IGN.com (http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/976/976018p1.html) have the scoop on the Japanese launch of the Wii Video Channel.
Influenced by PSN Home, the channel is a virtual living room, where your Mii's mingle in real time. Want to watch a programme? Click on the tv, want to see what wares are being sold by Nintendo's marketing partners? Click the plant(?).
Due to launch in Japan on May 1, Iwata has previously indicated other territories later in 2009.

Sounds good. Hopefully it will give the wii a more of an 'community' feel when you go online rather than always feeling disconnected somewhat.

Maybe not.

This looks every bit as gimmicky as Home

I am gonna jump in early in here and bet there are people who decided Home was a waste of space who suddenly think now Nintendo are trying something similar will sing their praises for what it potentially brings to the table.

How is this anything like home besides the fact that you're in a virtual room with virtual characters that may or may not look like their real life creators? It looks like an interface to trick casuals into viewing adds? By the sounds of it, you can't customize the room or anything like that.

I'd say if anything it's influenced by Pokémon Channel :p

I think the fact its a virtual living room is influenced by Home. While Home has far more scope, I think similarities are going to be drawn. Its an interesting interface choice.

For my money, Home - and perhaps LBP- represents the only real innovation in the HD consoles so far.

I never gave a shit about Home and I don't care about the virtual aspect of this new Wii video service, the videos themselves however could be interesting, being as Nintendo themselves have said that they want to bring something different to the table in regard to video content.
So the video's could potentially be good but I doubt I would pay Wii points for them... so they had better either be free or something really fucking special. :heh:

In Japan, its a joint venture between Nintendo and an advertising agency. I think all content is free.
In the US and Europe, i can see it offering the free catch up tv services like iPlayer and ITVplayer.

But isn't it rumoured that the videos are to be instructional cooking lessons, etc.

Isn't home just a clone of Second Life though? I've never played it, correct me if I'm wrong.

It basically is, with even more advertising and more censorship!

*shrugs* No idea... but that's still something different to what 360 / PS3 offer in video form, not that all of this matters because most video's can be got on You Tube anyway... so even when it does hit it will just be another channel that is seldom used probably.

Surely we'll see the Pokémon series at the very least... :heh: Unless for some bizarre reason, Nintendo don't have the rights to the series?

I've only just fleetingly heard of second life, so no idea. It would've been nice to think it was something new- my dreams are shattered.

That would be truly hilarious. But what about Captain N, Super Mario Super Show? Surely essential viewing (for all the wrong reasons).
I'd still like our version to contain iPlayer and catch up tv services.

They should do that purely for the novelty of being able to view them on the Wii, then again you can always view them on YouTube... but still. :P

So will this make the Nintendo Channel useless?
Not that it isnt already a waste of space, getting 3 minute videos which take ages to load. Its like Nintendo haven't heard of Youtube.
I quite like the look of this new channel and I hope it makes it to the UK.
Imagine if it had all of the Pokemon series, oh it would be like a dream come true! =D
