It's early days. The forum ONLY just launched, and the server is probably quite clogged with registrations. I'm told we've had around 87 members in 38 minutes. Don't be too surprised if things go bang in a little while. Teething problems that will be ironed out with age.

Stop worrying about it, I've gotten the same message numerous times. A simple refresh will amend the issue.

Ashley

Yeah the server is being banged around at the moment. We apparently had 110 users online at one point. I think Tim mentioned that we've had nearly 4000 connections and that was a while ago.

After a few days the rush will settle down and it'll be fine.

I'm curious as to what this "group membership" thing in my profiles entails. Would someone be able to enlighten me?

Lammie

You can set up groups (a la' clans etc) sorta like CE Elite and add people to them. Groups can have custom assigned permissions and so on.

I think.

For example boards that only certain groups can see, for example the Elites, monkeys, or l33ts :p

Well, i wouldn't say that "we are allowed to swear", because you can definitely post without the need to swear. Although, i won't be banning anyone if they swear once or twice. If they just spam and use swear words far too much, then i will be on their case.

Personally tho, i don't think anyone has got anything to worry about on that front. The language is mostly clean, so far. :)

Just as long as I can swear once in a while I'm OK. Anyway, what's that blue icon near the join date that says "*username* is on a distinguished road"?

Ashley
16-09-2005, 04:27 PM
You can use "reasonable" swear words, the kind your mother may not worry too much about. Just be polite, we all swear at times (despite what my ex-manager wished to believe) but no need to get swear happy.

The blue thing relates to Karma (read seperate Rules thread). The more karma poitns you get the more squares you get.

Cheers. Jordan told me it was how many people had reported "bad posts" about you. I've been beating myself up about it for the last hour cos i thought i was unloved.

Um, as far as i know, it wasn't possible to remove the post counts. We've removed them off the forum pages, but you can still see the count in your profile. I think there wasn't a way around that.

They should totally increase the profile picture size (dimensions) I posted a thread solely about this but I didn't want to start arguments. Needless to say someone should check it out and fix it (Because it's mathematically nonsensical).

People who gave negative rep points may wish to remain anonymous though. Perhaps people should just leave their names in the comment section.

Made a gender field. New members will need to fill it in, but for all those who have already joint will need to edit it through the control panel. Quite why the font is bigger im not sure, I'll try and check it out.

You can see who gave you Karma points in your CP. I think normal members couldnt before (but I could as im an admin) but I think I've changed it. If someone can check for me that'd be great. Working on making them show up on the particular post.

Keep throwing questions/suggestions at me and I'll keep trying.

The font size im still working on.

Goon Face, did you mean you can't see who gave who reputation? So you can't see who gave Owario reputation say?

Think ive found a hack so the reputation comments appear on that post in a seperate box. But I need Tim (who owns the license) to sort all that out.

Oh and the 10 points Ive seen about that. Dont think each comment = 1 point say. Will look into it. It could be because members need at least 30 posts before reputation comments count. May lower it slightly but too low and we could get spammy noobs messing with the system.

I think be able to see that far into the reputation game is juxtaposed to privacy invasion. I don't want people knowing who I'm having e-sex with.

Ashley
17-09-2005, 03:43 PM
Made the two fonts smaller. Still looking into reputation points and how they work, cause Athriller has 11 points somehow.

Problem is im not the one who bought this vB so I can't ask at the vB help forums, just simply hope someone else has. That and rely on my past experience with vB so some things may take a while.

Actually just found this by an admin at vB forums. "but reputation comments are not visible for everyone on the forum." which I think means one user cannot see another users reputation. However if issues arise where you think people are abusing this system admins can check whos giving what. Ill add it to the Karma FAQ so people know what to do.

Hmm Lammie seems to know better than me:

The thing with reputation points at the moment is that they take ages build up because everyone is new and has hardly any posts so no one has much reputation power (more posts, length of time that you've been registered, being an admin or mod, etc all increase how much rep points you can give someone).

So basically the more you post (no spam!) and stick around the more points you will give others. So members with less than 25 (changed it) posts don't give any points, but a member who has been here for three years and has 6,000 posts (which isn't possible at the mo I know) will give many more points (lets say 20 but thats just at eg)

Mr_Odwin

Can you change the number of threads (not posts) shown per forum board? (So that threads don't fall off the first page so quickly.) When there are a lot of active threads it's a bit annoying having to go to the second page.

Thats not your gender though. Max char input is 6, so work within the limits :P

Yeah I bought that up here: http://www.revo-europe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44

If you feel members are abusing this system, so if you suddenly notice someone has 200 more reputation points than the day before say, please forward your concern to an admin. They can check who gave whom reputation and if they feel that it is being abused the points will be taken away and any needed disciplinary approaches will be taken.

A member's reputation points can be changed by an admin, so it is fixable.

Upped the threads per page to 30.

Ah right. I propose you up the char input for people who happen to be Trans-gender then (not for me).

Mr_Odwin

There's this weird thing where I go into a board and read all the threads with new posts in, so all boldness is gone. Then I go to the Forum index via the link at the top left and the board will then indicate that there are new posts on the board I've just been in (rules let's say), I go back into rules and there aren't actually any new posts, no bolded up threads.
It's really annoying me.

If its used correctly though it will be a good thing. A big post count didnt necessarily mean you were a good poster. A big rep number though should mean you are a useful and valued poster.

Mr_Oldwin it could be because the new/no new image is cached or something. Ill check into it though, although its stumping me a bit.

Questions re: The ignore function.

If I add someone to my ignore list does that simply mean posts by them won't show up for me?

Will I still be able to see a thread created by them but only lacking their posts?

I just added someone to my ignore list to check. Basically, you can see them create a thread, but you cannot view their posts.
I'm not sure if they will know if you have ignored them. At a guess, they probably will not know.

Adding someone to your buddy list doesn't do that much. However, if you open your buddy list, it will indicate if your buddies are online or not. Quite useful. You also have an option to PM them.
This is very useful for us staff members because we can easily see if an admin, mod or staff is online or not quickly.

Tphi it may not have worked before because I changed the option for registered users and mods but not site staff, my bad! And im even a staff member, silly me.

Anyway yes you have to "spread the love" to others, its a preventative measure to stop friends karmatising each other. Think you have to do it to 15 or 20 people, can't remember what I set it as.

Moria I honestly don't know if it'll reappear. Maybe in retrospect we should have waited a week and then turned on the Karma feature but ah well. Post some more (no spam :P) and then karma people is my best advice.

How can you make groups, it tells you in your profile if your a member of any public groups, how do you make em.

Ashley
18-09-2005, 10:23 PM
My immediate thought would be it means groups such as Admins, Site Staff etc which is here: http://www.revo-europe.com/forum/showgroups.php

But then it doesnt say im in any groups on my profile, when I should be in two. Ill delve further into it (tomorrow, beddy byes soon) but it could be that (but why they dont show up on view profile im not sure).

If it is we may allow users to form groups in the future but its something the staff'll have to talk about, to make sure people don't become too cliquey.

Bob and Shmotz: Yeah, the gender field will just end up being abused really. So, it's not going to really help determine who's male or female. Which is a bit crappy because that was what the field was intended for.
Cheapshot: It's been mentioned a few times in this thread. Try reading thru it, it's already been explained in depth. :heh:

on the end after your text.
(It has other uses too, check out my above img tags appearing as text.)

Yeah, but isn't that going to far to try and avoid a 10 character limit? I find it hard to believe that anyone could manage a post with less than 10 characters to be honest. o_O

What if someone asked you a yes or no question? You'd have to add some random bollocks to make up.

You see, for that post, i could have just typed in "no" and clicked post. That's if we didn't have the limit. But the limit is there to stop spamming and people just posting one word answers. It's a discussion forum, and yes or no answers don't encourage discussion.

EEVILMURRAY

That depends, the next person could post "why/not?" [Obviously have to add some bullshit to go over 10.] then the discussion can flow.

So this forum discriminates those who want their answers short and sweet! :(

I dunno, i think posting just one word is a bit 'cheap' really. Also, does anyone else find it annoying when just posts "wtf?" or "lol"? The point of the 10 character system is to get rid of posts like that.

Ashley

They have to post 25 times to give me rep' points? Why?

Its explained in this thread and in the Karma rules thread so this'll be brief: because otherwise someone could get a friend to make an account and just give them loads of karma. Its a preventative measure.

Ten characters is not much. Spell out initialisations or just detail something, eg "why=why do you fell that way?" or something. Posts which are "naturally" gonna be less than 10 characters should be rare anyway. Its like complaining that there will be short periods of times when we'll be down for upgrades and such. Its rare, deal with it :P

How about R-E Veteran for 1000+?

The problem with that is that we already have R-E veteran status, but that's for something completely different.

And Bowser: " Old Timer, Old Skooler, Been Around, Long-Serving, Old Hand, Accomplished, Senior, Fossil."

They all imply that the poster has been around for a long time, which is a bit misleading. A lot of people are on a 100 posts and the site has been up for a week. So, if they were to carry on with this, in 3 months time they would reach the 1000+ mark. And i dunno about anyone else, but i wouldn't class anyone with a 1000 posts as a senoir or anythig. Post count has really nothing to do with how long you've been on the site.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. We can change the "status" thingies around, but Ashley quickly rustled up with the existing ideas because we thought the whole "nintendo newbie" or "gold member" thing was a bit crappy. Anymore suggestions?

On my CP page it says I have 17 Rep points, there are 5 darkblue squares (with positive comments behind them) 1 red one cause Jordan hates me and 8 lighter blue ones that obviously did add up to the total.

So how come the other 5 didnt add to the total? Can they be added anyway?

I didnt moan..its just not right...I have here:

14 rep comments. one is negative (red), 8 were added (and blue) and 5 are not added (grey)

starting 10 - 1 +8 makes 17 still and then there should also be the 5

Theres actually 6 that didnt count now...at first I figured its cause its on the news treats and not on the forum treads but I didnt get the ones on the forum treads either...

About reputation points. I can't see what the big deal is. I think it's a good thing, but it shouldn't be taken too seriously. Yeah if you agree with somebody's post, or like something they've posted, then sure, give them good rep. If you don't like what they've posted give them bad rep. If somebody gives you bad or good rep unduely, then you should report it. That's how it should work.

Doesn't really bother me it's gone though, although it would be nice to see it working. I wouldn't mind some sort of public post count being displayed. It just gives you an idea of the most active users and things like that. Spammers should just be banned straight out, no chances. I think these sorts of trackers add to the experience of message boards.

+rep plz.

I completely agree you were in a lose-lose situation, I'm just saying if you guys think you're right you should stick with your decision rather than change things because a handfull of folks disagree. I'm sure you'd have found lots of folks sticking up for it had you given the debate a chance to open up and progress a little.

Personally I don't mind either way, so I don't care what you do with the rep thing, I can see the merits of arguments both for and against it.

Yo Ashley, I know it was supposed to be different. I still think a public post count would be good. I know it doesn't indicate whether you're a good poster or not, like the reputation point system should, but I still think a public post count should be displayed.

As for the rep point system, bring it back. If you guys think you can make it work, then do it. Perhaps you should set aside some time in the posting week to trawl through peoples' profiles looking for people who have taken advantage of the system. That way it would easily work.

Post counts dont cause spamming as such, but rather elitism. If we banned all the people who used their post count to measure they're quality/non-new-ness then we'd be out of a handful of members.

you're already advertising darkzero in your avatar, if you just remove it from your sig it'l be fine. sigs are too big already.you could though, put the darkzero bit at the top next to your username so it looked like a different tab.

We should have a new smilie set. See Something Awful for awesome smilies. Or the Trillian community.

More will be added but dang we've been open like 10 days, still ironing here. Not like crazy dancing banana smilies are that urgent anyway.

Sig char limit, ill think about it. But why dont you just make each picture (as in the photo itself) merged with the black box surrounding it, you could make that sig in four pics (and less). Just create a PSD that allows you to easily change the photo.

But I can't seem to find it now. Its not in the FAQ section, so where is it?

Can someone change the Tech Board description? And how about some non-Mac hating mods over there?

Ashley
15-10-2005, 06:04 PM
Whats wrong with the description? Mods are doing their job fine, I don't care if they hate macs or not when it comes to their opinions they are the same as every other member so you should treat them that way. Just cause they're mods doesn't mean they know better.

Mr_Odwin

I'm not bothered either way. I seriously didn't expect anything more than a lock and PM resulting from that thread. If the rep points did return, we'd need a better way of policing how they are used.

Oh yes, because Guy runs this forum doesn't he.

Actually, wouldn't be interesting to see what would have happened if we hadn't gotten rid of the system? Would you all still be complaining then? Would it still be abused?

Nah, I'm not too fussed either way. I just agree with you that it'd be interesting to see what the outcome might have been.

It got booted before any conclusions could be drawn IMO, that's all.

The reasons i saw were that it was being abused. Now, if i see something is being abused, i weigh up the options. The options i had were:

A: Carry on letting it be abused
B: Take it out and stop the "spam"

So, guess which one i chose. It's common sense really.

And i don't really see what other conclusions could be drawn. It would be hell to police such a system.

The3rdChildren
19-10-2005, 01:12 PM
It rewards people for good things. There could be a system for reporting abuse of the system if someone is asking for rep over Msn or something of the sort. It -was- just a more complex form of a post count, but with fine-tuning it would be viable once again.

Other forums use this system quite spectacularly. Plus now I lose the will to post silly Photoshops all over the place out of rep greed. I had to make positive rep points to chuck around, and Mr Odwin created it's sister negative rep.

I will have to use these instead, and they're rather difficult to tally. :(

Fierce_LiNk
19-10-2005, 01:14 PM
At the end of the day, it's only a message board/forum. We'll do spectacularly with or without it. :heh:

Mr_Odwin
19-10-2005, 04:27 PM
What did you like about it?

When I see something really good on the boards I don't like to post a LOL-type comment or that sort of thing, but with the rep you could show appreciation for others posts in just click without spamming up the boards. It can be done via PMs but that's more of a hassle.
The way that you could leave comments meant that it would be more personal. I think it would go towards building unity on the boards. I recieved rep from people that I've never sent PMs to or chatted with on msn. Now, I love them more than I used to.

The money yo, its too much to run on two diff servers. Xsorbit had its own server so thats why that happened. Ill try and dig into these crazy server issues but things fall apart sometimes, just happens.
