to connect online thats all. Also, if you have a BT phoneline you can go online, wanadoo do a great package which plugs from your phoneline, very easy, free modem £15 a month. DO IT!!! :)
Also, yeah the bottom picture is a router and guy without a PC im afraid you cant go online from home!!
PS See Bleach and Lost magoc are confirmed to be online!?!

i think you can set up a wireless router/hotspot in your home without it using a PC, but you'd still have to pay a monthly broadband fee, which probably isnt worth it without a PC. If you really dont have a PC then you're probably best looking up local (free) wifi hotspots. Websites like www.wifi411.com should help.
I'm surprised Owen, because technology wise you tend to have the latest stuff very quickly (DS at US launch, PSP and Micro), so i thought it'd be natural you'd have broadband.

You would need a PC/laptop to set the router up though me thinks. I dont know im technically inept to be honest!! Just from experience!
Erm...its only been delayed for another 2 weeks, not long at all considering that we have waited a year so far. I'm still gonna wait for the European release and w00t, I can't wait. :D

You don't need the official one! Buy a random *cheap* one from ebay. Like this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-Wireless-802-11g-54Mbps-WiFi-Adapter-Dongle-New_W0QQitemZ5813971487QQcategoryZ45002QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem).

I don't think it's possible that the Nintendo one will work any better than a "cheaper" one.

The Nintendo one should just be industry standard 802.11G, like all those ones on eBay. If you really want to you can use it to network other computers in your house.
OK, still finding out info about AOL Broadband!
Would the AOL Broadband 'Silver' package work? It's 10 times faster then Dial-up and has a speed of up to 512kbps.
It's the £17.99 package, i don't think i would be able to afford anything more then that, purely because i wouldn't be going online with the games all the time, so i don't won't to spend to much money on it!
Any ideas if this would work? thanks in advance.

Play.com has the Nintendo DS USB Access Point going for £14.99 delivered on the same day as Mario Kart is being released, so i very much doubt that it will sell in shops for £30.
Also prior to this nintendo dongle being released, none of the wireless USB dongles have been compatible with the DS and only Wireless routers would work with it.

Well obviously not, there aren't any online games yet. The DS isn't using an Internet protocol to transfer data.

Yes, definately don't go with Wanadoo.
AOL are fine if you don't mind their horrible software choking your PC to death. On the plus side (unlike Wanadoo and various other ISPs), their internet services are uncapped.
512k will be fine for online play on the DS.

well; my fears have been cancelled out now, thanks to the Nintendo of USA PR relating to the wireless adapter;
'........From home, if the user already has a Wi-Fi network, the Nintendo DS unit will connect directly to it with minimal setup procedures. Those who have a high-speed Internet connection such as cable or DSL, but no wireless network, can use the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, sold separately, that will plug into a computer USB port to create a wireless access point to connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
Outside of the home, players will be able to connect in a variety of ways, including at thousands of free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection hotspots nationwide. More details about these hotspots and how to connect outside of the home will be announced shortly.
Nintendo DS is just the first Nintendo system to connect via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The same service will be incorporated into Nintendo's next-generation home console, code-named Nintendo Revolution, set for release in 2006.....'
The first paragraph makes me doubly happy. I feared that the DS would not work with existing wireless routers.
