At my school over the last year there has been an upsurge in the amount of emo's there and some of my friends have turned emo (well 1).
Anyway having turned emo he has dyed his hair black and gelled it all. Fine
He then started writing abusive lyrics all over his exercise books. A little strange but fine I guess.
Then he started becoming more violent and I've noticed him hitting people without cause because it's 'fun'.
Now he's also started spitting at anybody who offends him (not me but some of my friends) which is totaly gross.
I now find myself trying to avoid him as much as possible. Has anyone else had this problem where they are?, I mean I don't have a problem with emo's as many are just nice guys but when some do this it's just sad (especially since I used to get on well with him) and I was wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this?

NAh, i used to hate emos, then i changed my ways. Figured it was a bit dumb, but that guy is taking it too far. But if you want to talk about violence there was (almost) a "moshers" vs chavs fight afters school so i just got the hell outta there.
I don't really get bad emos like that, just black gelled hair and that's it.

I once had a friend who turned gay. But we were the ones doing all the hitting and spitting at him. It was really sad he turned into a gay, because the girl who liked him killed herself with a coverless desktop fan. Our friend would draw sexually explicit pictures of men in animal suits having fights, I think. But neither of them seemed to be getting hurt, per say. It was like they were enjoying hurting each other in this bizarre manner.
These deviants and their silly games.
Of course I'm kidding. Your friend has been turned into what is commonly known as a prick. There isn't any known remedy for these pricks, except to ignore them and hope they go away. Anyone acting that way is clearly a bit strange.

emos tend to be pussies around here. They keep to themselves and cause no problems apart from a slight increase in AIDS.
Nah, they're assholes. They like to shit on everything.

Think it was, because Munky was generalising.
Anyway yes your friend may have turned into an emo, but coincidentilly hes also turned into an arse. They're not related. Theres plenty of nice emos. Plenty of emos who don't mope either. Had a few come into work today and they were happy and smiley, one even had quite cool hair. (I notice odd things).
Also changing the thread title, the posessive apostrophe is annoying me :p

You'll find with these life styles that most people that lead them are quite nice and there is no problem. Then you get the occasional arse that give the rest a bad name. Look at Straight Edge. Mostly pretty positive, then you get someone being a real idiot, getting the others a lot of hassle.
and no, I'm not.

Not a big fan of the emo movement, they're quite hypocritical.
They all act anti corporate, yet they wear converse who until recently have been owned by Nike.
Why are the converse found in so many movies including sin city and 2 fast 2 furious? Because Nike acquired them back in 2002 and started marketting them to a young audience.
Yet when these emo kids get out of university or college they will be working in offices part of the rat race they oh so opposed when they were emo.
The tattoos and shit they do to their body they will only regret at a later part in life.. I've always styled myself in things that are original and classic.
I don't feel I'm corporate, right now I'm wearing a cheap tesco hoody, tesco underwear, an all american apparel shirt (sweatshop free) and some volcom jeans.
I think there is so much emphasis on image these days people define themselves by it, they need to feel like they fit in. But come to think of it, if everyone was a 'non conformist' wouldn't we all be conforming?
Personally I think the music associated with emo/screamo is pretty piss poor too.
I would never date an emo however hot she was.. they're all so superficial. Many of them used to be goths.. and the fact that bands like Green Day change their image to target this market of emos coming out with songs like American idiot really makes me smile.

There are good and bad people in everything. Just because someone classifies themself as emo doesn't make them a bad person. A bad person is bad regardless of who or what they are. This kid is a classic example of a prick, who happens to be be "emo".
Sort of like how Ray Falling was a classic example of a **** who happened to be a ****. Oh wait... the two aren't similar at all. He was a **** though. I rest my case.

Same with the goths, punks and wannabe commies. "Its a fad" and all. Not all of them do, but then the ones that don't end up doing, well, not a great deal.

The c-word is censored because it is the vulgarist swearing word (and I've had this discussion with Piro, the majority of people don't like it).
As far as RF, I found him to be a nice person who never did anything wrong. He seemed to be bullied in my opinion. So he used n_n and such, people have worse habits. Such as the c-word :p

Theres this guy in my village (a mate) who turned emo and we basically take the piss out of him and have a laugh (with him and at him) like we did before he became emo.
Moral of the story they act the same but change their image so your mate could well have been a **** before he turned emo its just you didnt notice till the shock of his hair.

Its all a trend, i hate the emo's in my town, they slit their rists because their week long relationship with a girl ended..like what the hell is up with that?
Sure, im considered punk, but i aint against the corporations like all of the hippies, coz i know i'l need to rely on them when i work for em to give me wages.
Any way, the word emo is now mis-used. They say it means your emotional, but if you actually found the definition it means people who wear girls jeans. Yeah, that part is true but they missed a hell of alot in the dictionary.
I dont mind people taking on the emo look, but as soon as they say 'oh yeh! im defo emo', it annoys me. They arent, they just take on the trend.
Wait til the trend passes my friend.

Not 100% sure on the the accurate meaning of emo (think emo music stands for emotional punk?) yet you'll know one if you see one. They dress in black, dye their hair black and have a huge fringe that they use to cover part of their face.

Emos: As a general rule, are underdeveloped, malcontent bi sexuals who wear jeans too tight to be comfortable for both legs and genitals. Their hair is mostly short and spiked with a fringe that they gel to their forehead on one side. Say they are non-conformist despite conforming to the most regimented fad of all time. They self harm to be cool and look down on others despite being nothing more than an MTV facilitated clone.

Totally agree, but if they self harm to be cool in this town.. they are truely mistaken.
I asked an emo that i was talking to at some local gig why they slit their wrists.. he says 'Because we hate life'... ever heard of slitting your throat mate? Thought so. They pretend to be depressed for attention, dont give them any.

Not so much the image that bothers me, it's the whiney voices/ wanting to be unique by being like everyone else. The ones around here just wear make-up...very few have the black hair anymore; if they do it's all hilighted.
Most "emos" i see on the street or on msn are like "oh we are so emo it hurts" which just piss me off as up until a few months ago they were completely different and just jumped on to the newest big fad.
Some "emos" are great though, all hail Sophie Davis you rock girl. Replika you might know her, she comes from Newport too :heh:
As a rule of thumb, I don't have anything against it. It's fairly harmless, and certainly it's better for people to listen to mass produced guitar stuff than mass produced pop shite. But I draw the line at this **** I saw in Chambers the other night who takes it to be a fashion style rather than a choice of music. Hair dyed black and blonde streaked? Check. Used his mam's hair straighteners? Check. Studded belt not actually holding his trousers up? Check. Said trousers close to falling down? Check. Old punk band who he's never heard of on his t-shirt? Che-fucking-ck. I swear, if I'd asked him who The Damned were and got a response like "It's a slogan, isn't it", I'd have choked the fucker out of principle. Something's really fucking wrong when I walk past Topshop and see Ramones t-shirts in the window. Good Charlotte have a lot to answer for.

Now it sounds like to me that an emo is a somekind of mix of goth and punk...
But if someone slits their wrists it's usually a cry for help. And it sounds like this will just be passing phase in people. Don't expect them to act like that when they grow up (and if they do tell them to grow up ;) ). This just seems like the punk movement in the 70's to 80's.

If you were so emo, you wouldnt label yourself. If you payed attention to this topic, you'd notice there isnt a hate for emo's, but a hate for the trend of it. Its not a good thing to become a trend. And also, there isnt a dress code to be emo, because you guys usualy say your emo because its unique. Dress code and unique do NOT go together.
So please, shut up or read the goddam topic instead of having a fit at the first few posts. In a way, we are all being steriotypical. But I think most people are starting to think this whole threat is all about emo hate. I think the general meaning Ninty 182 was meaning was the the trend of it, and most people started to comment about their hatred for emos.

Not all emos slit their wrists, lets not forgot that. Plus a lot of "normal" people self harm at some point.
As far as tight jeans, they're okay. You get used to wearing them, no real discomfort I've found. Then again, I can't wear very tight jeans as I only have a 28" waist and they're hard enough to come by as it is. (Still say we need a chain of "Small and Skinny" stores)
And yes, lets not just come in here to bash emos with small minded opinions that probably do not originate from ourselves. I'd much prefer a "shitty depressing emo fag" as a friend than a small-minded arse.

Hell, you;re skinnier than me and I'm only 120lbs... Size 30 straight-leg jeans here although 28s would probaly fit. Wouldn't dare it though as enough guys grab my ass as it is...
On topic, most emos around here are really damn annoying, but some are alright people. Funny video (http://www.somethingdirectory.com/main_emo.htm) I found a while back. It was really funny at the time because it explained step by step what a friend of mine was doing.
Generally, people shouldn't be judging emos unless they can effectively evaluate their own lives/lifestyles and admit their own faults/ what influences their personality, dresscode, attitude, etc. Ex. "I'm a basement-dwelling loser on the school robotics team. As a passive agressive individual, I'm not an open person to strangers and tend to scare people away. My physical appearance isn't all too 'popular' and I throw on whatever makes people think "what the fuck?" - a shopcoat with "smalldude" on the back works well with sunglasses that supposedly make me look like John Lennon. Pieces of '1337' have entered my regular dialogue which often alters between English, Central Canadian, and Gaelic (sp?). I'm pretty comfortable with my sexuality and tend to hug random friends walking through the hallways at school. I take pride in the things I do, have zero luck with women, and have a self-demeaning sense of humour. Perhaps I've put too much effort in too many 'unique' things that happen to have altered myself, but I've found that they just become a part of everyday life and help define who I am. I'm a lazy s.o.b that'll end up living as a hermit in the middle of nowhere and happen to be a technology/computer addict". Much longer than expected, but you can probably tell that a lot of things are pretty weird, but they've all entered my daily life. Are emos the same? Perhaps the original ones, perhaps many weren't at first but now are, but that possibility should be open as not all of them are mimickers. Just a lifestyle, really.

C'mon. It's not like to be emo you have to be ignorantly abusive. Emo was supposed to be about the music. Then, in America, it became a style about 5 or 6 years ago. Fine. But it was never about this.

Personally, i think its interesting how these trends come about , you know but still i dont go around complaing about emos and other groups and hurling abuse at them. if theyre happy with themselves thats all that matters-just leave them alone. anyway i find emos quite cute lol. Usualy when theres a trend around, you have to make the effort to fit in. You've got the original emo's, kewl, unique. And you've got the trendy emo's, usualy dumbasses contradicting themselves by saying they are unique but are willing to change due to the trend.

Urgh, it isn't the "Emo culture" that's to blame. Some guys just become an asshole. It just seems to happen to some people. For example, a couple of people I know has been on the "Emo" side of things for a while, but they are still perfectly nice, pretty cool, decent people. I another guy who I used to be very good friends with however (who is a massive anime' fan/obsessor - a veritible otaku) has been just a total ass to all around him, ever since he went to university. He's just an arogant, drunken, self centered prick now.

Best bet is to do what you're doing and stay away, though don't blame it on him becoming emo, it could just be some new people he hangs round with.

I don't know anyone who is 100% emo, but lots of people are always "depressed" and moaning about something. They're MSN nicks are always about them complaining about their lives with no reason! Damn it, I have a depression and you don't see me complaining about it.

In the locked emo thread someone thought emos were like moshers. They are NOT. Most of them dont really move at gigs. Watching them at Download was interesting. Moshers, as the name implies mosh.

I remember going to one gig where there was hundreds of emos standing round waiting for the doors to open and a fair few grungers and metallers were there too, then the biggest of the grungers raored "EMO's!!!!!!!!!!"
it seems to me that EMO is becoming like a fasion statement like the 9 year old slipknot "fans". i know too many that just use the term to use it as an excuse to experience teen angst and look so miserable that i just wanna grab their fringe and slam them into a lamp post, but thats my opinion. true many people do have problems in their lives, but theres always the Wannabes that give a bad name. Im a grunger, but i dont go around being a prick or slagging off other peoples tastes (apart from mabye some people sometimes due to personal reason, hypocritical eh?) all my friends have different tastes in music, i have never felt the desire to be part of a group or fit in with certain people because of musica, fashion or idealogical inclination

I wear jeans that are so tight that you can tell my religion...
But I'm not emo, they're in fashion! Or at least, they are in London.
Emo is too pretentious. I love depressing music, but it's all about sad folk. Nick Drake anyone?
One more thing, don't you love their MSN names?
- 'Her burning heart of autumn'
- 'Your love is homocide'
- 'War = </3 (Those are lyrics from a political song)
- 'Broken heart 'o' clock :('

This just proves my point that picking on Emo is the new picking on Goths. 3 years ago everyone would be saying 'look at these screenames, cheer up goth lolololol'

God! Could she be any more pretentious and elitest?
Also, if everyone calls bands such as My Chemical Romance etc emo, then they become emo, surely? I've never cared THAT much for genres.
What's quite funny is I quite like some of the band she mentioned as being 'real emo' thinking they were indie. Namely Mineral, Texas is the Reason and Sunny Day Real Estate. Oh well.
'Their sound won't be as harsh on your virgin ears' - Well I'm sorry we're not as cool as you.

found it looking for another vid. You can look for more there.
I wish my grass emo, then it would cut itself.

to add something, when I was 18, a friend of mine (16) went through a stage of being a jerk. he tried to immitate myself and another of my friends in an attempt to become more popular in the group, and he tried to put us down in order to pull himself up the ranks.
basic social ineptitude.
anyway, whenever he tried myself and the other mate he was trying to mimic showed him how it was done, in good humour, but also smacking him back down to the lower ranks.
I think he figured out pretty quick his tactics weren't working.
anyway, at the time he was suffering from insecurity.
however, end product, at 20 he now has a unique (really is unique) humour, and he's far more confident.
my advice would be give him space, either he'll learn, in which case he'll grow as a person and hopefully you will be good friends with him later in life when you have both matured.
worse case scenario, he'll not snap out of it, and get worse. either way, if you stick round him you'll get offended, possibly offend him, and most likely turn him into an enemy.
I've also done that, as it turns out we went from best mates, not good mates, enemies (for like 3 hours) arch enemies (not sure about him, but I actually wanted to kill him, and offered to meet up with him between our homes, where I was planning to beat him to death. I was slightly drunk on rage at the time :/)
but even that has miraculously turned back to us being close mates, to the point of me being best man at his upcoming wedding, which is very strange, the one man I have ever hated, and I'm actually going to be his best man. very strange.

CooInTheZoo is a good example of a "emo"

P.S Does anyone know if aerosol will catch fire when sprayed on a jhot radiator (or in my case, bathroom freshning spray)

No it wont catch fire. You need a flame. With the right equipment you can make a flame comparable to the batmobile.

This girl is a fool. You can disregard her entire point by saying "listen lady, expressions change".
A slap helps too.
There was probably a time, a year before it became popular, that "punk" was only a genre of music. Then it became a style, you could say "that guy is a punk". With her argument, you could say "erm punk is music how can he be music".
Geez the elitism of some people o_O I'm surprised she didn't claim she was there the day they came up with the term.

He's not an emo, just a f*ckwit.
I don't mind the emo fashion, sure it's horribly unoriginal, but at least it's better than chav (or Cowboy as we get here in Aus.). The bad thing about emo's is their f*cked up attitude about everything. Many of them seem to think they are absolutely 100% right when they diss out America every seven seconds and dribble poorly re-quoted second hand anti-corporate BS. Ok, I'll give you the time of day to hear your rant when you prove to me that you own no item of clothing that's been made in a sweatshop and when you stop hanging outside KFC which is part of one of the biggest corporate empires in the world. You effing fools.

Beh since Green Day remerged (or became mainstream whatever) every little thirteen year old who isn't a chav is against America for no reason. I'd rather be there than here to be honest with you.

I have nothing against the US, and find it almost laughable when poeple who no nothing of US (or uk) politics critise the us, for the way it is run.

I don't have anything major issues with usa as a country. But there are some companies which are from there and I have issues with. And there's of course the government of that country... But I have my doubts about the EU as well. And some european companies also e.g nestle.
This emo thing seems like a phase that most teenager go through. Being miserable etc. I think I had a phase like that few years back. I actually like the old green day better. Now it just seems silly when the guys in the band are so "old"
