Played the demos for both The Darkness 2 and Syndicate (co-op) today, and by god those are two games I will purchase. The Darkness was a given since I really loved the first game, and even though it's Digital Extremes working on it rather than Starbreeze, it is going to be pretty fantastic, and it plays pretty well even though I'm interested in it from more of a story perspective. Syndicate on the other hand, by god, it feels mechanically great, although the shooting functions are ripped from Crysis 2, it still looks to have enough of it's own quirks to make it interesting. Funnily enough, it's being developed by Starbreeze :heh:

Similarly, I tried the Darkness II demo and the Goldeneye demo this weekend.

However I was left with the desire to own only one of those, can you guess which? :/ I'll give you a hint, it wasn't the one that felt like Call of Duty: James Bond Edition.

I don't understand why they've gone for cartoon graphics on the Darkness II though; I preferred the look of the first. In fact I think I hate those kinds of visuals, it was probably the one thing I didn't enjoy all the way through Borderlands.

I've also given the new Goldeneye a shot as well, i knew it wouldn't be like the original. With that in mind, i looked at the demo as if it were a new title. It wern't brilliant really.

GoldenEye is actually quite different than Modern Warefare. You get to be much stealthier (if you choose). The single player is much more fun than any after CoD4.

The worst thing about it...you know that epic Trevelyan speech by the helicopter explaining why he turned in the film?

It's been replaced with "I'm evil because the bloody bankers got their bloody bonuses!"

Shorty

The demo stopped before you jumped off the dam (...) but I didn't really feel much opportunity to be stealthy after the first sniper tower. How on Earth I was going to infiltrate the main base after killing 20+ enemies from a truck and blowing up a tanker with my AK47, I never got to find out.

Guys I have a question about Xbox DRM.

I know you can transfer licenses to a new console once a year. But if you get a new console before that time And you've already used the transfer can you play your DLC or is it useless till the year is up? I think I remember someone saying you can still use it but you need to be connected to live to do so?

Can someone clear this up for me.

As long as your signed in online with the gamertag that bought the dlc/xbla then it will work.

I went like two years without knowing about transfering licences as I only have my gamertag signed in when I got a new one when mine broke.

I would assume it will just be a 'computer says no' moment, where it will ask you to sign into xbox live with the gamertag.

As I was only ever signed in I never really encountered what would happen.

Now I loved the first one and was pretty excited for the sequel, but the game is just far too short and easy. I think total campaign time was around the 5 hour mark. You do get another little campaign to do in the form of Vedetta, but even that is only about a couple of hours long.

The story isn't as interesting as the first game, although the end was pretty cool. The Darkness powers aren't as good either. I miss being able to send out my little darkness snake/worm and rip peoples throats out. :(

Does anyone else feel like it's been such a slow, unexciting year for gaming so far? In November, things went crazy, and Skyrim and Dungeon Defenders have tided me over quite nicely since their release. March is looking fantastic. But it feels like a real drought in between. I'm really looking forward to SSX and Mass Effect 3, as well as the new Naruto game, but it feels like they're taking forever to arrive.

I've got a local rental shop that offers weekly rentals for 4 AUD (like, ?3ish) on select (read: old) titles; Played Mafia II through rather solidly, only needing the collectables achievements but figured it wasn't worth another $4 just to get those. Played TMNT and got all 1000G in like 4 hours - ridic. Currently been playing Godfather: The Game for 30 hours/1 week and a day - for an xbox/2006 game it is quite meaty, albeit rather repetitive and, in many ways, massively dated. Did anyone else catch this title, or have any memories?

There rental shop doesn't have a very large catalogue of weekly rentals on offer, but I think there were two or three maayyybe titles left to try, including duke nukem - then I think I'll have to go halves with my cousin on Skyrim.

Rumour has it that (new) Arcade games from June 1st will be worth 400 achievement points rather than 200.

Interesting... if true then I think this may have a lot to do with developer RedLynx pushing the boundaries of what to expect from an arcade title with the release of Trials Evolution as from what I've seen that title is more than just a simple sequel as not only does it appear to retain all the elements that made the original Trials HD such a fantastic title but it looks like they've added a lot more.

Simultaneous online multiplayer will undoubtedly be one of its main selling points but what intruiges me more is the level editor which looks to be extremely powerful and versatile especially for a downloadable game, interestingly it seems not only to allow you to create tracks but actual slef-contained mini-games within the confines of the games engine... that's what it looked like from the latest trailer anyway.

June 1st would seem a likely date for it so I'm gonna call it now, if this gamerscore increase is going to happen for all/some XBLA titles then Trials Evolution will most lkely be the game that launches it, if I'm wrong then the game will just come out even earlier with less gamerscore - if the rumour is even true - but either way I can't wait for it. :D

Ballsed up a little today; bought some gamerpoints in-store. According to customer services, there's different laws concerning "point payment schemes" in different regions, and as such, both points and gamer accounts are 'region locked'. Which means if you buy points and scratch off the foil stuff, you can't return the card in-store and you can't get the points on your 'foreign' account.

However, due to the admittedly rather nicely broad licensing regulations MS have in place, it is possible to simply create a new Australian account to which the code is redeemed, then once DLC is downloaded onto the console any other profile logged in can play it! Phew.

If I ever buy a new 360 pad, that'll probably be it though I bought the original silver pad with the new d-pad, only thing that annoyed me slightly after a while is how the buttons aren't their original colours but it wasn't really a deal-breaker seeing as the layout has always been instinctive but I do like the fact that they've reinstated the colours for these. :)

Although...

I can't imagine those looking good from the moment you touch them.

This is a minor concern, fingerprints will surely show up on them very easily indeed but the thing I'd be more concerned about is the coating... is it substantial enough to not be worn away over time in a way that'd make the pad look... odd :p a lot of my old 360 pads went 'shiny' as the surface wears away over time, if they are durable though then they seem pretty decent. :D

Microsoft is set to roll-out TV-style advertising for Xbox Live, with 15-30 second spots set to run within TV and video apps.

The deal also confirms new channels coming soon to US gamers, including anime-streaming from Manga Entertainment.

"With the growth of Xbox Live, advertisers no longer have to choose between digital and TV advertising - we're offering the impact of TV and the interactivity and addressability of digital in one platform," said Microsoft's Ross Honey, general manager of Xbox Live Entertainment and Advertising.
"As more and more industry leaders like ESPN work with us to help monetize their content on Xbox Live, TV media buyers win with the ability to extend their standard TV spots to this highly engaged consumer audience."

Microsoft has recently enjoyed a huge increase in advertising revenue from Live. The service has earned Microsoft 142 per cent more ad cash since 2010.
US Gold subscribers now spend an average of 84 hours a month signed in to Xbox Live, with entertainment app usage recently surpassing online multiplayer gaming for the first time.

Microsoft will reportedly preview its new music service, code-named Woodstock, at E3 2012.
The cross-platform offering will operate on Xbox 360, Windows 8 PCs, phones and tablets, plus Android and iOS devices. It will completely replace the current Zune brand.

Woodstock will be browser-based, Verge reports, but run without plugins.
Spotify-eque social playlist sharing, Facebook features and iTunes Match-style library integration are also likely.

Microsoft's E3 demo will come some months ahead of Woodstock's launch, according to the report. The final product is set to be released alongside the first wave of Windows 8 devices due later this year.

UPDATE: We've just heard back from Microsoft: "We haven't made any announcements and we don't comment on rumor or speculation."

ORIGINAL STORY: Microsoft is to launch an Xbox 360 and Kinect bundle priced at just $99, according to a report from The Verge.

However, that low price will be offset by a monthly subscription fee of $15 to run for two years, which will include Xbox Live Gold membership and "possibly some additional streaming content from cable providers or sports package providers".

That adds up to a total outlay of $459. The current Xbox 360 and Kinect bundle sells for around $299, while two years of Xbox Live Gold membership is around $120.

According to The Verge's inside source, any customers who want out of the deal ahead of time will have to pay a termination fee.

It's thought that Microsoft's thinking behind the offer is to better position its console as a competitor to Apple TV, Roku and PlayStation 3.

If true I imagine it will be officially announced at E3.

I got my renew for £24 last year from Microsoft themselves.

I rang up to cancel the auto renew and they came out with some 'because i'm a long running loyal customer bla bla bla' they offered me a renewal at that price.

Go to Marketplace on your console then Featured > Love Live. That's the best price you can get through the console except...

The best price you can get altogether is if they offer you 2 months for £2 through the dash, this is account specific but would only be £12/year if it continues to be available.

Other best price is to call Xbox like Mike says, they tend to give it you for £24 and if you barter they might even throw in some points depending on what mood they're in.

Cheers, Shorty. Problem is that I don't want to put my new card details on my Xbox. My last card ran out at the start of the year and i'm trying not to put my new card on as it makes buying MS points far too easy. :D

Ha, put your card on, then disable automatic renewal and change your billing address through xbox.com. Payments won't go through on your xbox then unless you go on your PC and fix your address.*

No.

What they should do is to make all the E3 demos playable for the week of E3.

Microsoft has it's own take on the Vitality Sensor.

Microsoft is preparing to update its Xbox 360 dashboard software to include a cross-application exercise tracking system, according to our sources. Kinect Play Fit will allow Xbox gamers to track their exercise across most Kinect games, providing tracking metrics in the cloud. The software maker is also planning to release a hardware accessory, codenamed Joule, to accompany the Kinect Play Fit service.

The Joule heart-rate monitor will let Kinect owners track their heart rate wirelessly and ensure any exercise is within a target goal for weight loss, strength, or cross-fitness workouts. Although EA currently ships its own heart rate monitor with EA Sports Active 2 for the Xbox 360, Microsoft's Joule monitor will be compatible with most Kinect games — but you won't need it to make use of the new exercise tracking feature of Kinect Fit Play. We don't have a solid release date for the Kinect Play Fit system, but sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have indicated to us that a future dashboard update will introduce the system. We expect the company to detail some of its Kinect plans at E3 next month, alongside more Xbox Live content deals and additional software enhancements for the Xbox 360.

Andy and Dan wave goodbye. :(

icrosoft has confirmed the cancellation of Inside Xbox in Europe.
The news follows last week's cancellation of Inside Xbox in the US, and accompanies job losses at Microsoft's Xbox UK team.

Explaining the decision, US community man Major Nelson wrote on his blog that the Inside Xbox Europe team had decided to ditch first-party produced content in favour of a third-party content model.

"Following the news last week that that Inside Xbox in the US was to cease production, the team in Europe has been investigating what makes most sense for them and the Xbox Live community as they continue to strive to deliver the latest gaming and entertainment news for users across the region," Major Nelson said.

"As such, they have decided to move away from the current first-party produced content model and transition to a third-party content model, which will provide timely and locally-relevant content to users across more of the EMEA markets. Whilst this means that the Inside Xbox brand will effectively be retired in Europe, the focus remains on continuing to provide the Xbox LIVE community with the latest and best in games and entertainment news and information."

Dan Maher, aka MrPointyHead, former Xbox Live editor and one half of the Inside Xbox UK team, thanked fans for their support.

"So, to be clear and succinct: Inside Xbox is no more, as are our jobs," he wrote on his Twitter page. "Your support during the last four years has meant the world to us."

To be honest I hated those guys at the start, but as the years went on they really grew on me. I loved watching SUAM to see what stupid stuff they would get up to. This was killed off well before this announcement. When the new dash update happened these shows were hid out of view and a nightmare to find.

On the last dashboard it was in plain view, you just had to scroll up or down when a new episode was released. It just feels like slowly but surely they are taking everything about gaming and hiding it or just flat out getting rid of it from the dashboard.

I'm dreading Microsofts E3, as I can see it just being all about the TV shows/advertisement side of things and then a small portion being about Halo 4 and whatever else they have in the making, if anything.

Here's how I see it going:

Open with Black Ops 2 demo
Show a montage of third-party games
Talk about new entertainment services
Show off a new version of the Dashboard coming later this year, now with more adverts
Reveal their cross-game Kinect exercise tracking thing; this is likely to feature an awkwardly scripted on-stage presentation
Close out with Halo 4

Rare getting ready for next gen.

Following yesterday's revelation that Fable studio Lionhead is making an "MMO-like" RPG for the next Xbox, it has now emerged that Kinect Sports developer Rare is working on a raft of Durango games.
Rare is hiring for "multiple" triple-A games for the next Xbox, according to a job ad.

The job spec (spotted by Superannuation), calls for a senior product manager to help create "multiple AAA future console releases".

It suggests Rare will continue to make games in the successful Kinect Sports franchise, but also branch out with new IP. The listing says the candidate will ideally have experience in the action/adventure or FPS genres.

"Whilst continual development of their core releases will be maintained, the successful candidate will be joining at a time where the studio is looking to move into new areas and develop new IPs for future platforms," it reads.

"You will have a successful history of releasing exceptional AAA games and these will ideally be in the Action/Adventure or FPS genre but this is not essential."

Last month former Sega design chief Simon Woodroffe became the new creative director of Rare. "I am looking forward to getting stuck into making incredible games that will be worthy additions to the pedigree of the studio," he said at the time.

Rare has in recent years focused on Kinect Sports, but over the years has released a number of Xbox games for owner Microsoft, including Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Viva Pinata and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.
We've asked Rare for comment.

This is nice to see. I have loved Rares output on the 360. Banjo Kazooie and the Viva Pinata games were outstanding and Kameo is still one of the best launch games I have played on recent systems. I even enjoyed the original Kinect Sports game. I know the glory days are gone but I still have a soft spot for the company.

The Rare situation is really annoying - they own many franchises I loved on the N64 but have done nothing with them (I loved Nuts & Bolts but it isn't really a Banjo game, Kameo was also great).

Still...some news places have mentioned Perfect Dark, but it sounds like they haven't even decided what kind of game they're going to make.

US judge readies the ban hammer.

A judge has recommended that the Xbox 360 be banned in the US.
Courthouse News reports that Judge David Shaw said the International Trade Commission should use a cease and desist order to ban imports of the Xbox 360 Slim 4GB and 250GB models into the US because, in his view, they infringe on four patents owned by Motorola.

He also wants Microsoft to post a bond equal to seven per cent of the value of unsold Xbox 360s in the US.

The patents at the heart of the dispute revolve around how the Xbox 360 decodes video content. Motorola claims ownership on the tech powering this.
Reacting to this latest decision, Microsoft argued the ban would not serve the public interest because it would leave consumers with only two home console options: the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii. But the judge rejected the claim, saying it was more important to enforce intellectual property rights. Plus, he wasn't convinced Sony and Nintendo wouldn't be able to meet increased demand.

Microsoft said the suggested seven per cent bond was unnecessary, and recommended it be reduced to 2.5 per cent. Motorola wants it increased to a whopping 100 per cent of the value of the unsold Xbox 360s.

So what happens next in this long-running, complex patent dispute? If the ITC makes the judge's recommendation final, President Barack Obama will then have 60 days to review the decision. After that period expires, the next step is the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Earlier this month a US judge accused the warring factions of using the US District Court as "a pawn in a global, industry-wide business negotiation".
Judge James Robart said both sides were clearly "driven by an attempt to secure commercial advantage". "To an outsider looking at it, it has been arbitrary, it has been arrogant and frankly it has been based on hubris," he said.

A German court has already ruled in favour of Motorola, granting an injunction prohibiting sales of the console in the country. However, Robart issued a temporary restraining order preventing Motorola from enforcing that decision.

It's already banned in Germany. These patent things are getting a complete mess: They're massively hindering the market. Especially mobile phones - all the lovely new HTC phones are currently held up in US customs.

And the majority of them are over small things that have little impact on the actual devices (like Samsung phones were "banned" due to a tiny thing in the photo gallery app, which was replaced before the ban came into place so the ban never happened).

It's also strange how these companies work together in other areas (for example, Samsung make a ton of components for Apple - including being the main provider for the iPad 3's screen and processor).

I'm sure they'll reach the agreement before it happens. If not, the ban looks like it's due to happen at around the same time the Wii U is due to launch - which could be a big boost for Nintendo.

It's really very different technology from Kinect. Kinect is focused on a larger distance and detecting the entire body while Leap is short distance and just your hands.

Looks like great technology, but it's a different application to Kinect.
