Well the anime is based on the Suzumiya Haruhi's novels.
The novels came out in random order as well but not the same random order as the anime.

The Novels Order.

She acts very similarly. Doesnt talk, emotionless etc etc

But is she a clone of the main protagonist's mother, containing the soul of Lilith within her vessel-like being? Will she absorb Adam and rise above Earth to meld all of man in Complementation? Do people find her sexy when she is wrapped in bandages and very clearly injured and in pain?

If the answers to those are all yes, I think we'd better give Ted a call.

I've heard good things about bleach AND bad things too. I think they are in a filler season, just like naruto, and that sucks.

Bleach fillers are no where near as bad though, in fact i think by the looks of it Bleach is coming close to seeing the fillers end. I read somewhere that the bleach filler arc would only be 22 episodes (and there was like a point where bleach went trigger happy with hour specials - heck there was just one yesterday), so with any luck what i read was true and give or take 3 episodes we'll back to aizen. Naruto though....now that's just disheartening - these guys are singly handedly making everyone just look retarded and stupid again - making shino laugh....i don't care if it was a jutsu or whatever the hell it was - there was no need for it at all.

Kinda naruto 189 spoilarlar:

The latest Naruto filler arc was showing a tiny bit of promise, did they really have to ruin it with sharks and Hinata forgetting that she has Byakugan? I miss when they at least tried to make some of the techniques look like they had something to do with ninjas. Floating water sharks. FFS.

Anyone been following the second series of Ah! My Goddess? I think it's subtitled "Everyone has Wings" or something. Basically the storylines and animation/art have been greatly improved over the arguably shitty and boring first season, and I'm hoping it continues it's ascent to the end.

Then again, I'm a dork for the characters so that might explain my like.

Spot on, but it's taking far too long for it to return to normality, there's almost as many fillers as real episodes.

As for Bleach, I don't like it, the fights are like Dragon Ball Z but without the excitement, I hate when characters are badass for no reason.

So Wolfs Rain just ended

ok, thats over now.

The final battle with Darshia was good, though could have been better, how they killed him i'm not too sure, would have been so much better had Kiba ripped his throat out, i was so looking forward to that.

Also the ending left me a bit confused, anyone know what the hell happened?

Was there no paradise afterall?

From the way it ended it seems like time had rewinded and it was gonna start all over again, like a never ending cycle.

Normally i don't mind open ended endings, but i just feel those characters deserved the paradise they searched so hard for. And having them "reincarnated" in a new world with seemingly no memory of past events, and seems like they just might start it all off again in a never ending cycle, just isn't a good enough ending for what was IMO a great show.

It really does need one last final episode (or even film) to do it justice...how long after the end of Evagelion did it take for the "ending" to be redone?:hmm:

The art is only concept art and does not reflect the "final product", i think.

In conjunction with Gainax and Weta (the effects company responsible for the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong), ADV is moving ahead with plans to sign one of three A-list directors, and believe they are close to a deal.

Wow, at least the special effects department is in really good hands.

You can watch it right now, doesn't make much of a diference when you see it, as long as it's before ep 133 and the 2nd movie should be seen after 133.

The movies are nice, nothing much, but the animation is way better and they are stand-alone stories.

The3rdChildren

I've had a few talks with Arragorn about the live-action Evangelion movie, and we went briefly over how we think it should play it. It would work best as a trilogy of "action" movies. Here are some of the thoughts that popped up about them.

Movie 1:

No Asuka in this movie. Just a mention of "The Second Children" somewhere.

Should start with Shinji on a train-car bound for Tokyo-3 with a little opening monologue about Second Impact, the year and his past. His monologue could be interruped by the sirens wailing out and an explosion derailing the train during Sachiel's attack.

The movie should primarily focus on Shinji's fascination and relationship with Rei Ayanami. Angels in the movie should be Sachiel, Chamshell and Ramiel. The movie's climax would be Operation Yashima (or whatever it was called) where Units-01 and 00 mounted a joint-sniper attack on the diamond-shaped Ramiel as it bore it's way into the Geofront.

The movie could climax with Gendo Ikari in conference with the five-coloured men of the "Instrumentality Committee" who are discussing the Angels. They would discuss a thing called "Instrumentality project" before the committee members fade out except Keel Lorenz and Gendo Ikari. The last lines of shadowy dialogue could be similar to the dialogue in the second episode like:

Lorenz: Ikari, you know that there can be no turning back now...

Ikari: I know. Mankind has no time left.

The two would then fade out to darkness and the movie would cut to one finale scene of cliffhanger impact. I was thinking maybe Shinji laying motionless and wide-awake in his bed, or perhaps a shot of Eva-01 knelt on the mountainside with the moon shining down on it grasping Eva-00's entry plug in it's burned hand.

Movie 2:

Action opening of Eva-02 defeating Gaghiel on the ships at sea. This would be revealed as a video feed that Shinji, Rei and several members of NERV personnel are watching. The Second Child would not be present, but Shinji would encounter her a little later in the movie, possibly at an arcade like in the manga whilst he's with Kensuke and Toji.

Less Angels once again. With a POSSIBLE skip of Israfel because dancing would be seen as rather gay. However a lot of Asuka/Shinji development would probably come from this movie. Keep the action Angels in, primarily the Angel Sahaquiel who falls from space and the three Eva's need to run from three spots and "catch it".

This movie should begin to build specific relationships of Shinji's, especially his friend Toji whose "story arc" would come into play primarily in this movie and see him die at the hands of a berserking Eva-01 like in the manga. The final shot of the movie would be Shinji's piercing scream as he realises his Eva killed his friend.

The movie should also have some Misato/Kaji stuff.

Movie 3:

This is where it all falls apart, because there is literally SO much happening in these episodes that things would almost certainly need to be skipped, but everything is so relevant that skipping it would tone down the entire trilogy and probably spoil it.

The End of Evangelion is another thing I do not feel should be comitted to cinema and therefore they should try to "finish" the trilogy where Kaworu dies. I firmly believe the Evangelion movie/movies would work best without a lot of the philosophy elements in the series and it should be a character/action movie primarily. Who knows?

I just watched all of Paranoia Agent the other day. What can I say? It's a 13 episode long series about a supernatrual murderer that goes by the name of Lil' Slugger. It started off interesting and felt like a normal detective style show, but as soon as it got to episode five plus it became extremely weird. It took a twist and became abnormal and then I began to understand why it was called Paranoia Agent. The fave moment in the show for me was the RPG episode, it was just very funny and unexpected from the show.

Find more info about the series here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paranoia_agent

I was waiting for your post 3rd children. Your "script" would be great but it doesn't seem to be a trilogy and i don't know how the hell are they going to make a movie out of a story 26 episodes long. Will they compact everything? Will they get away from the fantastic original plot and make a spin-off, alternate world thing, like in Girlfriend of Steel? Will they just focus on the story of End of Evangelion?
I don't know, but i have a bad feeling about this.

I firmly believe the Evangelion movie/movies would work best without a lot of the philosophy elements in the series and it should be a character/action movie primarily. Who knows?

Truth. If they want to sell they have to keep philosophy out of the equation.
Don't get me wrong, i loved the depth and uniqueness that it blessed the anime with, but most of the mainstream action movie watcher is too close minded for such depth and would not like such thing. We don't have to search too far, The End of Evangelion disappointed a huge ammount of fans and non-fans alike, partly because of all that philosophy aspect in the end of the movie.

Should start with Shinji on a train-car bound for Tokyo-3 with a little opening monologue about Second Impact, the year and his past.

Hmm, i think they should show a little bit more of the pos-apocaliptic world right after the Second Impact and during all that World War 3 (such as the nuclear bombing of Tokyo 1), before the reforming of the UN. Even if it's just a 20 second video, it would give much bigger impact to the viewer and he would understand better why the **** half of the world's population is gone. Oh, and a sneak peek of the discovery of Adam in Antarctica.

On another note, all that Kaji "Spy on secret military base" stuff and the political overplotting would be nice additionss, such as reference the to the dumy corporations behind the Marduk Institute.

Although it must have character development, as most movies have, i think it will be more action oriented than the anime and Weta seems to be the right team for the job.

I would like if this movie never existed, but if it comes to life one day i'll be 1st in line. I'm really curious about this.

Even if it's just a 20 second video, it would give much bigger impact to the viewer and he would understand better why the **** half of the world's population is gone. Oh, and a sneak peek of the discovery of Adam in Antarctica.

I figured those would all be things touched upon later. A very brief prologue at the start of the film showing Second Impact in Antarctica would be cool. I really like the idea of narration coming in midway.

Sort of like, the movie comes in from white in a windy, snowy antarctic wasteland dig site. There's barely any signs of life, aside the howling winds. Suddenly the ground starts to shake and several people come running out of the main "tent" area in a panic. There are voices saying things like "Get away!" and static-ridden communications like "Put it back! PUT IT BACK IN" in reference to the Longinus Spear. These would need to be really hazed and messy, almost indecipherable.

Suddenly there'd be a huge bright flash and we'd see the Earth from space, with the Antarcic being engulfed in a giant explosion. The explosion would be entirely silent. Perhaps then we could have Shinji cut in with narration like:

It's 2:40am, and my grasp of character dialogue is WANK. As Shinji spoke, we'd get little flashes in the train window perhaps of scenes of chaos, flooding, death etc.

"In the year 2000, what they said was a meteorite struck the Earth in Antarctica. Most of the world was flooded on this day and the rest was thrown into complete chaos. The impact was so great that Earth's were axis shifted, eliminating all seasons but summer. On this day.. half of the world's population was lost forever.

"It took us years to recover from the Second Impact, as the catastrophe was known. It created a third world war, culminating in a nuclear detonation over old Tokyo. We've seen since two new Tokyo cities being built, Tokyo-2 and..."

An announcer could come on now, saying "We are approximately seven minutes out of our final destination, New Tokyo-3. We thank you for travelling Nagoya Shuttle Rail" or something.

Back to Shinji.

"I was born shortly after the Second Impact, so you might say I'm kinda lucky... but... I don't think so. When I was just a baby, my mother passed away and my father... My father left me with my uncle. It seems he was more interested in his work than being my dad.

"So... why did I come here when he asked me to?"

Shinji would look down at a real photo of Misato, having a thought about how "at least the girl picking me up is kinda cute", picture complete with the boobs being pointed out. He'd go to tuck it back into his pocket but get interrupted by the wailing klaxon in the distance, followed by a huge explosion that literally throws him to the ground, derailing the train and causing the lights to go out.

Wow, that was a wank opening. Good thing I'm not a writer.

Just watched episode 12 of Susumiya Haruhi....... So cool..... I wanted them to do a live performance of the outro at the end but it didn't happen. ; ;

I really don't want this series to end. So enjoyable to watch... Even episodes where pretty much nothing happens. lol

3rdChildren, i think you should start making a movie. There are some good points there, very cinematic ones. I want to correct a mistake i wrote back there: Tokyo 1 was not nuclear bombed, it was non-nuclear bombed (N2 bombed).

the first song she sings, woah she sounds a hell of a lot older. but they must of rotoscoped the guitar playing parts, the animation was awesome.

I've seen this kind of thing happen before: when a character sings in an anime, sometimes it's not the original voice actress that does the singing, it's another one they hire. Maybe that explains why she sounds older.

I want to correct a mistake i wrote back there: Tokyo 1 was not nuclear bombed, it was non-nuclear bombed (N2 bombed).

Yeah, you're right. I love the N^2 Bombs, they're really awesome. They also feature in one of my favourite scenes of the series.

Zeruel has infiltrated the Geofront and has disabled Evangelion-02. Evangelion-01 won't start using the Dummy Plug, the only method necessary because the Eva is rejecting Rei and Shinji has chosen to stop piloting.

As the 3rd Children stands beside Kaji gazing upon the ruined Eva-02, Unit-00 rises up from beneath the ground, unarmed aside a small device gasped firmly in it's right hand. An N^2 Bomb. Suddenly it surges forwards to the horror of the bridge crew who can only scream "She's going to self destruct?" and "REI!".

The Eva collides with Zeruel, sending an AT Field literally tearing across the Geofront lake with a giant impact. It forces the bomb through the barrier at Zeruel's core, but it shields itself at the last moment and is undamaged, unlike Eva-00.

Both arms now gone, Eva-00 is struck in the face with Zeruel's ribbon-like offensive limbs and falls silent as the 3rd Children looks on in horror.

God, that scene wins.

That's by far the best episode IMO. I didn't know she losts her other arm in the explosion, there's too much smoke to get a clear picture. Now that i think about it, Zereul is an expert in removing arms!! He removed Eva-02's both arms (and decapitation too), he indirectly removed one of Eva-00's arms and he removed one of the Eva-01's arms. Talk about dismemberment expertise.

I mostly take my "ideal" version of Evangelion from the anime and the manga, but a lot comes from the manga. If you haven't picked it up yet, definately do so. There's a hell of a lot of stuff added on and a lot of pointless stuff taken out. For example, Kaji's backstory is expanded upon greatly, Shinji is a little more interesting and quite sarcastic, Kaworu shows up prior to Asuka's encounter with Arael and therefore becomes far more prominent in the manga than the anime. Shinji also dislikes Kaworu greatly. Lastly, Toji actually dies in the manga as opposed to losing his left leg in the anime.

If they were to make a movie, they should really look to the manga for events and character traits. Also if they were to remake the series, something following the manga would be ideal in my eyes. It's different enough to the anime to stand as a separate entity.

That's by far the best episode IMO. I didn't know she losts her other arm in the explosion, there's too much smoke to get a clear picture. Now that i think about it, Zereul is an expert in removing arms!! Yeah, the arm holding the N^2 bomb is blown clean off. It's shown better in the manga, so it's debatable whether or not it actually happened in the anime or not.

Who could play rei, and what would be suitable for her hair colour?

I don't think she should have overly blue hair. Her eyes should still be read to match her with Kaworu. I think a timid-looking asian girl could play her quite well, with very white/very light blue coloured hair. Rei should probably be one of the only asian cast members in the production. I have no idea who they'd pick to do this, probably someone

Asahina Mikuru's Adventure Episode 00
Yuki does the announcement for Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu I on next episode preview

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi I
Kyon asks Yuki what she is reading. She shows her book to him - it is Hyperion by Dan Simmons.
Haruhi holds up issues of Comptiq (with Shuffle! on the cover) and Comp Ace (with cover illustration by Navel, the original makers of Shuffle!) to illustrate the necessity of moé in the SOS Brigade.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi III
In this episode, Kyon is seen reading volume 2, I-My-Me of Let's Leave the School (学校を出よう Gakkō wo Deyō), another light novel series by Nagaru Tanigawa.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi IV
During the battle, Ryōko asks Yuki, "You love Kyon-kun, don't you? I know you have realized it," in sped up and reversed "incantation" Japanese.
During the preview, Haruhi and Kyon shout "Suzumiya Haruhi, Ready GO!" This is reference to the anime Mobile Fighter G Gundam.
The opening theme isn't aired in this episode. The full credits are instead shown in the preface before the cut theme song.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi V
The taxi driver shown in the cab is Arakawa from Remote Island Syndrome.

The Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi
The background music that plays when Kyon takes over as pitcher is a rearrangement of the opening theme to the Touch TV series, a famous baseball anime/manga created by Mitsuru Adachi.

At 17:45 Yuki can be seen with glasses, and Kyon can be seen on his knees in a mysterious room with a unknown girl in the front. This is probably a reference to episode 10 (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya IV), where Yuki fights Ryōko.

Mystérique Sign
In this episode, the computer club president's room has posters of Aya Hirano, Minori Chihara, and Yuko Goto - the voice actors of the female leads.

A copy of Densho Otoko (parody of Densha Otoko) is also found on his bookshelf.

Itsuki's attacks, "Fumoffu" and "Second Raid", are the titles of Full Metal Panic! side-story and sequel - Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu and Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid - they are also animated by Kyoto Animation. Also, when the giant bug attacks Yuki, she protects herself with a defensive barrier identical to the one generated by the "Lambda Driver" from Full Metal Panic!.

When the Cave Cricket is healed during the battle, it follows Mushiking HP-recovery sequence.

At the end of this episode, the preview for Episode 8 mimicks the episode titles from the anime Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. See comparison at right.
When Haruhi Suzumiya asks the computer club president's girlfriend where his family are, she asks, "Would they happen to be in Canada?," which would be a reference to the "mysterious disappearence" of Ryōko Asakura to Canada in episode 10. No one seems to react to the question.

Remote Island Syndrome
In this episode (as well as in the flashback in Remote Island Syndrome (Part II)) Yuki is reading the japanese translation of the detective story The woman in the wardrobe by Peter Antony (pen name of the brothers Peter and Anthony Shaffer), published 1951 by Evans. The Japanese translation was published 1996 by Tōkyō Sōgensha.

In the sequence where Haruhi is explaining the truth behind the events at the villa, her, Itsuki's and Mikuru's poses are imitations of those used by Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth and Mia Fey respectively in the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS (the series is known in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban). The original air date of this episode, May 22, also coincides with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's birthday.

The "unknown" perpetrator of the crime was shown on screen as a black figure so that his identity is hidden. This follows the style of Detective Conan.

Furthermore, when Haruhi strikes her final pose at the end of her Phoenix-Wright-style deduction, the last few notes of the music are reminiscent of the Detective Conan main theme (However, some fans argue it's a take on the "Cornered" music of the Phoenix Wright games).

Live Alive
The title of this episode may be a tribute to the Squaresoft game Live A Live.

A guy from the Computer Society is in the audience when showing "Mikuru Asahina's Adventure, Episode 00".

Two Japanese TV personalities show up at 2:29, One is Hard Gay the other is Akihiro Miwa.

The Third Reich Coffee House (純喫茶 第三帝国, Junkissa Daisanteikoku?) nameboard seen in corridor is a reference to Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer.

The play Koizumi is acting in is Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.

The conductor of wind orchestra is a look-alike for Joe Hisaishi.
The band that plays before ENOZ is a cover band of DMC from "First-ever Deathmetal Comedy Manga" Detroit Metal City by Kiminori Wakasugi. (Manga review; in Japanese)

The band name ENOZ is a possible reference to the once popular all-female band ZONE, which is ENOZ in reverse. Interestingly, ZONE also consisted of two guitarists, one bass & one drummer. Also, it mirrors the fact that ZONE disbanded after a majority of their members were about to graduate from High School.

The original band members have names that are similar to their real life counterparts; Takako, Mai, Miyuki and Mizuki for the ENOZ, Takayo, Maiko, Miyu and Mizuho for ZONE, and are also playing their counterpart's instrument; Mai(Maiko) - bass, Mizuki(Mizuho) - drums, Miyuki(Miyu) - lead vocal. In all, this would be more of an homage to ZONE.
Kyon's last line in the episode "Aren't you just combining bands and idols?!" is another reference to the band ZONE who are in the genre bandol (band + idol).
Instruments used by ENOZ
Haruhi: Italia Mondial Classic 2Tone Sunburst
Yuki: Gibson SG Special Classic White (Limited Color)
Mai: Lakland Bob Glaub Signature Teal Green
Mizuki: Pearl Drum Set
Haruhi's Mondial Classic is the guitar which became famous after being featured in J–rock movie リンダリンダリンダ (Linda Linda Linda).
In the background of the happenings of the episode are hints of the events which led up to Haruhi's performance. At 03:30 you can see the tussle between the band members and Student Council plus a blurry bunny girl. At 04:25 the healthy members of the band run past with guitar cases. At 07:02 a bunnygirl and witch run past with guitar cases.

The Day of Sagittarius
The script of this episode was done by the novelist Shouji Gatou, author of the Full Metal Panic! series.
Yuki's alternative program code for the computer game is written in C. And compiled with the Borland C compiler for 32-bit systems. She ends the last file with ^C (ESC-code for abort) instead of ^Z (ESC-code for end of file), which implies that she changed her mind on alternating the current section of code in the game. The source code shown in this scene can be seen here. This program can actually intervene in running processes if it's completed.
During the episode, Haruhi calls out, "Send out the Gundam!" with the word "Gundam" censored out. The video showing the Gundam (from Mobile Suit Gundam, though the depicted scene appears to be redrawn) has also been blurred.
In the introduction to the episode 12, a reference is made to the anime series Macross 7. Haruhi says "Listen to my song!", followed by Kyon replying "Bomber!", a direct reference to the character Nekki Basara.
The music in the computer game and the PCM emulator sounds playing in the room from 12:52 to 16:25 is Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 Allegretto. The music from 17:22 until the climax at 20:05 is Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4, Movement No. 4 Allegro con fuoco.
The character on the Day of Sagittarius III game cover is captain Okita of the Yamato from Space Battleship Yamato, or Starblazers. The computer club president's alter-ego's blue skin is also a reference to the main enemy of Yamato, Lord Desler.
Day of Sagittarius may be a reference to the 4x space game Master of Orion.
Other notable items and references in episode 11.

Someday in the Rain
The background voices during the "mystery show" scene is a parody of Detective Conan.
The collectible card game that Kyon and Itsuki play in this episode is Dragon All Stars (ドラゴン☆オールスターズ).
At 12:53, the overheard line is from Air by Kunisaki Yukito.
From 13:02 to 13:15, the phrases overheard are puns on various Ace Magazine names.
The last shot of Haruhi, before the credit titles, is the same as the cover from the 6th novel in the Suzumiya Haruhi series, The Agitation of Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮ハルヒの動揺, Suzumiya Haruhi no dōyō?), but in mirror. [1] The novel in the series is about the making of the film Mikuru Asahina's Adventure Episode 00.

Well I decided to try some of the more unusual anime today and so I had a look at Gantz. Another Anime out of the Gonzo Studio pot and I found it actually quite entertaining. Nudity and crap aside the main character's constant analysis of the people around him is actually quite funny.

But right now I'd rather have Samurai champloo vol 4 than Gantz vol 2 but thats mainly because Champloo is full of more laughs.

Well it was once the 5th best anime according to animenfo.com, its now settled at around 15.
Its originally a school drama, but from the get go nothing is quite right with the characters as you'll discover.

Later into the story, the HiME's are pitted against each other and all hell breaks loose. Mai HiME is probably still my favourite anime i've ever seen and if anyone gets the opportunity to watch it they should.

Well it was once the 5th best anime according to animenfo.com, its now settled at around 15.

That's because otakus don't have fav animes, whatever their watching at the moment is their favorite anime ever.

Just a few questions

Are otakus just obessed fanboys?

I've just finnished the Sasuke retrival arc episodes so does that mean that i'm already on the fillers?

And should i now watch the 2nd movie or watch it later?

Depends on whether you want the American meaning or the Japanese one; the American meaning just means someone who likes anime a lot, the Japanese meaning means an anime geek, so is much more negative. However, some Japanese people use it as a badge of pride, just as some people here use "geek" as a badge of pride.

Anyway, the first mai-HiME DVD is out on Friday... apparently the dub is terrible; they've given Shizuru a Southern American accent. I'll buy it anyway, and watch the subs.

You said it all, it's a very ambiguous term.

No one should see those lists as a guidance because, this is not videogame ratings. As shino said, the most hardcore anime watchers's favourite anime is a lot of the times the most recent one they saw. So it's no surprise that the most recent animes are on the top of the lists and great past masterpieces keep getting lower and lower.

This is very true. I don't really consider myself an anime fan who endevours to watch mostly every new anime that is released. 99% of the recent anime is garbage to me, so I'm stuck with the 10 or so classics I've seen over time that I consider great. The only great anime series' I would recommend to anyone are Evangelion, RahXephon and Trigun.

When sequels to those come out, it's a very exciting day. The new Ah! My Goddess series being one of those sequels. It isn't a classic to most people by any means, but I love the characters so naturally it's a necessary watch.

Those lists are usually determined by popularity and not quality, also.

Since we'r in the subject: Out of the ones you watched, post the top ones that you liked A LOT (anime or manga), not just the okay ones, the ones you really love. I'm not gonna read 928 posts, but if this was already made in this thread: IGNore plzkthksbye.

My list that i would absolutely recommend to anyone, in no particular order:

Dragon Ball
Naruto
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Great Teacher Onizuka (aka GTO)
Berserk
Love Hina (just the manga, the anime completely pales in comparison)
Golden Boy
Azumanga Daioh
School Rumble

Long list, but i love them all big time.::shrug:

While in Japanese the term otaku has negative connotations, in English the term is slightly more flexible; some fans believe it has positive connotations, while other fans believe it has negative connotations, especially on internet forums.

Sorry, i have to double post...
Ok, i bring some news. To all Naruto watchers:

Studio Perriot has confirmed that Naruto will continue to show fillers until episode 225 at which point it will skip the Kakashi Gaiden Arc.

I mean... making some calculations i see we have fillers 'till February 2007! NOOO!! And they say they'r going to skip Kakashi gaiden? I was so waiting for that part! No 4th hokage in action...:weep:

(i hope this is not old)

February 2007.....oh my lord, i hope Naruto fails now. How the hell do they expect me to resist the manga til then. Surely not February....i mean we're on 192 now thats like 30 weeks. No way, that's too much time for them to ruin the storyline. Something just seems wrong bout it though, i'll hold onto my blind faith that 200 is where the new season will start - if it doesn't the anime can just piss off i'll just go read the mangas.

Blue_Ninja0
10-07-2006, 10:51 AM
We've had 60 fillers till today. 30 more is just insane, i didn't know the series could be so low. But they don't ruin the storyline because the fillers don't "count" as true episodes. February 2007... sigh... i hope you'r right and 200 is when it ends.

The3rdChildren

The Naruto fillers have killed it for me. The manga post-timeskip isn't very interesting either mind, but it'd make better animation than the stuff they're putting out now.

Shorty
10-07-2006, 02:49 PM
To be fair I think they do a good job of keeping the animation going. Most American shows just take a big 1-2 year break and then bring out the next season. At least they're giving us something. I just wish they would put some thought and effort into giving us a filler arc that we actually care about.

Quoted for the truth. HKDVDs are brilliant, affordable and have really come along in quality these past years after the chinese slaveboys who create them realised it was worthwhile to start making rips of region 1 DVDs instead of fansubbing episodes themselves.

I recently grabbed a HKDVD set of Tenchi Muyo! GXP and I'm loving it up. A whole series for under the price of a regular dvd? Yes please.

HKDVDs are all over eBay, and a wonderful HKDVD review site is Import Anime (http://www.import-anime.com).

It'll probably be a region 1 rip, so you're good to go. However it's from Asia, which could be a problem. Try and find one in the UK.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, in my opinion one of the best animated works ever to surface from Japan.

For a good idea of what the series is like, have a look here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=qAACuzGv1LU), then here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=s4n6kiX4UVw) and then here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=JcrPIgyK1wI). One of the better earlier episodes of the series.

HKDVD is so right. Why shell out an unreasonable £20 for 3 or 4 episodes of a series on DVD when you can have the entire thing AND be a cool pirate for the same price?

What does the HK stand for?

I watched that episode and i loved it, everything about it. Its not as ghey/corny as alot of Anime's ive seen can be, its very down to earth and funny.
Of course i didnt understand the story behind it but it drew me in none the less.

And can anyone tell me why it was easier to watch that than some of the dubbed versions ive seen?::shrug:

It stands for Hong Kong, which is where most of the DVD sets are produced.

And yeah, Evangelion is really good. It gets a lot more story-focussed with less to eventually no comedy later, since the plot is so important. The entire series is up on YouTube, although it's something people should really buy a copy of.

manga is brilliant, i have all 4 volumes. The art style seems to change slightly over the course of the 4 volumes. they even provide a translation guide in the back pages to explain what certain things mean. so crappy translation is explained

eg
"good morning musume"
was replaced with
"whats the story morning glory"?????

because western folks wouldnt get it.
It does irritate me when they do stuff like that... they should leave the Japanese. It's like when they translate honorifics.

They should just explain it somewhere else. (good morning musume is a reference to the J-pop group ne?)

Love Hina is a piece of trash compared to it's respective manga. Read it and you'll automatically agree with me. 1st they translate a 14 volume long manga to a 24 episodes series. 2nd as if 24 eps where too much, they add a lot of fillers in between and ignore every good scene from the manga and just add the most irrelevant stuff and 3rd the OVAS, instead of finalizing the anime as it should be, just tell a pointless fillers story about Keitaro's sister, wich is in love with his own brother wich i find sick.
If you'r going to watch love hina anime, then do yourself a favour and read the manga after the anime, not the inverse.

I also heard the GTO manga is pretty good. There is also a prequel of the GTO but it's only in manga form. From the times where he was still a gangsta.

Pretty big chunk of truth here. I saw the anime 1st and thought it was really good, but then i read the manga and... gosh, the anime just turned into below average.
I think evangelion is not overrated, it's really that good. You just have to be open minded. Depressing? Yes it is.

I only recommend watching anime on youtube if it has no action in it, or it will just get all blurry and you won't see the best parts the way they should be seen. And because watching licensed anime on youtube is just as illegal as downloading it from subbers i can only recommend you to download from the subbers, wich is damn fast nowadays. Not sure what bootleg set you have there as there are several HKDVD versions of the Evangelion series in existence.

Looks like you have the basic Perfect Collection there, which will not have the movie remakes of episodes 25 and 26 and the extended episodes 21-24. Not to mention the super remastered Renewal/Platinum versions that have been released. But those can be a treat for yourself once you've enjoyed the original version of Eva.

I posted a super long piece of writing several months back that explained all about Evangelion and the various releases. I'm going to try and find it now so you can understand too.

[edit]

Got it. Wow, this is a horrible piece of writing, but I hope it helps.

When GAiNAX was producing the Evangelion TV series (original 26 episode story) they began to run out of sufficient money to animate such a financially demanding show and it shows towards the end. Animation sequences are reused several times throughout the later episodes, there are a lot of cheats used to prevent them having to actually animate ANY movement.

This low-budget run culminated in the last two episodes when GAiNAX was forced to end the series on a different note than planned, with episodes 25 and 26 depicting what was happening with the character's inner conflicts and personalities at the end of the series with very vague hints of what was actually occuring in reality. These final two episodes occur on mostly black backgrounds with endless reused/cheap animation.

Ultimately the series finale was met with mixed reactions, good and bad. Mostly bad. It was a short while after the series ended that GAiNAX decided to do the "PROPER" ending to Evangelion. However due to time constraints in production, they decided it would be best to release to theatres a character-based recap of the animation series up to the episode 24 (Death) and then a preview of their "End of Evangelion" ending, lasting approximately 25 minutes (Rebirth).

This was followed several months later with the theatrical release of "The End of Evangelion", which is labelled as the true ending to the series. It is said these episodes occur as an alternative to episodes 25 and 26, but I see them as an expansion of the themes already introduced. Close inspection of the series and movie endings will give glimpses of The End of Evangelion to support this theory. The two endings occur concurrently, but are told from varying perspectives.

Furthermore, extended versions of episodes 21-24 were produced to incorporate expanded scenes, new animation and tweaked dialogue in order to help fans better understand some of Evangelion's more ambiguous points and events. These are often mis-labelled directors cuts by fans when they are in fact "more true" versions of the episodes than the original 21-24.

The companies responsible for bringing Evangelion to the dubbed world are ADV (original series and extended versions of 21-24 that are designed to replace the last two discs in the Perfect Collection boxed set). ADV produced a Perfect Collection boxed set which contains dubbed/subbed original releases of the show complete with poor video quality. More on ADV's part later.

Manga Entertainment are responsible for the movie releases here, and tried to retain as much of ADV's feel for the series as possible. Most of the voice actors return, and ADV's Perfect Collection and Manga's Death/Rebirth and End of Evangelion sit together comfortably. Manga have since released a compilation set of the movies which to date remains the best and only legitimate way to own them in this country.

Several years ago, GAiNAX began to put out advertisements speaking about the Renewal of Evangelion. Not a sequel, but a renewal of the series as the name entailed. This would see Evangelion re-released on DVD at last with a brand new digital print and 5.1 audio. This first hit in the form of a limited boxed set that was pre-order only and never sold at commercial retail (damned annoying as a DVD boxed set, but with great collectors value I'll add). They later began to release the DVDs in Japan in standard cases for those who missed out on the renewal boxed set and still wanted the best possible Evangelion experience.

ADV negotiated for the Western rights to Renewal but were only able to secure the original 26 episodes and the extended versions of episodes 21-24 because Manga Entertainment held the rights to the movies in the Western world. This did not stop them from releasing Evangelion Renewal under the title of "Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum" which is available in beautifully designed single disc releases both here and in the United States and as a thinpak cheaper re-release in the states as Dabookerman stated.

As Platinum is the best quality and legitimate way to obtain Evangelion, the best bet is to try and obtain the thinpack from somewhere and then grab Manga's releases of the movies. There -are- methods to obtain remastered dubs/subs of the movies but these are by no means legitimate and would warrent crucifixion (how fitting in the context of this series) if I started to chat in more depth about them here.

In addition to the television series and movies, there is also a brilliant manga series currently in serialisation in Japan and being released in the West by Viz. Whilst the manga diverts from the series storyline and waters down a lot of the philosophy shown, it provides a fantastic alternative take on the events that occured in the Evangelion anime and stands beside it as a fine companion piece. A bonus with the manga is a more consistent level of artwork by renowned artist, and original Evangelion character designer, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.

Is it really as short as 26 episodes?

That's the standard anime series length in Japan. Usually most seasons of anime in Japan are comprised of a 26 episode run.

I've just read some stuff about the UK release of Naruto - how Jetix have totally butchered the show xD such as letterboxing the shots to avoid blood, muting key lines and zooming out so you can't see various kunais. Very glad that being in the UK doesn't mean we have to put up with this nonsense. Typically the studio picked it up not understanding anime, and thought it was another kids cartoon, then when we got to stuff like the finale of the first season, out came the censorship :P

I heard another rumour that 209 will end the fillers because thats the official start of the next season? Still, quite a wait. Also the raw of the new movie is available, but my japanese is a little weak so I'll have to wait for the DVD :p

Yeah, the original was more a storybook thing, but the sequel for the PS2 was a fully fledged dating sim. Never played them, seeing as they look a bit crap.

its too mainstream IMO
The stupidest reason to dislike something, ever.

I think Naruto can be damn amazing, the animation and fight scenes are great, the story is moving and all the characters unique and interesting. The only problems are of course the fillers, that not only bore you to tears, but even ruin some of your favourite characters by taking away their sincerity - and the flashbacks. So many of the first 100 eps were cut short by showing 5-10 minutes of what happened in the episode before and that makes it drag.

That said I find the fight scenes really great, and I could never stand DBZ, I don't see the similarities really, only on a very superficial level. I see it as... Ninja Scroll (less gore) meets Final Fantasy :heh: Personally I can never see disliking something because of the current fanbase, enjoy things regardless of their popularity for the sake of experiencing something that makes you happy - you only live once etc. etc..

I watch Naruto on Jetix and i think its amazing
No, no, no. Find the American version at least. It's dubbed but at least it's not cut to ribbons. If you think the cut one is good, you'd love the original (I'm assuming you haven't watched the original). Even the small things like the lines they skip out not only take away the feel but they even screw up parts of the story. Jetix are butchering Naruto, go for cartoon network or ideally, fansubs.

I just watched the first Naruto movie.. I was disappointed. Just watched 100 episodes of the series, and this has nothing to do with it really.

Reminded me of the Pokémon movies (poor analogy, note I don't watch much anime), the story never had anything to do with the series, and were never mentioned in the series.

Blue_Ninja0
10-08-2006, 08:40 PM
The naruto movies are, as someone said before here, basically fillers with better animation.

I too would like that naruto was not that mainstream, but it is, and it is because it's really good. I can compare it to dragon ball if you'r going to say that it may, one day, reach an enormous popularity as dragon ball had. But you can't compare it's meat. Naruto's about stealth, tricky fighting and ninja stuff and not about powers that destroy half the world. And everything is explained, from how the world works to how all the ninja stuff work. Characters just don't go out kamehameha'ing they'r way through enemies.
One problem is the animation quality inconsistency of the series. Sometimes is ass bad and sometimes it's fantastic in scenes like the infamous Rock Lee vs Gaara.

^All that info does not apply to the fillers as those are utter crap where the main character always saves the day with his trademark technique. A cliché that i truly hate.

And as Shorty said, please don't watch the butchered versions. Fansubbers bring you the episode less than 24 hours after it aired in Japan.

Yes, Dragon Ball Z is one awesome anime. Too bad it's dubbed here. You know how shit the US episodes are compered to the originals? That's how much the serbian ones are worse compered to the US episodes. The voices are why everybody here thinks DBZ is for three years old kids. Anime should never be dubbed!

I think Naruto is brilliant. The story's not all about Naruto, but other characters too.

I re-watched the first two movies recently and I realised the music is also way better. Also, for fillers - they do have better stories and take themselves much more sincerely than some of the downright awful filler stories (like that one where Shino and Naruto had to avoid laughing? WTH?? Way to completely ruin Shino forever...)

Dragonball > Z in everyway.

Nah, Dragonball Z was seriously a great deal better. I watched the original japanese subs of Dragonball before they were censored by fucking Toonami and they're fucking boss, but DBZ is still a huuuuge deal better...

DBZ is, or used to be pretty much my greatest obsession (I even learnt to play all the themes on guitar). There really should be a thread just for it.

I can't believe toonami butchered the movies so fucking badly.

I didnt find Dragonball too appealing, i LOVED dragonball z. I found Dragonball GT very average but the ending was sweet.

I think the reason I didnt like Dragonball is the fact of knowing that everythings gonna be alright as I had seen Z and GT, why didnt they bother bringing them out in order?
Also, GT and the original dragonball were very childish, I was 12 when I watched them and therefore had no idea that I could get dubs of the uncut versions, but they absolutely sucked. Dragonball Z was the best series.

In my opinion it all comes together to tell the story of SonGoku's life, so it's all necessary and enjoyable, even if GT was a little crap.

It's funny, I've never stumbled accross any Naruto yaoi. Are you sure you weren't just searching for it? :heh:

Really? I suppose it just must be the forum i'm on, i think its the biggest Naruto forum in the world but the amount of yaoi fanclubs on it is immenese, though Sasuke in Neverland is pretty good.

I think i'm going to try to see if HMV have Neon Genesis Evangelion, i think they have the Platium edition but the Braehead store has really crap anime section.

Damn HMV only had The End of Evagelion and the Rebirth one. Still I got G.I.T.S. 2, for £10 they had Stand Alone Complex for £40 but i've seen it cheaper.

It seems ep 204 is going to be the end of the fillers. There is going to be a new opening, its changing to Thursdays instead of Wensday. Alot of people think that they will be one episode to send Naruto off and 3/4 of Kakashi Gaiden which will end on 209 which is when the new season starts. We hope...

I found everything after Frieza really painful, even in the original Japanese. It just became a joke after that, it really was nothing but 2 generic twats staring at one another and going 'Grrrr!'.
Dragonball and early Z had interesting fights, plots and every character wasn't some Super fucking Saiyan ****.
Anyone remember Yamcha, Tien or Launch?

I have recently got into the Naruto series. I started buying the US dvds but they are taking too long to come out so I have started youtubing the episodes. I am currently on episode 43 and im loving it!

Can someone tell me when I will start to hit all of the filler episodes?

I remember the days I would run home from school to watch this. I was so hooked on DBZ it was unimmaginable. DBZ is infinitely better than DB and GT.

I loved it when Goku turned Super saiyan for the first time. The memories.
The music was fucking amazing too.

Damm I love Dragonball Z. One of my GREAT passions.

Episode 137 (right after the ZOMG bit) is where the fillers really kick off.

I can't understand for the life of me people who watch shows on Youtube, how on earth can you stand that terrible quality? When you run out of English dubs (in 3 episodes time, it's only dubbed up to 46 and the subs are up to 196) you can't possibly plan to watch the subbed version on Youtube, you won't even be able to read the subtitles o_o

It's nice to see DragonBall Z is so appreciated around here. One of the things about anime fans that pisses me off is their constantly shifting loyalty between every new series to be released.

A person will start out watching anime with something like Pokemon or DragonBall Z and progress onto other shows which are considered better and eventually climb onboard the "I hate DBZ" train with all the other anime fans. Once on, they will all ramble on about it being nothing more than two guys trying to yell louder than each other - but it really isn't, for the most part.

Shitty misconceptions aside, show some RESPECT for a classic.

Besides... what more could you honestly want from a cartoon? Violence, death, yelling, comedy, cliffhanger ending almost every episode? DBZ is a cartoon for men. Girls can stick to Sailor Moon and Inuyasha.

[edit] If you want a PROPER thing to hate about DBZ, it's the fact that in the Japanese version none of the characters can say a sentence without choking at least once. Fact (http://youtube.com/watch?v=8RO8tCzVOXI).

Well Said!

DBZ will always be a classic, it was the first anime I ever watched and I still love it to this day. Sure, it has its flaws just like everything but it is still awesome to watch.

Although I havent watched much anime, but to this day I still think that the Gohan/Goku Kamehameha scene in the cell games is simply amazing. Also the one they do in one of the movie ( cant remember which one it is ) with Goten is awesome aswell.

I do have to admit though that Im enjoying Naruto more than I did with DBZ when it was this many episodes in.

Naruto, in my opinion, is the new DragonBall Z. Super powerful dudes kick each other's asses, except Naruto tries to have better character development and an ongoing plot as opposed to Akira Toriyama's story seeming as if it's constantly trying to find an end.

You might say Naruto is DBZ, but done right. I personally don't believe that last sentence is true, as my rose-tinting of DBZ over the years had left me with nothing but denial of any shortcomings in the series, despite knowing there are many. Still, it's nice to have a new figthing story to watch/read with as many, if not more, likeable characters as DragonBall/Z had.

It's rumoured throughout drawing the manga, Toriyama tried to end the story midway. The DragonBall story was originally supposed to end when Gohan defeated Cell and became the new defender of Earth, with SonGoku dead. Unfortunately the series was so popular, that he felt compelled to continue it, which is why the Buu saga seems to try and have some fun with Great Saiyaman, the moronic bad guy Majin Buu and Gotenks. I guess he figured that if he had to do it, he'd do it for fun.

I'm glad he did, the Buu saga of the anime had some lovely artwork and it introduces some of my favourite characters into the series.

Jesus, I can't believe I wrote half of that.
DBZ isn't that bad, but it's far from classic imo. And it isn't the anime that got me into anime :p
I suppose I dislike DBZ as it got rid of most of the best characters imo, and I really don't like the Saiyans. But it's not trying to be anything more than it is, which is good.
EDIT- A lot of what I said is directed at the anime, I enjoyed all of the manga pretty much.

Dragon Ball is the anime of my life in terms of memories. When it started airing here in 1996 or 1997 i was still a kid and it just penetrated the minds of every kid and adult in town. And i mean EVERYONE knew what dragon ball was, everything was flooded with dragon ball merchandise. A complete craze, and eventually news started to pop in saying that dragon ball was to blame when kids atacked each other. Kinda like when someone accused Pokémon from being too violent because a kid jumped from a 3 store high window, thinking he was butterfree.

I watched the French version, wich did not came from america, but i think it was heavily butchered anyway. And it was in horrific bad portuguese dubbing. I remember seeing in the news, kids asking for autographs to Songoku's portuguese voice actor. Insane times.

Drangon Ball (non-Z) still offered me the most magic, as i was a kid back then, and everything seems magic. Altough i think Z is overall better.

It's nice to see DragonBall Z is so appreciated around here. One of the things about anime fans that pisses me off is their constantly shifting loyalty between every new series to be released.

QFT. I hate those otakus whose "my favorite anime" change everyday, according to what they are actually seeing. That's why you can't trust online anime ranks.

The latest Naruto filler story was actually quite good.

I've watched 6 whole episodes and it's the best thing ever! Can't wait to see how the story pans out - I can't really tell what the main goal of it all will be.

I've watched 100 subbed episodes on youtube, the quality is poor but some are good and subtitles are easy to read surprisingly.

Though I intend to start buying the dvds soon.

I just bought the two GITS films from HMV for a pretty nice £14. I am hesitant however. How should this Anime be watched? Ive got the first series of GITS ordered and the second pre-ordered. Would you think it would be best to watch the films or TV series first?

I just bought the two GITS films from HMV for a pretty nice £14.

That sucks, i bought Innocence today from HMV at £10, i got the first one pretty cheap but not less than £14 for the both of them. Scotland sucks

Can any Scottish person help me, where its cheapest to get anime, in Glasgow i know of A1 Comics, Musiczone sometimes have anime cheap, Virgin Megastore but its full price. Or do i have to spend my money online?

Actually 196 was pretty cool as it showed that Lee & Gai can open up the fifth gate but Gai does alot more in the manga post-timeskip.

EDIT: Surprised i hadn't noticed it before but the 3rd Naruto OVA has been subbed, I quite like the first and the second was pretty good. I don't know what to expect from this one so i hope its good.
