The latest fossil find belongs to a species called Australopithecus anamensis, which lived about 4.2 million years ago, between the earlier Ardipithecus ramidus and the later Australopithecus afarensis.
Why can't they just give them simple names like Steve or something?

Knowledge is power.

A lot of hype over nothing much, it says is was bassicaly just a monkey, which they recon walked on 2 legs, and helps to bridge the gap between man and monkey, it's not quite the perfect "missing link" that it's hyped to be. It even admits that most of the fossils are just a bunch of teeth.

Of course this is going to be useful to mankind. You could say the same thing about gravity "Oh that's really a load of use, I already know that if I jump off something I'll fall." The point of it is that knowledge, no matter how small, fights ignorance. If nobody researched anything or made any historical, scientific or philosophical breakthroughs we'd all still be sat around in bear skins worshipping a skull on a stick. This discovery is a great step forward in finding about evolutionary history and the origins of mankind and will help fight the terrifying idiocy creeping into todays society. For example I read today in The Guardian that a recent BBC survey in the UK showed that 48% of people believe in evolution while a massive 39% believe in creationism/ "intelligent design", this kind of news just makes me just want to scream some sense into people before we end up sleep walking back into the Dark Ages.

This brings back happy memories for me. At school, we always called my mate "monkey boy" or the missing link. The missing link was discovered years ago, at my high school.
Seriously, i agree with what weeyellowbloke just said. It's good to test people's theories to see if they hold any substance. That's the whole point of researching or taking part in experiments.

GREAT FIND!!!
please update if you find pictures...
after having read the whole thing ... this is resent as hell!! and one hell of a discovery!!
"This new discovery closes the gap between the fully blown Australopithecines and earlier forms we call Ardipithecus. We now know where Australopithecus came from before 4 million years ago," Professor White said.
wow
cant wait til for the discovery channel to make a special on this....!!BU-YA!!
great find ... you rock ballZZ

Creationism does more damage to relgion than it does to science. That's why the high ranking religous types with a bit of nous (like Mr Pope) accept evolutionary theory.

But I believe in God
so do i...but i have no idea what god is (dont want to pretend like i do either)...
you can believe in god and believe in evolution , at the same time..
its all the same anyhow ..
just think about how many other forms of life who would exist all over the universe (and possibly even in OTHER universes too) ...if god exists .. then we all SHARE IT ..
i look at evolution as a form of god..

good view! i was brought up a catholic and i'm not sure at all about god in either way but i know i cant stand the catholic church or any kind of religious authority for that matter. but having faith has fuck all to do with whether you go to church etc or not.
evolution definatly happend-the JW's who say that it never happend and that all the fossils and all the dinosaurs etc etc where all put there by god to test our faith or somat-i'm sure a JW will correct me. either way its a bit dumb and ignorant to just do that. i've been arguing about this so much internally but i dont think you can reach an agreement in what you believe in like a few years-more like a lifetime.
anywho . . . good news anyway! gotta love biology eh? and anything that backs up darwin against all the religous ignorant zealots(heres lookin at you bible belt usa!) is good!

In the end whats more beliveable?: Big dude in the sky making everything by magic, or creatures adapting to their environments to survive?
I met some people recently who dont believe in evolution. They ignored all the evidence for it and claimed that "god" made us from scratch. When I asked them why we share 98% DNA with apes they couldnt give me a solid answer. We're monkeys people, warmongering mostly ignorant monkeys.

I don’t understand how people cant believe in evolution, you see it everyday. The variation between individuals is a part of evolution, within the animal kingdom if such a variation offers success (being taller to reach higher in a tree such as a giraffe) that creature would stand a higher chance of being able to breed resulting in the offspring obtaining those genes.
To believe that we just... popped out of nowhere due to an unseen force makes me think we are alien to this planet, that we dont even belong here.
And now to sleep... (if my niece decides to stay asleep...)
