View Full Version : Cool equation

y = 2(x2+|x|-6)/(3(x2+|x|+2))±√(36-x)

I wonder if anyone will work it out...

one question : why?

I possibly could if I knew what ± meant.

Supergrunch

It means plus or minus.

Plus AND minus I think. You have to do it twice for every time you see that sign. Like with Standard Deviation...

So you'll have to add the last bit one time, then take it away the next time. 2 different anwsers.

What's that equation actually for? It doesn't actually look as hard when you write it out properly...

I possibly could if I knew what ± meant.

For example: √4 = ±2

So, back to dukkadukka's original point. Why? Is it the meaning of life? Do we reach enlightenment? Who made it?

I'll give you a clue: it's the equation of a graph- plot a table of values and sketch them.

plot a table of vlues and sketch them.

No.

Tried it, but alas I'm awful in advanced functions - especially absolute value although I don't think they were necessary in there as it can just be represented as "x" considering the sign before it was positive. Kudos to the person who does figure it out though as it's a very tricky problem.

one question : why?

Why are the rest of the threads in general? This makes more sense than a lot of the junk in there only it's not a "LOL" matter.

Well Grapher (OSX built-in program) doesn't like that equation - doesn't like the straight lines (and neither do I!).

I've actually just realised an error- this board won't support superscripts. Those "x2" things are x sqaureds...

sorry...

and here was me thinking you wrote 2x backwards :hmm: *has another go*

Put in x^2 to represent the exponent.

Eh? I turned this into a graph and got the following. I'm almost 100% sure this is correct.

You just want people to do your work for you.

I bet none of you can write an essay on the poem: The Night of the Scorpion.

We kept moaning at her so she made is do a few freeze frames/photo's of it instead. I didnt want to be photographed so firsti said i'd do a puppet show instead. but then the person with the puppets was off. So I put a blazer over my head and said I was a priest.

Believe me, it's not my work. If you don't believe me, I'll pm you with the answer.
