If you have children, or if you do even, what would you call them?
I'm dead set on if I have a daughter to call her McKenna. If I have a son, I'm not sure anymore. Was going to be Jack, but everyone calls their son Jack now. *tut*
Middle name wise, I will pass on definitely my "Gavin" possibly my "Laurie" too, or maybe another one, but yeah definitely two middle names. :)
Hit me w/ or w/o rhythm stick. :)

A boy would be Jack or Tyler for me. Girls i'm not sure, i always liked Leona until you-know-who ruined it for me. I like Chloe though, but my girlfriend seems to think its a scally name. I've never known any scallies called Chloe but meh. I guess Jennifer is a good back-up.
I think I could get away with calling my son "Banjo". Calling my daughter "Kazooie" would be a bit too odd, though. I'd take the safe option: "Joanna".

I love the name "Ethan" - absolutely no clue why. So if I ever have a son, I'd probably call it either that or maybe "Will".
Girl? I have no clue. Ever since that "Kia" game on the PS2, I've loved the name...but it's too wierd to be used I think.

I have 2 little boys, one called: Harry Aaron John, Harry because we always liked the name, Aaron after me and John after his grandad on my missus side ^^
My second is called: Jacob Oliver, it was stupidly hard to pick a name for this boy! We thought it was going to be a girl so it took us forever to pick this :P Oliver is because i wanted to call him oliver but she hates it, we used it as a middle name as a compromise. Jacob because it was about the only name we both didnt hate, we now call him Jakey ^^
Our first was very nearly a Brogan because at the time we really liked it...... Very very pleased we decided on Harry now though!
And as we were expecting a girl as our second we had decided on Libby Patricia Libby because we loved the name and Patricia after my missus mum ^^

Hmmm... well seeing as my last name is awful and hard to match first names up with (seriously, having the surname Coyne sucks) I'm not sure. I was initially had the idea that if I were to have a l'il girl, I'd call her Jessica and for a boy perhaps Daniel. :shrugs: I'll sort it out proper when I get to the hurdle in life.

I've always had an idea of calling my son Francis Ronald, as those were the names of my grandfathers and it sounds like a pretty decent name.
I wouldn't have a Ross Jr, sounds a bit silly.
As for girls; don't really know. I'd probably go for more R's and have ones like Rachel or Rose or Rosanna.
Or, if I really wanted; I'd have Reiko, because I quite like that name, but I'd have to arrange it for the child to be born in Japan, or I marry a Japanese lass. There's no point in giving a child a Japanese name when they're not even Japanese. :blank:

That's assuming she doesn't marry out of her surname (or maybe she is married already :P)?
I like classic, not necessarily common names.
Chris, Ben, Arthur, Fred, Sophie, Ruth, names like that.
How many middles names? I think I'd just go for the one, any more is a bit excessive. One of my friends was called Victoria Elizabeth Rachael Mary. Bit much for form filling methinks!

For girls names, I'm kind of limited to what I can call her. The thing is, my surname starts with a vowel; to be more specific my starts with an 'eh' sound and the first three letters are 'ell', so I can't call her anything like michelle or belle; and I can't call her anything that ends with an 'a' because that just sounds silly when saying her whole name. That just leaves any name ending with an 'ee' sound. I suppose I've always like Connie.
And, if he's a bloke, Johnathan.

serious names for my kids? hum, i dunno, i dont want any of the celeb crap, like apple, or piky. its just bollocks, and crule to the child.
i guess id go for somthing traditional, james, pete, jason, i like issac for some reason.
for a girl sarah, ammanda, rebbeca, laura.
i doubt id bother with middle names. seem utterly pointless to me. never had one, probebly never will.

I guess it will depend on the surname, I have this notion that I want to keep my own name, but that'll probably go out the window. If I did go down the double barreled route (unlikely) I'd have to pick someone with a single sylabllic surname because mine has 3. Yes I shall be picking a husband based on their surname, ha. Tangent.
I like Molly (of course), Bella, Rose, Poppy, Lilly. I want something pretty but a little bit different. Boys names, hmm no idea at this moment.
Boy: Theo or Zak

See, I'd maybe do this but instead just go for 'A', 'B' and 'D'.
I just so happen to have a Collins Dictionary of First Names next to me(like actually just so happens), I bust it out(it's also not mine, and is older than me) at the xmas dinner when my aunt was here to look up the meanings of some names after the conversation turned that way. I decided on a few for my kids, but now I've forgot them :(
One thing this thread makes me realise too though, I'm not gonna like naming my kids the same as people I know, which means I need to find names of people I don't know which is a bit weird. I've always rather liked Sophie and Chloe, though I feel I'd be stealing my cousin's middle name with Sophie, and now I know a Chloe. Hmm...tough choices! For some reason I care less about boy's names. I think it's definitely a serious choice though, I've always wondered...how different would you life be if you had a different name!

I'd call them a mistake as I don't want kids.
Oh, alright then. Were I to name a child I'd probably go with something slightly unusual but not abstract; more Leo or Faye than, say, Orange or Lamp. A name that stands out a bit can be a huge advantage, but likewise you don't want a child's name to be constantly open to ridicule.

I hate it when my first name is just shortened to its letter (ie 'A') because then it sounds so impersonal. 'A Boyd'. Which may be offensive because I don't wish to be a Boyd.
Rambling aside.
I wish for a girl and want to call her Lilly. Three 'l's because it just looks better written down. I've already mentioned this to my mother and she approves so now all I need is a baby (my friend did offer a while ago...so if times are tight)
And even though I don't want a son I can think of many names I would like for a son...although only Seth and Tyler spring to mind.
Oh and I only wish for one child because it clearly makes more sense.

I am considering between two dilemmas. To give my kids really generic obvious names and hope they break from it and form their own way more due to the fact they're forced to(such as you might when you have a silly name like chris) or give them a ridiculously unique name that'd force them to be something in life. There's something about a weird name that does that, Prince being the most prominent example to spring to mind. Would he be who he was if he wasn't named Prince? I doubt it.
I might hit the middle ground some people have mentioned, and go for the more unique of first names...like Winston! Jamal! Elbert(dont think this is a name, but I want it to be)! Rupert! I could go on for ages!

My father was called John.
So? Maybe it's just me, but you only one chance to name a child, and people with interesting (not over the top) names are always assuemd to be more fun.
However, I can see it being done for sentimental reasons.
Even then, I wouldn't do it for that reason, unless asked to be someone who might have passed away. I quite like the name Jean, and it's my deceased grandma's name, but that's not why I would consider it.

I agree. Chair needs to choose a name that's Somewhere In Between. I AM aware the name of his Mother Stands For Comfort, but I'm against the same names as family members generally...hmm.

I'd prefer a joke twist on the ancestral names.
My Grandfather was called George, and I have a great uncle called Alexander and my dad named my younger sister Georgina Alexandrina after them.
And my dad's name is Alistair, and my youngest sister is called Alison.
And my oldest sister is named Sheelagh (technically a lovely twist on the well-known Sheila), named after some family member from ages ago - my dad's grandmother's sister or something. And then my other sister is called Helen(a), which was picked just because my parents loved the name/ Helen of Troy is lovely.

To be fair to everyone, Sheelagh is much older than Sheila, since it's like anciently Scottish/Celtic or something.
But yeah, I do love Melissa, the Littler Mermaid.

Thats what makes it postmodern though. Even though its older people will presume its a new take on it. Its ironic. And my point doesn't make much sense but im going to argue it anyway. So yeah, boo yah!
Anyway yes, im sticking with Lilly and Stosh (lol thats almost Lilo and Stitch!). Even though I am determined to just have one the other day the thought 'well, maybe 2 wouldn't be so bad as long as theres a few years between them' did cross my mind. Certainly at least five though.

Referring back to post a few pages back about the Latin "Amanda": Yes, it's quite correctly the Gerundive. I believe it could both be "she who must be loved" and "she who should be loved". I think "loveable" covers it well as far as I have understood the function of the Gerundive.
Oh, and Molly: Unfortunately, my surname isn't "Hugandkiss". My parents chose a more discreet surname for me, "Grabandfuck".
I jest, of course.
I like Theo (for a boy) and Cleo (a girl) too. Not sure I'd use both for both my children though, bit odd.
Going back to Shakespearean names I like; Claribel, Dido, Adrian, Sampson, Stephano (Or Stephan, but it would be pronounced as such, not "Steven", which ranks alongside "Dave" and "Mike" in terms of being no fun at all),, Tybalt.
For girls, Valentine, Phoebe, Iris, Hecate, Adriana and Cordelia.

I'd say so. In some form from someone; classmates, siblings, teachers, bosses. Everyone gets bullied.
So, you're basing it on what goes on in the workplace. Notice how you said classmates, teachers and bosses.
It depends what you see bullying as. Does it make you tougher? I wouldn't say that was a given, because it could have the opposite effect. It only makes you tougher if you can cope with it or take it.
Dannyboy-the-Dane
02-01-2009, 03:32 PM
That's just a direct lie. I've never been bullied in my life. People being nice to you could possibly make you "weak" in a sense, but I also believe it could make you "strong". It gives you confidence. I think it mainly depends on how aware you are of the realities of real life. If you think the world is a sweet and happy place, you're definitely in for an abrupt shock. But even though you've never been bullied, you can still be very aware of the world's harsh reality.
Besides, even if bullying is an inevitable part of life, why on earth make it easier for the bullies?

I guess it's a fair choice, but you have a responsibility of teaching your kid to cope with bullying.
There's a difference between teasing and bullying, though. Teasing is quite common and is rarely too serious. Bullying is continuous teasing directed at a single individual and can easily break a person mentally.

Funny you mention that, one of the kids I teach is called "Unique."
Also, I teach about 3 girls in one class with the name of Charlotte, and one called Charley. Drives me bluddy insane. "Charlotte! No...the other one....no...not you either!"
Although, sometimes the "plain" names are just nice and simple. Besides, all a name is is just something you refer to that person as. You could have an awesome name, but if it doesn't really "fit" the personality, then I guess it doesn't count for much. Just like if you had the name Jack but was the most popular kid in school. Although, I guess it would be easier to remember a "different name."

Whether or not everyone gets bullied is not a matter of opinion, now, is it? I'm stating from experience that I've never been bullied. Perhaps I'm the only one. But I'm the one keeping the statement "everyone gets bullied" from being true. I could of course experience it later in life.
Anyway, my point is just that while it is likely true that most people will go through tough periods in their lives and should be taught from childhood to cope with it, it's not necessarily good parenting to put them through tough times on purpose. But it's a question of how to raise kids, something I'm terrified of myself when I get to that point in life.

Oh right yes thats what I was trying to get at. Bullying happens in so many social situations and is so prevalent I find it hard to believe that everyone doesn't at some point suffer from it (although later downgrading it to 'teasing' of some degree...but with the term still somewhere between 'teasing' (ie my frequent insulting of Dan's face) and 'bullying' ie something which actually can upset).

Ahh, "downgrading" it to teasing. Would that still be seen as bullying? I think bullying has more to do with the effect. Like, I could say one thing to one person, and the exact same thing to another. One may see it as teasing, and the other might feel offended or hurt.

So if I said I was "funny internet person" would you tease me?

Yeah I think thats the problem. We all seem to have different definitions. As I see it;
Mocking - ReZ has the maturity of a gerbil (a non-serious insult, often used amongst friends. normally a one-off)
Teasing - Dan Dare's face fightens small children (similar to above but more frequent
Bullying - Insulting which actually hurts the person involved, intentional or otherwise.
Abuse - Intentional and frequent bullying.

That happens with me. I used to be really good with small children and small animals. But ever since I went through puberty I scare them. Especially when I speak.

Your definition of abuse is the one I had for bullying. In Danish we don't have the exact same terms, so that's partly the source of the confusion.

Lol, how could I resist?
*Lets change tease to mock* I would mock you if you also did things like filming yourself slapping your own face, slowing it down, and then putting it on youtube. Oh and if you think Lego is better than 'books', I'll definitely mock you.
ReZ, you know I'm kidding! :) Well I'm not, but I am in the same way.

I think you're confusing mocking with factual statements....?

I was joking when I said LEGO was better than books.*
*Well....I prefer them to books, but books are more important. Heck without books = no LEGO instruction manuals. Couldn't be doing with that.
Anyway leave WSD out of this.

Well, I guess I just don't want my kids to have a generic/common name. There are dozens of Joãos wherever I go (also: John, Juan, Jean, Giovanni, Hans,...are all common names around the world). Anyway, I dislike not having an unique name.
I'd rather name my kids something unusual (although not ridiculous like Henriqueta)

That's why I hid up that tree at the meet.

i guess some people would view bullying as banter, and vise versa. ultimatly, its an agrressive move to tease some one (to lesser the opinions of them to potental mates increasing your chances). we have play fights while growing, why not play verbal aggression?

Most bullying/abuse of the continuous kind is often brought on by people with low self-esteem. They use bullying to make themselves feel better by making other people feel even worse. I really don't think it is/should be a necessary part of childhood/life. Most people will most likely be hurt sometimes by verbal attacks, and you have to learn to deal with that, but the very aggressive, continuous bullying/abuse directed at one individiual in particular with the sole intention of making his or her life miserable - THAT I don't find a necessary part of life.

It scars some people for life, being bullied, so its definitely not necessary!
I got bullied, pretty much constantly, in school. I was THAT kid.. The one that everyone took a stab at. I had psoriasis, was really bad at PE cause of my arthritis, I'm somewhat overweight, and I had what they considered a foreign accent (I'm not originally from N.I)
I didn't have just a group of people that hated me, pretty much everyone did. It even dragged down to my sister, who was know as "her sister" and not by her real name, which was sad for her too.
I'll admit it did really hurt me at the time. I still have a LOT of social issues stemming from it. For example, people used to speak to me, just to hear my accent, and take the piss. I find it very difficult to introduce myself or say hello to people even now.
Saying all this, yes I have social issues, but im not really unhappy cause of it. Its just part of who I am I suppose.
