Reading that page it sounds like they'll update it as they add more rollouts to different regions. Having said that, sounds like the rollout will start soon, but then last right through to early next year, so it'll probably be a bit of a lottery when you get your free uber upgrades.

Personally, I'm ecstatic about getting 4Mb, but you guys moving up to 10Mb must be very excited!

I just recieved a letter about this upgrade through the post this morning. Quadrupled speed for no extra cost? Thanks, Telewest.

Also, the fact that we are finally recieving an increase in upstream speed is great news.

Not really, any speed past 1Mb won't make much difference. Its ping times that are important. My pings are actually pretty good. 10ms to google.co.uk and 8ms to ZenAdsl.co.uk

My pings are actually pretty good. 10ms to google.co.uk and 8ms to ZenAdsl.co.uk

I receive on averege 6ms pings while playing CS:Source using a Telewest connection, and that's also over a wireless network.

My parents got a phonecall from Telewest this afternoon explaining the upgrade and all that..............my parents know f-all about internet basics, so my Dad asked Telewest if they are considering reducing prices in the near future. The answer from Telewest was of course a big fat "no", so my parents are now considering swapping the Telewest line for a BT+AOL combo. Bloody idiots.

I explained the whole deal about caps, and just how shitty AOL are in general, but my Dad explained to me that the Telewest phonebill costs are just too high. He's kept his AOL account for the last 2 years after we got Blueyonder installed just for his Email address, and that's cost him £5.99 per month. Idiot Mk-2.

I think I just saved our Telewest contract by explaining to him that they're giving us a £50 service for free, and other providers aren't going to provide this until atleast mid next year. Also I can't see the three computers in our house running on a 1Mb from AOL and there also being caps on download limits.

In the end it's the phonebill that's to blame, so it's my parents fault for racking up these bills in the first place.

When my older bro gets in he'll just explain to them again exactly what I said earlier, so they'll have no chance against 2 screaming kids.

And yeah, 4Mbs is going to rule, we're getting it here around the 2nd week of October.

Ping's definitely the key factor in online gaming, but you've also got to consider that for some types of online gaming (e.g. XBox Live) the more upload bandwidth you've got, the better. The upload on telewest's lines has always been their weak point for online gaming, but their pings are usually excellent.

Yea but Telewest Cable offer a vastly faster upload speed then any ADSL based service, does it actually work at that speed? Or does it have a tendancy to fall back, if the latters the case I can see where your coming from. But from a standard side by side comparison Telewest looks far supirior to anything you can get from BT Wholesale. Excluding SDSL.

Telewest's upload speeds are slower than almost all ADSL... it's the one drawback of cable.

Typical cable upload is 128k, vs the 256k of (typical) ADSL. Faster cable uploads are only 256k normally.

Jordan
10-10-2005, 01:59 PM
384K is useless for 10mbit, It's supposed to be 10% of your connection. Meaning 1mbit aka 120KB/s upload speed. Oh we can only prey.

As for more cable areas, once Telewest and NTL are finally and fully merged no doubt they will plan more cable coverage.

My Telewest connection was upgraded lastweek to 4Mbps. Just wondering if everyone else has had theirs upgraded aswell?

I've been doing a few speedtests, and the results are varying between 2.8Mbps and 3.6Mbps. It may be that the servers just can't cope with such a connection, and are relaying back different speeds each time.

Has anyone else been testing their connections?

Jordan
30-10-2005, 11:51 PM
Mine has ben running much slower than normal. Its the entire network, its under alot of stress and on back up ones so that the current ones can be upgraded.

I wouldn't see the upgrade till Dec or Jan :(

Schpickles
31-10-2005, 08:46 AM
My date's "TBA", but I've not seen a speed increase yet.

There's heaps of telewest vans around the bristol area at the moment (probably implementing the upgrades). We've already got all the teleport features, which I'm guessing was half the reason we got this bandwidth increase anyway.

My connection's been fairly consistent, but slightly under it's supposed 1Mbit (even when including overheads) for a few months. I also get the occasional stall, where I don't get anything out of my internet connection for about 10-20 seconds. It doesn't happen very often, but I can find no reason to suspect that it's caused by my router, so I'm attributing it to my telewest connection :)

Still, perfectly happy to put up with this in the interim, for the sake of a free 400% speed increase :)

Stewilo2005
01-11-2005, 05:10 PM
Same here, mine's TBA. Oh well, can't wait till they do it though. I'm on 4M now so i can't wait for 10M. :hehe:

so is telewest a good broadband provider. as i need BB when i move out and dont know who to go with, also is it a year minimum contract.

Schpickles
04-11-2005, 08:54 PM
yeah, they are very good in my experience. It's a 12 month minimum contract. I don't know if it applies to telewest, but ntl used to do 9month contracts for students, if that's of interest?

My connection's all over the place tonight - apparently earlier on it was really, really quick, but now it's down to about 256k speeds, so obviously something is going on. Fingers crossed, I'll have my upgrade this weekend :)

Slightly off-topic but my Zen DSL connection has been odd this week. I have been getting 70-80kb/s download speeds on my mear 512kbps connection. Naturally its not spikes because its been continuous and verified by DU Meter.

Odd considering my speed is meant to be firmly held at 512kbps because of line length and attenuation problems. But the thing has been rock solid for 4 months now. Infact my modem has been connected to the DSLAM and exchange for 3.5 months solid now, without a single line drop.

the person that gets 6 ping on source needs to change their rates ^_^ otherwise u wont be able to hit people as accuratly and peop,e wont be able to hit you either

type these in console (your ping might increase but your bullets WILL actually hit them) :)

rate 20000
cl_updaterate 80
cl_cmdrate 80

(if you alreyd know and have done this yet still get 6 ping then ur 1 lucky mofo)

Looking at the list of areas being done, it looks like they're doing towns individually. I do hope i'm wrong though, because I live in Kidderminster.. which is about the same distance from Birmingham that Stourbridge is.
