Quote:
Gamasutra reports this morning on the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe dropping a Playstation 3 price during an interview with radio station Europe 1.
George Fornay said that the Playstation 3 will be hitting Europe for €499 to €599 or about $612 to $734. Fornay also confirmed that the PS3 will be hitting Europe this November. Finally, Fornay reiterated that the dealy of the Playstation 3 was due to last minute changes in the Blu-ray’s copy protection.
Wow, that’s so very over-priced.
Looks like the beast will be expensive after all!

Thats £350-£420 still alot more than the 360 was.
darksnowman
05-04-2006, 04:28 PM
I even consider the Revo dear and were sure its gonna be cheaper than that, like half the price? Whoa I dont know what to say like but if Nintendo priced the N5 up in that kinda bracket I might have to actually think twice about gettin it. They wont though.
If these PS3 thingys fly off the shelves then people are crazy and should like look into giving their cash to charity instead of Sony.

thats ridiculous considering we now know it's barely more powerful than the 360 is.

Quoted for truth.
Fuck that. I don't even want a new higher capacity format for HD films, I don't even want a HDTV, they're far too expensive.
On top of that the electricity bill for HDTVs, HD games consoles and HD broadcasting systems (like Sky) cost more than the generic standard freeview counterparts.
Why do we need it all? I mean Revolution will play on a standard widescreen TV, it will play DVDs on that TV which are relatively cheap these days and the electricity bill for it all will be much lower.
I know this is the 'Other Consoles' forum but I really don't see how the PS3 stands a chance.. especially if they don't meet Europe in 2006 as everyone will be in debt from Christmas.

I think Nintendo should get the Rev as low as possible. $200 seems likely but there was an IGN report that said how it could be as low as $150 or $100. If they can get them out at $150 then people would no doubt buy them. or Nintendo could have a nice bundle with a Rev, 2 controllers (nun-thingy included) 2 shells and a game for $250... I'm sure they could get that.
500 euros is ridiculous for a console, I will never buy a console for that much.

Woah, that's the first time I've seen 4 people in a row quote the same passage...
I reckon demo stations will play a big part in the next gen. If people play the Rev, sees what it does, looks at the price and see a kick ass bundle it could blow the PS3 out of the water. Especially if the graphics are only slightly better than the 360.

I bet a ton of people get them for Christmas because the PS3 is out of stock at the £400 retail and only available on eBay for £700 without any games.

The way I look at prices of things is if it's worth it's price in games.....So that's like £400/£35*.....So that's like 10 games or more :|
If you got a Rev you could get a Rev (£175 say) 3 Extra Controllers (£25 each?!) plus around 5 games......THEN you'd still need a PS3 game or 2 for the PS3 to be worth anything at all really, so that's another £100?!?! So then that's like another 2-3 games!!!
Anyway...you'll probably be able to get around 4-7 Revo games a Revo and 3 extra controllers for that price :|
I know that might sound a lil fanboy-y, but I'd never spend that on a console, and I'm a game addict!! I'd much rather go for the Revo..
It's ashame many people will just get a PS3 to be cool, rather than to actually play it.
*Averagly kind of for this gen and probably 1st Party Revo titles

It'll be more like this:
C: I want to buy one of these next gen consoles
GW: Alright then, we have the PS3 at £400, for that you get a machine, a DVD format that could well be obsolete in 6 months, and 1 horribly designed controller.
C: Hmmmm, sounds crap, and what about the other one.
GW: The Nintendo Revolution is priced at £150, for that you get the first true advancement in games in over ten years, a customisable controller you can use by moving or pressing the buttons, and for an extra £30 you get a game.
C: Sounds great, but what was the name of that first one again?
GW: PS3
C: *Gasp* PlayStation!! Gimme gimme gimme, I can go without eating for a few weeks.

€499-€599?
And I heard people calling the Xbox 360 Core System expensive. The ones who did get it were considered spoilt FFS. How the hell are they going to react to this?!
Big problem there is, I won't be able to get a decent-length job until Summer '08 (because I'm 16 at the end of Summer '07 ><). Even then, I was planning to spending a lot of that money on gifts were Christmas and birthdays, as well as Mother's Day and Father's Day ._.
I don't even need Blu-Ray, DVD will be here to stay for another few years I bet, so the need for a new, pricey format just seems like a waste. Especially if it flops (and there very well may be a chance of it).

You can all joke about nobody buying it, and I agree that parents will be deterred but lets not forget the mid 20s-early 30s demographic who do 9-5 office jobs and will be able to afford them, and gladly spend god knows how much. It will sell fine, it will sell out, it will just have a press backlash for its price point.

Just heard that Toys 'r' us are taking pre-orders for the PS3.
for $50 you can get yourself a PS3 premium pack (with 60gb hard-drive) and two games on launch.
That means that Sony has been in discussion with retailers (well the largest ones) and they're doing what they did with the PS2.. you get a folder and fill out pre-orders for £20/$50 fee you can have a system guaranteed on launch.
There is a cut off point and after that nobody is assured a system.. many stores wont have any allocated for people without pre-orders.
I remember popping £20 on the till for my PS2 in Argos and it was the last day before the cut off point (some time in late September) and I got my PS2 in November waiting for me on the shelf with everyone else scrapping to get one on eBay.
Sony is much more organised here and if you cough up the money early you can get guaranteed a system.. unlike what 360 consumers got. Many 360 premium pre-order people didn't get their system and ended up walking home with a core pack and £200 in accesories.
I think anyone with £20 and some vague motivation to get a PS3 will be able to on launch.
I hope Nintendo do the same instead of having 16 hour DS-esque camp outs.
You can all joke about nobody buying it, and I agree that parents will be deterred but lets not forget the mid 20s-early 30s demographic who do 9-5 office jobs and will be able to afford them, and gladly spend god knows how much. 100% agree, there is still a cool factor about the PS3 which has been with a generation since the PS1.
Ever heard of the 3P room? Porn, Pool and Playstation.. it's what all bachelors aspire to have.. and they don't live in a world where money is an issue like pointed out- parents do.
What could this mean? this generation kids do not get the Playstation, they get a Nintendo system.. and they grow up with Nintendo because it's a more affordable system.
and when this generation grows up they will buy another Nintendo system and Nintendo becomes 'cool' again like Sony once had.
However a lot of cool marketing will need to follow, I remember being in awe at the Fincher PS2 adverts.

It would probaly be a nicer earner, to pre-order one, then when you get it stick it on ebay, it's bound to sell out and will give a good profit for anyone who has the money to invest in the first place.

Here is a theory:
Yesterday Sony Europe person revealed the price of the PS3.
Today Sony is denying it all, and blaming a bad translation.
They could just be testing us all, and see how we would react to that price they revealed yesterday. They certainly got enough responses.

Am i the only one who thinks that retro lovers post wasnt funny...in the slightest, i mean talk about over reacting over one post
LOOK OMG RETRO LOVER FOR GOD'Cause he said the F word.
I think Substeinar has got it bang on there- someone cocked up, figured it was common knowledge and released what his price range is (€100 is still a lot)
I think it's quite likely Sony plays the monopoly card- it will have the first blu ray drive on the market being a home brew tech. and that will be £700, making the PS3 at £500 seem cheap (oo blu ray included)
That's what happened when the PS2 came out, DVD players on their own cost about £250 (for a Sony one, i know there was some cheaper ones that did the job) and it just seemed to make sense.
the ps2 dvd drives were shit. I'd rather have a ps3 with a dvd drve. Blueray is not the next big thing.

I think they have shot themselves in the foot with a price tag that high. Don't get me wrong, sure some bachelours will buy it cause it's got Playstation written on it but they're missing out massively on the council estate Chavs who all own the current PS2. On top of that kids at school won't have one (The rich ones may) which means word of mouth doesn't happen.
I think Sony are playing on their brand names, both the Playstation and Blu-Ray name hoping to make it a seller.. I think for that price they're wrong.

I draw the link at Revo at 200 quid. If it has a massive bundle like that GC shell for the controller and all the other shells, nun-chuckas, games, and maybe an updated Wi-Fi connector, then I'm in.
What's wrong with the current connector? I don't think they should bundle the connector with it as many people a) already have one or b) have something else. They can buy it seperately if they need/want one. I would say £200 for the console, a controller (with nun-chuck and shell) and a game. Realistically, it wont be any cheaper that that, I reckon the console will be £130, the same price as the GC at launch.

My bet is anything up to and including 60 pounds for a game.
I would guess 30 for a controller, but we don't know what the controller will be like since we don't know what it is anymore.
Im guessing itll have motion sensors, tv remote shape..

Although all these amazing astounding games come on PS2 such as Ico, Shadow of the Collosus, MGS3 etc come out, 70% of people who own a Playstation buy it for three reasons: Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto, Pro Evo.
Unless a company had all these 3 games and more theres no way Sony will ever fall.

It'll be more that £500.
£400 for console, £60 per game, £25 for a second controller. Thats £545. Thats too much.
Oh, and to get your moneys worth out of the £400 console, you need an HD-TV, which will set you back £1000.
£1545 vs £200 (a rev, second controller, and 2 games).
The winner is obvious.

That's a stupid argument. The Rev will probably be about £150 (but with a second controller pack-in) and the PS3 about £300-400. You don't need a HDTV to get great graphics on PS3, so with two games for each console (£50 on PS3, £40 on Rev), the prices are about £230 vs £400-500. See, you don't need daft, over the top arguments to show an obvious price difference.

I like how he included a HD TV for the PS3 owner but didn't include a TV at all for the Revolution.. I guess it's a magic system.
Anyway this argument that there is no noticeable different between a Revolution and a PS3 on a standard definition television is getting FUCKING old.
Seriously.. a PS3 can render much deeper environments with more moving things, varied textures, deeper sounds and so much more.
If you think that a Revolution can handle the tracks and all the cars and damage that Gran Turismo Vision can do you are seriously misinformed.
The Revolution is not a wonder machine.. sure to the naked eye the PS3 will have a handicap on a SD TV but you're really deluding yourself if you think they will perform in the same way and hold up the same kind of environments you're mistaken.
Jordan
15-04-2006, 08:40 PM
Not really, the only reason the thing has so much power is to pull off High Defintion.
Since the Revolution lacks this capability, there is simply no need for all that power. Yet it can still as we've seen from RedSteel pull off resonably good graphics in my book.
I guess we shall have to wait and see.

WRONGGG !!!
I cant remember paying £60 for a 360 game at launch
and games are not just about graphics, there is a whole lot of other stuff, the ps3 will be able to handle more stuff on the screen then the rev can
so you wont need a HD-TV to get the full out of a ps3

Standard TV's will limit the PS3's power but you can still tell a difference between the PS3 and the Rev because of it's power and when you see the PS3 on HD will be a huge bonus and look good.

I did feel stupid for not explaining in more words in terms of what i ment as when I re-read what i typed, it did look like what i was saying was "PS3 will sell cause of kids not caring about costs" not adding the facts it will sell due to loyality of the playstation franchise.

Part of me wants it to be expensive just so Sony can learn the leason. But at the same time the Playstation has brought welcome competition to the market.
I agree with the parent thing btw. I would only ever get a console for a birthday or Christmas and I would often have to contribute to the cost of that even it up. Can't believe parents just buy their kid a PS2 because they give in. It's a lot of money.
