View Full Version : The best console this generation.

With next-gen looming I thought now would be a good time to make a thread of which console this gen has been best overall.

You should say what you chose and why you chose it - please no flaming.

As much as I hate to say it; I'd have to say the PS2 because of Square-Enix mainly and the PS2's army of brilliant third-party games.

Well what do you guys and gals think?

I'd have to say Cube. And before everone laughs let em tell you why.

Because this generation, the Cube has given me some of the best games I ever played, I enjoyed it soo much (and still enjoy it even today) To me its been one hell of a ride and it was worth every cent.

Though I would have to say PS2 probably did better qua sales etc etc. But to me personally the Cube would be best. Cause if PS2 or Xbox had anything to offer me, then I would have gotten either of them instead of Cube.

So to me personal its Cube. But If there was liek an award or something it would probably go to PS2.

0_0 Actually the Cube made console of the year quite a few times, but I dont know how official that was n_n.

Its Square-Enix and 3rd party support tha makes PS2 good, IMO, Its Nintendo themselves that make the Cube good 0_0

Thats my opinion thanks n_n

It depends totally on what you mean exactly. If you're talking about best actual console looking at nothing else then only the xbox can win as it's the most powerful. Fact.
If you're including controller, console, games and everything in then I'd definitely go for the cube. It's had the most exciting, interesting and varied game exclusives this gen in my opinion.

Edit - dude sorry, didn't see you'd put in 'overall' at the top. Ignore the start bit of my post.

PS2 all the way; it has provided me with more play time than any of the other two.

I bought my GC first; enjoyed it for a couple of weeks, but only games to really catch my attention and stand out as must haves were Luigi's Mansion, REmake and resi 4, Wind Waker and possibly Metroid Prime. Other than that, the gaming line up on the GC has been very much lacklustre(imo). The GC hasn't been touched in months.

I owned an xbox for three weeks following the launch of Halo 2; overrated piece of FPS crap. The first was a lot better, but even that didn't live up to my expectations. Fable severely let me down, and the follow up to this was a quick sale through the bargain pages.

However, the PS2 is played at least once a week thanks to the greatest football series ever, PES. GTA 3, San Andreas and Vice City stand out as some of the best games of this generation(and before anyone says, but they're out on xbox-they were PS first so I class it as that) and warrant a brief killing spree every now and then, and squares RPG might has made it home to many a magic journey(KH, FFX) and the amazing .Hack series from bandai, which I am addicted to(anime, manga, games, OVA...you name it-i like it).

Xbox, because of their online service.

Xbox live really saved the Xbox huh?

Looks like the GameCube is pulling away here - it comes at a close second of my favorite current gen console.

Very hard. My opinion has swayed greatly over the years, it went:

Ps2 > GameCube > Xbox

GameCube > Xbox > Ps2

GameCube > Ps2 > Xbox

PS2 > GameCube > Xbox

And now:

Ps2> Xbox > GameCube

Xbox has Halo 2. Halo 2 and the Xbox have been my most worthwhile purchases this generation, so it gets my vote. Reluctantly.

I voted PS2, as tbh it has had the widest selection of games, a constant decent release schedule, and a free online service (although it's got nothing on xbox live).

I got my PS2 quite late into this generation, and I wished I had picked it up alot earlier so I would of had the time to sample some of the delights including Kingdom Hearts, the Socom series and FFX & X2 (got them two sitting next to my PS2 waiting to be played).

I just started playing Project Zero 2 lastnite aswell................very chilling game.

Xbox is clearly the correct answer.

It's a damn hard decision because each damn console has such a fine catalogue of games over the years.

While the Cube had my fave game of this generation so far (Resident Evil 4), I'd probably have to say PS2. It may be the weakest in power of the three but it has had the most game time from me and it has a fantastic 3rd party and 1st party support of games.

Katamari Damacy, Gitaroo Man, Ico, God Of War, Suikoden III, Devil May Cry, Disgaea, Metel Gear Solid 3, Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution are some of the games I've enjoyed over the years and there are still more coming.

We Love Katamari, Shadow of the Colossus, Soul Calibur 3, Fatal Frame III, Suikoden V, Suikoden Tactics, Okami, Final Fantasy XII. Things like this make me happy I bought a PS2 for Xmas in 2002.

Don't take it personally. 'Twas not a slur on your fine postage.

But yes, it is impossible for me to answer, as I can neither claim exclusive allegiance to one or shun another.

I would like to say this, though. Halo > Halo 2, as Halo 2 felt unfinished.

Try playing Halo 2, then go back to Halo CE and see what feels/looks unfinished. Halo 1's graphics are pathetic compared to Halo 2.

I voted for Gamecube. The PS2 I never really liked, and I was tempted to vote Xbox, but I was looking in blockbuster the other day to rent a game or two, and when I looked at the selection, bar one or two games, it wasn't really that good.

Gamecube, though, as remained consitant throughout the generation. It may have lost alot of 3rd party support, but it does have some pretty damn good exclusives, such as Metroid Prime 1&2, Super Mario Sunshine, SSBM, LoZ: Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, MK:DD etc. So I had no choice, really. GC it is.

Your point being? Yes, the graphics in Halo are inferior, but at least they loaded up when they needed to. This is especially evident in the cut-scenes Halo 2. It ruins the experience. Not only that, but the guns in Halo are far, far better than the guns in Halo 2.

Xbox Live has no real console competitor at the moment.

Halo 2 is excellent (more so than Halo).

As far as I recall as soon as everyone had a pistol they didn't bother with anything else.

Yes, they were unbalanced, but nowhere near as unbalanced as the guns in Halo 2. No one uses the pistols anymore, they're that crap, even the rifles are scarcely used. It's all about the Plasma Sword now, as that is a one-hit kill with the R button lunge attack.

That's a seriously unbalanced game right there.

GC to me no doubt about it, it has the biggest number of must have titles and it has Nintendo's games. Weak 3rd party support didn't affect me much as I don't care for most of the games they make. PS2 in a very distant second.

To choose a best console this generation is difficult.

Xbox is the best regarding online and customisation - Xbox Live is fantastic, and the Custom Soundtrack option is essential! I'd hate to be stuck with the PS2 version of Burnout 3 after hearing *that* music. *shudders* Teenager music.

PS2 is the best console for Japanese games. Gitaroo Man, Disgaea, Final Fantasy X, Star Ocean 3... fantastic!

Gamecube lets you play GBA games on the telly... that's pretty cool, I guess.

Yes.

I forgot about the Plasma Sword's boomerang feature where it can kill anyone that is more than a foot away from you.

In regards to the subject, the Gamecube has been my favourite console this generation due to the fact that Metroid Prime is on it.

The DS as it has opened up a whole new range of things, but for the home consoles, Gamecube!

Mainly because the amount of great games and fun I've had on the Cube compared ot my dimal and boring PS2 colleciton.

I chose Xbox even though I chose cube as my console and would do it again. The Xbox was the newcomer and dealt quite a hefty beating. It took online play and made it much better than anyone had ever experienced. It not only did that, but actually enforced the online service with great games like Halo 2 which never gets tiring (except shotguns on midship for 7 games in a row). Xbox owned this time.

Hey, no problem. I've just been *extremely* disappointed with Gamecube in total. I was really excited about it at first (I paid over £400 to import one in the Japanese launch week), but every single big game outside of Smash Bros and the RPGs like Symphonia and Arcadia has been a massive letdown for me. They wrecked Starfox (Lylat Wars being my favourite N64 game in history), Mario wasn't all that fun, I never liked Mario Kart anyway...

Meh, Gamecube just doesn't hit the spot for me, is all. Runs Sonic Mega Collection nicely, though. : :D

My PS2 is packed away, and has been for almost a year.. and the last title i bought for the GameCube was Killer 7, and before that, I can't remember. My xbox is still running strong with a lot of games I still have to play. Im just waiting for them to get cheaper. Also im in a period where i really like blowing stuff up and shooting things.. theres a lot more destruction going on on the xbox

Yes.

I forgot about the Plasma Sword's boomerang feature where it can kill anyone that is more than a foot away from you.

Whatever. Halo is better than Halo 2 in more ways than one, the Assault Rifle was an awesome weapon … the Battle Rifle is a bit meh, as are the SMGs. Even holding two at a time isn't as good as one Assault Rifle.

The Flood are cack in Halo 2, as well. They don't feel half as satisfying to kill as they did in Halo, but again, that probably boils down to the weapons. It was awesome to pick off distant parasites with the pistol, then when they bunched together, you'd get out the Assault Rifle and spray bullets at them pausing momentarily to smack the crap out of the ones that lunged at you. That felt so cool.

Another thing about Halo 2 that annoyed me is that you can't melee with one weapon without dropping the other one. What's that all about?

Oh, and Halo actually has an ending worthy of its gameplay.

Only just escaping the planet before it explodes? Yes, please! Halo 2 ends just as it's getting good. Of course, it means Halo 3 is going to be awesome, but Halo 2 was disappointing.

I still think it's a damn fine game, and that level with the tank on the bridge? Pure class.

I've voted for the gamecube, mainly because of the numerous meetups i had with friends and playing games like super smash bros.melee or f zero gx together. It's also because of single player games like Eternal Darkness and Killer 7 (both of which i rate so highly). Out of all the cube games i've got, i haven't felt disappointed with any of them so far. There's still more i need to get as well. :)

Gamecube gets my vote even though I thought long about giving my vote to the Playstation 2.

The Gamecube has great games (in my opinion more than the XBOX or PS2) and well the lack of online gaming is not that problematic because I normally only play Day of Defeat online (PC Only).

So Design, Power and Games are all won by the Cube in my ranking. Just to make sure nobody gets me wrong I know that the Cube is inferior to pure power compared with the XBOX but I think Nintendo did a better job in packing very powerfull components into a small case. Hardware design is much better whereas the XBOX is a "Shuttle PC".

Xbox, by far.

I started this generation as an avid nintendo fan who wouldn't touch another console with a barge pole. To this extent Microsoft have achieved alot by turning me into one of their hardcore fans.

The xbox did this for a number of reasons.

1) The Best Hardware, by and large xbox has the best looking games. It tend's to get the best versions of multi format releases and its exclusives to tend to beat the other consoles in terms of looks and features. I'm thinking of the hard disk in particular here. Which has brought alot.

The controller s is also my personal favoruite out of the consoles, though the xbox itself is probably the worst looking out of the bunch.

2) The Games, out of all the consoles xbox has provided me with the most play. Genre's i love are extremely well catered for on xbox, such as FPS and racing games. FPS was at one time the preserve of the n64, the gamecube has had a terrible selection of these and Halo 1, Halo 2, and the numerous stategic shooters from ubisoft have been the main pulling factor for me. Also racing is well catered for, pgr2, forza, burnout 3, etc.

3)Online, the biggest reason by far. Gamecube essentially does not offer this. This feature alone has meant i played the xbox about 10 times more than i would without. It has also provided alot of new experiances which i thought were lacking on gamecube (from the multiplayer perspective).

Basically, Multiplayer wise i think the xbox has destroyed the competition. Single player wise things are more even but xbox (depending on your taste) is still similar to the gamecube.

Gamecube's strong points for me would be some really great single player games like zelda, mario and metroid. Also pikmin.

I have to say the Cube. Nintendo are top for me simply because I actually find their games fun and i really WANT to buy and play them.

The other two have some good games too, and I don't dislike them (too much - I dislike all the consoles in some way), but the games just don't reach out and grab me like a lot of the "Only For Nintendo Gamecube" ones. Most of my games are "Only for"s!!

I do believe Nintendo do need to make sure there are pleanty of FPSs on the Rev, since they are a genre I enjoy but the Cube doesn't get enough (making it seem kiddy 2 the narrow minded). I also think it'd be cool because the new movement system is awsome for it!!

Eddage

I'd say dreamcast was this generation...

Nes - Master System
Snes - Mega Drive
N64 - Sega Staurn
Gamecube- Dreamcast

Also the fact that when the Playstation was released it was considered same generation as Dreamcast (was it not) and you can't change the rules half way through the game!

Anyway I vote for Gamecube, but then I don't have a PS2 (although I occasionly played my brothers but didn't enjoy it) or an Xbox, I do though half a Dreamcast (as you've probably guessed and so that comes in second!

I didn't vote for any of them. I was disapointed with all of the consoles this generation. The N64 v Playstation era was one of the greatest things gaming has ever seen. The 3D generation was young, yet games carried brilliance. The peak of video games was reached with O.o.T.

Maybe it's just we were just expecting so much after something so great. The majority of games are to obsessed with graphics, violence, sex, cut scenes and plot at the expense gameplay. Why was gameplay bad? Because it was exactly the same, just prettier. Maybe worse. Games were carbon copy's of games that came out five minutes prior. Sure we had some good games, but not enough.

The best console this generation?

GBA/DS - the GBA saved me from giving up on gaming. It didn't give a crap about graphics. Just pure gameplay. It was a breath of fresh air. DS is even better.

This generation has been like the calm before the storm. Hopefully we're in for a ride next generation. If it's not different i'm out for good.

Dreamcast is in an odd position.

Released before any of the 'current gen' consoles, and hardware production stopped in 2002 afaik. So really, to not be around for 3 years and to consider it current generation is stretching it a little :hmm:

Although it is 128 bit. Confusion reigns.

EDIT

Hardware production stopped in 2001, but Software prodcution continued up to 2004 (Puyo Puyo Fever). Even Trizeal was released for the DC in April of this year!

Although my favorite games of this generation have been primarily from Nintendo, the most fun I've had has been playing Halo2 on Xbox live. So I'd give the nod to the Xbox. "It's good to play together" is a very fitting motto.

I dunno, I found PS2 a lot better than the original. I know PSone started the whole mainstream and 3D markets, but I never really had any affection for it. I mean, yeah, the Final Fantasy titles on the machine stand out as some of my favourite games in history, and it certainly had a few other classics such as Suikoden and Ridge Racer Type 4, but I also never "got" games like MGS, Gran Turismo etc... most of the PSone's biggest and most acclaimed games did nothing for me, regardless of how pretty and sophisticated they were.

PS2 has been a total turnaround. It's drowning in quality titles like Gitaroo Man, FFX, Star Ocean 3, Gunbird, R Type etc...

GC is teh win! Well theres a suprise!

PS2 for me because it gives me everything I want. The GC has been so dissapointing and the Xbox offers nothing that intrests me much.

For me, Gamecube wins ive had the most fun with it , next up is Ps2 with its large range of great games especially RPGs. Last and far away is xbox which contains no worthwhile exclusives bar outrun2.

I've voted Xbox, basically because of Halo 2 and Live. If it wasn't for the joys of shooting people, it'd be Gamecube easily. And I don't even own a PS2..

Cube with ease for me.

Best pad meaning the third paty games are better - namely Winning Eleven :)

Also, Soul Calibur is one of my fave 3rd parties and the cube has Link in it.

And then theres Animal Crossing, Knga, Junglke Beat, Waverace (sooooo underrated), FZero, Mario ,Zelda, Prime, Rogue Leader, Pikmin etc etc.

Yeah, absolutely no contest for me.

No question here: Gamecube.

By far the best console of the three and here´s a few reasons:

SSBM
GOTCHA FORCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Metroid Prime 1 & 2
The best controller ever.

Well, you can consider the dreamcast in the same generation as ps2... but it seems wrong to compare it with the gc and xbox because by the time off their arrival the dc had bit the dust. It was more halfway between generations IMO.

The Gamecube and the Xbox are the only consoles this generation.

The PlayStation2 is just around as a throwback from the previous generation.

Although lest I forget, the GameCube had a hideous flaw: too little RAM. It shares this critical flaw with the Dreamcast. Naomi didn't have it, but the Dreamcast does.

RAM IS IMPORTANT.

Hmm? The GameCube ram is actually quite fast; faster than the PS2 anyway. The fact it's able to run a game as big as Zelda:TP proves this fact.

Domstercool
27-09-2005, 09:38 AM
It's fast but that doesn't make it any better if it hasn't got much.

Although PS2 hasn't got much but can still push some damn good stuff, just check God Of War, so it doesn't really matter this gen.

Cheapshot
27-09-2005, 09:40 AM
PS2 has 32mb ram.
GameCube has 40mb ram.

Not too shabby for a console made in 2001.

Domstercool
27-09-2005, 09:50 AM
GameCube has 24MB's of unified-standalone 1T-SRAM, along with 3MB's on-chip, and a supplemental 16MB's of SDRAM(AKA A-RAM("A" for Auxiliary))for a total of 43MB's.

Cheapshot
27-09-2005, 10:05 AM
I stand corrected, I didn't count on-chip memory when I saw the Cube's specs. Not that it means anything different.

I would have to go with the Ps2 .I mean the shear quntity of games realeased for it means that it will have very good games on it.
