Sony has delayed the release of the PS3 till 2007 for PAL regions.

Aussie-Nintendo (http://www.aussie-nintendo.com/?v=news&p=4783).

Nintendo now has a prime capitalisation opportunity.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces New March 2007 date for European Launch of PLAYSTATION 3

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces New March 2007 date for European Launch of PLAYSTATION 3
No change in launch date for Japan and North America

London, Wednesday 6 September 2006 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that it would revise the launch date of its PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system in the PAL territories of Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia from 17th November 2006, as previously announced to March 2007.

Launch dates for Japan and North America will remain the same, which are November 11th and November 17th respectively.

The revision of the launch date in the SCEE territories is caused by the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PLAYSTATION 3.

The previously announced PLAYSTATION 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cool indeed for PS3 haters or people that aren't interested in PS3 and even people that are going to buy a PS3, will give them an additional opportunity to save up a few extra dollars.

Nintendo needed to this happen and now they must capitalise on it.

Serves them right for their fancy Blu-ray lasers. I doubt they ever took the November release date seriously.

Also, the 6 million is a number I doubt they'll achieve. Not with a Wii and 360 headstart and not if they delay it for the entire world.

I think its even more important to get the Wii out in europe now the PS3 has been delayed. People will be pissed about the PS3 and the Wii can capitalise on the christmas market. A november release in europe would be perfect, they would catch the christmas market and anyone who coudlnt afford a 360. This delay is the best news nintendo of europe could of hoped for.

a europe november release is a must now. really start to drive the nail into the coffin (sp). the only problem though is that nintendo can hold back from a europe release till the latest feb now and swamp the japan and america markets with the wii console to really take advantage but that means we lose out.

Nintendo probably knows this is their chance. Production of the Wii should be good enough for a worldwide release. I really doubt that now they have extra time in their hands they'll just radically change their plans.

now people will either wait for PS3 before even thinking about looking at the Wii or Wii wil totally kick ass this Christmas. Nintendo better not make us wait till 2007 for Wii.

TBH it all kinda makes sense now, i mean the low production yield and the fact that as of about 2 weeks ago sony still hadnt started manufacture.

i bet all the people who have prorders are pretty pissed about it. i mean it was originally spring 2006, then November as a water tight date, now its some time in March 2007, almost 2 years after the PS3 first got 'demoed' with that Killzone trailer *snigger*

Well if Nintendo learnt anything from the DS - PSP situation in Europe (as someone said... just re-iterating!) then they will keep a European '06 launch for the Wii!!!

People who considered getting a PS3 (note - considered) may well look to a suitable, value for money, alternative for their gaming fix... the so called "Wii60".

Yeah like Reggie said once... when annoucing DS sales against PSP "We got to Europe when we said we would, they didnt thats no our problem" or something along those lines.

Getting a head start against the PS3 will do wonders for the Wii... shops wont have a choice in which console to push come christmas time... because Wii will be the only new hardware to push and shops like Game will know thats where they are gonna make there money!

To be fair were not ready for Blu-Ray and HDTVness in Europe, its only a minority that would currently use these features.

Its just a shame, people who just want a PS3 are going to have to wait because of all these pointless extras sony are forcefully putting into the PS3. And bumping up the price $$$. It also gives HD DVD a chance if they want to make it in europe, because once people start buying PS3's Blu-Ray is the king.

According to the BBC's Poll

Have the latest delays put you off buying a PlayStation 3?
Yes - 67.69%

Hmm, what about the non-video game aspect of this news?

HD-DVD will now have a strong lead in Europe. This could very well be the next Betamax. Sony was counting on the PS3 being the premier Blu-Ray DVD player to push the format.

Now, that edge has been lost for at least 4 months.

Apparently this is what was sent to devs this morning

Good morning.

I have some important but disappointing news to inform you about this morning. SCEE will announce publicly today at 8am London time that the launch date of PLAYSTATION 3 in the PAL territories is being delayed from November 17th this year until March next year- 2007. This delay has been brought about by a shortage of the blue laser diodes, manufactured by SONY and needed for the Blu-Ray disc drive fitted to PLAYSTATION 3. This shortage is currently limiting production and preventing SCEI from manufacturing the numbers required for a full worldwide simultaneous launch of PS3 in November.

It is important to note that there is no problem whatsoever with the PS3 itself - indeed, the launch in the USA and Japan will go ahead as previously announced.

I, and other members of the Executive Committee have been fully involved in the discussions over the delay in the PAL launch and we fully support the decision to delay in Europe rather than in any other Region. Whilst we share the frustration at being unable to bring PS3 to our consumers before Christmas, we recognise that the decision was made for sound strategic reasons and is for the long term good of the PlayStation brand.

Whilst it is small compensation, every member of SCEE can take satisfaction in knowing that it is through your hard work over the past few years that we are in the best position of any SCE Region to take such a delay in our stride.

It is easy to see such a delay as a setback. There are, however, a number of apparent advantages to us and to our consumers in launching later than other Regions. The principal one is that we will be able to launch with a much enlarged portfolio of launch titles in March and some of these titles will have benefitted from a slightly longer development period. It is very important also that we remember that both PS2 and PSP are vital to the Company's well being and that refocussed efforts in this direction will reap rewards long term.

From a software perspective, nothing changes, both the development and the marketing must proceed at the current breakneck pace.

Although I would not have wished for this delay, we have now a unique opportunity to turn this to our advantage and I ask everyone to work even harder to retain the confidence and trust of our customers and consumers alike.

During the day, we will be informing all of our key partners, suppliers, third party developers and SONY sister companies and then we will rapidly be 'reconfiguring' for a launch in March. This will be a busy period but I know I can count on you to approach it with the dedication, commitment and good humour that is the hallmark of PlayStation.

You will be able to find a link to the full press release from SCEE between 8am and 8.30am London time on SID. All MD's and PR Managers will receive the release and a Q and A from Nick Sharples prior to public release.

Thank you very much to everybody at SCEE for your understanding

David

Anyway, I find highly improbably that a similar thing is going to strike Nintendo. This PS3 development has taken many by surprise, but rumours about manufacturing difficulties of the unit have been circulating for awhile, while Nintendo have to date has suffered no such ill reputations. I'll be really quite surprised if wii isn't out in Europe by Christmas, and even if it is delayed in a similar fashion it's a safe bet Nintendo will have a hella lot more units available.

i feel sorry for the blind PS3 supporters and those who stuck up for the company post e3 after they failed to deliver on the previous years promise and failed to hit the initial march 06 launch date, then stole ideas from the 360 (market place, points, guide button) then stole from Wii, and left out a rumble feature, oh and the $600 price tag and now with a further delay in PAL regions and naff all good launch games when it finally does launch in the NTSC regions, oh, which will have such stock shortages as to make the 360 launch look a totally success.

sony love breaking promises and totally screwing over their fanbase, which i should think by now is going to get at least a 360 or Wii or both.

i really do feel sorry for PS3 fans, but hey theres always Wii :D

Dear Sony: It's Over

I'm sorry that it's come to this, but there was really no other way for me to tell you how I feel. By the time you read this I will be gone. I realise now that it's over between us and has been for a long time now. It's time to stop this charade and admit that we're not right for each other and probably never were.

18 D batteries Jesus Christ do I look like a tunnel? Oh sorry talking out loud here. Anyway what's news? I was going to write about Guitar Hero 2 today, but this news kind of just got me real cranky. I'll complain about Guitar Hero 2 next week. Heart Shaped Box, what the hell is that. It was a song written for Courtney "I deserve to die and have my maggot filled corpse spat on by passerby in the street" Love. I prefer to call her Courtney Cuntface, but that's just me. Um. God. Alyson Hannigan really is cute. Aww.

Remember back in May, when when you showed me that stupid wireless controller thing that nobody else wanted? That was a rough time for me, and all my friends told me that I should leave then, but I stuck it out and I thought we worked past it. I was determined that our future together with the Play Station 3 was going to be worth all the troubles. Blue Ray! Metal Gear Solid 4! It was such a beautiful dream and I wanted it to be true no matter what.

Then you unvieled the price. Six hundred fucking dollars! Do you even know how much that is? And then there's the exorbitant markup that you gave the European market. I can't afford that. Nobody I know can afford that. And then you tried to placate me with excuses about how it's cheaper than other things, like that fancy computer from Tron. And like a fool i believed you! I even put down a pre-order! Looking back now, I realise i was being naive and that you were just using me for cheap thrills. Well, no more.

Today was the breaking point. Delaying the PlayStation 3 to March 2007 because you couldn't make enough machines in time is the ultimate betrayal. Remember that slide show you put up at E3, Sony?

It said November 17.

Not March 2007.

And then there's the reduced American ship numbers and the paltry Japanese launch - how long until you start letting me down on those promises, too? I can't wait for you to show me any sign of commitment any more. It's over. I've returned my pre-order slip. The lies, the delays, the embarassing press conferences...I've had enough. You can keep your precious Japanese and American release dates. Your pathetic indifference to the promise you made to me about the November release date show you just don't care about my happiness. Fuck you, you selfish prick.

I've found someone else. They're reliable. They're here for me. They have a cool range of cheap games. Even that Assassins Creed game that was apparently just for you. It's an Xbox 360 and we're going to be happy together forever now that I'm finally rid of you.

Goodbye.

Like RedShell said, what do you expect? It's a Nintendo forum. Let the kids have fun with Sony's screw up. It's Sony's problem anyway, the diode issue is from their own manufacturing facilities.

Sony screws Europe over just as much as, if not more so than Nintendo.

And quite frankly, people that are posting the "USA centre of the world" garbage aren't too far fetched. That's how companies treat that place anyway.

Does it really matter? Sony always do this.. I was gonna get a PSP until the shipment for Europe got rerouted to the states in order to satisfy demand.

I went and bought a DS instead.. but why would that make you happy?

You really think there will be loads of people like me who will suddenly jump ship because the coolest 16-24 year old gadget gets delayed a few months? Meh.. think again.

Sony have Europe in their hands, stronger economy, more marketing they can afford to fuck the Europeans around.

Nintendo might sell a few more consoles.. whoopdeedoo.

You take it too personally, stop acting like you have shares in Nintendo and announcements like this will affect your investment..

Nintendo might sell a few more consoles.. whoopdeedoo.

ok for one i dont see why you are getting so up-itty about it. do you have shares in sony? HHHMMMM???? :shakehead if so unlucky.

it is human nature to make fun of others misfortune. as nintendo fans we have taken this sort of mocking for many years now. now we get a chance to hit back and it wrong????

and the thing that made me laugh i mean really ROFL was this "the coolest 16-24 year old gadget". my oh my the brainwash has worked.

Anyone else thinking that this leaves the door right open to do whatever they want with the Wii in Europe now? Even if they originally were going to launch it in Europe in 2006, they'll be thinking again now as they have time to 'prepare' for the launch better....

Ninty have had plenty of time to prepare. Don't forget, Ninty have to launch in in Japan and the US too so the games have to be ready regardless of the euro situation. Ninty have been manufacturing consoles since June, they're more than ready for a worldwide launch!

I very much doubt Nintendo will delay launching the Wii just so they've got more time to prepare unless they have significant problems of their own. They'll have been praying this and know that this is the perfect oppertunity to steal undecided customers away from Sony over the Christmas period.

Just got back from school and read this news...it's great! Well, for Nintendo obviously, because it means MORE sales for them.

Also what's great is that Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Galaxy and Wario Ware all come out 3-6 months after launch, so we could see Nintendo launching the game closer to PS3.

I agree.

Nintendo has 3 press events planned next week where they will propably announce all the launch details of Wii in each territory. If they have decided a 2006 release for Wii in Europe, Sony´s announcement won´t change that. It´s kind of late to do that now.

similar to me-that was the plan before this news, now it'll probably mean i'll have to wait longer to get my DMC and FF XIII fix as the PS3 will be stupidly expensive when it launches and sony are always slow in price dropping unless they gain some intelligence and figure they're going to need to price drop pretty quickly to catch up with the 360.

I've always owned 2 consoles. The last 2 generations have made me buy a ps1 and a ps2 but I'm not so sure about this gen. I'll most likely get my wii and see who wins out of sony and microsoft (besides I dont like paying over £200 for a console, so might as well wait for the price drops). So far the 360 appeals to me more, but it needs more games...

Anyway im thinking that wii will win this xmas because I doubt that microsft will advertise the 360 as much as they should, while I think nintendo will go all out.

Mircosoft
Microsoft Stance:

Decision to move launch date is "not surprising"

Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson said that Microsoft is not surprised Sony has "backed away" from its commitment to a global launch for PlayStation 3.
"We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch, so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plan, due to the unproven technology they are trying to pack in to their console," he said.

Microsoft brought Xbox 360 to market in Europe, Japan and North America late last year, pulling off a simultaneous global launch - although hardware shortages did follow. With the PS3 delayed until March, MS now faces one less competitor this Christmas; but according to Thompson, that will make little difference to the success of Xbox 360.

"Europe remains a priority for us. That is why gamers have been able to experience Xbox 360 from day one, and why we're confident we're going to have a great Christmas - regardless of what competitors are or are not in the market," he stated.

Thompson went on to observe that Xbox 360 owners will have more than 160 software titles to choose from, with the likes of Viva Pinata, Gears of War, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 and FIFA 2007 due out in time for Christmas.
In addition, Thompson continued, Xbox 360 offers "a growing and innovating online gaming service, fantastic entertainment capabilities, optional HD-DVD capability and a great value price".

He concluded, "These factors will help us reach our goal of 10 million consoles sold worldwide by the end of the year."

Posted this in the news thread, but thought it would be worth repeating here:

OK, there's a simple reason why Sony have allocated 400,000 PS3's, for the US launch, and it will be typical Sony BS. When MS launched the 360, they pretty much evenly split their systems across all three regions, this meant they only had 360,000 Xbox 360's for the US launch; anyone see where this is going?

Come the end of the week, following 17th November, Sony will send out their press release stating how successful their launch was; they completely sold out and did better than Microsoft, when they launched their system last year. It's probably down to the appalling Japan sales, of the 360, that Japan has then only got 100,000, because they'll be able to claim they out-performed MS there, too.

So, who wants to take the bet?

PioRow
07-09-2006, 01:40 PM
Saying you outperformed the xbox 360 in japan is like saying I sold more cucumbers to vegetarians than they sold beef to vegetarians!
I agree on the point about the 400,000 units to america. Its vital for the press release that Sony can claim to of sold more PS3's on day one than xbox360's.

What I think is more important is that Nintendo ship at least 500,000 units to america and the equivalent numbers to japan and europe. Sony's 400,000 units sold on day one will look sh*t compared to the Wii sales of 500,000 in each territory.
I really hope nintendo have the capacity to hit the market with a lot of Wii's. Having Wii's available in shops over christmas is a good thing. And at the right price point they could become a semi impulse buy for parents who's kids want a new console this christmas.
Nintendo have the opportunity to steal this christmas, they just need the right marketing, good word of mouth and plenty of stock.
