View Full Version : Classic Cartoons

I got the idea for this thread after having a conversation with a friend of mine about how good cartoons used to be compared to todays rubbish (with the excpetion of Fairly Odd Parents that is).

Anyway this is a place to discuss all the shows you used to love watching, and I can remember quite a lot, but heres a few...

Alvin and Chipmunks - quality theme tune, three chipmunks called Alvin, Simon and Theadore lived with some guy named Dave, does it get any more random than that!

Banaman - Some little weedy kid called Eric Twinge eats a banana and swaps brain cells for muscle and has a crow for a sidekick.

Charlie Chalk - Possibly one of the best theme tunes ever devised "He can get you out of trouble, he can teach you how to juggle, Charlie Chalk, Charlie Chalk"!

Ducktales - Another quality theme tune "Duck Tales, a whooh ooh". Donald Duck goes on holiday and leaves his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, in care of Scrooge McDuck who is absolutely LOADED!

The Raccoons - Possible one of my favourites, Bert Raccoon lives in Evergreen forest and is constantly trying to foil Cyril Sneers evil plans to destroy the forest in order to make even more money!

These are just a few of many cartoons that I can remember watching as I kid, I would add more but then you guys wouldn't have anything to add yourselfs!

Also I found a great site were you can find info on loads of these shows and downloads theme tunes and opening videos, etc www.80scartoons.co.uk

Ren & Stimpy - these guys were amazing, totally off the wall and really, really, weird. Became a worldwide phenominan and made Nickelodeon billions, setting them up as the kiddie-swallowing behmoth it is today. Then the Nicklodeon CEOs took control after series 2, and it became pretty unfunny by the end of series 3. Died on its arse after series 5. Without them modern "greats" like Spongebob and Fairy God Parents simply would not be allowed to exsist. A crime against hummanity and the very fabric of the universe itself.

I never understood The Hurricanes, what sort of tosser smiles when they're playing football? You're too knackered to even move your face!
Anyway...

My two favourites: The Real Ghostbusters and Garfield And Friends.

Ones I liked:

Animaniacs
Top Cat
Tom And Jerry
Coyote And Roadrunner
Ren And Stimpy
Sonic
Mr. Bean The Animated Series

Ones I watched:

Real Monsters
Rocko's Modern Life
The Hurricanes
Biker Mice From Mars
Earthworm Jim
Dexter's Laboratory
The Flintstones
The Jetsons

Mr. Bean The Animated Series

How is that even remotely classic. Surely for the title classic, the cartoon must been slightly old, this is relatively new.

A classic people haven't mentioned is M.A.S.K. (not to be confused with the green faced dickhead).

And the Perls of Penelope Pitstop! The evil guy had some of the best schemes ever. I actually didn't watch either of these when I was little, picked them up on Boomerang... I didn't really watch cartoons, I prefered real life TV programs for some reason.

Was there a show called captain planet?

Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, Inspector Gadget, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, hoo, hoo.
Also the Moomin, which I watched despite it scaring the hell out of me, Captain Planet, Super Ted, Ducktails, Alvin and the Chipmunks (anyone remember a political episode where they brought down the Berlin Wall?), Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Wile. E. Coyote and Roadrunner, Tom and Jerry.

I pity kids today, missing out all these classics and getting served up poor rehashed versions.

Tom&Jerry, I moderately enjoyed Top Cat, Captain Planet and Ninja Turtles were fun, but I have to say that Powerpuff Girls hold a very special place in my tiny belgian chocolate heart (<3 Bubbles) and Samurai Jack deserves the term 'classic' already. I must say I enjoy Fairly Odd Parents and Spongebob quite a bit when I have the time.

Sure there's a lot of shit on tv nowadays but cartoons haven't really gone down in quality (at least, the stuff you see on CN) over the years, they've just evolved.

Yeah...Modern 'kidish' cartoons are complete shit, with a few exceptions. (Invader Zim, Spongebob - Fairly Odd Parents now annoys me because it's so annoyingly sucky)
They're all the same and about some annoying American 10 year old boy, or a group of annoying girls. After Nickelodeon lost all its greatness (Bogey, Rood (sp?), Mike McClean (sp?) Mou (sp?) & Lou) and all that, cartoons began to go downhill as well it seems.
Therefore, I only watch Invader Zim & Rocko's Modern Life on Nicktoons really now.

I'm not going to bother naming classic cartoons really, because they've all already been said. I get surprised about how many people day Biker Mice form Mars and Street Sharks though, even as a kid they seemed really kiddy to me. Bucky O'Hare i missed out on really; didn't watch that many episodes.

Funny you should mention that but me and the lads at work we on about the very same thing the other day. What was the deal with all the hand movements while talking?

Well they had to do something to make up for the lack of facial expession.

Also did you know that in about 90% of the "in suit scenes" the American actors aren't in the suits (and no i'm not talking sunt doubles either), all the "robot" and "in suit" fights are taken from footage from the original Japanesse show, the american show just creates stories around the stock footage from Japans previous seasons (ie: whats showing in Japan today will be used in next years "new" show here), i only found this out a few months ago from a issue of Neo, i always knew that Power Rangers was "copied" from a japanese show but never knew that they used footage from them (to save production time and costs).

And pretty much every Ranger-esque show that followed used the same method (using stock footage from Japanese shows), in fact remember VR troppers? The stock footage used for the 3 heros "robot forms" was taken from 3 different and unrelated shows, haha, madness.

The only Ranger-esque show that didn't use stock footage from Japan was Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog (haha, the Irish one, hehe) but due to not having stock footage it cost too much to produce and was the main reason it got cancelled. And to this day Power Rangers is the only one left standing::shrug: , i think i still have the orginal Megazord in the attic somewhere, i should look for it over the weekend.

Soory i went a bit off topic there, i went on a bit of a roll:heh:

You learn something new everyday.

You've reminded me of VR Troopers. The only thing I remember about that show was that in probably every show one of the characters who was possibly the leader of the Troopers was getting his arse handed to him for starters, main and dessert whilst his allies had some problem getting to his aid, when they'd finally arrive the "Leader" was about to pay the bill for the Arse D'Oeuvres towards the weird monster thingummyjig, and they'd kill the baddie with a gun or something.

And that has reminded me of another show I cannot remember the name of, but sure it had the word "Samurai" in it. It was a show in which a teenage lad would be transported into some computer world to destroy some monster that had appeared in there, possibly a virus. I can't remember it that well. And I bet no one here knows what I'm talking about.

It's wank in my opinion too, but I can see why people like it. I'm not into awkward cringe-comedy with so much realism, but some people are -- that's why it has a following.

AH NO, lets forget, damn i had successfully repreased those memories until now, oh the horror, those had to be the worst of the Power Ranger clones IMO.

(another tidbit, one of those shows...or maybe it was both...ended up being cancelled, not because of low ratings or high production costs but because they ran out of stock footage, cuz the original japanese show was cancelled/ended after two/three seasons...also i think with Masked Rider they ended up using "newer" stock footage first and worked "backwards"..i gotta find the issue of Neo and have a read again)
