*intended as a sister thread to cheapshot's*
for me, every console has at least provided some delights this generation. to start with dreamcast, powerstone, sonic adventure, rez and space channel 5 impressed me a lot, powerstone especially. over on gamecube there's been little to capture my imagination, although the pikmin series has been superb, so superb in fact that it caused me to buy the whole plushie set :) xbox's panzer dragoon orta and ps2's ico top off my list for my favourite game sthis generation. buying all the consoles has been tough on my wallet, but i've played some pretty amazing games, leaving me optimistic for next generation, especially with rare's comeback, and the increasingly plausible possibility of squenix going multi-platform :)
p.s) can we keep this thread friendly, there's no need to bash each other's tastes.

Personally, Halo 2 struck me as one of the best games. Sure, the single player was pretty poor, but the sheer brilliance of multiplayer (before all the modders and IP-Banners joined) was brlliant.
God Of War: PS2
GameCube:..... I don't know....

Half Life 2: Never liked the first one, but gave this one a try anyway. And Im glad I did, cause this is the best FPS Ive ever played.
And then theres SA and TWW.
SA was just one crazy experience. The story, characters, humor and the gameplay, it was all great. And its the game Ive spent most time with this gen.
TWW comes 2'nd after HL2.

For me, the game of the generation would have to be Knights of the Old Republic. The immense storyline, the force, the light side dark side dynamic, the twist. It was all good. I've finished it twice, and I'm still not bored. There's plenty of side quests, mini games and things to collect aswell, so you'd never run out of things to do. Definately the best game of the 21st century so far.
Honourable mentions to Timesplitters 2 and Super Smash Bros. Melee aswell, for their awesome multiplayer too. Also enjoyed Eternal Darkness and Burnout 3: Takedown, aswell.

In no particular order...
Half-Life 2 - taking a crowbar to a police state, superb vehicle sections (especially Water Hazard) and general excellence.
Metroid Prime - this generation's Ocarina of Time.
Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time - genius update of a classic (with the classic itself as an unlockable bonus!), great platforming and artistic style - and a perfect ending.
I'm sure I'll think of more. Paper Mario as well, Pikmin, Grand Theft Auto 3.

Resident Evil 4, Halo, Halo 2, Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack, Paper Mario 2, Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, San Andreas, Tales of Symphonia (in my opinion), Wario Ware series, The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash!!, Zelda Four Swords...
Those are just some of the great games I've played this generation, and games people will continue playing like classics of past generations. We've been pretty lucky this generation, although for the Nintendo players N64 era was better in some respects... unless you're a Metroid fan.

My most standout games this generation:
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Tales of Symphonia

Burnout series (all of em, classics!)
Fable
Star Ocean 3
Gitaroo Man

Tbh; I can't think of any games this generation that I've sat back from and thought 'wow;what an experience'.
If I had to choose though, it would fall between either Half-Life 2(PC) or GTA:San Andreas.
The latter purely for it's freedom and size, coupled with all together fun factor, and the former being because of its technical prowess, immersive atmosphere and brilliant gameplay.

Final Fantasy X really took me on a journey. SSBM was one of those games you kept going back to, even if you were the only player. Zelda WW was pretty darn magical..but i think FFX has been my fave so far.

I was loving it, and would still love it. If I didn't get XBL 2 weeks after I got it. I haven't played it since I got XBL. I've traded it in now because I never played it.

Resident Evil 4 definately, others worthy of mention are Skies of Arcadia Legends and Tales of Symphonia, but whats the bet that Twilight Princess will be at the top come May (or whenever the hell it's actually gonna be released ^_^ )

DC would be this generation, but died out too early IMO to be considered current-gen.
Anyway favourite games - Metroid Prime (Unbelievable game), Ninja Gaiden, Halo 2. I'm tempted to put Outrun 2 on here aswell although I've only had it for a month, but I'll be damned if I have played a more fun arcade racer this gen.

Metroid Prime, Halo and Fable really defined this generation (of consoles) for me.
[EDIT] Notable mentions: Timesplitters 2, Halo 2, Outrun 2, LOZ: The Wind Waker, Prince of Persia, Burnout and Mario Kart: Double Dash. XIII was good too. Everything! Just everything!

XBOX:
Halo 2 or Oddworld Strangers Wrath
GameCube:
Smash Bros Melee, Zelda, Mario and Metroid Prime 1.
PS2:
err... probably Zone of the Enders as its one of the only games i've ever played on it.

Well, depending if you class dreamcast as this generation or not. here is my list.
Dreamcast:
Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2, both amazing rpg's.
Gamecube:
Resident Evil 4, i diddn'tget very far in this but from what i played it was extremely good. Also Wind Waker i consider to be probably the 2nd best zelda game, and so one of the best games this generation.
Xbox:
Halo 1, for the amazing single player and all the laughs the multiplayer brought. It really revolutionised console fps in my opinion and halo 2 improved on the formula. Halo 2 still being the best console FPS around i think. The online mode in particular has been a big step forward.
Splinter Cell Series, very good stealth games. The online multiplayer alas is underplayed but i think its really good. The single player in number 3 is also extremely good and not something i'd seen before this generation. Quite unique.
PS2
I played GTA San Andreas on xbox but i think this game has to be one of the best of the generation, perhaps i'm a GTA whore but these games just keep getting better. Vice City deserves to be included in this list in its own right and GTA 3 was the one that actually took the big lead to 3d which worked so well.

Disgaea saw me putting over 400 hours of play into the game (3 times through... for the moment).
The Gran Turismo outings on the PS2 should also get an honorable mention as I like car racing games.
I suppose having completed a game (there have not been many) ought to count for something which would give us:
Xbox
Halo
Brute Force
Jade Empire
PS2
Phantom Brave
Makai Kingdom
If there are any more titles I have finished they are obviously nowhere near as memorable.

I've found this generation dissappointing. I was willing to fool myself for a few years, but I really was dissappointed on all fronts. I'm going on the game that has entertained me the most this generation, and that it Super Smash Bros. Melee or the Burnout games. There are plenty of good games, but most of them have just bored the pants off of me. I just hope I don't get the same treatment next gen.

I have only GC but I can name some great games which I have finished
Metroid Prime - no doubt the OoT of GC (I'm not sure if TP will be better or not)
TWW - I loved the cartoonish look and good controls
SSBM - I can play alone for hours and with my pals for days!
Other great games:
Halo 2
Resi 4
Burnout 3
This Generation (don't forget, the dreamcast is also included):
DC:
Sky's of Arcadia
Soul Calibur
NFL 2K1
Gamecube:
Metriod Prime
Resident Evil 4
Wind Waker
Super Smash Bros Melee
PC:
Hal-Life 2
Playstation 2:
Metal Gear Solid 2: Son's of Liberty
GTA III
Xbox:
Halo
Knights of the old Republican
Enigma
26-09-2005, 05:02 PM
Well, since I play GC far more then PS2 & since I´m not interested in Xbox, I will only post GC titles:
SSBM
Gotcha Force
Metroid Prime 1 & 2
Resident Evil (Remake, Zero, 4)
Tales of Symphonia
Baten Kaitos
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Mystic Heroes
(future: Zelda Twilight Princess)
I'd have to say Knights of the Old Republic. Perfect balance between freedom and linearity, with a great battle system, interesting story and excellent character development. The light side/dark side system was a stroke of genius, too, meaning you have to play it at least twice to get the whole story -- and you can still replay it again and do things differently. I love it.
Other notables - Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil remake, Golden Sun, The Wind Waker, Katamari Damacy
Bluejay

Devil May Cry 3
PC
Half Life 2

Shortlisted
Warhammer 40k Dawn of War(PC)
