Just got this game today and played for about an hour or so before my DS ran out of juice, so I thought I'd come and start an AW DS thread.

Loving the game but unfortunately for people who've played the previous Advance Wars the DS version is still heavy on the tutorial stages (so I have to learn about the units for a third time!) but I guess it's a necessity for new players so I won't hold that against it. The presentation is very slick though and using the stylus in map design mode is great. I'm sure there is a lot of game play waiting ahead of me in this one too so I'm looking forward to progressing in the campaign mode.

I know a lot of people imported but did anyone else get the Euro version today?

Yeah just got it myself today as well. Not had a go on it yet, but I've heard great things and since I liked the past versions, I can't see myself not liking it.

I can't decide on this game. I've never played Advance Wars properly, and I know it's amazing but I can't decide if it pushes the DS enough for me to want it. I hate to admit it but it's probably the graphics that has put me off. I know, if I were reading this I'd jump down my own throat for being so stupid, but the reason is because it doesn't seem to use any of the DS's unique abilities. No proper use for the touch screen, no proper need for the extra screen, it doesn't use the extra power. The only real biggie is the multiplayer, but with Mario Kart just round the corner I can't bring myself to want Advance Wars.

Actually I blame the reviews. I was really disappointed that the touch screen navigation isn't very accurate, that's something I was looking forward to.

Am I talking absolute nonsense?

I don't think the touch control is that bad, but at the end of the day the game is still played on a grid so it's not going to benefit from touch control too much apart from the extra speed it provides and for a turn based game that’s not exactly essential.

As far as the visuals are concerned well, yeah they are pretty much lifted straight out of the GBA versions. But they're not bad by any stretch of the imagination, it’s all about the game play with Advance Wars and having better visuals would probably just detract from that so I'm glad it still looks the way it does.

Also I couldn’t tell from your post if you meant you could only get Advance Wars or Mario Kart, but if that is the case I'd highly recommend you wait for the latter as no matter how good this game is it's clearly going to be no match for Online Mario Kart! :hehe:

*listens to Jake's Theme MP3*Hey Stocka, have you finished the game yet, if so how long did it take you roughly?

I like Rachel’s music the most so far and the tune on the main menu is pretty good too.

But speaking of Jake, well he has got to be contender for the most annoying game character ever! His dialogue is so stupid, every two seconds it's "Sup?" "Word" "Owned" "Dude"

Lol, he's annoying, but has kick ass music.
Anyway, I haven't completed campaign yet, but nearly have. I'm on mission 22 and theres 28 I believe. Once you compelte it you can go through it in 'hard' mode too which adds the massive lifespan of the game. This is just campaign, all those modes! There's so much it lasts for ages, and the multiplayer is fantastic. I haven't even tried map making yet because i've been so busy :heh:

By the way, if you ever get a mission and they say something about a map, try to find it in a city! If you do, you'll find a secret mission, like I did last night.

I know everyone's saying that this is the best thing on the DS so far, but it just doesn't appeal to me, for some reason. I guess I'm just not a war games kind of person. Oh well, at least not getting means I'll have more time to play Nintendogs when it comes out. :)

I was set on buying this game, and i wanted to see if i could play with my brother with single cart multi, sure enough, the back of the box said single card play. I payed the register and walked out of the store.

to my dissapointment, all I got in multi was a pellet shooting game... pretty fun, but only for the first few games, then it got boring. The game is amazing however in single player, lots of levels. The music and animation is superb.

I also got mine this morning from Gamplay.co.uk and even though I'm only on mission 5 I have to say that I am enjoying it so far. I just find it annoying that it is teaching me everything again (but like someone else said, its a must) plus I can always skip it by pressing start. Anyway, I'm enjoying it so far, I like the little touches they have made (no pun intended). Such as the way the camera zooms in at the start of the battle plus the music is a lot louder which I like.:)

Can't wait, I shall also be getting Castlevania tomorrow morning. ^_^

I'm up to mission 11 in campaign mode and I found one of the maps in a city on mission 10. Decided to leave it there before starting 11 otherwise I'm sure I would have played it all night!

I totally forgot about the un-lockables for having GBA versions in the DS too, so I tried it and unlocked some goodies!

One thing I'm a bit pissed off with though is you can still only save 3 maps, what's up with that!? I was sure they would have increased this on the DS, oh well.

20hours, 23 minutes. And thats coming from someone who hasn't completed normal campaign yet, survival, unlocked loads or even made a map yet, yet alone done much multiplayer. This game has so much depth I love it.

Picked the game up some few hours ago, had the strangest compulsion to buy a handy protective DS-bag - official Nintendo product, I thank you -, earned a good lovin' parking ticket valued at 15 Euro's or so, cursed my bollocks of and drove back home with my golden purchase.
I have been playing it ever since.

That's not true!

There are ALOT of multiplayer options. Not just 'Combat' mode. 'Combat' is a great mini-game to play but the main game is what it's all about.

I'm on Mission 10 and even though am just getting to grips with the whole dual strike thing I am sooo loving it so far, really worth a DS for this game (as GAME rightfully said). I just hope that it doesn't get tooo hard, because just like Black Hole Rising it got too hard and put me off.

Advance Wars 1 was great, it wasn't tooo hard and not too easy. It was a great challenge that didn't make me cry. :P

I've only just done mission 9 and already my head hurts. I can see this getting really, really, really hard. The worst thing is the stalemate position where both sides stay in roughly the same situation for an hour or more, both sides building units at the same speed they are destroyed, as you look for a weak spot that won't expose one of your own. I've had battles rage on for well over 5 hours on the previous AW games.

Got this game yesterday and i'm absolutely loving it so far. Been playing it for hours and haven't even started the game properly yet.
I can't believe at 2pm in Hull, I was the first person to have picked it up. The guy in game said he'd been waiting all day for someone to buy a copy. I think everyone was after Castlevania though as that was sold out :( Think I'd much rather have this though, it's awesome. Touch screen control in general is pretty great, although it's a bit annoying when you make a unit wait instead of move by tapping the touch screen twice by mistake.
If you have a DS, go buy this game now!
Oh, and while you're there, go pre-order Nintendogs too! ^_^

I think I must have missed one of the secret missions, I finished the campaign on Thursday (US import), but I'd only done 27 missions. My first attempt at Turn Survival took me 78 turns, which I thought was pretty good. The Hard Campaign setting is pretty good for racking up points to spend in the Map Room, just play through the first 3 missions several times and you quickly build up a few thousand to buy extras with.

Oh, Dyson, MikeMania was talking about the single-card multiplayer modes, the only option available is "Combat".

It just took me over an hour to complete Mission 8 (First enemy dual strike mission), and I only ended up with a C grade.

The game seems to be selling pretty well(over the net at least) with it being the best selling DS game at Play,Gameplay and Amazon. Also, in the top 20 multiformat chart at Gameplay, it is no.4! Castlevania is 6th aswell, lets hope at least 1 of them gets into the top 40 all format for this week in UK.

I'm just about to start mission 19 and it's definitely starting to pick up in terms of difficulty now which is good. The last mission with the Stealth fighters was great!

I've had a complete change of opinion on the controls for this game though and have reverted to using buttons over the stylus, (even in map maker mode) as it's much more precise. Plus it's nice to be able to play a game on the DS without the stylus for once.

I'm on the Drake mission!! It's HARD!!!

The fog of war one? I found it pretty easy.

The red team was the decoy team, and drew the ship fire. The blue team snuck in, destroyed the rockets and captured the base and airport, from there it was just a simple case of covering them with red-team infantry as cannon fodder for Black Hole.

I used Sami as my main Red Moon CO, backed up by Rachel for her Super Power. On the blue team, I had Max for the power, and Colin for unit creation and funds. By the time I captured the base I had well over 70,000 saved up and ended up with three bombers and 3 Megatanks. It got pretty easy then :-p

OK, for starters you've missed a mission; in Mission 10 you had to capture a particular building to find a map that reveals the location of the Black Boat lab. Certain missions later on will be a lot, lot harder without being able to build them.

As to "Lightning Strikes", the key is to getting your blue infantry units on top of the mountains so they can reveal more of what's covered by the fog of war. Once you have done this use your ranged units to target enemy ranged units and the lone Mega-Tank, destroying the Mega-Tank makes it easier for your red units to stand against the enemy when they break through at the top end of the map.

One thing to make things easier, the top left most blue infantry unit, move it left and take over the Comm Tower asap; it will make your ranged units more powerful and reduce the strength of the enemy units.

Currently running at 60+ hours on my US copy of AW:DS.

you can also just use the other save files to start new campaigns - CO experience racks up, so you can get the special rank skills quite quickly. save it in slot 2 before a really easy Max/Rachel/Jake mission, do the mission, get the EXP, save in slot 3 afterwards, then quit and reload slot 2. Repeat until your rank is at its highest, then move on until you get to your next character.

I'm on mission 21, the one with the 9 missle silos any tips?

Just make sure you get all the silos. After that just hold back and build up an army. Use the green army to kill the big cannon early on so you can get those 3 silos and then move troops down easily. Get heli's to control that area then go for a couple of bombers to kill the big thing in the centre.

I'm still keeping up my record of doing each mission with only 2 attempts (I did the 2nd Oozium one on my first attempt). I hate that stuff, I didn't realise it would be able to kill planes too, so I put a stealth fighter next to it when I first met it and it killed it!

My copy finally arrived. It's hard to imagine how Intelligent Systems brings the AW gameplay to new heights. I'm totally hooked again! I'm om mission 17 now, haven't spent too much time on other modes yet, but Survival seems very cool :)

I played for like 2 hours today. It didn't get boring.

I got bored of that after about 2 minutes. There's not really any skill in it at all. Multi-kart is good though :)

I thought it was really fun. But part of the 2 hours was also spent playing Super Mario 64 multiplayer.

I've played a very brief session of single-card multiplayer. That was the first time I saw combat mode in action. I was shocked. No fun at all. But then again, I tried it in single player later and it was actually decent fun. Nowhere near as the real AW, but still OK-ish.

I might give multiplayer combat some more tries later. As for multi-card play, I'm anxious to try it! A friend of mine has a copy and another is seriously considering this game. Hopefully I can test my skills soon. :D

Well, I suppose when you haven't played the single player its okay.

Did anyone realize they've downgraded Max' CO powers? In AW2 Max used to get a movement increasement besides the firepower increasment. I guess he was just too strong?

Personally this is a low point for the AW series. DS is too easy even on Hard Mode!

Grr, mission 25 is way too hard. I nearly had it but ran out of days while wiping out the main force.

Thats not too hard, just send plenty of anit air units to the top and make sure you beat the top one, and use Sensei for the main screen! Cause withy his super power you'll get tons of Mechs. Try to get the Airport too.

I found the best technique for it was to use Gritt on the main front. He's got much father range and power for the Rockets and Artillery. For the second front I hung back and let them come to me then destroyed them fairly quickly. The Neotank is annoying but it's weak against battle copters.

Anyone got any tips for Mission 12 - Lightning Strikes, because I need a good strategy to take out the bottom screen's army.

I keep getting beat :(

I'm onto the hard campaign now. I'm still loving this game and I've just got AW2 as well so am playing both. I've played over 35 hours on AW DS now!

I always ran out of days on that. I found it the 2nd hardest Level.

If you're having trouble because the BH CO's keep using Tags, use Sasha and spam Market Crash so they never have the chance.
If you're stuck in HC just S Rank NC, buy Nell and Hachi and go broken on them!

I just finished the normal campaign yesterday. The final mission was awesome! I used Sasha on my main front and Jess on the second. Shame it was possible get in control of the second battlefield. But oh man, fighting Von Bolt as Sasha was great!

Her Market Crash really is very strategic move. Everytime his bar was full or almost full, I forced it to crash back to zero, so really, that mission was a piece of cake.

Anybody bought AW2 wallpaper when you inserted AW2 in the GBA slot? I bought it before I unlocked the gallery, but having done that now, I don't see anything special... Is it gone?

I completed this a few days ago and it's definitely a lot easier than the previous AW games, although one fog of war mission late on (can't remember which now) gave me a shit load of trouble not to mention a lot of defeats!

The last mission was a joke though, sooooo easy!
Even so I still ended up with an overall A Rank for the campaign, I guess I'll be playing through it again for the S Rank. Not to mention Hard Campaign!
One thing that really surprised me was the music on the credits (http://www.advancewarsnet.com/downloads/awdsmusic/67%20-%20That%27s%20a%20Wrap!.mp3), such a fantastic tune and really high quality audio! Made me unlock the sound room before anything else.

Well I am pretty happy that it is not as hard as past Advance Wars games. It was the difficulty in one fog of war battle that put me off playing Advance Wars 2 and I was kinda worried the same will happen again but am glad that it shouldn't.

Anyway, can anyone tell me how many missions there are in Dual Strike?

can anyone tell me how many missions there are in Dual Strike28, but it can be less if you don't meet certain requirements during the campaign.
