From Ubisoft HQ. Now, before you become all excited, sadly I can not say much on what I heard and saw  . Now on the recent news that was revealed http://revolution.ign.com/articles/680/680793p1.html. During my visit I was actually present at a meeting held between IAS and Ubisoft execs, and lead designers, so I can confirm that it will come to the Revolution and use the controller's unique features. From early talk there will finally be a good TMNT game, the recent games have all sucked big time.
Titles in development for Revolution:
Splinter Cell 4 :yay: :awesome:
Killing Day :hmm:
Free Radical Project :awesome:  :yay:
TNMT :idea: ::shrug: :bouncy: :hmm:
Brothers in Arms  :hmm:
Exclusive FPS :woops:  This will be huge.
Exclusive title unknown genre  :wtf: I was told but they wouldn't reveal to me what genre it will be.
Some other info I found out on my visit that I can confirm: Reggie is to deliver some exciting news at D.I.C.E speech – While specs can’t compete, graphics can compare to 360 on regular TV – The Revolution does indeed use new methods for creating amazing looking graphics that can make you feel the specs are higher – The classic shell controller is final – Nintendo still undecided on what will be included with the system - As Merrick touch up on before other than downloading pass games, you will be able to download game demos, trailers, maybe some other things -

The DICE summit occurs in the second week of February.
Good to see Ubisoft supporting the Revolution. I mean, they didn't really neglect the GCN, but it's reassuring to see that they will continue to support Nintendo.

anyone else like to see Beyond Good and Evil become that Revolution exclusive from Ubisoft? ahhh... I loved that game!
I know they planned on it being a trilogy but put the idea on the back-burner due to poor sales. Maybe Nintendo will give them a hand and push the series as a Rev exclusive? ... wishful thinking maybe.

Everrything makes sense for me. Ubisoft reccently bought the Turtles license if I remember correct. Also the stuff about the hardware power is true - at least I heard nearly the same from a "friend" too :indeed:
If Splinter Cell 4 is really for Revolution it should be a launch title I guess because the time window is very small for that game. I mean I think it will come out 2006 and so does the Revolution in that case.

The classic shell controller is final
Did You see it? And if so does it looks a bit like IGN''s Mockup?
And I still personally hope that , the controller pack, exist from,
Handfree controller+Nunchacks+ Classic shell, at least I hope it for the adapters that don't have a gamecube., and for games that use the calssic controller + the motion sensors.

I started my job shortly after E3 04 freelancing as a video game industry insider/journalist through some contacts at NoA. Since then I have done work for several big game magazines along with several sites. Over the past 6 months I have recieced several offers from companies to work exclusivly for them. But I haven't accepted yet.
On the topic of launch titles right now I would say: 12-20 at launch date.
Ubisoft are planning 2-3 launch date, Nintendo will have 3-5 launch date.
My next trip will come in February to visit EA HQ then I have a visit in March with Activision.
Now I can't tell what the controller looks like exactly, even thought I did see it without the freehand controller though. It is what you expect for a classic controller. Also just to refresh some people who seem to have forgotten, when using the classic shell the freehand remote sensor movements are still possible. When Nintendo first showed developers the freehand remote then along with the nunchuc joystick attchments they was excited. But some told Nintendo that they must have some sort of traditional controller. So using what developers watned Nintendo went along and built a classic shell.
Also while I don't know what exactly Reggie will say at D.I.C.E speech here are some possiblities/hints that I have got from developers and NoA contacts.
Classic Shell
Final Name
Maybe narrow the release date down
Maybe some new info on games from Nintendo and other developers
And of course some more coded talk
Talking with members of Ubisoft and most think that the Revolution final name will be announced before E3. But some of these announcements will depend on whether NIntendo have any plans for GDC in March like last years.
I made a very small update to my first post.
mike-zim
12-01-2006, 03:48 PM
That seems like a rather lot to be announcing at 1 time. i recon the final name wont be announced till the GDC. they have to leave something big till then. any incling as to what the third revolutionary feature will be?

1 Do you know what the Free radical project will be like
2 Do you think(own opinion) the revo's graphics are comparable to the competition
3 What games should we anticipate for launch
4 Does the shell look even more comfy than the cube controller
5 Can you if u know give us clues about the 3rd revolutionary feature

1) Yes, but I can't go into details. But the action and gameplay is insane. I think it will be best on Revolution.
2) Yes. From what I saw Ubi's titles look better then all of the games out now for the 360. I think it will compete but maybe for the short run.
3) What games are you referring to? Are you talking about Ubi's titles or titles from everyone.
4) I held the classic shell in my hand and it's more comfortable then the cube's controller. But remember when I held it the classic shell didn't have the freehand control in it.
5) I don't know what the next Revolutionary feature is.

2) Are Resi5 and Sonic coming to Rev?
I would like to ask one more thing though, and its a bit drastic.
3) I know you said you don't know the other revolutionary feature but have you heard anything about steroscopic 3D being used in any way on the Revolution? Because those people in the film industry said it would be used on a videogames console in 2006...

I know you have a ton of questions here, but i am afraid i will have to add one (well two) more.

b) Bring Nintendo anywhere closer to the market leader they once was?

I don't know the name but developers have told me the Nintendo made the final decision on the name and they know it as well. And on the topic of something being leaked I just said that because I really think real info will leak out out soon.
I'm thinking if normal controller shell has to have the remote inserted, wouldn't it get really heavy ...

I may not be an industry insider, but all anyone can give is conjecture at this point.
It's tempting to look to the DS when predicting the Revolution's ability to widen the market, but I'd argue that they aren't as similar as focus on new input methods would imply. Whilst no doubt we will see console versions of titles such as Nintendogs and the Brain Training series, I believe that the DS' portability is one of its most attractive features to non-gamers: it's easy to play in short bursts, can be taken travelling/commuting, etcetera. The Revolution won't be so self-contained, and whilst I can see many people who might not normally play games joining in if it's on, I'd imagine they might not be so eager to switch it on of their own accord.
Having said that, the unit's intuitive controller might take the TV-operating public by storm; most thought that the release of the PSP would see the DS' success a brief one, and before that many deemed it a gimick. As nothing like the Revolution has ever been released, all we can really do is sit back and enjoy the ride.
A ride to the top? Nintendo back at number one? I can't answer those questions, but I can pose one of my own: does it matter? Nintendo will continue to make great games, we'll continue to buy them, and I think they've a good enough to noggin for business to come out the other side better off financially even if they do produce 'another GameCube'.
Whilst Sony and Microsoft clamour for the number one spot I can see Nintendo settling in to a comfortable second. For those of us willing to buy more than one console the Revolution is an obvious 'backup' to a 'pure gaming' machine such as the 360 or PS3, and its presumed lower price will ingratiate it with the less 'hardcore' demographic and families alike.
Nintendo might never be 'cool', but if that bothers you I think you picked the wrong hobby.
On to Demuwan: I believe that BigTac meant that upon release Nintendo's console will offer comparable graphics to that of the 360 and PS3, but in the long run those two machines' sheer horsepower allow for more graphical jiggery-pokery when developers really start to get to grips with things.
I imagine the Revolution will be similar to the GameCube in that developers will be able to chalk up acceptable graphics with relative ease due the provided development suite. Games will still look better over time, but the disparity won't be as obvious as that between PS2 launch-window and contemporary titles, for instance.
So yeah, that's all I had to say. Even though you didn't ask me to say it.

Pure gaming machine?... I agree with everything you said, and I know what you're trying to say, but a PlayStation or an Xbox are not pure gaming consoles, they are entertainment hubs.
A pure gaming console doesn't play DVDs out of the box, play music CDs out of the box, allow you to rip music to its harddrive, play that music over a title's soundtrack, browse the internet... That's more like a PC to me.

I know. Note the raised commas* as they distinguish the words which I'm referring to and those that I would myself use.
The 360 and PS3 are treading the same path that consoles have journeyed down for over 20 years, and some people now see this linear progression as synonymous with what makes games games. As such Nintendo can be seen as taking the 'gimmicky' route, whereas in fact they are simply taking a shortcut through uncharted territory. The DS is Nintendo's first step, and I would praise it as the most surefooted display of understanding of that which has made games so great whilst offering a sneak peak of what's to come.
(I know it was a simple misunderstanding and you know all this already, but sometimes you just have to run with overly long metaphors.)
*Well, apostrophes in this case, but how many people will notice the difference?

1) any news on a ppu or any advanced physics for the Revolution?
I honestly don't know any facts about any part of the specs(cpu, gpu, and ppu possibility included)
2) Does revolution use any really good force feedback which is something I think is essential?
Why this certainly would go hand-in-hand with the controller just like a ppu I don't know if Nintendo has something in mind. Some developers have mention about how the controller will react to in game movements.
3) Is there any chance of Skies of Arcadia II or Shenmue III on Rev? ..or what do you know about what Sega is developing that you can share with us?
I don't know much on what Sega is working on but I can say that Sonic will becoming to the Revolution. There is also talk that they are making an unique/different game.
4) Are Resi5 and Sonic coming to Rev?
I'm not sure on what Capcom have in store for the Revolution but I have heard that Capcom has heard Okami talk and has looked into that possibility. Also Shinji Mikami is working on at least one exclusive for the Revolution. As I said, Sonic is coming to the Revolution, whether it's the same title as the 360/PS3 is up in the air. But I have heard of Sega experimenting with using the freehand controller to control the speed and nunchuk joystick for the movement. Don't know how it turned out though.
5) Can the Revolution carve a new market for nintendo in the non gaming arena?
I don't think we will know until the time comes when the games hit shelves. Who know that the DS with titles like Nintendogs, Brain Training... would have made such a huge impact.

Thrust means to push forward with force. for example you can thrust a knife at someone. it can have sexual connotations to it as well.
I just want to know why everyone BELIEVES BigTac without even doubting. I'm eager to tell my friens about this, but I won't until I know he's not a fake.
The reason why most of us here believe BigTac here is probably that he isn't some blogger claiming that he works at Nintendo and claims he's making a game running billions of polygons at 188.6 fps. He hasn't praised the Revolution to be the winner of next gen already, and he hasn't said anything that couldn't be true (most things he said will be true whether he's 'real' or not).
I'm getting so desperate for some news, I'm willing to believe a forum poster. Tac has been around for a while, so there's no reason why he'd just throw away his reputation, so I'm pretty sure he isn't making this up. At least I hope not.

thanks BigTac now I'm quite hyped about some of that information... is next gen sonic is comming the console is not that inferior, and... Okami... I hope they really release it on revolution, I for one would buy it. No info about RE5 though?
anyway... *prays for okami to see a release in a nintendo console* I want that game!
:bouncy:
The reason why most of us here believe BigTac here is probably that he isn't some blogger claiming that he works at Nintendo and claims he's making a game running billions of polygons at 188.6 fps. He hasn't praised the Revolution to be the winner of next gen already, and he hasn't said anything that couldn't be true (most things he said will be true whether he's 'real' or not).
I'm getting so desperate for some news, I'm willing to believe a forum poster. Tac has been around for a while, so there's no reason why he'd just throw away his reputation, so I'm pretty sure he isn't making this up. At least I hope not.Indeed, I've had my doubts about him at first, but he makes it sound believable and he often says things like "I don't know more than that" which of course, sound true, after all he is not claiming to be some insider who knows everything.
Also he's a pretty nice guy, chatting with us and all, he's like a pal, his words might not be on the front page, but he posts them here in first hand, for us to discuss, for the sake of our comunity, if he wanted to be broadcasted he'd try another site/forum, even if it's was proven to be fake I wouldn't be mad at him because otherwise, because when he gives info, everything seems to liven up and start discussing. But I'm sure he isn't lying to us.
EDIT: also BigTac do you know if it's seeming like revolution will be able to run the unreal 3 engine, and if so, will it run? (like... will they port it over to it?)
Alright BigTac, I've been an avid reader and member of C-E and, well, I know and trust bigtac more than he knows/trusts me haha
Anyway, BigTac, hopefully you don't mind but I suppose its only to be expected, I also have a few questions :p
1. Do you know anything regarding the online part for Splinter Cell? A big reason why those games were so great on the Xbox was because the online spy vs. mercenary thing.
2. WTF is Killing Day? (lol, besides a FPS from Ubisoft, do we know anything else)
3. Is this Free Radical Project exclusive or just coming to the Revolution as well? (I'm guessing it's TS)
4. What can you find out about the exclusive FPS? Why will it be huge? As in huge game or huge as in amazing? Or both? and if you can, tell everyone why :p
Thanks a lot mate.
EDIT: also BigTac do you know if it's seeming like revolution will be able to run the unreal 3 engine, and if so, will it run? (like... will they port it over to it?)
Haven't Epic commented to that as a yes when they got the entire community over them after being fanboyish to the 360?
Also, they made comments UE3 'runs nicely' on a GeForce 6800, surely the Hollywood will be comparable to that?

So that's why I'm kinda worried... I'd like to know if they'll take the time and port Unreal Engine into revolution, that would grant, or at least permit some extra third party games comming to revolution.
As for Hollywood, I don't know what power to expect, since we have no numbers whatsoever... 8 to 12 highly optimized pipelines would be my guess though, as for the clocks... I don't have a clue.

pedrocasilva, it seems like this time you can't even compare the gpu to computer standards (Ati said so), and Bigtac said it will use THAT technology that everybody talked about.

pedrocasilva, it seems like this time you can't even compare the gpu to computer standards (Ati said so), and Bigtac said it will use THAT technology that everybody talked about. So did flipper, because it was made completly from ground for a console, but it did hold it's own next to a geforce 3, even if they don't want to... that comparation will be made even if it's like: PS3 and Xbox 360 can output Unreal 3 Engine and Revo can't.
It's important to be comparable even if build from the ground up. completly independent architecture means it's not a recycled chip or something scheduled to appear on PC market, I'd like to see how much power does that mean.
EDIT: I missed the comment where BigTac stated it would use what everyone talked about, does that mean it'll use that new/enhanced cube mapping, or the paralax mapping method used on unreal 3 that uses up a lot of memory in regular cards? (Only viable if only they could/would optimize it to use very little RAM for it...)

any news on the rumoured low memory?????, also anyone notice that ign revolution has gone quiet on the specs front, almost like a calm before the storm.

thats exactly what it is, because there will be such a storm of information only a few months away, no point in Nintendo releasing any info now to soften the hype.

IGN are quiet because there's not really much more for them to say. It seems we don't need to focus on the actual numbers so much now anyway, just the information that on a standard TV, the gap wont be all that vast, but when comparing HD games on the other consoles to Rev standard def, it'll be massive.

Thank you Big Tac you have really lit up my drab week and thank you very much for all the time you've taken to answer questions. i am reallly pumped up for the revolution and have many great ideas for the future. I will not try to ask another question (even though I really want to) but will take this opportunity to say Thank you.

Very, VERY scarey.
BigTac, were rumours accurate when stating that indeed the Revolution hardware had gone gold?
Nintendo never denied it, not even addressed it. But they did the Twilight Princess piece, although didn't deny it, and recently denied the DS redesign rumour.
Me thinks the Revolution is in pre production stages.
At this time of the year, that means a release is five to seven months down the track... In one territory or another...
Or, with a world wide release... Around October/November.

Guys I think we should limit(or stop for a mo) the amount of questions we ask. i know everyone has questions but we must remember that Big Tac is only human(I think :heh: ) and has an awful lot of questions to deal with already. I also think that more people should be saying thanx to Big Tac (apologies if you do that) but we must remember that Big tac doesn't have to do all this an because of this appreation is in order. Its just common manners thats all.

i take it u can talk about ur opinion, so do u think controller shell(without the remote in, i know) feels "right", and did it have more/less (u dont have to give a number) buttons than a GC pad?
PS thanks for all the infomation u have decided to share with us so far.( happy Demuan?)

Near final beta kits(final CPU, along with 85% completed GPU) started going out in early January. Final kits will start going out February. I haven't confirmed this yet with any developers. But I do know that from late December reports, Nintendo was expected too start sending out beta kits in January.

nope. he isnt human. he is a supercomputer developed by Nintendo (not the revolution. ha ha) that is connected to the forums, existing solely to give the occasional leak (/rumour) when things start to quiet down.

So do you know if the IGN specs were based on alpha or other earlier devkits? Because that'd be a relief.

That leak must have happened from a american studio... and we all know probably capcom, namco, konami and others had better dev packs for months, it costs a lot to go and change all the dev packs just for a near beta... I believe some of these studios only have the final version like... in february?

Big Tac one question for you
1 Do u know anything on the Revolutions multiplayer aspects. Iwata stated some E3's ago that the Revolution would use a form of displaying multiplayer that would better split-screen screen gaming. Also any news on WIFI aspects of the Revo. If developers will use its online features. How many players Revo can have online etc
Thank You
Ps expect to hear from u soon :bouncy:

That's completely up to the developer. Expect 8-player online Mario Kart, I hope we have 16 players for FPS's.

Wow...this is pretty cool stuff!!....So it's looking good so far then, especially if the graphics are 360 on a normal TV....And since the Rev is supposedly easy to develop for it'd be nice to see pleanty of ports this time round.
I'm hoping to get a Rev as soon as it comes out, depending on the price (and the number of great launch/almost launch games). This sounds really great thoguh and I really hope Nindendo get their fair share this generation.

I couldn’t stop myself from posting this. I’d like to tell you all we’ve received newer development kits a lot earlier than expected. These are pre-final development kits though. However they are an extreme improvement compared to the last one and include new prototypes of Hollywood and Broadway. I can conclude for sure now; don’t worry about the graphics, Nintendo will deliver again this generation! Not to mention Nintendo included amazing use full tools and a library of tech demo’s which are very use full in the progress to implant the third revolutionary feature in No End Soon.
Now from this point it became clear why two NOE's were invited. They showed a demonstration of serval other gameplay posibility's, including posibility's of the which I still like to call the "third Revolutionary feature". We knew this feature already and experienced it a few months ago already, however the current development kits didn't have this feature included yet. The final development kits we'll receive within 60 days will however include the feature. As you understand I'm not allowed into detail what this feature is.
60 days huh? That's somewhere in february. OMG
How the fuck could he have known this one month back already, if he's fake ??!! >_<

My point is that IGN got their info from the documentation - meaning that they perhaps put in the final plans even though the devkit wasn't that far in development. If the 'double Gekko' (~1 GHz is way too little for the CPU) rumour is definite, then it may become a bottleneck which I can't see Nintendo putting in. Triple the clock frequency (1455 MHz) with 1 MB L2 cache could cut it next gen (assuming the architecture would be identical).

Alright I see I made a mistake by saying that I was in a meeting between execs and leading designers for the upcoming TMNT(07) game. On the second day on my visit, IAS members met with some leading dsigners at Ubisoft who would be heading the project where they held a meeting to have early talks on the games direction. After that meeting took place I had the chance to talk with a couple designers on the movie and game. So it's my mistake misleading you guys to actually thinking I was in the private meeting.
No I have no connection with IGN.
I'm sorry but as of now I will not talk anymore about Ubisofts titles in development for the Revolution.
And yes Nick, I will be heading to EA HQ sometime in mid-february. Where I will get to see some of EA handy work including some plans/ideas for some of their franchises. Also, yes it's true that I am planning on joining a company and/or becoming part of a development team. Right now besides working, I am currently doing a Game Software Development course and I already have certificates in business and marketing.
Also I would just like to say that Nintendo has done a much better job this time around on locking up some exclusives. This based on dev costs, controller(new/unique gameplay), some money, and just helping out developers early on.

Maybe it's a $10 loss since the price drop.
I don't think they have ever made a loss on the DS but what I have heard/read is that the Nintendo DS produces the smallest marginal profit of any Nintendo console. Did that make any sense at all? lol :heh:
