Looks very nice indeed. Will it help shift 360 machines in Japan? Probably not but aslong as it gets a uk release or they make the game multi-regional then I will be happy.

IGN:
June 21, 2006 - On October 17, 1948, Frederic Chopin, one of the most influential composers for the piano, succumbed to sickness and died at the young age of 39.

Three hours prior to that, in the world according to Bandai Namco, Chopin, crouched on the floor of his hospital, saw a dream. The dream had anime characters that looked like they were out of a Tales game and a world that looked like it was pulled from a fairy tale. In the dream, people carried about their lives like in the real world. But in the dream world, people with incurable sicknesses had magical powers.

Bandai Namco's new Xbox 360 RPG, Trusty Bell: Chopin's Dream ("Chopin no Yume" for the Japanese version) takes place in this dream world. Chopin (yes, the composer) comes into contact with Polka, a young girl who resides with her mother in the village of Tenuto (the names, you'll find, are all musical terms). Polka is near her death, meaning she's got some crazy powers. Unfortunately, people believe that by touching her, they'll be infected with her koodies, so Polka's not particularly popular.

Trusty Bell is the story of Chopin (yes, the composer), Polka, and a Allegretto, a 16-year-old who steals to eat and lives for only one thing: to help Polka.

If Trusty Bell were called Tales of Something-or-other, no one would complain. The game has the absurd premise, peculiar names and colorful artwork of Namco's biggest RPG series. Plus, musical composition is being handled by Motoi Sakuraba, of Tales of fame.

Trusty Bell will also feature a battle system that's heavy on the action. Details are scarce, but based on the screenshots currently circling exclusively in Japan's Famitsu magazine, the battle system supports three characters (including an unknown male character called Beat) and features some sort of combo system. Allegretto makes use of a sword as his primary weapon while Polka, being a cheery girl character and all, resorts to an umbrella.

Music and story look like they will play a big part in Trusty Bell. Bandai Namco has drafted famous Japanese actor Leo Morimoto to perform narration for the game's Japanese version. Performing the piano numbers that Chopin left to the world (before having his RPG dream) will be Russian pianist Stanislav Bunin.

Trusty Bell is in development at tri-Crescendo, a studio that worked on the sound components of tri-Ace titles like Radiata Stories, Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile and also worked on programming, sound and the battle system for Baten Kaitos, along side Monolith Soft . The game is currently without a final release date in Japan.

Music and story is what makes RPGs so special to me, it really sounds like they are trying to make the music as awesome as possible, awesome.

I can't understand why Japanese developers are still making games for the 360. The thing has flopped in Japan (practically) which is where most Japanese games (like this) are targeted. I'm not complaining, it means I won't have to buy a PS3 for it, but i'm just saying it baffles me.

These kind of games do sell decent in the rest of the world too. Look at Tales of Symphonia for example. +Microsoft may be very nice to them...

Am I the only one who thinks that for a console that is next-gen the graphics should look better compared to GCN graphics then they do? It's nice an all but as someone said, it looks a bit FF:CC+.

But hey, some RPG love can't be bad for the 360. Wish I could say the same for s certain little system:indeed:

Well yes, but it's easy to forget that certain RPGs this gen look absolutely beautiful, and can't be improved too much upon e.g. Baten Kaitos backgrounds. Once we see this in motion I think it'll look all the more beautiful too, the water is going to be lovely if its like that in Blue Dragon

Either this is:
a) Some very nice and colorful renders / fmv

b) incredibly colorful and nice in-game screenshoots / in game graphics renders.

The style and colors make this much more impressive than Gears of War for me. One of the best looking xbox360 games so far.

This gen MS have obviously realised that they have to plug the major gaps in their reportoire - namely the RPGs, Life Sims and so on. The "niche" stuff, which actually makes up a massive part of the market these days. This realisation + a lot of money = plenty of games you wouldnt have thought would ever appear on a Microsoft machine. They still have the potential to win over Japan - after all, theyre still the only competitors in the market at the moment, and will be cheaper than the PS3 at launch - and so are pulling out all the guns. Its all good.

It looks absolutely beautiful, and actually has a really interesting concept (I was beginning to lose a little hope for the genre). I hope they rethink the title for western release.

From what i've seen it is similar to ToS, however whereas ToS only let you move from left to right, you can move anywhere in this (like in FFXII where you are free to move around).

Depends how it is. I wonder if they will both have dual language when coming over in English? Certainly space on a blu-ray anyway, so no excuse about space there (like the Blue Dragon Europe bollocks!!)

Indeed. Wasn't this touted as something akin to the next Blue Dragon for Micrsoft in Japan e.g. something that sells systems. I bet Microsoft will be irked, but exclusives are annoying ideas anyway - the less of them we have is better news for gamers, I'm glad it's gone to PS3.

I suppose i'm the only one who loves exclusives then. To be honest, I dislike the whole concept of multiplatform games so much that i'd prefer it if every game on each console was exclusive.

Why?

What difference does it make to you if the PS3 has Eternal Sonata on it? You're still going to get to play the game - and playing games is what it's all about right?

Exclusives make consoles unique, that's why I like them. You can identify a console by what games it has exclusive, which is important.

Though surely you like consoles because of the games on them. Right? So surely it's better for you as the consumer to get one console and get to play the majority of games that are out on that system.

Why would you want exclusives that force you to buy another console just for the sake of a couple of games that otherwise could potentially be ported over to another system? I think I'd much rather keep £425/£280 and spend that money on games that have lost their exclusivity and have come over to the system. Wouldn't you?

The majority that disagree I find are the fanboys who's main weapon is the exclusive in the "na na na na, my consoles better than yours" as seen by the pathetic petition that went up regarding DMC4 exclusivity.

The thing is, i'm not going to say that you're wrong. The problem is that you're talking about the consumer, and why multiplatform games are benficial to the consumer, which is agreeable. However i'm talking about game consoles in general and what I personally like to see.

I do see what Stocka is saying. And, I'm pretty much inclined to agree with him. If a console doesn't have it's own set of exclusives, then it loses a valuable reason to buy that specific console. Then, it would be purely on the machine itself, and with two out of the three machines being driven towards a HD, high performance and highly graphical world, surely there would be little between the systems if there were no exclusives.

It is kinda special for the people who may only own one console. If you forked out to buy a PS3, only to find the one game you wanted is now going to be on another system in the future (a cheaper system), you'd probably be a little pissed off.

Would Nintendo games lose their special feeling if they were on other systems? My answer: Ask Sega.

But yeah, if each system should be judged on their games, which they should be, then exclusives are important.

But isn't that what you would want?
Little difference between the PS3 and the 360?
And what you say about the person wanting one console, yes I suppose exclusives are special for those with one console, but I'd bet my bottom dollar they'd swap "their" exclusives, for the exclusives available on the other console. I think, although unrealistic, the ultimate want for gamers is a behemoth of a machine that could be something like a PS360 which would incorporate Sony games, hardware reliability, blue-ray and also include Microsofts games, online service, etc

What you say about Nintendo is true, which is why they were so clever in a way with the Wii because come next year, the ports will have died out and every Wii game will be an exclusive game due to the radical difference between the Wii and the competition. As we've seen the whole Wii60 thing, the Wii is the second console, and if I buy a 360, I sure as hell would like to see Final Fantasy XIII/Metal Gear Solid 4 on it as that way I wouldn't have to buy a PS3. Don't people feel the same?

I know what you're saying, but I'm kinda like Stocka, if a game is exclusive it's like a reason why your console is special. For me the reason for getting a PS2 was Ratchet and Clank, Okami, Shadow of the Colossus. Exclusive games just seem a bit more.. I dunno, it's hard to explain.

Hero-of-Time

I have to jump in bed with Stocka, Flinky and Guy on this one ( saucy ).

I have to say I was thinking about this the other week when looking at the release list for the PS3 and the 360. Just about all the titles on these lists were multiplatform and it was kind of upsetting. I personally think that we are going to see a mass decline in exclusive titles from 3rd parties due to development costs and this in turn IMO will cause the console itself to lose its individuality. This is a main reason why I have always loved and supported Nintendo because you can only get Nintendo games on their machine which makes them unique.

Looking at the PS3 in the future the console doesnt really have much to offer in terms of exclusive games which will hurt Sony. Why spend money on a more expensive games machine ( PS3 ) when you can get practically the same machine ( 360 ) with the same games?

From a business stand point it doesnt make perfect sense to release a game on multiple platforms and im sure many gamers are happy with this, personally I would like consoles to keep their exclusive games which as I have said give them their own image.

End not very well thought out rant.

|Laguna|
24-04-2007, 08:24 PM
Who gives two figs about console image? Do you really care that deeply that you would rather sacrifice such games as Final Fantasy XIII or Metal Gear coming to an 360, because of the console's image or vice versa. I really think people get too involved with this whole industry thing, developing an attachment to the company itself, and disliking other companys just because they are competitors to the company they like. This is evident through the big Sony hatred that pours out of the Internet, or the ridiculous notion that people were going to boycott Capcom because they released DMC4 on 360 - God, does that really matter that much to people? Can't they just get on and enjoy the game themselves instead of looking over their shoulder and complaining that other gamers are playing their game?

Does console individuality matter though? What I'm getting at that at the end, when you put the disc and start playing the game, does it matter what system it is being played on - so what if it is or isn't a third party exlcusive.

I see the angle from which it is nice to have a game for your console as it feels like your privileged and such to have that console, but when you start playing the game all that other stuff goes out the window.

If I had played Wind Waker on an Xbox, sure it would have been weird buying a Zelda game in an Xbox game case, and putting it into the Xbox and such. But I'd know as soon as I would start playing the game, it would've still made me rub my belly in delight. Can people seriously argue that a game of the same quality and content on another system would cause them to have a lesser experience?

I think it's just a mind set people have about exclusives, that dominates in the hype and such during the build up to the game's release. It's a way of them making themselves feel good about themselves and that console they own.

I think the future of the exclusive should be the timed exclusive, a much fairer way on both the console maker, the console owners who like their exclusives, and the game developers. Don't you think?

So basically Laguna, you'd rather there was just one console that every game was on rather than three competitors? Because your argument is basically saying that you're happy to see every game multiplatform, which rules out any need for there to be more than one console.

So basically Laguna, you'd rather there was just one console that every game was on rather than three competitors? Because your argument is basically saying that you're happy to see every game multiplatform, which rules out any need for there to be more than one console.

You make it seem in your post that you’re sneering your nose up at the idea of just one console – and yes, while I can see the whole “there’s no competition so the standards don’t need to be kept high as that console is the only option” – but if say game standards remained, and lets imagine that one was to amalgamate the PS3 and the 360 (for-ged-about the Wii, as that is an entirely different console, ethos and games wise), why do you treat the idea of one super console with distain?

Just think of the N64 and the Sony saga . It could have transpired that the N64 would've basically been the Playstation as well with its incorporation of the CD device, making surely a perfect console of the times. A system which had the best Nintendo first party games, but also appealed to lots of devs with the cheap CD system to develop third party games for it - of course things could have gone down another route via the games made and such, but just pause and think, wouldn't that have been the ultimate? An N64 and a Playstation in one with games on the one system?

When I buy a 360 so to play Gears, Halo etc, and then FFXIII is released a year or two later, exclusive to the PS3 next gen, I will very begrudgingly buy a PS3 to play the game. Why wouldn't anyone be against 1 console in which you could play both your Halos AND you could play your Final Fantasys/Metal Gears? I betcha loads and loads of 360 owners lit up a celebratory cigar when it was revealed that GTA IV was going multi-platform - how can it viewed that this is bad thing? The way I see it, people seem to relish it when "they" steal another console's exclusive, like DMC4, but when one of "their" games, like Eternal Sonata (back on topic ;P) goes over to their competitor, they bitch and whine about it.

Stocka
24-04-2007, 09:28 PM
I never said I was against one console, I didn't meant to come across that way. I was posing the question, as I wanted to know whether that is what you would want. I think I would infact prefer for there to be just one console, but because there isn't and there are three, I like to think that there's games on each ones that make them unique, as otherwise I see no point in them all existing.

I've started it and it seems alright. The world art seems alot better than Blue Dragon but it doesn't seem as sharp in Eternal Sonata and I really want to be able to move the camera so I can see where I'm going and so I can look more closely at the graphics.

The battle system is quite fun although it's very simplistic and easy because you have no magic points you can use magic and special moves unlimited times and the dialogue seems to drag on alot which is a tad annoying but the storyline seems very unique if not epic. It's also very linear but quite well designed I'll see if it gets tiring later and the music gives me the Baten Kaitos vibes.

As is Sun Slash, and sky Divider...this game rocks.

Don't know if i like the voice over in English of Japanese. I've just had the first few hours or so in Japanese and changing to English is seems so ..american.

I've enjoyed it so far but the dialogue and storyline is the worst I've ever read of all the RPG's I've played.
The Graphics are very good maybe not great because it's not quite that sharp but the art work is stunning and so is the music, it's alot like Baten Kaitos in those departments.

The Battle system is fun but can get a tad repetitive because it's not very deep and the game is very linear, sometimes it's tolerable sometimes it's not.
Overall I think it's worth playing but it's not as well developed as Blue Dragon. Mistwalker did a better job with that than Tri-Crescendo did with Eternal Sonata.

Just gotten through Fort Fermata.
I used a guide to just guide me until the boss there, now I'm playing it through without a guide until I get really stuck.

Kinda lucky I read the guide though. I've now figured I'm going to have to replay the game. You can only get some items or something on the 'encore' so it's a 2 play through game. You can get score pieces you missed aswell...(missed the first one...:/)

First time through I'm doing it without a guide, like I said. It's sooo (excessive use of the o that's how good it is) good.
Visually, it's one of the best looking games of the year and I don't tire of saying that.
Storywise I think it's pretty solid.
Beat just got smacked across the head before, I felt proper pissed.

I just go to Chapter 4 anyway and I'm loving every minute. Adam mate, just put it in an play through it without a guide, then when you finish it there's an encore mode where the enemies are harder and where (I read) there are items and score pieces you can ony get on the second play through.
I'm just up to 10 hours now I think, and I've heard it's a 20/25 hour game, but being deadly serious, at least half of those 5 hours have been amazing looking cutscenes.
Just play it and be amazed.

I really want to but I know CoD4 will pull me away from it and then after that there is an onslaught of Wii titles. The reason why I LOVED playing Blue Dragon was because I was focused on that and had no other games distracting me, I want that when playing this aswell. Im of work in a couple of weeks for a week so I will probably play through it then.

Finished this in the early hours of the this morning, completed the Mysterious Unison side dungeon as well. Was left rather speechless by the ending, simply because I didn't know what the hell was going on!?

Seriously if anyone else who has completed this game can explain the end then I would greatly appreciate it, because I though the rest of the game was fantastic!

I finally gave this a go today but it didnt end well. I put it on and...well...just what the hell is up with that cutscene at the start? Its on for like 15 freaking mins and its not interesting at all! Im not usually bothered about cutscenes as I love the MGS series but this was just too much. Probably because I was on 6-2 and have been up since 5, knocked it off just after the cutscene finished as it crushed my will to live. Looked nice though :heh:

Having finished my latest batch of point whoring games and waiting for some new ones to show up I decided to try and play this again and I finally have gotten into it.

Just nearing the end of the 1st chapter now and im finding it highly enjoyable. I still prefer the standard turn-based moves on RPGs though.

One thing that I do detest is the history lesson you get with various cutscenes about Chopins career. I couldnt care or less about who the love of his life was, just let me get back to killing things.

Stefkov

I actually love the whole story telling. The history of Chopin etc. It's why the game was made after all.
I was reading an interview and it said, most of the Japanese people had heard of Chopin but couldn't put a tune to his name.
Now the second part I'd understand but I'd never heard of Chopin until now.

I got into the Mysterious Unison, and got killed by some mightily strong pirate looking people. So I gave up ad gonna go at it another time. The mysterious Unison is pretty big after going through 2 rooms. It's gona take a while and I'll play when I feel like it.

Big bumpage :)

I have once again started to play this over the past week and although I still hate the story and cutscenes I am enjoying the gameplay.

There is some pirate woman called Dolce ( sp? ) which always gives me a beating. I have defeated her a few times but she always ends up killing at least 1 of my team mates. Its weird because I nail all of the boss fights at the end of the chapters but this bitch is really giving me a hard time.

I have just started chapter 6 now, hopefully I wont run into her again.

Stefkov

I never really had a problem with Dolce. If you're using Beat then there's your problem.
Dolce drops items that are necessary for one achievement, but that achievement is only gettable in your second playthrough. So if you plan to get all the achievements then you're gonna have to get used to fighting her. I think you fight her 3 times, one on the ship, one underground after looking at a flower and the third I forget.
You make me want to carry on my second playthrough.

DO IT, STEF!

Yeah I fought her on the ship, looking at the flower in the Wah Lava Cave and in a pub as she was blocking a Score Piece, not sure if I have fought her anymore.

The team I use is Retto, Viola and Falsetto but I was forced to use Frederic at one point as Falsetto had sodded off somewhere.

Ya those are the only 3 times you fight her if I remember rightly.
That team is the best, stick with it. Especially if you do the Mysterious Unison. The other characters level up if you never use them so it's alright to leave em be.
It's great, Retto is just get in there and fight like Falsetto, then if you want you can keep Viola back to heal and use long range weapons even though she is also a beast in CQC.
Falsetto though, she uses her fists and she's more powerful than Beat's most powerful gun that I have for him. Is crrrrazy.

I really started to hate this game when I was about halfway through the first time, I realised the game wasn't exactly what I hoped for. But I started the game again a month ago and played it through and even got all the achievements.
For an RPG the story sucks and the characters are boring, they don't have even any backround story... but the gameplay was much more funnier on the second playthrough and I'm quite glad I played it again.

Japanese release it I think the end of this year. I really don't remember but I get a feeling that's what I read.
US release was later next year.
PS3 gets to play as other characters like the Prince who's name wriggles from my mind. Also it gets alternative endings aswell.
The story was fine as it was and the ending was shocking and sad.

Aye I hated the fight with Rondo.
What level are you at btw? I can't remember my level but I got beaten badly first time round, went and levels up a bit.
Went back to that town and stocked up on healing and revives.
I got the hang of Harmony Chains whilst levelling up aswell so get used to that. If you have Retto, Viola and Falsetto in good positions, as in light and dark, you can have Falsetto use (what moves I had for my characters) the ice move, then Retto was close and used his Bloody Plume, then Viola used her arrows raining down the sky. In the end I got about 4 or 5 moves off in one go when I built up the chain. You have to beat her good and proper though, block as much as you can. One of her moves is a beast and takes nearly all of your health.
(Been ages and I still remember it)
At least now you won't have to do it again in the second run through.

Black and Orange? Was it not the blue and Orange beasts which were stupidly easy to kill?
Still that didn't take me long, I'd taken pictures in the past and sold them. Any items that weren't as powerful as I had equipped were all sold. By the time I'd gotten to the Unison I had tonnes of money.
Just to give you an idea, my save file my characters were all level 80 before I went up against Rondo. Lol 28 hours on my first save file. That's the most time I've spent on a game I think.
Which reminds me the end battle is so sad.

Im on around 17-20 hours at the moment. As for the cash problem I didnt bother taking any pics as I always had enough money. Yeah those blue/black/orange things are easy to kill, hell they dont even get a hit on me if I do some chaining its just that is so time consuming.

When I found out about the last boss I wanted him to have really crappy gear, but like I said I sold all my crap items so everyone had the best items I could find.
As for the second time, I'm having trouble on some of the bosses, being only level 5 or 6 with no good special moves, but with Party level 6, this Baby Dragon in the Agogo forest is really annoying. Especially having more health and whatnot.

Yeah, the small green turnipy things are a doddle. But the massive wooden ones needed a beating. The small dragon boss was pretty hard, but when you have to save Polka that boss wasn't that hard.

Have you gotten up to Viola yet in your second run? They guy you have to give the long johns to gives you some milk, and you have to give him the milk apparently but having gone forward and backwards I can't seem to give him the milk. Did you already do this on your first play through? I'm thinking I can use the teleporter in Baroque to come back later hopefully.

Ive finally got all 1000 points off the game after another 20 hour run through. The trading sidequest and the score piece sidequest are just annoying.

For the final score piece you have to get to chapter 7 and then walk all the way back through 3 MASSIVE levels/areas all so you can get the last one.

For the trading sidequest the game gives you the ability to teleport to certain areas but these areas are always miles away from where you have to be. Be the time I was finished I was sick of the sight of Hanon Hills!

Now that Eteranl Sonata is done I can finally start Lost Odyssey, had it on my shelf for a few weeks now.
