I read opinions, see the features, how long does it take to finish, if it has replay value and the company that makes the game is very important. I read reviews just to know what the game is about and possible problems, when it comes to scores I simply ignore them.

Assured quality, I.e made by Nintendo themselves, interesting subject matter, series continuity (I have owned every Starfox game since Starwing on SNES even though the last 2 were average at best) and recommendations by friends.

If it is a genre I like, if I have the console it is on, if it is said to be fun and fi it has got long replay value. I usually favor buying RPG games, but I also have a thing for 2d platformers ala Sonic.

Comparing reviews from different sources to see wether it got 'high' scores from different reviewers and reading more into aspects of the game by finding info online. Sometimes i impulse buy though if i think i would really like the game.

I look at the bad points about a game, then see if any of them would bother me, thats after seeing if its a genre i'm interested in of course. For example, I'd have bought Sonic DX if then frame rate wasn't a load of old wank.

I would have to say I buy certain games due to owning the rest of the series. This also applies to just about every game Nintendo themselves release.

Generally i look at reviews from the Big sites like Gamespot and IGN. Watch a few videos and see how the game plays. Also if there anything in it which would really annoy me, like, extremly hard unfitted to gamecube controller controls. Like when games get ported.

I base it on reviews however I'm picking out of the reviews what's important to me and not just buying everything that is over 80% and sometimes I watch video and picture and base my opinion on them.

Reviews/trusted opinions. Funness, multiplayerness (replayability) etc etc. I also seem to sway towards different companies: Nintendo, Capcom, Sega, Free Radical.
I rarely get games that score under 60% If I'm interested in a game and it gets 75%+ I'll almost definately get it.

A good game.Just see the reviews about it and if it's good i'll probably buy it but with a great preference of Nintendo games.But I also buy a worse game if it's a type of game I really like.

Depends, There’s only one type of game that I buy without reading anything about it - WWE games, I have near enough every WWE game since No Mercy.
Albeit pretty much every 'cube grappler sucked but meh....

Other than wrestling I usually base my decisions on recommendations, reviews stuff like that.

When looking for games, I tend to sort by genre first - RPGs and arcade racers get priority, whereas "crime" games and FPSes are at the bottom of my list.

I also look at who the developer is, what type of gameplay the game has, and what they've made before.

I'm very picky with my games these days.

if someone recommends a game here or anywhere i look at some pictures and videos of it, see how it plays look at the storyline, if i like it i buy it. some games are good like resident evil i like the look of it but i have no money for it :(

Everyone so far who has posted has a more sensible way to buy games than i do.........well i will not put myself down so much but sometimes i do go for games that have not been praised well......(Goldeneye: Rouge Agent....and others) and find out the hard way......it was not worth it...even if it was like 10+ quid down from its normal price.......andddd i am a sucker for sonic games, bought Shadow The Hedgehog and last year Sonic Heroes when both barely came out, full price......worth it? Sonic Heroes.......well lets say i do have my moments with it....Shadow The Hedgehog?...should of known something was not right about it.....that being guns and vehicles.

made by a good company, ie nintendo, capcom, ubisoft. looks fun to play with lots of replay value. review scores are nothing to me also hype is worthless. i usually buy games with well know charaters, do not know why.

and then price. although if i want the game (and i bought a lot at £60 on the n64) it would only be price of the cheapest shop, not price of the cheapest game of the type.


at one point i thought i would suck up all the games under £7 in the second had section i hadnt got, but i never did. nothing the cube has had has really made me want it, even for the price of a mcdonalds meal deal.


reviews do not always bother me. if they say "plays like a pig, bugs etc" then i wont buy. but if they are just slagging the game off because it wasnt polished or varied enough, well thats their opinion and not a problem with the game.

eg at the right price cel damage was great fun, it just was very much the same fun again and again.

while metroid prime, looked stunning, but bored the hell out of me.

so reviews alone, nor price = my reason to buy.

I buy games if they get good reviews, look like id enjoy them or if they cost a fiver. I would buy most games that are that price unless they are too bad to be true.

i never read reviews...
because people's opinions (which is what a review is) tend to vary a fair bit...
and after the whole "Sonic games on cube are crap/good" arguement, i tend to stay quite far away from them.
i mean, ive seen reviews of "Shadow the Hedgehog" getting in the 50's... but i love the game!

anyway, with that rant over... what makes me buy a game?

1. series
if i see a game with the word 'zelda' or 'starfox' in it... i will usually give it serious thought.

2. fun
i dont give a rats arse about graphics. as long as a game is fun, it will keep me happy for ages. an example of this is the mario tennis series. because i'll be honest, tennis can be a little boring at the best of times... but these games are amazing!

i cant make any neato topic headers anymore... but i will say that i will usually buy an rpg that comes out, and i dont like racing games or fighting games... (but funnily enough, im addicted to SSBM)

Company: I totally trust Ubisoft because they managed to make non stop high quality games for me and at this point in time I have most distrust in nintendo because they screwed me overwith the worst gamesin their series like: mario sunshine, mario kart double dash and zelda windwaker

replay value is the WORST thing to judge games on IMO, I don't ever play games with so called replay value because it's always something forced like scores or ranks.
I've played prince of persia games and mario 64 at least 10 times each but I've only played viewtiful joe once due to that cheap replay b*llsh*t, there's a lot more games like that ;)
