Nintendo kept this very quiet indeed:

Nice. To be honest, if I wanted *another* GBA I'd prefer this to the Micro. I like to be able to see what I'm doing. Already got 2 SPs, a regular GBA and a GB Player for Cube though, so I'll pass ;)

Nintendo seens to be covering all bases. It certainly won't harm the Micro's sales

It won't affect the GBA Micro, the backlight feature was only one good thing, the other thing is that is good about it is that it is MICRO! Hense it's name.

Well this certainly came from no where! and there already boxes with it on!
Don't see it effecting sales of the Micro; could and should help lift the sales of the GBASP though.
Good one Nintendo, nice to see you are always upping your game in all areas!

It probably won't effect sales but I'd rather have a SP than a Micro.

I want one of these. Why, a few months ago I lost my SP, before the DS came out. But now I feel that these new features warrant a re-purchase, and its smaller and nicer to play GBA games on than a DS is, and it allows me to play my currently useless GB/C games.
I might import one from the US to save money, even if they do come out here...

They're probably just making all GBA SPs like this now. It's not like you NEED to buy this, but people who think micro is too small can buy this one and it has high quality screen. Like 1up king said, Nintendo are covering all the bases.

I agree.
Mind you my opinion will probably change once I see the Micro in the flesh. As it stands though from just seeing pics online the screen looks too small.
Anyway, It's unlikely I'll be getting either as I already have a GBA, GBASP, Game Boy Player and NDS and now that I've got Warioware: Twisted, Mario Tennis is the last GBA game I'm interested in so it's not really worth it.

I thin kthe gba could of got less popular with the ds but nintendo have done well too keep its sales going, I think its a great idea to sell both, micro, and sp, because then people will just beable to choose which they prefer and should help boost the gba sales loads. Well done ninty, they are hanging on to the handheld market!

The SP screen is perfectly fine now it has this super light in. I don't think I want the screen any smaller than it already is.

The micro seems better to me because it is small and can fit into your pocket (the sp was too big for your pocket). But I already have a ds so I don't need one

That brightness is fantastic. The SP was sidelighted, so it was bound to be slightly dark and washed out.

Nintendo was surreptitious about releasing the SP with a blacklight. I mean, had they revealed it, people may have chose the SP instead because it now has a better light than the original SP. But Nintendo didn't reveal it, but snuck it into the market, so it won't have any affect on the Micro; not in America anyway. In America, the Micro, at least the bulk of its sales, will happen next week. EBGames and Wal-Mart seem to have their shipments next week, the 26th, so I can assume that no one big shopping department has them yet. So my Micro reservation at Amazon.com may be shipped this Monday!

Hey! Calling all SP owners! Let's buy this just because it has a brighter screen! I mean, the other backlit was good enough, I could see it fine, so what's the point of gettng a BRIGHTER one?

Nintendo are not saying, "wow it's now backlit instead of sidelit so you have to buy another one", they're simply making the product better for all those who haven't already puurchased one!

The SP probably goes down as one of the greatest handhelds purely for design. Now that it is properly backlit...there really is not a lot wrong with it.
Is this the one that lacks a headphone jack though? That was the only flaw for most people.
