I have only started watching a few months back so I have been watching the most popular (Bebop, Champloo, Akira etc). I used to watch Robotech as a kid and loved. Bought the boxed set and started getting into anime.
Anyone recommend a series with a good story and decent animation ?

Mai HiME is fantastic it'll be out here within the next few months... really cut and badly dubbed. I saw the first episode, its quite terrible. Mai HiME is basically by the director of Bebop. I can't recommend it enough, it starts off light and comedic and ends up SUPER dark with quite a few nice plot twists. Memorable characters and plot lines too.

Up to ep. 12 on Samurai Champloo, tis most excellent.Up to ep 109 on Naruto which is also great. Bleach looks good but I have only seen 5 or 6 eps. I have read the manga of FMA which is great too, want ot but vol. 3 but amazon is sold out.
Mai Hime is indeed fantastic, but the ending is absolute crap. FMA is brilliant, and the ending made me feel so... soft and dunno, it's hard to describe. It's easily one of my fav series. Gotta watch the movie, but haven't found it yet.

I'm currently watching Elfen Lied passingly.
For any real otaku here who fancy importing or torrenting, I'd suggest the following anime:
-Kare Kano (otherwise known as His and Her Circumstances - interestingly the main character's voice in the dubbed DVD version is done by the girl who played Ash in the Western version of Pokemon, but she's much better here, not least because she's not having to pretend to be a preteen lad...)
-Ranma 1/2 series... not as fun as the manga though.
-I, My, Me! Strawberry Eggs! (Fantastic anime featuring schoolgirls, crossdressers and a cute lil' doggie).
-Ai Yori Aoshi (Stunning)
-Mahoraba: Heartful Days (funny and cute... well worth a look)
Some of these might already be out here, released when I wasn't looking, but I'd still heartedly reccommend them. I can't be doing with all this fighting anime like Naruto though. I prefer more comedy/romance type anime.

I'm currently watching:
Yakitate Japan - It's about Bread..yet it's the best Anime 've seen n ages I love it
Maho Sensei Negima - Stalling n Ep 23, Anime Council are a littel slow at the moment with personal things in the way, but i'm waiting as everyone else is.
Futakoi Alternative - Brilliant OP, I like the story, a alternate to Futakoi that I jsut finished watching about a Town that is famed for the Twins that are born and raised there.
Shuffle - From the Hentai game of the same name (But no hentai in it only echhi stuff) But it's a good one, same with Futakoi a brilliant OP
Tsubusa Chronicles - The Clamp Anime, some say it's a load of Crap..I like it, has Charcters from all the Clamp animes, always nice to see one you know pop up as a side character.
Suzuka - About a Boy who fals in love with a High jumper girl, she rejects him yet he carries on to gain her love, joins the track team to get closer to her, not my fav of the lot but I enjoy it.
Da capo Second Season - Finished the 1st one a while back and loved it, Second one is getting better, think a third one has been announced as well.
Okusama wa Joshikousei (my Wife is a Highschool girl)- Just Fanservice every two minutes, about a 16 year old girl whos married to her teacher..no ide awhy o0 something to do with her dad wanting it or something, but it's alright.

Nah, they have, Story is Sakura's Soul has shattered into Feathers and Crossed over Diffrent dimensions, Syoran gets sent to the Time Queen ( think it's her name) And she sneds Syoran, Sakura, Fai and Kurogane have to travel to Diffrent dimensions to get the feathers and for Fai escape from a king whos after him and Kurogane to get seek oponents who can match his strength. But I think they have the same VA's, I never watched the japanese version of CCS but when I heard Chii's voice it was the same as on Chobbits
I'm currently watching Gundam SEED Destiny, but I'm unhappy with where the ending is going. It's like the director thought at the beginning of the series that Durandal has to be evil, but he didn't figure out how to make him look bad until about 40 episodes in, hence the rushed ending.
I command you all to experience Neon Genesis Evangelion. You will not regret it.

Any reasons? Something can't just be shite. I'm certain you have perfectly valid reasons for hating on it, like the decline in the animation quality, the complexity of the storyline and themes it supports... so why not share exactly what you disliked? Maybe I'm rose-tinting Evangelion... but you'll be hard-pressed to find a story with more scope, more detail and more mystery surrounding it. Especially in anime. Eva was a landmark for it's time and remains so today.
Man, anime fans sure do have a lot of angry opinions. How many of us cry ourselves to sleep when our favourite show is dubbed with EDITS? Jesus, suicide time.

I'm sorry, but if you wanna sit through 30 minutes of random violence (aka Gundam seed) then go ahead. But NGE was groundbreaking for its time. It has an amazing complex story, some incredible characters and a look so advanced for its day.

I wouldnt say that at all. before NGE, there was Sailor Moon, Lupin, Dragon Ball, macross,Endless Road SSX, Galaxy Express 999.
Im sorry but all these shaped anime much further (especially in Japan) than NGE however popular it is.

My fave series have to be Tenchi Muyo, Fullmetal Alchemist and .Hack//SIGN.
Gunslinger Girl and Genshiken are two of the best shows to be released this year on R1, and I reccomend everyone should buy them.

Because these shows are all the epitome of plot and character exploration. Evangelion started out very simple, monster of the week with nice animation and some hints toward something more. What we ended up with was a complex analysis of mankind, and several brilliant ideas. To call it the greatest anime of all time would be an understatement, in my humble opinion. It changed my expectations of anime altogether.
So many themes were going in the background it's easy to just take Eva at face value, but you can really develop a greater understanding of just how complex and intriguing it is if it catches you. Guess it didn't catch you. No matter, there are plenty who dislike it. They usually pin it down to the lack of animation in later episodes, the storyline seeming to mindfuck them, and the brutality of the final two episodes. Regardless of how you view Evangelion, there really is nothing else out there quite like it. RahXephon comes close, and I think VERY highly of it, but Evangelion is still my favourite of the two simply for the impact it elicted in me first time watching.
The only time I really felt any kind of emotional attachment to Rah was later in the series, when a certain character was killed unknowing to Kamina Ayato. Evangelion was just... wow. The things that it all led to, the final result. The final scenes in that movie are an unsurpassed art. Opinon.
I'm cool with DragonBall, but the rest of those shows aren't groundbreaking. As enjoyable as they all are to their respective fans, I like to look for a little something more in the animation I watch. As I said before, I'm probably rose-tinting Evangelion to hell but I simply adore the characters, the concept and above all the drama filling all of the last episodes. As long as anime gives everyone something it doesn't matter.
Maybe it's just cool now to hate Evangelion.

I take everyting you said in, but to say macross wasnt groundbreaking when it was released in like the 70's or something.
"Yeah take your NGE tinted shades off"
I think imo NGE is a little similar to Naruto in its fanbase as it is something that alot new people to anime watch. Just my view on things. Probably wrong on that point but still.

*Keeps them on* I think Evangelion redefined the robot anime genre, regardless of what Macross did. I've only seen Macross Plus and to be honest it was kind of shitty, didn't do anything to retain my interest due to some horribly boring character love triangle nonsense. You can have the Macross thing, since it is rather popular for some weird reason... but my point remains on the others. You can 't just list a load of classic anime shows and say they were groundbreaking.
Any anime fanbase is akin to another, because people will defend their beloved series to the death. Naruto is essentially a revamped DragonBall... which is the reason I like it so much, and maybe Evangelion was a revamped Macross or Gundam, I don't know. I don't care about those shows.
*Polishes the NGE shades* It's worthless to argue about this further, isn't it. We aren't going to get anywhere.

I dont see it as pointless. Quite enjoying it tbh. Nothing personal, just a good discussion.
I wasnt listing them for any reason other than to show that Evangelion was NOTHING NEW. However good it was, it wasnt groundbreaking, it wasnt anything largely innovative. You even admitted it was a revamped Macross showing that it had been done before, and it will be done again.

I said maybe it was as I haven't really seen a lot of it to judge. The actual robots weren't even robots in the end... the entire robot anime genre (if Eva even really falls into one single category) was redefined. An anime was created that all other anime could aspire toward. Evangelion really -was- something new when it was released. You're saying it wasn't, and it wasn't particularly innovative... have you watched the entire series/movies? The very concept itself was quite innovative, it's simply full of hidden depth and other nonsense nerds like me can really look into when they're bored. The final movie as I mentioned above is simply amazing. I mean, check this out if you don't believe me:
Evangelion Commentary Project (http://www.evacommentary.org/op/op_1.html)
Some of this is speculative, but as that shows... a tremendous about of stuff is going on there. I don't feel I can argue about this much longer, I have some work to be getting on with and my opinions are quite biased, as well as ill-informed. I don't feel it would be wise to continue this much longer, if only because it would disrupt the harmony this forum has at the moment.
So hey, I'll be the mature guy here. You win and I lose. Eva wasn't groundbreaking, nor was it actually as good as people like me say it is. Rose tint-me-doo.

I hope you can find a decent download for them.

It does get a lot better when Ichigo gets to the Soul Society but I still found the first episode's great!
I liked the school setting; it's nice and light-heated at the start - and Ichigo shit-kicking his dad is pretty funny. :D

Hentai is cool, it's not for patethic people or sad persons, it's just porn in anime form, so if you're okay with porn hentai shouldn't be that bad.

Dunno if this counts as anime, but I'll post it anyway seeing as it's a bit related.
Just finished watching Final Fantasy Advent Chlidren. It's really spectacular, story is a bit weak but the fighting is awesome. I've never played FF7 ( but know some like Cloud, Tifa and Sephiroth... the usual ) and could follow the story fine though :)

Btw; a quick show of hands; how many of you only watch fansubs/bootlegged dvds?
I get the impression that this is the trend for most in this thread. I shy away from fansubs/copies for the most part, which is why I haven't seen the likes of Trinity Blood(can't wait for the R1 release) Speed Grapher, the end of FMA....
Btw; a quick show of hands; how many of you only watch fansubs/bootlegged dvds?
I watch both. I prefer fansubs to keep up to date on new series or stuff that isn't likely to be licenced (Unless I've missed something, BECK's never going to be dubbed), but I also appreciate a good dub job. I just bought the Gundam 0080 boxset today.

I like to get fansubs to keep up to date and see what new anime series are like, and if i really like the series i'll note it down for me to buy it on dvd when i start earning money.
I've only bought 2 bootlegged volumes for One Piece because it was a big series that was already licensed and wanted to see what it was like.

I don't really watch anime's, I have some on VHS I bought but apart from that I couldn't really be bothere with the whole thing.
I prefer reading manga's though, because not every good manga get's an animated series.
Some good ones I started collecting:
- Lyn3
I haven't gotten far enough to tell something about the story but it seems very promising and the artwork is stunning.
- Exaxxion (or gun/cannon god exaxxion I believe)
An alien race has made contact with us humans, and under the pretence of living together in harmony and sharing technology they live among us. On the tenth aniversary of their arrival they claim the earth as theirs and thus rule our planet. One man, a scientist who discovered alien technology that was burried somewhere on earth is standing up to them with technology at least as advanced as theirs.
I really love this one, the artwork is amazing, as is the story (allthough it's a bit cliché). It's from the same guy that did gunsmith cats.
I could go on, but these are the ones I enjoy the most for now.
Im watching Bleach and naruto at the moment.
Looking for other animes to get into.
Bleach is my fav so far. And yea it started off average but then got really good all of a sudden and just gets better and better.

Ah quite a few animes animes i've watched have been mentioned but as we speak the ones i'm actively watching are; Rurouni Kenshin, Naruto, Gundam Seed Destiny and Gundam X.
I've nearly ended Kenshin now, been watching it for a while since a friend fell in love with the series, and i must admit i've quite liked the often light hearted show, the fights kick ass and the historical setting seems so thoroughly researched you can't help but admire it. Naruto is same as most people really loving the show, and the game even more.
Most the animes i have watched have been mentioned already, Mai Hime, Cowboy Bebop, not sure if Escaflowne was mentioned though loved that show too. After i finish Gundam X (something i started watching ages ago but never finished) i plan on freeing up space and getting either Bleach or FMA.

Mai-Otome(or mai-Zhime), as it'll be called, is due for release on Japanese screens on 6th October. Sunrise are pretty good at sticking to release dates, so I would take this as more or likely the definitive date.
The DVDs will probably start showing up in Japan aroun January 2006(but I doubt anyone actually cares).
Only one response to my 'is bootlegging your main form of anime exposure' question....

Indeed, i have no idea why its being called Mai-Otome. Mai probably isn't going to appear in it at all. The new main character is called Akira, just like that girl from the last season. Mikoto is now a cat (for some strange reason) and Tate is now a girl if i remember rightly. In terms of the manga, it seems alot more ecchi but i doubt that will make it over the the anime since the story is totally different in terms of Mai-HiME's manga and anime.
But we shall see.

I said usually. The general rule is that most will be pretty bad compared to the original, simply because the original was rose-tinted to fuck and of course because they changed aspects fans would have preferred left alone.
Hell, I pretty much know an Evangelion sequel would most likely suck, but I'd still lap every drop up if GAiNAX saw fit to milk the cash cow a little more. I want few things more than some form of new Evangelion. Make it so, GAiNAX, make it so.

Whilst we're on the subject, which anime do we all think has the best background music? Tsubasa Chronicle has some amazing background themes, and Evangelion is of course full of memorable, upbeat and downright chilling instrumental and vocal tracks. I'll always hold a soft spot for DragonBall Z's catchy battle themes and jingles, and who could forget the excellent Tenchi Muyo Ryoko theme? NOBOOOODDDDDY!!
I think the Pokémon series has some great music, partly because they lifted the majority of it straight from the GameBoy games and gave it a bit of an overhaul. Naruto? Check. Some amazing pieces of music in Naruto. CardCaptor Sakura had great intro songs as well as some very nice "captured card" music in the earlier part of the series... wow, I can find something I like in most anime, but music plays a big part.
So which anime can you recommend me some music from?

i think most of them now will be fillers, like trying to expand on other characters and show what happened inbetween that 2 and half yr timeskip in the manga, because before then the anime followed the manga exactly until that timeskip occured then its become totally different. If the anime is bridgin that timeskip im glad.

Ah! My Goddess, Vol. 1: Always and Forever w/Box
Elfen Lied: Vector 3
Full Metal Panic? FUMOFFU: Full Metal Fracas! - Volume 2
Fullmetal Alchemist: Equivalent Exchange - Volume 3
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Fall Of Ishbal - Volume 4
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Cost Of Living - Volume 5
Genshiken: Model Citizens - Volume 2
Girls Bravo: Volume 2
Grenadier: Holy Handgrenades - Vol. 2
Gunslinger Girl: The Silence Of The Stars - Volume 3
Megaman: NT Warrior - Log On! (V.2)
Man; the A!MG box is so sweet. I'll post some pics of it tomorrow, but I can honestly say, it is the best box I have ever had the pleasure of unwrapping. It is made up of three parts, a see through slip cover, and an artbox that splits into two(lift half off to uncover the storgae space plus the mobile phone strap). Nope, sorry I really didn't like it.
Flat, boring characters you don't care about, zero character developement and a very boring, cliched story that has been done a thousand times before. That basickly sums up Steamboy, oh I forgot: it really drags too.

Not much to explain really, no story/plot just some high school girls and the everyday things they get up to. Sort of like a Japanese Seinfield, not as funny though but still great.
The pervy male teacher and the cat Kamineko always make me laugh.

Azumanga Daioh's alright. The paedophile teacher, Kimura, is easily the best character.

How bullshit is the latest naruto anime arc? I thought it was abit daft when they went hunting for the scarab beetle, but this one is just so repetitive and silly. I cant believe theyve even considered bringing back Zabuza. What a lame idea. It was a good fight at first with Haku but after Sasuke - Naruto, it has to be something good to keep interest.

Full metal Alchemist. (Best. Ever.)
FLCL (Overrated imo.)
Dokuru! The beating to death angel! (2 episodes to go, should be released soon)
.hack //Dusk (this was ok, i liked the whole virtual world thing)
Neon Genesis Evangeilon (I liked, for some reason. I have a hate of everything old. Music, anime, games. Whatever.
Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu (funny)
Elfen Lied ( This was great. Dark and bloody, the storyline was pretty powerful as well.)
Air (this made me cry.) :embarrased:
Hellsing. (very cool, i felt let down by lazy animation sometimes, still looking forward to the new series.)
Am Currently watching
Bleach. Awesome.
Pani Poni Dash! (comedy. funny show that's all over the place.)
Eureka SeveN (this is fantastic, by the makers of FMA as well. too bad the subbers can't be any slower)
Ichigo Mashimaro (yes, it can't get any cuter)
Suzuka (yes, i know, its a romance but i like it.)
I'm going to get Azumanga Diaoh, I've wanted to for a while. Based on what I like, what else should I see?
EDIT: Movies.
I've seen a GITS.

Ok... after watching that first episode of the new series, it makes very little sense to me. Is it supposed to have any connection with the original series?
Jordan
09-10-2005, 05:24 PM
To be honest, bar the characters: (white haired princess girl), Natsuki (blue haired girl, headmaster), Shizuru (one who beat the shit out of the slave monster) and Tate (new name, father of the younger blue hair girl).
Its all new.
Supergrunch
09-10-2005, 05:42 PM
Ok, because I was trying to work out some kind of connection and wondering why Shizuru and Natsuki were it otome etc.
Another character that they had from the last one was akane, and that weird teacher/gardner guy from the last one had some job at the castle.
This series doen't seem as good as the last one, although its hard to judge form the first episode; the first episode of the original series wasn't that good either.
Also, all the otome seemed to refer to each other as "onee-sama". I wonder if they're actually supposed to be sisters, or if it's just some kind of title (the -sama suggests this).
Anyone like the new bleach intro? I think its scary.

Hmmm just a little random post here........ Ermmmm to all those who think that English dubs aren't all that bad or even *gulp* preferes them, please go and watch the first Brolli movie (DBZ incase you didn't know) that was shown today on Toonami...... I didn't know it could get this bad to be honest......... "The legendary super space warrior" I mean wtf? :-/ They completely disregarded the story in this thing.... It really was horrid. ;_; As if that wasn't bad enough, they probably picked the worst voice actors I've ever seen........ This really is the best example of why anime should be left as it is. ;_;

I don't get the DBZ movies. They have the weirdest voices. And the story is lame and full of plot holes. I only saw the middle really and got bored by the time it was dinner. They need to bring back Tenchi, Gundam and Big O. Those where the only good ones. Well There was outlaw star.
Also Martian Successor Nadesico should show on toonami as it isn't that bad. Or evangelion.
darkcloud
15-10-2005, 12:55 AM
Ahhh, Nadesico and Evangelion........... Reminds me of the days of anime on the sci-fi channel...... Best it's ever been in the UK for anime. ;_;
Yah, I had to force myself to watch the movie today as I love the one scene where Vegeta gets his head slammed into the boulder. hehe Anyway, that wasn't really worth the torture I put myself through........
Tenchi was also amazing, although, I missed a couple of episodes once and I was SO confused due to the whole other dimension type thing they do........ *shrug* Never really did work out what was going on.... Maybe one day I'll download it. XD Gundam Wing was always nice to have available to watch a lot better the One Piece anyway, and I've never even seen Big O. =P
But yeah, my point is, dubs should die, if only to get rid of these shitty DBZ movie dubs....... If that was the first anime I ever watched it would have been my last.... Seriously, so glad I saw the Japanese version as well........ And that it was no where near my first anime that goes to like transformers or something hehe. =P

Fullmetal Alchemist and Cowboy bebop are by far the best I've seen by far. FMA suprised me and amazed me as I started downloading some eps after seeing it in a anime mag, it's rich story and brilliant character development made it addictive as heck for me :p Not a single episode episode was wasted and it mixed so many different styles without overcomplicating things.
Cowboy Bebop was my fave at first but then I watched FMA Ein is probably my fave character :D it's so cute.
Those two are my favourites but I also like Gits:SAC, Samurai Champloo (I watched Episode 23 in the middle of the night and I laughed out loud like I've never done before), Love Hina, Gundam SEED and Mahoromatic.
Champloo gets a special mention as the action scenes in this was class! I loved the hip hop style and Shinichiro Watanabe's works are simply brilliant.
I found DBZ too long and way too tedious.

uh... Ok so i just searched the forum for posts on Final Fantasy: Advent Children and after this thread came up, read it and found that little had been said about it..
BUT i'll add to it anyway.
Someone mentioned a lack of story line.. The way I see it (after watching the film several unsober times) is that it's not so much a lack of story, more a lack of convention. Each time i've watched it i've understood something better. There's such beauty in teh presentation, in the interaction of colour elements - something I never noticed in teh game. The subtitles weren't the best in teh world which couldn't have helped understanding, but the film is pretty cool. The first time I watched it I didn't think much but now.. now I just love it.
Mainly I;m just wondering if many people have seen it? I love how the limit breaks and levelling-up are apparant, how clearly the character's moves are getting better each time.. awesome. I wish I could play the game now, as I never really got into it the first time around.

Hey I liked it to. I expected the same old super-boring fights and terrible animations, but this was the best filler yet.

Black Cat is defianlty worth the download, up to episode nine now if i'am not mistaken, and the torrents for the episodes can still be found on the fan-subbers websites ;)

uh... Ok so i just searched the forum for posts on Final Fantasy: Advent Children and after this thread came up, read it and found that little had been said about it..
BUT i'll add to it anyway.

I've seen it, I... got hold of it recently. I love it, especially as a big fan of the game. I would've preferred it though if they had used more materia. I've not followed fan reactions, so thats probably the one thing that so many people have said that its attributed to being a noob thing to say - but thats simply something I feel would've made it better. I didn't really find the story confusing, but maybe that's because I played the playstation game through enough times to finally understand it.
I recently rewatched Trigun. Who else loves Trigun, I mean, c'mon, I wanna see some raised hands. One of my favourite parts about it is the wholesome ending, this is no Lain, no Evangelion - the ending makes sense and doesn't leave you hanging. I didn't want a show like Trigun to end with optional speculation and dripping questions - I wanted to know what happened and see it fulfilled in action packed sequences, and thats what I got :)

I've been watching Onegai Sensei lately. It's beautiful, I'm about halfway there. The last series I finished in full was School Rumble. VERY funny series, and really great characters. Tenma is adorable :D
