After quite some wait here it is:
Revolution controller looks like futuristic television remote.
Glossy white design.
Looks Apple iPod inspired.
Controller is held in one hand. Attachments in the other.
Attachments connect to the bottom of the controller. Iwata shows analog stick attachment.
Thinking about packing Revolution with the main controller and attachment, Iwata says.
Controller acts like a mouse in real-space 3D. Pefect for FPS games!
Future attachments planned.

Looks interesting - but I'm not quite convinced yet. I want to see more!
I worry that it'll put off gamers, rather than encourage them...

u know what this is most definatly going to have ALOT of revolution hating now that the controller is out. and about the easy ports from PS3 and 360 i think not. nintendo is gonna be out there all by themselves... somehow they will survive! VIVA LA REVOLUTION

Can't say I'm not a little disappointed as the remote looks quite uncomfortable and the b+second a buttons look tough to get at... But I love the design, just wondering how well dual analogue will work.
Cubechris
16-09-2005, 03:17 AM
To be honest, i think i would have preffered a more standard form, somehow i see this hard for the developers to adapt to, but I also then think that the Gamecube controllers will continue to be used for games which are ported and better suited etc. and the fact that Iwata said this:
Thinking about packing Revolution with the main controller and attachment, Iwata says.
makes you think some more, as seriosly how is joe average going to play Fifa 0X with this? The cube controller lives on IMO

dont tink we will use the b button (4 gameplay) on the bottom but on the underneath.
Remember - any ports of Xbox 360 games or the like can just use the Gamecube pad.
They might even release it with a standard pad (probably exactly the same as the Gamecube one) so as not to put off third-party developers. That probably what those cube pad ports are really designed for.

I was intially all "WTF!? Nintendo iz teh doomed" and all that, but looking at the pics of people holding it, and the pics of it from all angles, it looks quite alright.
Naturally the litmus test is having a play with it ourselves. Nintendo, to me, make decent controllers, so I can't imagine it being that hard to use, or uncomfortable to hold.

I think the remote design is a bit strange but apart from that the whole idea is truly great (mouse like movement...) - and I only have read a summary yet - however I would have liked it if the "remote" was a bit more ergonomic; but I guess you have to hold it to be sure how it feels.

I'm not sure I like the idea of this 'Point and Click' to get about... I shall miss the anolouge. And reaching the buttons doesnt look that comfy. I wish we could of seen how this fits into games that arent Nintendo based, or any game footage at all.

Man am I one happy gamer! This is exactly the right move for Nintendo. Xbox360 and PS3 really look just plain ordinary to me now. Nintendo may have less third party support and turn hard core gamers off or whatever, but I'm betting they're really gonna shift the market to newer and broader audiences. Gooo Nintendooo! I can finally go to sleep! ;)
PS: Both ign and cube say the controller fits perfectly in your hands, so don't worry people, have nintendo ever made an uncomfortable controller?
And you want examples you say?
->Go to ign for a rundown on the demo's they got to play.
->Wait for the conference video where you get to see the expressions of the people playing, jus like the DS commercials way back on the japanese site. It's all about the smiling faces!

For 3rd party developers i think it will come down to the dev kits to decide what they do with ports. If theres an easy way to incorporate the new controller then obviously most games will use it. If it will take an extra month to program in then say hello to another 5 years of the GC pad for all games from EA, Activision, Konami, UbiSoft and Atari. I think Sega, Namco, Capcom and a lot of small comanies would take the time to add features that make use of this pad.
Now i want some footage of those demos and some game announcements + screenshots and a bit of info on them (im curious about smash bros with those pads)

After seeing the promo video (which I must say was excellently made) I am convinced. Again, it can be seen here (http://www.dagbladet.no/kultur/2005/09/16/443527.html) They've simply shown the game from the TVs perspective, and you see a load of people playing games. There's no screenshots at all, just people's body movement, and sound. It's really fantastic.

Thinking about packing Revolution with the main controller and attachment, Iwata says.
The cube controller lives on IMO
I think what he meant bt this is including the Rev controller (the 'remote' as the MAIN controller) and the analogue handset (this is the 'attachment')
I think the design is Beautiful, i love the style and the 'laminated' glossy sheen to the controller (and the rev for that matter).
I myself am all for this, as i will be buying the next Nintendo console, whatever!
And all the good comments only go to strengthen to interest and excitment; though there doesnt seem to be anywhere near enough buttons and surely you will have to hold it horizontally when playing ALL games, not just NES etc.. because using buttons directly underneath each other feels very strange (applies to the D-pad and 'A'), and the other buttons are right at the bottom!
Could have SOOOOOO much potential in FPS, as it should be even better than duel analogue; bring on the classic FPS' Nintendo.

Wow. This is certainly nothing like I was expected. I think I'll have to wait and play it for myself before passing judgement, but can't help shake that initial surge of confusion. The only thing I can liken this to is that sword-based fighter in arcades which was quite cool from what I remember.
Hopefully we'll get some great ideas for this system, and all our favourites will no doubt appear followed by a slightly tweaked/modernised GameCube controller update. Nintendo could at least add a real analogue stick onto the C stick, and perhaps streamline it a little more how their current generation console will look.
Current thoughts? Confusion, mixed with excitement. Is this Nintendo's bold new direction or a step forward into madness?

Do you think for certain games that don't reguire the analogue stick) you'll be able to turn the dpad part of the controller on its side(so it resembles a nes controller) thus making the second set of a and b buttons a lot more accessible?
edit-Just watched the video, and tbh, I'm not totally convinced-seems exceptionally gimmicky(more so than the DS's touch screen). I hope every game doesn't require these hacking/slashing/moving of controller in relation to the sensors. Not my sort of thing tbh.

Does anyone know anything abots the hardware specs?
and according to that perry woman, the cube controller cant be used in revolution games. please tell me i read it wrong cos i cant imagine playin FIFA on the rev controller n nintendo needs some standard games if they wanna keep their 'hardcore gamer' audience.

I am intrigued by this choice however I am also sceptical how this new design is going to adapt to third party games. Still I am really curious how this handles and that is always good.
Cant wait to see the final design of this controller!!!

Man you hit the nail on the head! People will walk into gamestores and see the pics on posters and stuff and say "man thats one sexy bit of kit... what is it"... then they should say "give me one now!"
So I wake up on my day off work today to find this.
Nintendo have gone insane, right? I wonder if it will come with an attachment to find the controller when you lose it down the side of the sofa.
I'm kidding! I'll reserve passing judgement until i've actually seen it's application in real games.

hehe Hi Flunx... nice to se you again
After watching the video I must say I am impressed and very excited! I still hope that the GameCube pad can be used for more traditional games though. It would be a shame to see Nintendo miss out on some great games (that PS3 & Xbox 360 will get) because of the controller.
It will be really great for FPS games. It will be great for moving, shooting and aiming! I especially love how you can slash around as if you are using a sword (Imagine Zelda!!!). There are just so many possibilities!! I really want to see what games Nintendo have in store for us. I'm confident they will be great.
Oh and it really looks sexy!

This is going to be fantastic! Nintendo has done it once again, an entirely new way of playing games. Too bad there's no game footage out yet. One of the most interesting things in the Revolution trailer was that guy playing drums by holding two controllers like drumsticks. I'd definately buy a drum-sim, or any music-sim really. Imagine using the left controller to push a button which stands for a chord and swinging the right one like you would on a real guitar! The possibilities are endless with this new form of input.

After looking at the video, all I can think is that this will be one tiring console. You can't sit back and enjoy playing your games. You need to use excessive wrist action. With the right games released, this could be good, but the buttons on the controller need to be sorted out.

Nintendo have revealed that this single device will slot into a more conventional device to allow more control methods for veterans and make it more accessable to ports. IGN have made a mock up of how this may look: http://cubemedia.ign.com/cube/image/article/651/651559/understanding-the-revolution-controller-20050916041026412-000.jpg

Hmm so if I were to play a RTS game with that controller and I want to select some units to move then I would have to hold down the A or B button ala the left mouse button on a mouse?
Sounds bloody awesome like your turning your TV into a touch screen but you have so much freedom to do so much more. It won't probably work for everything like football games but with that the ability to make it into a normal looking controller it'll be fine.
