It's a fugly looking thing, but I suppose you can't argue with it if you're still looking to pick up an Xbox for the first time. Stores will be paying you to take the old models away from them now though surely?

The same price... now... considering it includes a bigger HDD and WiFi then...
I dunno.
It could be justified in comparison to the XBox 360 as it is now.
But this thing is now being directly targeted at the Wii audience.
So... they now have to buy this (which is more expensive) PLUS the Kinect to match the Wii.
Also... no price announced for Kinect?
Retro_Link

Yeah, I'll prob get one of these, as I don't have a 360.
Just a bit of a shame it looks like someone sat on it!
Also... no price announced for Kinect?
According to the pre-conference talks, it seems that Microsoft haven't decided on a "Sell it as high as you can" or a "Get everyone to buy it" approach.

If it's really that much smaller I'll buy one, short on space under the TV and I'm kinda worried that the 360 is a bit too wedged in. Plus, my warranty ends at the end of the year.

maybe a spare for my bedroom! just depending on the price when it comes to the uk
My HDD recently died (so I'm back on 20GB) so a snazzier console seems like a good idea.

Why are people calling it the "Slim"? Xbox never referred to it as that... it is smaller both ways.
I wonder if you will get one if your Elite RRoDs...

I need my chunky 360. It gives the extra inche that my PS3 needs to stand on so the HDMI cable reaches my TV. :D

Yeah ReZ we get it. You don't use your 360 except as a stand for your PS3 so you can fit your dick in it. You can stop going on about it now.
I think it looks great. I would have picked one up if there was also a price drop. It is funny how it looks more like a PS3 (The older shiny one, not the ugly new one).

So I'm thinking Microsoft are waiting for a price-drop until Kinect is out.
Otherwise I don't see how the Wii audience will be bought with a £320 kit plus games.

That way they get all the geeks buying it for buying sake, and a price-drop for the casual audience.

The thing is though... there are some files that can't be copied or moved I thought? except in the instance of using a transfer kit.

Can't believe how ugly it looks. Good if they reduced the noise as Sony couldn't manage it with the Slim. It is quieter than the old PS3 but I can still hear it pretty clearly. There about 4 years too late on the built in wi-fi, better late than never I guess.
Oli1983uk

update to the Console details:
Touch sensitive on/off and eject buttons (like the PS3)
• "Much quieter"
• 250GB internal hard drive, which is still swappable.
• A custom Kinect port (not the standard USB port)
• There are five USB ports now, with three in the back and two in the front
• AV cable included, an HDMI and optical audio
• Different power supply
• External Xbox 360 hard drives and memory units are NOT compatible with the new Xbox
• Other accessories are
• Internal components that are changed: two small fans changed into one large fan for quieter operation, 45nm integrated CPU and GPU
The controller is slightly changed, with a chrome Xbox button, the Xbox logo on the back, and squared off shoulder buttons, which don't change gameplay but give it a more angular aesthetic feel. The angularity is also evident in the Xbox 360 itself, which Microsoft said that they updated to match the look of modern AV equipment, which are usually black and glossy and chrome.
To transfer your hard drive from your old console, you can either use a standard old 16GB USB drive and do it chunk by chunk, or you can use the old hard drive transfer cable (it works with the new internal hard drive). Also, you can now purchase that cable separately for $20, if you can find one to bum off of from your friends.
As for the hard drive, it's easily removable and is quite small—much smaller than the current external lump hard drive. You can't use this with older Xbox 360s, and you can't use older Xbox 360s' hard drives with this.
There is a Kinect-specific connector in the back, in addition to the 3 standard USB2 ports already there. The Kinect connector is just a USB port with more power, so you don't need a separate power supply like you would if you used Kinect with an older Xbox 360.

Hands-On: (http://www.destructoid.com/e3-10-unboxing-the-newly-redesigned-xbox-360-176398.phtml&mainnav=Top+stories)
When they say it's "whisper quiet," they're not kidding. Microsoft has moved from two smaller fans to one larger for what it says are "improved acoustics." When you turn the console on and it remains inactive or you're just browsing the menus, it's absolutely noiseless. Even with your ear right up to grill that cover's one of the console's fans, it's hardly noticeable.
Putting a disc in and letting it go to work is a slightly different story. It's unlikely most gamers will notice the disc noise in the hard drive, but if you listen close enough, you'll be able to hear it working a bit. But regardless, it's a huge leap forward from the previous iteration of the console, which often sounded like a jet taking off even when it was sitting idle.

The new Arcade SKU is coming in "late summer". (http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/06/14/microsoft-talks-new-arcade-xbox-sku-purple-boxes-and-transfer-kits.aspx)
XBOX 360 S ARCADE
In the U.S. we're going to clear out the current Elites and Arcades with a $50 price cut [$250 and $150 respectively]. This is basically the replacement for the Elite. We are going to have a replacement for the $199 Arcade. That'll be sometime in late summer.
WILL IT HAVE A HARD DRIVE?
We're not releasing all of the specs on it, but there will be a $199 version of this form factor.

Some gamer humour is awful.
I think it looks quite nice but it just doesn't seem small enough for my liking. After a redesign that was the most they could do with it? I guess it's more about the new features though. The real design test of this new iteration will be whether it can last more than 6 months or not.

Overall it's pretty disappointing to be honest. They're trying to pull in casual gamers and then they release a new console that looks like a miniaturised gaming pc from 1997.
I'll buy one as i want to try natal properly at home and my current 360 is broken, but it will definitely be hidden behind a cupboard.

Not sure I can quite justify £120 for a less noisy console. Will probably wait for a special dealio at work instead.
Definitely trading in my 20 GB 360. Is there any way to transfer my stuff though? I only have an 8 GB USB stick. Reckon that's alright?
How do I go about wiping everything off my 360? Is it easy?
I wonder if I can get anything for the Wi-Fi adapter too...

For save file and profiles? More then enough.
You can download all arcade games easily after putting your account on the new console.
Ah, cool. And is there a format 360 thing so I don't leave any details on my 360?
Aren't some saves locked? I still haven't completed Mass Effect 2.
Mundi

Not really seen any other way to format except the obvious way.
Have not heard about saves being locked, but I know that a lot of games have saves locked to the profile so the only way to access them is when your signed in.
Be sure to write down your serial number so you can sort out the license transfer.
Also, locked game (like Fable 2 and Mass Effect 2) saves can't be copied, but they can be moved (so it'll remove it from the HDD when you put it on the stick).
Oh, and it's completely impossible for the new model to get the RROD error...

Yeah, go to Memory Settings, and hover over the drive and press Y. It'll ask you for your console serial code, enter it and hit A and it'll go ahead and format it. I've done it countless times now at HMV/Game :heh:
Aren't some saves locked? I still haven't completed Mass Effect 2.
I havn't heard of this being the case, but I think if you use "Move" instead of "Copy" it'll be fine.
Definitely trading in my 20 GB 360. Is there any way to transfer my stuff though? I only have an 8 GB USB stick. Reckon that's alright?
I plan on using a transfer kit, alternatively you could store it online using Microsoft's Airdrive or whatever it is. Get the data on a USB stick, upload to the net, rinse and repeat til your hard drive is copied. Then just copy it right back!
I wonder if I can get anything for the Wi-Fi adapter too...
If you're looking for a decent amount for it, sell it nooow. Or at the very least before the new Xbox comes out. If I remember I'll find out how much you can trade it in for at GAME tomorrow. : peace:
I plan on using a transfer kit
But if you're trading it in then you won't have both consoles at the same time, which means you can't use the transfer kit.

Over here Gamestop has the adaptors listed as $40 and $50 (g/b and N respectively).
Which is as much as a 120GB HDD ($40).
I can get the slim down to 135-165(depending on if I swipe a 20GB HDD from a mostly broken 360 that isn't mine). Still a little steep, and the deal only goes into the second week of July. I'm not willing to pay quite that much just to get built-in wireless (my laptop handles it fine) and a quieter system.

I'm trying to decide whether to wait the couple of weeks and pick up the new model or just get an Elite to replace my broken 360. The price will go down no the Elite in a few weeks so there's some more incentive there to go that way and I'm not sure if the 3 year warranty for console failure will extend to this new model (doubt it).
There's also the issue of me transferring data from my 20Gb HDD to this new model as games like Mass Effect 2 and B:BC2 may throw up some issues when trying to transfer over the save files for them because of the one use code, although I'll still be using my current XBL account.
Not really sure to be honest. The fact that when running it's incredibly quiet would suggest the overheating issues that lead to the RRoD have been minimized, if not completely sorted. In no real hurry to get another 360 so I guess I'll have to think about this one. I'll just pass away the time while making the decision trying to get a refund for the 2 months of XBL I haven't been able to use because of the RRoD.

I'm somewhat tempted to get one, even though I really don't need one. The main attractions are the reduction in noise and larger HDD — I currently have a 60GB, but I have to keep uninstalling games — which would cost me around £80 if I bought one separately. This might seem a bit silly but I also really need a new controller as the analogues on my current ones have pretty much had it, my horse in RDR having a tendency to slowly meander off cliffs, so that would be another £20-30 'saved'.
Have GameStation's trade-in prices been brought in to parity with GAME's?

A more positive approach to when something breaks?
I couldn't afford to spend £200 for now, but I imagine if this version of the xbox doesn't have it's own series of issues that in the future I may buy one.

Tempted very much to trade in my current 360 and get one of these. Makes sense on a lot of levels - I need wireless, more memory, could do with a quieter console and I'm worried my console will break just after it's soon to be expired warranty runs out. It's looked a little jumpy already. Hmm. I have an elite console, but with only a 20GB hard drive. So that would be £140 it would likely cost me.
However, if I trade in my 20GB hard drive for £15 exchange at CEX, I can buy a 120GB hard drive for £25. Thus making the total spent £125, as the console would then be £100. So £125 for all that extra memory, wireless, a quieter console and essentially an extended warranty. Might have to wait until the end of July and that pay slip, but I think it would probably be worth it.

If it has internal wifi (the slim down version) then I'd be more likely to get it.
What I read was that the power symbol in the centre goes red in an error.
Yeah your right, what I heard was wrong then.
Apparently the New 360 will display a warning message and shut itself down to prevent it from over heating too much.

Yeah that's what I'd imagine it would be like as it says it will be geared towards Kinect too and I'm guessing they're going with the philosophy "casual users want Kinect and are less likely to use a lot of hard drive space"

See that's more likely to get me to buy one, the only reason I would prefer to change is for less noise, smaller system over all (as in asthetic size) and wifi, if I could trade in my console for a £100 it would make the cost a lot smaller.

Regular 60gb? I can't remember. I doubt I'd actually get £100 if I traded it in, but then I managed to get £150 for my wii, so you never know. :D
The new model is £119.99 with a trade in of a 60GB model at GAME. So that's an £80 trade-in.

lol same here mate! I currently have an Elite version which is only a couple of months old as my first 360 got the red rings.
However I have a 2 year warranty with my 360 and I'm thinking of making it die so the can give me the newer model as a replacement! Thats what GAME did for my Pro version of the console.....it broke and they gave me an Elite for no extra cost.

I've had mine since xmas 2009, I don't use it every day so I imagine I could be lucky enough to never force an rrod, but still.
Its just the wifi that attracts me, I do have a long cable to use which makes it a non-issue, but for convience it'd be a lot better, but I don't know if it's worth buying a new console just for the sake of not having a cable!
I'm sure lots of people will be selling the Xbox WiFi things pretty soon, possibly at a fairly cheap price, too.

It has no red light in the ring of light, so it can't RROD.
On a serious note, they've added a feature where the console will automatically shut down if it gets too hot, which should solve the heat-related problems.

Is it really true that the old transfer kit won't work as a means of transfering data from Elite to Slim?
Some guy in game told me that the 'new' transfer kits that they will coincidentally be selling on the same day as the console for £14.99 are the only ones that will do the job, which sounds like BS to me... can anyone confirm/deny this?
Bullshit, I'm pretty sure.

Hm well, that all circled around a tweet that GAME made, which after looking around doesn't really seem to have been backed up or confirmed anywhere.
Also on the GAME website, they are selling the transfer cable separately at £15. So I'm guessing it doesn't come bundled.
However it does seem possible to transfer everything over using 16GB USB devices. However that might include some things like Mass Effect saves (which you don't seem to be able to copy over).
The site also says Elite trade in is worth £80. A 'Super' Elite (250GB) is worth £100. That said, "Prices subject to change" can be found in the disclaimer.

RE: Trade-ins and data transfer:
-Data transfer kit is being sold seperately
-Our store in particular isn't doing instore data transfers but we have heard that some might be, so it's worth asking.
However; what we are doing (as are the majority of stores) is what Shorty mentioned a page back. Essentially the cash and instore credit trade-in prices will be the same for a couple of weeks. This means:
1. Buy your new Slim,
2. Get hold of a data transfer cable,
3. Go home, transfer data,
4. Return old 360 to store for monies.
Simples. :D
It's also worth mentioning that most stores (mine included) are doing midnight launches for the new Slim which seems ridiculous to me but hey ho. If your store had one for MW2 or other such titles chances are it'll be opening at midnight for the Slim.
In the case of my store, we are expecting to have enough stock to fill pre-orders and have a few surplus to sell on day of release. If you're buying it from GAME and you haven't pre-ordered, you're gonna need to get there as soon as the store opens if you want one based on the level of interest we've had. Conversely, the HMV I used to work for has a grand total of 2 pre-orders compared to our 60. Even the staff from there have pre-ordered at GAME, it's awesome :D

It depends when you pre-ordered, if you pre-ordered before the 1st of July then the trade-in price was £100 for the 120GB Elite, and you'll get that amount when trading it in for the Slim. If it was on or after the 1st of July then it's £80 you'll get for it. It's the same deal with the other consoles too, the 20GB Premium was £60 but went down to £50 and so on but if you preordered before 1/7 you'll get the higher trade-in price. :D

I can't see why not, or at least allow you to transfer it over in store. You only need that for non-transferrable saves anyway, right? The rest you can backup to USB stick.

Yeah but Mass Effect is one of those non-transferable saves. Also if I could save downloading hundreds of gigs of games and addons I would like to.
On the other hand, I could just play through Mass Effect again and do the redownload to save the cost of the transfer cable.
Any idea what saves are non-transferable?
Yeah but Mass Effect is one of those non-transferable saves.
I moved my Mass Effect 2 (and Fable 2 - another "protected" game save) onto a USB stick so I could move it to my other HDD. I think with the "non-transferable" ones you can move them (just not copy them).
Unfortunately this meant that when my bigger HDD failed I lost them (I managed to scrape my renegade playthough from ME2, but that's about it)

How would they stop you from copying the data on your USB stick once connected to your PC?
How would they stop you from copying the data on your USB stick once connected to your PC?
The USB stick is the same format as the 360's HDD, which would stop most people copying the data. You would need something like Xplorer360 to access the save file.

I'm justifying it thusly:
1. My elite's used up it's year's warranty.
2. I'm down to about 30/120GB HDD space, so I get double HDD updgrade.
3. Xbox is in great condition for a trade, but sometimes disc reading plays up. That wouldn't be noticeable during the trade though :heh:
4. Get shiny new controller.
5. Built in Wi-Fi, then I can sell my Wi-Fi adapter.
6. Quieter and more reliable system.
If I can get that for £90, I'm doin it.

That's actually very good and if it wasn't for my Elite being out of its extended three year warranty I would have considered just getting a bigger hard drive.
As it stand though the new Xbox makes sense for me because although my machine is out of warranty it still works meaning I can get a reasonable trade in on it once I've transferred everything over, the built-in wi-fi is a nice bonus and means I could also trade-in my two wireless adapters... or sell them... undecided yet.
Plus it is smaller, shinier, quieter and the extra USB ports should mean that I won't need to have a half-broken USB hub dangling off the front of my console... >.>

Yeah it will, the only difference with the 'old' and 'new' transfer cable is that the 'new' one doesn't come with the disc because it's not necessary anymore, the ability to auto-detect that you're using one must have been added in an update a good while ago because I recently did a transfer for someone using my kit and it asked if I wanted to transfer stuff when it was connected.
They do it via the same process on the new video which explains it all somewhere on XBL.

It's a LOT quieter...
And erm that's all I can really say about it for now... oh yeah and you get Peggle and Pinbal on top of Hexic on the HDD which is a nice bonus I guess. :)
*edit* if you allready have any of those arcade games it will ask you if you want to overwrite the one on the new Xbox with the one from your old HDD, I chose 'Yes' seeing as that's the one which is allready associated with my Gamertag but I suspect that it doesn't matter too much, just figured I'd mention it for anyone hoping to go off and leave the Xbox to transfer everything because it will pause the transfer until you tell it what to do at that point.
About halfway there in terms of transferred content now which has taken 20 mins so far, the whole process for a nearly full 120GB HDD would probably take 45 mins - 1 hour I'd have thought, I'm anticipating my transfer to take no loner than another 15 - 20 mins, it's really not that bad when you consider all that it has to move across.
Scratch what I said about the 'extra' arcade games, they're just demos lol.

Chart-tracks -
(http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=896&s=1111)
Microsoft’s new and improved, slimmer XBox 360 console, the XBox 360 250GB (or XBox 360 S) achieves the biggest launch in the UK for a “revised” home console, surpassing the launches of both PS2 Slim and PS3 Slim and recording over two days around the same as the original Xbox 360's launch sales total back in week 48 2005.
This is even more impressive when you take into account that the original Xbox 360 was launched across two versions (Pro and Core).
A great week for Microsoft is ensured with the format holder’s XB360 exclusive title ‘Crackdown 2’ holding on to top spot in the All Formats Chart for a second week. A 36% drop in sales is not enough for it to be caught by Ubisoft’s ‘Dance on Broadway’ (-9%), which climbs 2 places to No2, only around 800 units behind ‘Crackdown 2’. Lego Harry Potter’s spell on the charts is slowly wearing off as it drops one place to No3 (-31%), while another previous No1, ‘Red Dead Redemption’ (-19%) also slips one place, down to No4.
There is only one new entry this week, Disney’s ‘Toy Story 3’, new at No5, while the rest of the All Formats Top 10 all make way by each falling one place. Microsoft also benefit from retailer price promotions and bundling on ‘Alan Wake’ (+98%) that helps shoot it back up the Charts from No23 to No11. Another retailer promoted title, ‘Bioshock 2’ (+97%) enjoys a similar jump, up from No24 to No12.
