View Full Version : lols, Sheffield Meet Sat Sept 20th '08

Er, ok. With images of our Hyde park fiasco still burned onto my retinas, I'll attempt to patch together plans for a meet up in Sheffield.
The month will be September. The date will probably be... either Saturday september 13th or IS Saturday 20th. If we suggest meeting at between 11am and 12pm at the train station fountain, then we'll head for the botanical gardens to do more of the same, except... well, more I suppose.
There will be about 5 minutes from tescos there, too!
Er.... what do you think? I really feel like I'm jumping the gun here...
Those who are DEFINITELY going to be there;
dan dare! jayseven! The Bard! Nightwolf! Cube! Eevilmurray! Warandchaos! Davey_T! Harribo! Nami! Shorty! Raining_Again! Sheikah! Mr_Odwin!
Plus, y'know, special guests...

Hm, well I'd much rather the 13th than the 20th, though I'm not sure if I'll be at sheffield then, but it's easy enough to get there and back (it's two trains but it's an easy enough journey).
It's up to everyone else, but I maybe moving to sheffield so I'll have to check later in the month!
edit: basically for now it's a yes, but I may have to yank out if I have to move

I know where Sheffield is, my first GF lives (lived? honestly no idea! been like 4 years now!) there.
I'm on the M6, or more importantly on the West-Coast mainline. I have to go South to brum and then back up the Sheffield, or North to Manc, across to Leeds and back down to Sheffied. It's an hour and a half cross country by car or about 3 hours of train journeys (unless i'm very lucky and manage to get a Stafford-Stoke-Derby-Sheffield trip to work out, it's a difficult route).

Do it Flink. If jayseven can do it every Summer and Christmas you can. It's just one train to London and one train to Sheffield. (I'm assuming you mean from Brighton?)I might actually come to this one as i want to ride Devs green. It's smaller than it looks in photos, but still damn cool, they've recently rebuilt the 'green' area of Dev green, and there's awesome takeaway food and a huge American pool bar nearby. And a tesco. I don't know why I mentioned the tesco. I just wanted to look knowledgable.

Just checked on Google and it appears Sheffield is slightly to the East of Manchester... I may or may not make an appearence. Depends if I can get the time of work, and seeing as I'm teaching on Saturdays as of the middle of August it's probably a no. But I shall see what I can do.

Ok so I think I'll edit teh first post/title to say September 20th as more people are objecting to teh 13th. make a note in your diaries, folks.
Caris' mention of Devonshire Green is a good one - personally I prefer botanical gardens for its mix of seclusion and proximity to good shops. dev green is full of scenesters and emos, not as big, but right near Devonshire Cat which has good cask ciders! I suggest a trip there at night time to sample them (looks at Dan Dare specifically), perhaps on the friday if people are going to do the Hostel thing again.
I only had a brief search for hostels and all google threw at me was hostels for abandoned/homeless women and shit, so yeah... Someone else'll need to take charge and sort that out. If Shorty and I had a massiiiv house then we could cater for y'all, but it's only a small lil' thing, and would most likely burst at the seams with you all in. having said that we're not ruling out the possibility that we'll groom and select our favourites and bring them back for gimping and pimping tea and pancakes...
Yeah, same here. But, to visit j7's homeland, we shall see.
More of a home-from-homeland :P BUT YOU HAVE TO COME!
Can the humour implied in the title be revealed please.
Will be closer than London. I suppose I could offer potential arrival.
Jay, will our mysterious friends in common from Facebook be in attendance?Humour implied = the humour that is INEVITABLE, based on success of hyde Park :) As for our joint-friends (which I seem to have a lot of with you crazy n-ers, for some reason...) they could be invited, but I don't know them too well and I genuinely think they'll be a bit scared.
I recall most of the names mentioning uni from posting in the university thread a while ago, and us newcomers to Uni start earlier.
First year uni 'start' date usually includes fresher's week. Even if it doesn't, this'll be on a saturday!
I would love to meet you suckas...but I dunno if I can make eeet all da way up theeere.
Hmm, ponder on this, I will.
As shorty said, I've done the trip from brighton, and I've also done it from newport. I may even be going brighton > Sheffield > Newport > Brighton > Sheffield in the space of a week at the end of august >_< YOU HAVE TO.
29th August.. full time placements (9-5, x5) for 45 weeks!
Again, weekend ;) But if it's too far then that's totally fine. But ye will be missed.
This is within spitting distance for me so a show would be a possibility. May feel a bit paedophilic though, being 29 and hanging with all the cool (not really nintendo forum dweebs) kids.

Tis true, we will be acting mightily immature, but it woul be as if the seas parted if you make an appearance!

BOOYA! p.s. wear the suit.

Tbh, I don't think I'll make it to sheffield, it's rather far to go for me and I don't know if it'll be worth it.
JUST KIDDING! I'm totally gonna endeavour to be there, if you guys can make it down to london then I can most certainly make it to sheffield, even if it's just for J7 and his awesomeness. I'm gonna have a word with my mate who's up there to see if I can nab a bit of floor/bed whilst I'm there, if not I'll make sure I keep some money aside now for hostelling and stuffs. I'm totally gonna rock this party, unlike my mediocre and short lived appearance on the weekend, I really wish I'd been around and seen the guys for longer :(

20th ay? Depending on what time i would be back for i don't know if i could go, i've got an 18th birthday party to attend at 7pm.
Also i hope my driving will have improved by then, not driving for 8 weeks has really made my skills crap.
Should be able to make it myself, just need to hop across from Manchester via train.
Even more likely with the promise of good cider for my liver to get the beating it needs :)

Soo... I'm guessing nobody's going to take the initiative and start suggesting a hostel, or something? No? Well ya should. Don't rely on me as I've got my bed sorted for the night :P
I'm at the 'Uni Of' and i'm at Opal 2.
I think I can move in on the 20th, if so i'll be seeing you guys then.
Opal 2! That's the one with the scary statue outside innit? Right in between the dev cat and the washington, near Dev Green (which was another potential meeting place, but to be honest all the emo kids hang there and it's just annoying)
I also don't really understand the problem of going to the meet with regards to when you're moving your stuff in.
hmm, i feel obligated as its my hometown http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f99/paddydwight/151559__springsteen_l-1.jpg
But I'm moving down to London at the beginning of september. I can come back for it but is there any chance people would wanna just do the end of august instead whilst most people are still on holiday? Just a suggestion
also for anyone going from london or leicester or i think derby aswell i'll double check, you can get the mega train to sheffield for mad cheap in advance.
www.megabus.com
do it, doo itt nowww!!
DENIED! I've set a date. Yeah, who says my word is rule eh? ... I've just come back from sheffield. I got coach up there (£20ish in total, from brighton) and train back (£15! bargain).

Alot of people going jay seem to either be very near or live there so I don't think it's going to be needed?
Unless some people let others stay over at theres? Apprently I can either move in the 13/14th or the 20/21st, I'm trying to get my mum to help me for the 13th because either way my dads out and I'd rather have a week at shefs before hand rather than a day.

Yes because you never know who's going to beat you to death with a DS Lite/Phat in the early afternoon in a public area...
:) you can post on a forum all you like but you never know the real person till you meet them in person. Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith to meet other people that share a common intrest in gaming.

I do actively encourage new members to upload a photograph to make identifying people that little easier. :)
If your happy to continue spinning meetup's in a negative way then your going for Gold. But there are plenty of new people/members who join both DS: London and DS: Birmingham who don't know anyone.
Being the new person is never easy, but once you overcome the nerves/break the ice then 9/10 your glad you made the effort.

I'm not actively doing anything, meeting people off the internet is dangerous regardless, surely you should know that? It's not difficult to grab a picture off somebody's facebook and pretend it is your own.
With everything it should be done with common sense. It's not about being the new person, it's about your own personal safety, of course meeting people is new and exciting!
Now can we move back to the meet itself? :)

Safety is Important and that's why I only let members 18+ Join for the reason that your reponsible for yourself. It's also why I chose to host meetups in the early afternoon and not late at night. I've also opted for a public location in a family environment as well (Bowling Alley)

Something I forget to post earlier.
If people can't afford hostels/hotel rooms why not opt to Couch Surf?
http://www.couchsurfing.com/
For anyone that doesn't know it's a sight that lets you host/stay at a persons house for a set number of agreed nights. They either supply you with a couch/pull out bed/spare room and at the end you get to rate each other/leave feedback.

Nothing is without danger. But if you take the time to visit the site you can read the FAQ and find out all about the safety features.
I did it last year in New York for a week and had no problems at all. It also saved me a fortune on spending money on renting an apartment/hotel. In fact I stayed with a lovely family who were both helpful, accomdating and very informative.

Sheffield isn't that big. The Botanical gardens are, what, 20 mins away from where you'll be living, and we'll be there 'til it gets dark, then if anyone is still around we'll head to the Dev Cat for some drinks, which is probably about 10 mins from you, and we'll be there 'til 11pm.

Hell to the mothertrucking yeah. I'm guessing most everyone will be either drinking age, or old enough to pass for drinking age, as that was pretty much the case in London, so shouldn't be a problem. Also might need to get a hold of some restricted substances. Aww right.

Oh! Well I mean, the botanical gardens is where we will end up for a bit. I am totally willing to meet people from teh station and walk over to the gardens, for sure. It's not easy to describe how to get there, especially considering I never get the bus anywhere in sheffield.
Just if people are getting to the station then I can't keep going to-and-fro between teh station and the gardens picking people up and guiding them. We could have a general meet-at-station time, or we can tell people "just ask the locals for directions" thingum... But seeing as about 8 people are coming so far it's no biggie either way!
Dan Dare

yeah dev green is a nice option, just that it's packed and the ampitheatre-type landscaping means we'll be the focus of attention from randomers. it's goth/emo/skater central, too; especially the 14-y-o's.
But! it is more central, and closer to the station and dev cat/other clubs/bars/pubs. So why not?

I imagine people ought to push for a 12pm-get for the train station, warandchaos.
EEVIL: yeah fairly cheap there, but I still think we should park-it-up for the first few hours while there's sunlight :) But hey, if people want to just pub-it then who am I to stand in teh way? I liek pubs :)

bit stupid, but I've forgotten the exact name. It's made by Belgian Monks though; exactly the way they made it 300 years back.
Quite what this method is eludes me, however. One theory is that they actually own The Holy Grail and use it's powers to transform water in to this Ambrosia.
The actual taste was peculiar, but amazing. It hovered somewhere between ale and lager, with an almost citrus sharpness to it. It was incredible.
also incredible: £4.50 for just over half a pint of the stuff. Veeeery pricey but it's just off the scale delicious. It made sweet, prince grade love to my tastebuds.

In the old days wasnt beer brewed by putting the ingrediants in their mouth and spitting them into a container which was then left for a while?

"Why burn, poor and lonely?" I hate how the internet is both serious yet completely casual at teh same time, how people can complain in one place about one thing then in another completely pretend that it doesn't bother them at all, despite the heavily-thought-out reply to suggest it's any different. I hate how people forget that there are real people behind these avatars. I hate how everyone is so self-involved, myself included, and half the stuff -- if not more -- that anyone ever says is useless, dire dregs of mentality which is only pronounced in order to further ones own ideals of importance. I hate how easy it is to slip into the hypocritacal, and how jaded life is, regardless of teh spectator. I hate how this is the wrong thread to post this shit yet I can get away with it because...
