I picked it up the day it came out and I played it as soon as I got home. Immediatly I was baffled by the amount of options the game has. But what was annoying was that I'd never played ADW before and it was all very confusing. So far some battles in the Campaign have been alright but I often find myself bored and frustrated. Now I just play it for the sake of playing it I dont really enjoy it. My favourite thing about it is the sound (its really good) but thats it it. Should I have more patience? Is this common in first time players?Should I take it back? What game should I get instead? I would apreciate any advice right now :weep:

You should have more patience, I've played the previous AW games, so it was easy to adapt to this game for me, but my fiancé has not played any AW game before. She did enjoy it, after she had played around with the map editor, learned a bit in campaign mode and asked me for advice. Now she likes it. But if turn based games are not your thing anyway, maybe patience won't help.

Yeah, it requires patience to get use to it and get the jist of whats going on, but once I got dived in I got addicted.

It's not really the type of game that you can just pick up and play if you havent played the previous games or turn based strategy games before. I've never played the other games but I have played the Civ games on PC and the combat is similar. I'm enjoying AW so far.

Ive never had the patience for strategy games like this; I used to play Crystal Warriors on the GameGear when I was younger and liked that then, but nowadays they really arent something I enjoy. The only one that has broken the trend is FF Tactics, which I stuck with longer than usualy because of my love for Square :)

Did you get it from Game? Play it for the 10 days youre allowed and see if your opinion changes. It may take getting used to; or it may be a genre of game that just doesnt suit you.

I hevent tried the DS version yet but what Stocka said about patience applies to the GBA versions I played. You just got to give it time and learn the various moves eventually you will see it in all its glory. Word of warning if though if the DS play the same as the GBA it gets pretty intense on the later missions....ENJOY!

I have and love it. But then again, I had AW1 one for a while... AW1 had a tutorial. The first few campaign in AWDS are supposed to be a tutorial for the game, but they don't quite cut it. If you play it for a week you'll probably get the hang of it though.

ive got it and ive never played 1 or 2 before and i love it. what makes it fun is that itll take half an hour to finish one level, or thats just me but its awesome

Like chess this game is basic in it's principles, but complex in it's mastering. All you really do on-screen, or in-game, is moving some sprited graphs of army men or vehicules to other places and choose either they should wait or open fire, a selection wich is soon followed by a small cartoon of your men attacking or getting attacked, or nothing at all. It is always exactly the same. So you can deploy troops, capture buildings, and god knows wat other war-driven actions to succeed your campaigns. All seems basic, repetitive and boring.
However, like chess, this game is not played on-screen, but in the mind. Challenge comes from complex strategical puzzles that need solving to conquer your enemy. And it is in the deep variation of possible stratagem, and in the fine nuance of consequenses, that this game excells. The margin for error, however, isn't nearly small enough for the game to compete with a chessboard in terms of mathematical precision; it is a simple computergame, and not The game of Kings itself. Nonetheless, it profoundly manages to atract people to use their minds equally as they do their thumbs in a industry that is user-based on visual consumption rather than intelligent development - development of skills, perhaps even of the mind? A worthy quality, and in sharp contrast with the game's anime-based visuals. I like.

I only played one turn based strategy game before - Battle Isle - and that only for one hour and I must say I have no problems with AWDS so far (Mission 10). I actually was pretty content with the tutorial and thought it was helpful enough.

I got 2 for the GBA....it was fun until fog of war (or whatever its called) came into play. Made things to hard, I just prefered the fun, easy challenges of the first few levels. Oh well.

Lol, it's good to know I'm not the only one. On the other hand, all my friends spent hours playing on Advance Wars.

It got it emulated on PC and thought it was amazing!

It's really tempting to pick up a GBA Micro and this game when it comes out.

The GBA versions are easier to get to grips with - it introduces options and units a lot slower, especially on the original. AW:DS has a tutorial mode, true, but it's more of a refresher course than a newbie thing. I noticed it dropped you in pretty deep pretty early. Still, I'm onto mission 12 and haven't lost one yet, so I'm enjoying it. I like the Tag powers, going twice in a row really lets you ram it into the enemies' faces.

Fog of War is better on VS. matches

ADVANCE WARS RULES!!!

Maybe you should try Battalion Wars if Advance Wars isn't your thing (If you have a Cube) It's fast paced 3rd person strategy.

I've only got Advance Wars on the GBA. I hated it when I first got it but then I started to get into it and started to enjoy it alot more. It is really great when your plan starts to work and you can sense victory. But it's not really a game that can hold my attention for a long time and I soon grew board of it again. I am not a fan stratgey games so that probably has someting to do with it.

Yeah I hated Fog of War too. One of the reasons I stopped playing.

I managed to get through fog of war on the red and blue place, but not the yellow place.
