Pretty self-explanitory really.
I'd have to go with Killer 7; there was some amazing tunes and it was always fitting. The music when fighting the crazy schoolteacher with the machine gun got my feet tapping.
Either that or Chrono Trigger, hmmm...

A tough one this, but I would say Lagoon on SNES. That game has great music from the very beginning till the very end. Also Lufia 2 on SNES has great music (Sinistral battle) and F-Zeros soundtrack is WOWEE (Big Blue, Silence). I could go on forever but those three are really special.

- Final Fantasy IV, V and VI
- Chrono Trigger
- Baten Kaitos
- Tales of Symphonia
- Soul Calibur II
- All The Zelda's - Seems the music only gets beter and I can expect to see the same in Twilight Princess.
I agree. Although the quality wasn't the best in Ocarina of Time, it's still the most memorable.

0_0 ow the choices again...
It'll always be Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symhonia and Final Fantasy 6. Not based on single tunes I like but based on the overall soundtrack. Meaning EVERYTHING. Final Fantasy 6 manages to capture the mood perfectly with its tracks.
ToS just feels energetic and somewhat...unique. Baten Kaitos' music is just 0_0 extremely great to listen to cause it has everything.
Hmm also love the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack, have great remixes on those too n_n. Also have great remixes on FF7 tracks and soon also ToS n_n

-Castlevania IV Snes (chills down the spine, played the intro from level 4 myself on our first full album...)
-Metroid Prime on Cube (fits so well with the action and mood/fauna...)
-Zelda most versions on consoles especially Oot!!

HI all, im new and 32 ( god, i feel old on this forum). Ive played many many games in my time and i cannot emphasize enough the importance music plays in adding atmosphere . I feel, if its done well, it can go a long way to deciding if the game itself sticks in your mind . For me, the music in shadowman on n64 was definetley the most atmospheric music ive heard in many games .Singularly, the boss music in the metroid prime games ,particularly QUADRAXIS, is totaly outstanding, kenji yamamoto is a genius. As ive said, im totaly new to these forums and i hope ,as an old git , to put this (nintendos for kids) shit argument to bed. c ya soon.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this: Starfox/Starwing, on the SNES.
It had a totally revolutionary soundtrack for its time, and the end theme is still unforgettable. I'd pass the whole game just to hear that music! Too bad they underused it in the later Starfox games, replacing it with a somewhat crappy tune. SSBM had glimpses of it, though.
How about zone of the enders 2 or the tenchu 1,2 and 3

I'm sorry? He just said he was 32-years-old and felt older than most on the forum. He didn't say, "I'm 32 and far better then all of you shallow little kiddies! You are all cretins and I judge this by your age!"
Tales of Symphonia's music, much like the rest of the game, simply doesn't sit well with me. It's all just so saccharine, like a beaten housewife fervently denying that there's anything wrong when there clearly is.
Whilst it is more soundscape then soundtrack, Eric Brosius's work on the Thief series (http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/music/) is highly atmospheric.

I think a lot of people who have played other RPGs in the past and present find Tales of Symphonia a little mediocre. Its a case of rose-tinting it in my case. Its sadly the first proper RPG I've played, and coupled with the excellent battle system and a lot of time spent with myself hyping it... the game was never going to be anything other than excellent in my opinion.

But other include:
-Zelda OOT and LTTP [For the dark overworld theme tune.]

-Fahrenheit did indeed have a good soundtrack. Plenty of strings used, and at the right moments.

Final fantasy boss music owns.
Also a lot of Skies Of Arcadia music is good.
Generally RPGs are the games with the good music as in RPGs players are meant to feel emotion and by playing certain types of music it can communicate the scenes emotion what the audience should be feeling thus ensuring that emotion is felt.
A rather cheap technique one might add as if the actor/game character cannot make the audience feel emotion just on their own then they're very good now are they.

Danny Elfman had a hand in that, I seem to remember it was the main theme he did.
Im gonna throw out one here for Rome: Total War. the musical score is a thing of beauty. etheral vocals over harps annd stuff on the campaign map and heart pounding war drums in the heat of battle. its perfect both aurally and thematically.
also for retro choonz of choice, Super Metroid has some of the finest atmospheric music ever put to chip. splendid.

Metroid series (yes all of them)
Zelda series (yes all of them)
Does anyone know where I can get mp3s for Shenmue?
I have the soundtrack to that game! The music rocks!
It's all in Japanese of course (a couple have a woman singing on it, and ones a extremely energetic j-pop song), but the beginning song in the game is stunning and on the soundtrack it's all a live-orchestra so it's like your in the same room with them and it's longer!

Its...its almost every video games soundtrack EVER! On top if that theres a lot of obscure and rares tracks like arranged albums and such.
I think the Super mario arranged (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/1469) album is awesome.
F-zero arranged album (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/147) is worth a listen too.

Rez, Katamari, Parappa the Rapper, Vib Ribbon (though it was custom), Um Jammer Lammy, every Gran Turismo, most SSX titles, every Grand Theft Auto, Basically every Final Fantasy (though 8 was a bit too trancey).. hmm running out of ideas now.
Oh yeah, Every WipeOut game, the Battlefield Vietnam game, Electroplankton.. Meteos and though I've not played it Jet Set Radio is pretty ghetto.
Dunno if Marc Ecko's getting up was any good? Apparently Talib Kewli was involved in that.. and I'm not sure if Tony Hawk's counts as good because it's often quite repetitive style and there's definitely some yawn factor in there.
And the Xbox deserves a mention as it lets you stream music wireless to your in game sound system.. something I appreciated very much so.
When I'm playing a good game with mates we tend to have some drum and bass on like the Propellorheads.. when I'm alone I prefer to enjoy the in game soundtrack or if at night some mellow stuff- Massive Attack, Nightmares on Wax etc..

Oh god, how did I not see this thread sooner...annyway, the best videogame music by far has to be from:
Chrono Trigger:
This game has some of the best music I've ever heard
Yearning of the Wind
and Singing Mountain,
you should definately download those two from Limewire
Chrono Cross:
"Journey To The Shores Of Another World", is absolutely beautiful, I used to enter the world map and just stand around doing nothing and just taking in the music...
Final Fantasy 7:
This game has the most consistently brilliant game music ever.
Theres even a metal band called "The black mages" dedicated to covering themes from Final Fantasy games.
You should Check out:
Cosmo Canyon
Boss Battle Theme
Normal Battle Theme
Jenova
One Winged Angel
and FF7 Main Theme from Limewire
F-Zero X: Mute City
There's a few more that I can't remember, but the one's from FF7, and the Chrono Games are the best by a long way, check em out.
I've learnt to play most of these on guitar, so once I get my recording equiptment, I'll put them up on the site...

I love these posts - anything retro or nastalgic is great with me...however what I also love is music, especially Film and Game music - I have many, many tracks from the titles below (inc remixes and reinterpretations) so here goes....
Classics
Robocop
Amstrad CPC & Speccy - Themain title screen music had nothing to do with Basil Poledouris classic score from the fim but it was a beautifull and haunting piece of music nonetheless. - Especially true as it was coded and rendered on the 8-bit platform.
Sonic2, Streets of Rage 2 & Thunderforce IV
Three of the Megadrives greatest peices of gaming music (in my opinion) - Classic.
Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3
Absolutely fantastic patriaotic, eerie and climactic orchestral music delivered by Hans Zimmers protege; Harry Gregson-Williams.
God of War
A thunderous and epic soundtrack (as it should be).
Final Fantasy X
Epic and beautifull (especially "Ending Theme" on disc 4 of the album)
Biggest letdowns
Chrono TriggerEveryone always raves about Chrono Trigger when talking about great game music - and while I appreciate its all about specific tastes - I just really couldn't enage with the tracks on any level and found them quite annoying. I must admit while having a quick listen to the tracks again prior to writing this post I keep imagining a player options screen when the Chrono Trigger tracks play especially track 4 Guardia Millenial Fair - Very dissapointed.
Zelda
While I love the games I don't think I can stand to hear that townsville music again. To me the best that Zelda music has ever been was as featured in the Twilight Princess trailer - as Zelda raises the Master Sword out of the ground and the wind is swirling around him... chills man, chills.... now thats EPIC - thats MAJESTY - - otherwise I don;t think thats the Link theme has ever been suitably rendered in as big a way as it should have been - they've all been a bit "hey-ho / so-so" for me.

Absolutely - and I have that very version of the game (as much as I'm a Ninty head (kinda) nowadays...that version was the best out there, it kicked all sorts of ass and was bloddy as hell. Sorry SNES purists but your version made Robo look FAT (see image below)
http://wiki.pocketheaven.com/images/f/f3/RVT.PNG
See I always back my claims up with evidence (where I can :) )
"We" as in SEGA Megadrive geeks (like me) had the better looking RoboCop you guys had the better Batman from Batman Returns - that was just the rules back in the good ol' days.
I remember I had my mate over for a sleep over with we were about 15/16 or something. I was attempting blast through the game and show him that the final boss (Cyberdyne) was infact a giant T800 head. (He didn't believe me you see) We both did an all nighter just to stay up and see the ending.
I remember giving a running commentary right through the game up until the end credits. I looked over at my mate and the fecker was asleep :(
.......doh!

beautifully crafted power and evocative soundtrack, coincides with your emotions of regret and sorrow.
kow otani is a genius.
final fantasy music cannot go unmentined, kneels to nobou otematsu, he to is a fantastic composer. makes music a big a part of the game as the dialogue.
red steel as much as it pains me to say had a exaggerated, but still very entertaining soundtrack.

I think the best music I've ever heard in a game is Golden Sun. For a Game Boy game, the music was amazing ... sometimes I turn it on just to listen to the file select music!
And some very honourable mentions for Streets of Rage, Sonic 2 and Super Mario World!

Ah, always nice to see some Rage lovin'. Revenge of Shinobi has a similar style by the same composer which is also excellent.
I'm currently listening to the soundtrack for the original Phoenix Wright on DS. I totally didn't expect such a good soundtrack for this game.
With regards to the Chronotrigger comments earlier, I find it really difficult to understand how anybody can't see the absolute genius behind it. I appreciate everyone has different tastes but it's like hearing someone say they dislike chocolate.
Playing Chronotrigger was one of the few gaming experiences I've had where I've put the controller down frequently for many hours to just listen to the music. After 30 hours of play, I was still tapping my feet to the combat music, which says something for an RPG.
The End of Time music is perfect in its tranquility, the despair and loss of hope is practically tangible in the Ruins and I still get shivers listening to the Zeal tune. Wow.

I'm quite surprised barely anyone has mentioned Donkey Kong Country 1& 2.
The DKC series (excluding 3) has some of the best music of any games ever released.
Particularly, from DK1 I like the Aquatic theme and the Factory themes and from DK2 I like Stickerbrush Symphony (one of my favorites) from the Bramble Blast (thorn) level and Mining Melancholy from those mining levels.
The original Rayman game also has excellent music, in particular I like the Mr Sax's boss music, and the music featured in the stone world...
My favorite musical piece from OOT funny enough is The Song of Storms played in the Windmill in the village before death mountain.

I Don't think so..
I relistened to the Chrono Trigger album again and I have to say that I'm still unimpressed overall. I like the fact that there is such a wealth of music for one game (29 released tracks!) However the track entitled:

reminds me of some wannabe Eurotrash progam on Bravo.
Robos Theme
Not bad.

That site is awesome. It's not just those games. Megaman, Final Fantasy, Zelda and Chrono Trigger all got their fair share of love (As well as many others).
The Sonic remixes are definately the best, though.
Now, for some games/series with good soundtracks:
Personal Favorites
-Donkey Kong Country series: At least the first two had excellent music. Specially the second one.
-Mega Drive Sonic series: The game with the best soundtrack is Sonic 2, but the all the games reek of quality music. I don't think there's a single music I dislike from these games.
-Classic Megaman 1-3: My favorite being, again, the second game of the series. The quality started to to deteriorate after the third one, but those first three games had good music.
Special mention: Megaman: Dr. Wily's Revenge for the Gameboy went unnoticed, but it's really well done and polished (albeit short). It (lightly) remixes the music from the Megaman 1, with better results.
Having played this version in my childhood, the music in the NES version now hurts my ears.
-Zelda OoT: Great, memorable music all around. From the ocarina melodies to the towns' music to the dungeons' creepyness. Favorite track is the Gerudo Valley.
-Zelda WW: This game has awesome, memorable music. Not only that, but the music changes according to your current situation. This happens pretty much everywhere in the game, so it really helps the atmosphere and immersion.
-Pokemon Red/Blue: This soundtrack is underrated, probably because of the Gameboy's poor sound capabilities. I'm amazed these musics don't get remixed more often. Gold/Silver had a nice soundtrack, too, although R/B is just plain better.
-Fire Emblem 6: Maybe it's because not many people played this game, but I feel this soundtrack is very underrated. I love those tracks. Specially Shaman in the Dark.
-Golden Sun 1 & 2: An excellent soundtrack all-around. The RPG series with the third best music ever.
-Final Fantasy IX: This is my favourite Final Fantasy for several reasons and music is one of them. This is probably the RPG with the second best music ever, second only to...
-Skies of Arcadia: The RPG with the best music ever. Not much else to say.
-Super Smash Bros. Melee: Because it's basically a museum with great music from several great games
Honorable mentions
-Tales series: It's hit or miss with this series, but when it hits, it nails the target.
-Fire Emblem series (except 6): It's not excellent, but has several good moments.
-Castlevania: Some games have excellent music, others don't. But the whole series deserves respect in this aspect.
-Chrono Trigger: There's nothing wrong with it, but I like Golden Sun, FF9 and Skies more.
-Baten Kaitos: See 'Chrono Trigger'.
-Megaman X: I don't really like the music of the whole series, but the first one had a few great tracks.
-Mario & Luigi RPG series: Great style and memorable tunes. Probably the Mario games with my favorite soundtrack
-F-Zero series: I love those songs and I don't even know most of the tracks from F-Zero X.
-Metroid series: Most of the tracks aren't memorable tunes, but great atmospheric sound. It's the kind of music that makes up for most of a game's atmosphere. I wouldn't be half as desperate in the Phazon Mines if it weren't for the background music.
Damn, that's a long list. Hopefully I didn't forget anything.
Absolute Classic games - Although I own these carts any way I do hope they both feature on the VC real soon - that way everone can appreciate how great these are.
I also hope for the games below to feature soon:
Road Rash Trilogy
Flashback and Another World
Ranger X
That would be class!
In the meantime I've included some shots of these two mighty games to let everyone in on these gems - that apparantly only we know about
Peace

After sitting watching some Megaman 9 footage from E3 I started listening to some of my favourite Megaman X tunes and here are a couple.
Megaman X3 Intro
UNL6fQysl08
I remember when I first bought this on the Sega Saturn, I must have watched the intro at least 3 or 4 times before I started the game as I loved the song so much. I think we got a better song than what the Japanese gamers did.
Megaman X Zero Theme
bcaoEqtKxQ0
When playing Megaman X on the SNES as a kid I always loved it when Zero came in to save the day. It wasnt just because I thought he was cool and hard as nails ( Im not keen on the character now ) but because this B.A. tune would always kick in when he arrived.

Obviously, the works of Nobuo Ouematsu in the Final Fantasies are amazing, (My personal favs being VII then IX) but I also love the tunes from Radiata Stories, most notably the cheery sounding battle music, and the various town tunes. Amazing!
Tales of Symphonia also had alot of amazing tracks, my favourites being the various themes of the Characters, (although I dislike her, Raine's theme is one of my favourites, the other being Zelos' theme :heh: ) and the Overworld theme's are awesome too! Motoi also did the Eternal Sonata tunes if I remember correctly, and I love the tunes 'Breeze the Conductor' and 'An Appealance'. I'm sure there's more, but they're the most memorable :heh: .
I must admit although the gameplay of FF:CC on the GC left much to be desired, I loved the music in it! I loved all the town music, and some of the field music was quite good too. Also, include FFT:A + FFT:A2 in here, the battle music and the menu music was awesome!
Loco Roco's music was also very cute, especially 'Bu Bu Poroche', (the theme of the Yellow Loco Rocos) and the main theme, (my favourite being sung by the Black Loco Rocos).
I loved some of the music in Dark Chronicle, probably most the 'Rainbow Butterfly Woods' and I loved the shop/menu music too. :D
Phoenix Wright, (the first one), had an AMAZING soundtrack! Well, I liked it :heh:
I loved how when everything was getting heated up, the music really made you feel it by getting all fast and such :D.
Game music rocks, :heh: !
I'd have to say the theme music for Halo 3 is awesome!! - but quite sadly I do like the Yoshi's Island music too, but I think that's just because the sound effects are sooo cute:yay: and of course Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are stuck in my mind 'cos of playin it sooo much when I was little!

I've been taking in the Jet Force Gemini soundtrack over the last few days and apart from making me clamour for the good old Rare games of old, I have to say JFG features one of THE most unique soundtracks I've ever heard.
It must be something to do with the 'natural' soundtrack mixed with the foreboding impactful space elements that makes it sound so powerful yet so natural at the same time which does it for me.
A brilliantly (underplayed by many) title which has some of the best music in a videogame.

Well, I've always loved the FFVIII soundtrack but Crisis Core has taken some of the original FFVII music to the next level. One great example is "Fulfilled Desire (http://delta.bluelaguna.net/crisis-core-ost-soundtrack/223%20Fulfilled%20Desire.mp3)" on the FFVII:CC OST - I urge everyone to try listen to this one. :D
To me, the music in past FF games is unmatched. They really took the soundtracks of the games seriously and Nobuo Uematsu was fantastic.
Majora's Mask had a few tracks that I like to this day. "Staff Roll (http://delta.bluelaguna.net/zmajoraost/253%20Staff%20Roll.mp3)" is pretty cool at some parts (jazzy sections), and the almighty Song of Healing Demo (http://delta.bluelaguna.net/zmajoraost/129%20Song%20Of%20Healing%20Demo.mp3) (the sheer nostalgia dripping from this song reminds me of the Christmas years ago when I was first playing this game).
Chrono Trigger has an epic soundtrack. Frog's theme, Corridors of Time, Magus's Theme (forgot the name), Robo's Theme, Crono's Theme, plus a hell of a lot more.
A great Corridors of Time remix (http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/media/music/Chrono%20Trigger%20Resurrection%20-%20Corridors%20of%20Time.mp3) was done by the CT Resurrection team, shortly before they were forced to stop. :/

The first two Prime games had some awesomely atmospheric music. The way the soundtrack seamlessly blended with Talon IV was the closest thing I'd ever gotten to true escapism in a video game. Then you just couldn't help crapping your pants every time you walked into a room, everything went dark and you hear that ear-piercing screech of the Chozo Ghosts.
But I always remembered the music that played when you fought Metroid Prime Core. They used it for the Echoes trailers as well - never failed to send shivers down my spine:

Ocarina Of Time - that valley one. I forget the name but its the place where you escape prison and do the horseback archery etc. Great music.
I also love all Rare game music, particularly Banjo but Perfect Dark also has some rocking tunes.

Starfox assault wasnt the best game but I think it has a very good soundtrack. Even if most the tracks are simply orchestral versions of Starfox 64's music, for example Star Wolfs theme:

Jet Set Radio gets my vote. It's the only soundtrack I've ever bought.
Other notable ones for me:
Shenmue
F-Zero
Sonic Adventure (Ok, I just liked the intro music)
Virtual On
Rock'n'Roll Racing (Midi rock is awesome)
Outrun

Super Soccer on the SNES.. first game me and my brother ever owned :heh:
We were playing it at the weekend there and it is still amazingly fun to play.. and the music was fantastic! Each team had their own track which played during half of the match.. so many great memories
The next couple of videos take you through the music for 'all' 16 teams (there is a hidden team :yay:)
Part One (including Intro Music)
SjHHrxZks4Y
Part Two
9XirWey8nkk
Nintendo Team
21_wyFelpS4
Well worth a listen :yay:
The penalty shootouts in Super Soccer are the best I have ever played in a football game too.. not bad for 1992 :heh:

It's also worth watching the following video to see the Intro and the music during the selection screens

I would love a DS sequel! You could set your goalkeeper to Automatic or Manual.. but Manual was by far the best way to play- it really was amazing, especially when you pull off some fantastic saves : peace:

The entire Dragon Quest VIII soundtrack is stunningly beautiful, but I find "Over the Sorrow" in particular more moving than I can explain:
