My friend is going to give me the whole series of school rumble, just finished watching Gundam Seed Destiny, weak ending in comparison to the ending of Seed, but theres an Xmas special that wraps it all up can't wait for that, loved the rest of the series other then the final episode didn't feel right. Currently downloadin Wolf's Rain, also 228 or is it 288, Rapture TV basically people, not sure if you know already, but 8.30 for Full Metal Alchemist on Tuesdays, and same time on Thursdays for Wolf's Rain, only 3 episodes in so if you can't download the whole series get the first few episodes and watch from there on.

Hey, I like Zabuza. I got naruto manga 1-7. Started getting manga and anime last year. Dont know why it took so long, I first saw akira when it was on BBC 2 in the early 90's. my first purchase was ninja scroll.

lately I'm going through my rune soldier dvd's again (only cost £22 the series). Probably my favourite right now.

A mate of mine records his own voices/script for Get Backers. They're really quite funny.

Want to get samurai champloo, samurai deeper and trigun.

Half way through RahXephon at the moment; I don't know why I put off watching this series for so long, it really is an awesome show; much beter than Eva in my opinion.

I otally agree with you masaki86, I personally found RahXephon a better anime than Eva (which was a bit too depressing for me), for now I hooked on the Fruits basket manga, FMA and Bleach (animes).

Wow I've never heard of any of those, I'm pretty new to Anime/Manga so can someone recommend me something that isn't Bleach or Naruto?

Can't believe how long this thread has been around.

Anime:
Ninja scroll, R.O.D, RahXephon, G.I.T.S stand alone, Akira, Rune soldier, Get backers, Love hina, Trigun (really good), Fist of the North Star (old skool).

Manga:
Samurai deeper kyo, Trigun, Trigun Maximum, Eerie queerie (kinda gay, obviously), Kenshin, GTO, Eye shield 21, One piece, Sgt frog.

I'm Pretty new too, although I had been interested from the 90's. Anyway, this is where I started.

I've only got 1, but it was really good for the first volume. Been a bit crazy buying alot of other anime's, but when I get some more money I will buy the rest. No doubt.

Do you buy Neo? Thats a good magazine to keep up to date. Some prefer it to New Type.

I recently bought the Ghibli films 'Whisper of the heart' and 'Pom Poko'.
If your looking for high quality anime...don't look any further than studio Ghibli, they're the masters of their craft.
Whisper of the heart is now my 3rd favorite anime, after Spirited Away and Porco Rosso.

Also check out BLACK JACK, DOMINION Tank Police, and PERFECT BLUE and MILLENIUM ACTRESS.

I won RahXephon the motion picture a while ago, i think its a summarised version of the series, im not sure.
But it was damn good, it had similarities to neon genesis, except better animation and it wasnt confusing (confusing = bad, understandable = good)

Xeal
22-12-2005, 07:42 PM
Yeah. It's not confusing, but has a sense of mystery that grips you from the start. A bit like the suspense in Black Jack, don't you think.

I was quite disapointed with Bleach, the fights have no strategy, they all go dragon ball style, when they're almost losing some super power awakens and kills the enemy in badassness, the last episodes have a good fight for people who havent seen Naruto (what a fucking ripoff of the fight gaara vs rock lee!!!), the story is the best part and what made mee keep interest in the anime. If anyone here hasn't seen Naruto, stop everything else and go see it.

I've been watching Mai Otome, Bleach and Yakitate Japan (damn this contest really needs to end o.O) recently...... I have quite a few more to watch as well that I downloaded and just kinda abandoned on my hard drive. XD

A quick suggestion to those that were asking for some nice anime to watch...... Get FLCL and Narutaru....... Two animes you won't here TOO much about even though they are great just because they aren't one of the big series that people watch... Really worth while checking out. lol

Oh and if anyone wants a quick laugh download Dokuro Chan...... Don't do any research into it though, just get the first episode and be prepared for a shock. lol

Oh one thing....... Please someone tell me...... Is ah my goddes worth watching? I downloaded the series randomly when I saw a torrent up for some reason and after a bit of the first episode I was a bit dissapointed. v.v If it's not I could really use freeing up some space no my computer. lol

One last thing........ I have like 99.9% of every episode of Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien as I was downloading it when it got licenced (well kinda people got ordered to remove it v.v)........ So yeah, at 99.9% of my download I was cut off...... If someone with the whole series (subbed by Lunar) could add me to msn I would really, really like to talk to you....... >.<

Oh and I get my anime from tokyolibrary..... (Wonders who will get this. >.<)

Also, just so you all know and are prepared, there will be bad news for bleach fans soonish....... We will be faced in the near future with one of 3 possible outcomes........

1) An ending to the series which doesn't follow the manga.... :shakehead

2) A long break to the series..... So no more bleach for ages...... :shakehead

3) This could be the worst of all ::shrug: FILLERS!

Yeah this is basically going to happen because the anime is quickly catching up to the manga and I do mean quickly...

I'm pretty sure bleach will get fillerised soon so yeah.... We might end up with real Naruto and fake Bleach through this year. XD

I personally think there is more potential for filler bleach then naruto though... If they can do the style of episodes the series started with I'll be happy... They didn't really cover TOO much story, but, were still enjoyable. ^^d

And someone please remind me about the anime show closer to the 19th. lol I wanna see what they come up with. :)

O god no! Not bleach fillers, if they were inline with the initial episode style it'll still be bad because i didnt think too much of the first 10 or so bleach episodes.
I wouldnt mind a bleach break, its what they did with hunter x hunter so that the mangaka could produce more manga in that time.

Their prices are extremely good, much much cheaper than UK DVDs and their shipping prices are real damn good, even with the shipping added to the price, it is still so much more cheaper.

Oh I forgot to mention...... I just watched Iriya No Sora, UFO No Natsu and I have to say it was better then I expected when I randomly downloaded it. XD Really is a very story based anime without much action (I guess), but, it's still exciting and keeps you very hooked......... It's especially a good series for people with a slow connection to watch seeing as it's only 6 episodes long... Oh and nows a really good time to get it as a new group has just started subbing it (dunno why o.O) and they have released 5 eps in like 5 days..... So yeah, lots of seeds. ;)

Yes! Change that "one of the best" to "the best" and you'll be completely right!

If you watch Destiny, make sure you get the special version of the last episode. It's an extra 20 minutes or so longer and makes for a much better ending. And if you haven't found it already, the little five minute OVA for the first Gundam Seed is kinda fun to watch too.

I prefer 26-32 eps max. Unless it runs over 3-4 series. But i'd never watch something that is over 100 episodes.

Will anyone be getting Howls Moving Castle? I loved it. When it was in the cinema I went to see it twice. What I love is that you can watch it on two different levels. You can really think about the themes and characterisation, or you can simply sit back and enjoy the spectacle. I saw the English version, and it was another excellent dubbing job from Disney studios. Billy Crystal was surprisingly good as Calcifer. I bought another one of Dianne Wynne Jones novels after seeing it, but haven't got round to reading it yet. Must do that soon...

It is an awsome film. I bought the Japanese DVD release and the Japanese voice acting is far better than the English dub. I do feel that it's one of Miyazaki's weaker films, the story can be awfully confusing the first time round, but it's still fantastic.

It took ages to get going, unlike HiME. Hmmm i'd say ep 12 or so, but there are moments early on in the series.

At the moment, Arika and Nina are both Meistar Otome. Basically the highest level, Mai will also definatly appear in the series as she is in the 2nd intro (the one i posted last week). We can expect HUGE fights between 3 groups of people: Otome's, Aswald and Shaltz (i can't spell that...)

i just finished watching Mai Hime and it was real good. The last 6 or 7 eps were the best and in my opinion lifted the series. It's one of the few series that makes you wonder what happens next nearly all of the time, and make u shout inside ur head like "what the fack u doin" lol

This series will lie just outside my favourites, i guess one reason bein cos i kept comparin the manga and anime (which follow the same storyline but are developed completely differently), i probably would have liked this series a whole lot more if i didnt think bout the manga while watching it.

edit: o yea is tate yuuichi and mai tokiha in mai otome or is it jus some of the girls? and if they r do they share a similar relationship as in mai hime?

Jordan
04-02-2006, 12:54 PM
Tate is called Sergay in the new series. Although, there is a story in Mai Otome which shows shadows of Tate and Mai holding hands... (its in a book of some sort.)

But no, Mai Otome is set in a totally different universe. But shares several qualities with Mai HiME. Alot of returning characters basically, thats what makes it so fun to watch because they change so much.

One anime that really surprised me was Patlabor. I bought Patlabor 1 & 2 on the basis that I was gettingsome nice stompy-robot action. What I wasn't expecting was the fantastic techno political thriller that the stompy robot action was just a small part of. Patlabor 2 especially is a particulary gripping and philsophical film about the morality of war set amongst a major crisis in Japanese politics as the country slowly spirals towards civil war. Excellent stuff.

Has anyone seen the movie Metropolis? The art style is the same as Astro Boy as its by the same Art director and it has the same themes about a robot with a human like personality. I am in love with this film, as everything from the animation to the music to the characters themselves as well as theme and plot are impecable. But what really amazed me was the ending sequence, its so sweet and sad at the same time, its absolutely unmissable and if anyone hasn't seen it yet, I urge you to ASAP. I'm sure you can get it for cheap at Play.com, you won't regret it.

Yeah I know, I must have watched it on youtube about 50 times- I'd say it's better than the mai-hime OP. Unfortunately there's no new ED though- the current one is crap- just the same animation the whole way through.

no lol

In Japan there was a break in airing the series halfway through, due to some issue with the channels, so while it was being transferred to a different channel there was about a month or so break before they showed the next episode of samurai champloo.
And i followed the series when the first episode was fansubbed, hence there was a break for me too

Artwork is superb. The budget goes a bit way-hay in the end and you get a mixed bag. Some episodes are also drawn horribly (episodes three, four and six as examples), but those are just teething problems and easily overlooked in the grand scale of things.

IIRC, there is possibly brief naked breast appearances(nothing you havent seen before if you have seen a 15 film).

Innocence is the Sequel to GitS. It follows on a few years after the events of the first film, but doesnt focus of Motoko(lead in the first one)but follows her partenr Batou. I can't say why as It'd spoil the first one.

there is the platinum collection which has all 26 episodes remastered + 4 extended versions of 21-24. altho theres none in this country, i go the region 1 version of ebay, you will also want end of evangelion as that is the "true" ending of evangelion

Dabookerman is absolutely right. To elaborate:

When GAiNAX was produing the Evangelion TV series (original 26 episode story) they began to run out of sufficient money to produce such a financially demanding show and it shows towards the end. Animation sequences are reused several times throughout the later episodes, there are a lot of cheats used to prevent them having to actually animate ANY movement.

This low-budget run culminated in the last two episodes when GAiNAX was forced to end the series on a different note than planned, with episodes 25 and 26 depicting what was happening with the character's inner conflicts and personalities at the end of the series with very vague hints of what was actually occuring in reality. These final two episodes occur on mostly black backgrounds with endless reused/cheap animation.

Ultimately the series finale was met with mixed reactions, good and bad. Mostly bad. It was a short while after the series ended that GAiNAX decided to do the "PROPER" ending to Evangelion. However due to time constraints in production, they decided it would be best to release to theatres a character-based recap of the animation series up to the episode 24 (Death) and then a preview of their "End of Evangelion" ending, lasting approximately 25 minutes (Rebirth).

This was followed several months later with the theatrical release of "The End of Evangelion", which is labelled as the true ending to the series. It is said these episodes occur as an alternative to episodes 25 and 26, but I see them as an expansion of the themes already introduced. Close inspection of the series and movie endings will give glimpses of The End of Evangelion to support this theory. The two endings occur concurrently, but are told from varying perspectives.

Furthermore, extended versions of episodes 21-24 were produced to incorporate expanded scenes, new animation and tweaked dialogue in order to help fans better understand some of Evangelion's more ambiguous points and events. These are often mis-labelled directors cuts by fans when they are in fact "more true" versions of the episodes than the original 21-24.

The companies responsible for bringing Evangelion to the dubbed world are ADV (original series (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004REOQ/qid=1140643266/sr=1-8/ref=sr_1_11_8/202-5953412-5504657) and extended (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000YEE44/qid=1140643101/sr=1-13/ref=sr_1_2_13/202-5953412-5504657) versions (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00011ZBUW/qid=1140643101/sr=1-12/ref=sr_1_2_12/202-5953412-5504657) of 21-24 that are designed to replace the last two discs in the Perfect Collection boxed set). ADV produced a Perfect Collection boxed set (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000639E0/qid%3D1140642698/202-5953412-5504657) which contains dubbed/subbed original releases of the show complete with poor video quality. More on ADV's part later.

Manga Entertainment are responsible for the movie releases here, and tried to retain as much of ADV's feel for the series as possible. Most of the voice actors return, and ADV's Perfect Collection (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000639E0/qid%3D1140642698/202-5953412-5504657) and Manga's Death/Rebirth (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007OC6LA/qid=1140642749/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_10_1/202-5953412-5504657) and End of Evangelion (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000083EEH/qid=1140642783/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_10_1/202-5953412-5504657) sit together comfortably. Manga have since released a compilation (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0009S4J5K/qid=1140642783/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_10_3/202-5953412-5504657) set of the movies which to date remains the best and only legitimate way to own them in this country.

Several years ago, GAiNAX began to put out advertisements speaking about the Renewal of Evangelion. Not a sequel, but a renewal of the series as the name entailed. This would see Evangelion re-released on DVD at last with a brand new digital print and 5.1 audio. This first hit in the form of a limited boxed set (http://geofront.x-y.net/evajpdvdbox/dvdbox3.jpg) that was pre-order only and never sold at commercial retail (damned annoying as a DVD boxed set, but with great collectors value I'll add). They later began to release the DVDs in Japan in standard cases for those who missed out on the renewal boxed set and still wanted the best possible Evangelion experience.

ADV negotiated for the Western rights to Renewal but were only able to secure the original 26 episodes and the extended versions of episodes 21-24 because Manga Entertainment held the rights to the movies in the Western world. This did not stop them from releasing Evangelion Renewal under the title of "Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum" (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0006SJ3LI/qid=1140643948/sr=8-5/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i5_xgl/202-5953412-5504657) which is available in beautifully designed single disc releases both here and in the United States and as a thinpak (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000767QTA/qid=1140644007/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-0824578-4347068?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130) cheaper re-release in the states as Dabookerman stated.

As Platinum is the best quality and legitimate way to obtain Evangelion, the best bet is to try and obtain the thinpack from somewhere and then grab Manga's releases of the movies. There -are- methods to obtain remastered dubs/subs of the movies but these are by no means legitimate and would warrent crucifixion (how fitting in the context of this series) if I started to chat in more depth about them here.

In addition to the television series and movies, there is also a brilliant manga series currently in serialisation in Japan and being released in the West by Viz. Whilst the manga diverts from the series storyline and waters down a lot of the philosophy shown, it provides a fantastic alternative take on the events that occured in the Evangelion anime and stands beside it as a fine companion piece. A bonus with the manga is a more consistent level of artwork by renowned artist, and original Evangelion character designer, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.

I think that's about everything...

Its quite a long series, and the last few episodes are total mind fucks but over all the animation is really well done and the story is quite well contained, but its not as well explored as the manga, due to money and time constraints.

The manga is telling a better story, in my opinion. I guess that's to be expected when Yoshiyuki Sadamoto has the original animation to work from. He can simply bend the story any way he wants. Most of his changes have been for the better.

I completely agree with you, but otome is still a pretty good anime (thats how good Hime is...). Although the ep 19 was crap, I reckon the show's story is getting a bit more interesting, and mai's appearance should improve it as well, as long as she isn't just at the very end.

Plus, it's great getting to see all the old characters of HiME reincarnated.

Ep 19 was a "calm before the storm" episode so to speak. Some serious shit is gunna go down in the next few and final episodes. I can see Mai coming in on ep 20 to get Arika and Mashiro out of their current 'situation'.

I'm up to Ep 17 with SS good episode.

When Ers chan died yea it was sad but not as much as when Maes Hughes died in FMA. Probably cos they didn't quite set the whole feel of the series or episode for something as dramatic as that, neither the character interaction/development was that great to care about a character like her much. But Episode 17 was overall very good much better than most of the previous episodes.

And Arika looks cool when she materializes :D
Sorry for the editing :p got to go eat.

Theres much worse to come...

This series unlike the first one, is much much more than a conflict of love interest. It it has the capability of becoming an all out war against nations and the fight for the Otome's survival.

On the topic of GITS, I will go out on a limb here, and say that Innocence is better than GITS. I watched both films, one day after the other and here is what I came up with.

Innocen has Stunning visuals, great dub, excellent action scenes and an intriguing story. GITS has all of these, but just hasn't stayed in my mind as much as innocence. I really hated the crappy ending with motoko in the first film, it just felt rushed and tacked on. The closing of the story was performed much better in innocence; plus Basset Hounds 4tw.

Super sweet DVD collection up there. I love the RahXephon DVD box artwork.

I don't really own that many super cool anime items, but here are a couple of my favourite anime posessions.

The Japanese Neon Genesis Evangelion Renewal DVD box, released as a limited edition and out of print. It's also somewhat noteworthy to mention that customs totally raped me with this one. It's the most inconvenient DVD boxed set design ever conceived but it wins on cool factor alone. Beside it are the original region 2 Japanese movie releases with a beautiful cover illustration by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/The3rdChildren/IMG_0584.jpg

The biggest Rei Ayanami statue I could obtain without going into the thousands for a lifesize one. It has a bizarre colour variation between the head and neck (separate pieces) that I really should get around to amending sometime. Also you might notice a few nicks and chips on it that mysteriously appeared one day (scary story). Beside it is a bag of loose figurines from various franchises (Bucky o' Hare, Asterix, Resident Evil 1 and 2) and my 1:1 lifesize Gremlins 2 statue.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/The3rdChildren/IMG_0585.jpg

Another favourite useless thing are my Trigun sunglasses which I can sadly never wear (I have regular glasses, and people would beat me up) and aren't being pictured. I've posted a picture of me wearing those before and someone from the forums sent me a fucking nail bomb in the post.

What is so inconvenient about the NGE Renewal box?

http://geofront.x-y.net/evajpdvdbox/dvdbox3.jpg

It's just a huge campaign to open the damned thing, select a disc through trial and error because they have no episode names on them (stupid Japanese), and then finally have to put it all back again. Conventional boxes are so much better. Plus the jewel holders the discs come in are held together very flimsily. It's a typical cheapo GAiNAX move. The entire box reeks of their "maximum in, minimum out" policy.

Not to say it doesn't LOOK fantastic and unique, it does. It's just that the individual DVD releases have such nicer artwork, so nice in fact I may just consider investing in the ADV renewal releases sometime soon.

I think it's funny, I mean - he is just a kid after all, and kids say these things. Not only that but his own teammates make fun of it, proving that the dubbers themselves know the hilarity of it. Sure we'd prefer them to remain a little more sensible from time to time - but that doesn't mean I'm going to pretend that the Japanese which I can't understand at all sounds any better, or spend the whole time reading subtitles and missing the action.

This is just IMO, and I know it's controversial for the 'hard-core' fans - but that's just me :)

Me and my flatmate watched Howl's Moving Castle last night. It sucked prime donkey balls. I'm not joking, it was shit.

You guys who haven't seen it HAVE to watch Samurai Champloo - I'm on Ep 18 and it's been mesmirising; the first Anime to have a "magical" feeling on me like playing Zelda OOT for the first time or something.

It absolutely shit-kicks Naruto and Bleach IMO, I can't believe I hadn't noticed it earlier.

i don't know OOT thing but its deffinitly more polished gem than your average anime. great watch along with a ending that was not FCuked up, well not nearly as FCuked up as most anime endings (well i like it) but some people thought it was stupid, it was not.

Ermmm he does actually say something at the end of pretty much all his lines, but, it's really nothing like "Believe it!" Infact it means nothing really..... Oh and ermm as far as I can remember no one ever makes fun of it. o.o So yeah that's something nice added in for you guys or something. lol

Anyway that's not really my main problem with the dub..... It's a mass gathering of crapness that annoys me..... Believe it!

Ohhhh that's addicting.... =P

I need some anime movie recommendation. I have so far seen:

Akira
10 Ghibli films
Tokyo Godfathers

I'm going to download Ghost in the Shell 1-2 and Complex soon. Any recommendation for films? I've heard that Cowboy Bebop is good but I don't know if you have to have seen the series to be able to watch it. And is Steamboy any good?

Ack! Somebody help me! I can't find an Anime that matches Samurai Champloo, I'm getting a bit frustrated. I watched a few episodes of Evangelian and that was a bit meh... anyone know any of some great Anime?

I think my standards are too high now after I finished Champloo - It's one of those Anime you wish would last forever.

...well does Evangelion get interesting? It's pretty slow at the moment but a lot of dudes here seem to like it.

...well does Evangelion get interesting? It's pretty slow at the moment but a lot of dudes here seem to like it.

I haven't seen this Samurai Champoo thing people keep ranting about, but if it's your first major anime series it'll leave a big print on you forever, and you'll always be comparing it to everything else, which will sadly ALWAYS fall short of your expectations due to the deep shade of red we rose tint things.

Evangelion starts off as a rather generic-with-subtle-hints-at-something-more robot show where every week a new monster shows up and the characters deal with it in new ways. It isn't until midway through the series that we start to see hints of what's actually going on and the series starts to move into the direction that made it so controversial/popular.

The series is set up in the following way:

Prologue Arc - Episodes 1-7
Action Arc - Episodes 8-13
Descent Arc - Episodes 14-19
The End - Episodes 20-26, extended episodes 21-24 and The End of Evangelion that expands and retells episodes 25 and 26 of the series.

If you're more than halfway through and still finding it slow, it might not be the one for you. I watched Evangelion as one of my first animes and thus it left something of a print on me rose-tinting it. It isn't perfect and it has aged sort of poorly, but I hope you can enjoy it for what it is. I'd see it through incorporating the movies and then pass judgement.

If you enjoy these mysterious, dramatic robot shows then I'd suggest RahXephon as your next watch. It takes elements we've seen in Eva and presents them in a much more (in my opinion) up-to-date fashion with nicer animation, a more entertaining main character and a plot similarly apocalyptic.
