A surprise weekend update to the ESRB listings has revealed Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth will be coming to WiiWare.

Konami have recently done Rebirth games for Gradius and Contra, but a Castlevania game is a whole other beast. From the title it sounds like it might be a remake of Castlevania: The Adventure, which was the very first Gameboy Castlevania title back in 1989. It stayed very close to the NES design of Castlevania titles, but was known to be very slow.

The description from the ESRB states:

"This is a side-scrolling action game in which players battle against monsters in Dracula's castle. Players use a chained whip to fight their way through halls and dungeons filled with zombies, skeletons, flying eyeballs, and bats. The enemy creatures frequently shoot projectiles and attack players in hand-to-hand combat. If players sustain too much damage, they keel over and emit a burst of red blood. Some rooms in the castle also have spikes or spears stained with red, blood-like splotches."

We should hopefully hear more about this game soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

I'm more into Castlevania than Contra and Gradius so this is great news. :yay:

Interesting, I only played 1 Catlevania game on the DS: Order of Ecclesia, but I'm determined to get my hands on the other 2 Castlevania DS games.

Colour me a fan of the series:D

Excellent news indeed.

I picked up the Gradius and Contra Rebirths day one and this will be no exception... unless it gets reviews like the original version in which case I might have to pass (assuming it is a remake).

The Rebirth games have been resolutely old-school in approach so far and I don't think this is going to be any different.

So I think it's fairly safe to say that this title isn't going to be the in the Metroidvania mold as the DS games and if you go in expecting some like Ecclesia, you're going to be quite shocked.

Have you played any of the older Castlevania games or the PSP release?

Well I'm much more interested in this than the previous rebirth titles which I am yet to pick up, am eager to see details and screens.

Well basically, they are linear based action/platform games. There isn't an open world for you to explore just traditional levels with a start and a boss at the finish. And once you finish one level, you move onto the next. They are also traditionally much harder than the free roaming releases. Chi no Rondo and Dracula XX introduced branching paths to the series meaning you couldn't see all the levels in one play through but those were there last of the old style Castlevania (not counting Legends on the GB) but I doubt they'll be in this - there won't be enough levels to justify it.

Actually, given the linearity of some of Ecclesia areas, it might not seem too different in parts, you'll just be forced to move onto the next once you finish an area (where as in that game you have choice to carry on to the next or go back to an older level), but there will be nothing like Dracula's Castle.

You don't have a choice of main weapon either - you have to use the Vampire Killer (whip) but you do have sub weapons like the cross, axe and holy water (the original Adventure game didn't have any sub weapons though).

Super Castlevania IV would be well worth a download onto your VC, Fusedy. :hehe:

Indeed. That was probably my favourite CV before they went all Metroid on us.

Very very great news if true. Haven't gotten my hands on Gradius and Contra ReBirth yet, but planning on getting both. That's the old-school Konami that i love. Im an even bigger fan of Castlevania and really looking forward to some pre-SOTN style Castlevania game.

Castlevania: The adventure was one of the toughest game of the serie and of the GB catalog I can remember. Im curious what direction they'll take this game with. Still as slow moving as the original and still no sub-weapons? Maybe they'll stick with the CV4 style graphics? Anyway, cant wait for it!

Whilst it is a decent game, the PAL version feels awfully slow thanks to the then typical shoddy conversions (except you Rare ), though not being a fast game to begin with doesn't help - the DS games feel like Sonic the Hedgehog by comparison.

If you ever youtube it, just make sure you're watching the PAL version to get the best idea of how it would be for you.

So it's a 1000 points and comes out on the 27th of this month... in Japan at least.

Given this is likely to be the most popular of the Rebirth titles, I'd imagine the wait will be less than what we saw for the other two.

Just spotted this over at gonintendo. Just an observation but I wish Christopher (assuming this is definitely a remake) would move a little faster - something along the pace of Richter before he decided to sprint everywhere.

Hi everyone, I have a technical question which I hope some of you may be able to answer for me. I've just found out that this game is unavailable for download in NZ according to the Australian Nintendo Website. Poos to that I say! Anyway, is it possible to change the country setting in my Wii to Australia and then be able to download the game or is that a bad thing to do? Will my current crop of VC/Wiiware games which have all been downloaded become unusable? I fear something horrible like this could happen and will be irrevesable. I've spent quite a bit of dosh on my VC/Wiiware so don't really want to lose it. What are the possible implications of trying this out?

Does anyone here have experience with this sort of thing or tried it out? Also Contra Rebirth is unavailable aswell so I'd have to change my settings to a UK setting to get that game, as it's unavailable in Aussie also. Thanks heaps in advance for any advice, I really appreciate it. :)

Downloaded this just and played through the first level and yeah, it's pretty cool. I'm liking all the music remixes though they have been made to sound quite... how can I describe it... videogamey - it stills works though, especially thanks to the brighter colour palette on display.

The game is better than I expected.
The other Rebirth games, while enjoyable, felt like not much effort was put into them, and felt a bit uninspired.
Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth looks good, sounds good, plays great, and the level design, with it's branching paths, is very enjoyable. It's a worthy entry in the series.
