Ok, after my original post in the How was your Day thread, I have been applying like a bitch, ringing places, applying online, sending applications...I must have applied to almost 20 places now. It's insane.

Who else is job-hunting right now? This is the place to vent your frustrations, talk about your success/worries, and also maybe give out details of jobs that are going in your area/websites to visit...this may just help a brother out.

I'd like another job... :p

Tried temp agencies, pubs/restaurants? Are you in Brighton or Wales? Because if theres touristey places nearby they tend to need more work for the summer (i.e. the West Midlands Safari Park near me tends to be filled with uni kids over the summer).

Prostitution?

I'm in Wales...sad fact is that if I were in Brighton, I'd have got something by now. There's just more going on there. Newport is..well...shit.

Sent off about 15 applications for a full time london job. Trying to get one before September so I still have a while but would be nice to get one quick or at least have an interview!

I've called and emailed up somebody, and they have acknowledged me. It was with a question.."how long are you available for?" but still...acknowledgement!

There is nothing worse than looking for a job, it always seems to take an age while everyone around you is working away.

I got my job through a temp agency in 2005 and have been here ever since and have now worked my way up to £335 pound a week after tax.

I wish all you job searchers luck.

Looking for a job is hell, especially when you first start doing it.

I wish I got paid more than £6 an hour, London is expensive.

Then again, I suppose I do get paid to play video games.... :hmm:

...even though you'd have to pay me to play SquEx games because they are as dull as sand paper.

I found a job really easily. A local pub/restaurant is under new ownership and taking on a whole rota of staff so I applied there for bartender, waiter and KP, got offered KP or waiter. Went for the waiter. Everyone's in for their training end of next week, getting taught about wines etc. Should be good. No idea how much I'm getting paid yet though. Will give me something to do during the day. :)

Jesus, you have no idea....I need work so badly. No cash left and my parents are going to crucify me tonight. They'll have to bail me out short term and I feel like a fucking scrounger. Yay for Graduate prospects...

As soon as they find out you're from uni, they don't want to know.

Most people will only take bums who will dedicate their life to that company, because they're not bluddy going anywhere else. Shoot me for having ambition.

I managed to get a graduate job confirmed last week after loads of interviews and those crappy assesment centres = good news. Pay isnt great for first 12 months as ill just be training so wont be any better off, probably worse off due to council tax and all that jazz :indeed: But its a start!

P.S. Temping agencys all the way for summer jobs, no many people are gonna employ and train you just for 2 months, its a waste of time and money on their half

I've applied for a few others now. Must be well over 20 by now.

It's stupid when you're searching on some websites. I specifically typed in Newport, and you still get results for Cardiff. Yes, I'm well aware there are plenty of jobs going there, you know..it being the capital city of Wales and all that. But I want jobs in Newport!

So far, I've got 2 emails to my name, from that same person as before. The second one basically said "we're looking for people who will be here a lot longer than three months."

...:(

I've got customer service and telesales experience. It's well documented in my CV, and it's not just a month or two, I've been doing telesales since 2004, part time, full time, temporary, permanent...and I've had no replies so far.

From what I've heard, most teach you everything about how to use the till and how to deal with customers anyway, even if you've had a position in a different branch of the same chain.

When I eventually get an interview, what do I say when they ask me what I've done in the past year? "I went to uni and dropped out" doesn't sound like a good answer...

How about "I started a university course, but came to the realisation I was in the wrong place doing the wrong subject, so I've been working/looking for the path in life best suited to me".

It's all about the spin.

The one thing that really wound me up when out of work was the fact that no-one acknowledged an application or got back in contact with you to tell you if you got the job or not, and have to call them yourself. It's a test for the employer to see if you are serious or not about the job. A good tip, don't leave answer phone messages because they don't like that.

Just don't tell them it's only going to be for 3 months at the interview. It's not as if you're locked into a 12 month contract working there, just hand in your notice after the 2nd month and they can't do anything.

I hate that. Because I come from a small town put anything too specific and it will come up with like three results, and the rest in London. THANKS! Its only 200-or-something miles away. EASY.

Tomorrow I am going to tell work I am willing to do up to 7 days a week (which I may later regret). As I figure it; 12 weeks of work, 40 weeks of awesoming.

Ah yes... finding a job. I haven't actually worked for over two years now:o

I left my job when I got to the end of my 3rd year @ Uni cos I was really struggling with work and finding the time to study so I quit and my honours year went by without a hitch. I graduated last year and like most people on here, having a degree didn't seem to mean shit - especially as I'd only had the one job and that was in retail.

So many, many rejections later I decided to take the rest of the year off and go do a Post-Grad this year which I applied for today and have decided that I should probably get a P/T job just to help with general Uni-ness and also paying my parents back for the fees that they are paying for me to do my PG. Applied for a couple of jobs today so fingers crossed everything goes well. Good luck to everyone else - finding employment is one of the most soul-destroying tasks there is:shakehead

It is impossible to find a job.
I'm quite lucky and have an interview for the shop i've been doing a paper round for 5 years for tomorrow. I should get it hopefully. They love me in there.
Apart from that, i have not been able to find another job in the past year. Not even as a xmas temp. They all want experience.
I'm not looking forward to looking for a full time job for september.

Get a job with an agency! Best advice i ever had. Sure you get shit pay, and treated horribly. But you get the all wanted, all needed EXPERIENCE.

And if you are keen the company you are with might take you on properly, like mine did!

Ask for work experience at various places, most places will take you on in some form or another, even if its just making tea for a week you can still put it down as experience in that field of work.

Ok, this is fudging me off now.

I went to the job-centre on Friday, and found a few phone numbers. So, rang up, and one of the numbers sounded really promising and they seemed interested in my experience. So, they asked me to send my CV across, which I did.

I've heard nothing since. On top of that, I've got a telephone interview with Lloyds TSB but I don't think they'll be taking in new workers until the end of July.

I'm currently hunting for a job. Been to a local shopping centre today, handed out some CVs and a few places are currently looking for staff so fingers crossed for a reply. Also went to town on friday and handed out some CVs there. I at least have some retail experience from working in my local charity shop so I'm not in desperate need of that anymore. Does anyone else think girls are more favoured for work in retail or am I just being stupid =/?

Depends on what sort of retail work I would think. Somewhere like Boots and they might unofficially prefer a girl but in a male clothes shop then they would unofficially prefer a guy.

I say "unofficially" because obviously they're open to anyone applying for the job regardless of gender.

I should be doing my training this Thursday and Friday and then start properly when the restaurant opens on Monday evening. :)

Well, went to see the agency in town, and the lady told me that they're more or less looking for permanent workers...why is a bit shitty because the print-out from the job centre said TEMPORARY.

She said she's got a few places in mind and will get back to me in the next few days. My reaction: I'm not holding out much hope, at all. Again, as soon as she found out that my future profession was teaching, she pretty much wrote me off. Why the hell do they keep doing this?

So, on the way home, I passed another agency. Went inside, and signed myself up. Did a few word, excel and typing tests, which altogether took about an hour! Saying that, I've found that I can type 61 words a minute with 98% accuracy, which she seemed really impressed about! So, heh, you never know.

I'm going there again tomorrow to fill out some admin, and then they're going to see what's out there for me. They specialise in admin and office work, so maybe I'll have some luck. *fingers crossed*

Alright, that's it. I've reached the end of my tether. Expect a rant and foul-mouthed tirade of abuse.

I've woke up this morning, taken my documents and have hit the town. Been back to the agency I went to yesterday, filled out a load of forms. And, got told that they'll get back to me if they hear anything...

What? Is that it? After ALL that, after spending an hour doing your tests, another hour filling in your forms and coming in again this morning, THAT is all you had to tell me?

On the plus side, they gave me a list of all the agencies in Newport. I've looked at this list and have ticked off the ones that I have already been to. So, I visit each one, and I hear "sorry, we haven't got anything at the moment."

"ok, what about <insert category>."
"nope, sorry, we haven't got anything."
"Anything?"
"Anything...*like I'm stupid*"

So, I pop along to the next one. I see an advert for customer services in the window:

"sorry, we don't do customer services here."
"But, the window..."
"yeah, that's taken care of by our <insert other brand name in here>"
"ok...can I have their email address, please."
"Yeah...here's mine and then I'll forward it for you."
"um..ok."

I have been everywhere. I've been to the jobcentre, I've been to the agencies, I've checked online, I've looked through the paper, and there is NOTHING. Not a fucking single job going in this town.

I've had it, I've had enough.

I'm training to be a teacher, and it's not fucking cheap to be a teacher. Apart from the placements which you do not get paid for (infact you lose money), there's the fact that you also have to pay rent, bills, uni expenses, and somehow live off that money as well - without the student loan, I'd be royally fucked.

So, I come home for the summer, and I think to myself "hey, I'll fund my career by doing some work. I'm not afraid of working, I'm hardworking and I'll put in as much effort as I can. I'll go job-hunting."

Well, it's not nice to see the door slammed in your face at every place you go, or worse, to not even get a second thought or being acknowledged. Yes, I'm a student, but I have bills to pay to. Just because I have an ambition, don't fucking penalise me for it. If you want experience, I have it. If you want availability, you've got it. If you want effort, you've got that. What more do you fucking want?!

Newport is supposed to be an up-and-coming city. There's loads of developments going on to make it more student-friendly. Well, if they can't get the work, what the FUCK is the use in doing all these developments? What's the goddamn point in making all these luxury flats and houses if nobody can afford to live in them? I've had enough of this 'city' and it's the second summer that I've spent here trying to look for some work to fund my future career and just to live. It's not good enough, and on the way home I was really seething with anger and was contemplating sending an angry letter to my local council, because I find it hard to believe that a city with such apparant ambition can also house some of the laziest and worst agency staff that I've yet to come across.

I was actually giving a thought to moving back to Wales after uni, but now I've thought better of it. I'd rather not step foot in this fucking shithole again. Thanks a lot, Newport. Thank's for fucking nothing.

Ok, this is how my day went.

I woke up this morning, because my brother was knocking on my door. He came in and said that Lloyds TSB were on the phone talking about a telephone interview for a job.

So, I ran downstairs, in my underwear, and was on there for half an hour having an interview. It went really well I thought, I spoke as confidently as it's possible for me to do and I tried to take my time and be clear. I was quite proud.

They said thank you and that they'd let me know in a few days.

So, I'm sat on the computer, browsing N-E...and my phone rings. It's that claire person who I went to see the other day who didn't give me a second thought cos I was a student:

"Hey, its claire. What are you doing this afternoon?"
"Hi, um...nothing...why? Is everything ok?"
"Yes, everything is fine thank you. How would you like a job?"
"what now?! YES please!"
"ok, you need to go to so and so, they need people on the phones. Here is where you need to go <insert long instructions> and then you're there. Its yours."
"...thank you! :D"

I rush around the house trying to look smart, and she calls again.

"hello, one last thing. Don't tell them you're a student, best not to, eh? :)"
"ok, I agree! Thank you!"

So, she came good in the end!

The job itself is fine. Call centre work, which I've done before and am used to, so it's fine. The people there are nice, everyone seems quite happy. I've only literally just got through the door. It's going to take me about 45 mins to walk there everyday, but its fine.

YES! The searching did pay off.

So the moral of the story is...keep going. Right to the very end. Never say die, and in some way you will be rewarded. All this frustration of going out there everyday to find something has finally seemed to have paid off.

*sigh of relief*

Just (about 3 hours ago) got back from my training and I'm absolutely shagged. Partly because I only slept for about 4 hours last night and partly because I haven't sat down all day. 2 of the girls I'm going to be working with are hot though so it's all good. There were 4 of us there, my friend Dom who I've known for ages and 2 girls who are both really nice. The 4 of us got in really well so working there should be pretty good. Another guy is coming in tomorrow who couldn't make it today who I know well and there are a few older people starting too.

The place opens on Monday night for "family and guests" and then properly on Tuesday. The guy is really flexible too so if I ever want to get a day off if I ask far enough in advance I should be able to do so. :)

By there, there's that pub, The Old Rising Sun. That road to the right of it, carry on up there, right at the T-junction and keep following the road around. 10 mins later, my workplace is right at the end.

Middle of nowhere, takes me 40 mins or so to get to work!

I need to get myself a job now, for many reasons (the N-E meetup in September being one.)

I just fancy a part-time job in retail, working on the shop floor at the checkouts or wherever. Maybe somewhere in Birmingham city centre or North Birmingham, nothing too far.

Now, I'm a total n00b when it comes to job-hunting. I've looked in the Birmingham Mail for jobs, found nothing. And websites offer fuck all as well. I might have to ask Connexions about it, they might help me in some way.

looking elsewhere but not much else that I'm interested in tbh. Don't really mind a catering or retail job...sigh.

Woo! Just applied for my first testing job today. Think its Swordfish Studios but it's a bit hard to tell. Going to send in to apply for a Disney interactive one soon but I'm getting mega-mixed messages about what should be on my CV.

Really hope that I can get some interviews soon or at least apply for more than 4 jobs this week. We will see!

i can't get a JSA so i have bum all money.

Gah... haven't heard anything from the agency I've applied for my testing job through (which I'm not sure if I should be worried about) and been applying to others. Why is it that when you're not looking for a job they're everywhere (especially the particular kind that you're after) and then as soon as you start, there are NONE!? Zero, nada... finito....

Ahhhh well. Knew this was gonna be a long process anyway. They probably have to traul through a million applications per testing job anyway. Hope I can get one in at least 2 months or so or I'm gonna have to start thinking of some different options.

Interview for an administator job today for a recycling company who works at the local council. It was awful. Firstly had to translate two English paragraphs into Welsh. Found it very difficult, as it's been years since I've done serious Welsh written work. Was inventing words up for certain things. Then I got put in a room simillar to Alan Sugar's office in the The Apprentice, with 4 important people who had come up all the way from England to do the interviews today. Was totally unexpected (used to one on one interviews) and I performed very badly in front of them. Had no idea what they were talking about and some of the questions were totally ridiculous. Was really considering walking out or pretending to faint so I could get out of it! Ah well, back to square one....

My job search is getting nowhere. Applied to 7 places, got 2 rejections and haven't heard from any of the others. Starting to run out of places to apply for. :heh:

I got my current job after showing up to the interview 40 minutes late (thank you Manchester ring road traffic), and not knowing the answers to several of the technical questions they asked me. But ... they liked my personality (who doesn't?) and offered me the position.

Summary: Try to emulate Mr_Odwin's personality and jobs will fall at your feet.

All this useless job hunting is actually making me want summer to end. I actually told my mum today: "I wish the summer was over". She laughed in my face.

Usually I don't have a problem finding a job for the summer, but this year is fucked up. Hardly heard back from anyone.....making me feel like shit. Hardly got any money...its just been raining and raining...typical fucking British summer.

No luck with the job hunting. Hardly anyone has gotten back to me yet. Really really angry. I apply to so many places, places which are relevant to my past experience and skills and still, I have hardly received anything back...I don't see myself getting a job this summer.

Sigh.

I'm pretty sure most companies don't read all of an application form anyway. For instance there was a section on the form that I filled in for my current job that asked for likes and dislikes, and under the latter I put, "Filling in application forms. Seriously." It never came up in the interview.

I need to start looking for a second part-time job, but it could prove tricky as I'd ideally like to keep my weekends free. Well, that and the fact it took me over 6 months to get my current position, something which doesn't exactly have me brimming with hope when it comes to finding a second.

Clintons took 5 days to get back to me. I was quite impressed. As soon as I saw the phone number on my phone I was feeling optimistic [If it were a local number I would've had it saved - because I'm that damn popular.]

I was starting to lose hope earlier this morning/last night. However I'm sure they spunked their eyes off while reading my CV.

I've got an interview with Sports World tommorow, where, if I get the job, I will be working for, wait for it.... £3.40 an hour! Hell yeah =P The annoying thing is that all of my friends wages will gradually be going up this year as they reach 18 - my birthday is on the 20th August so I will be seeing no increase for quite a while in any job I get =(. Oh well, could be worse I suppose. I read somewhere that one billion people in the world live on less than one dollar each day :(.

Get yourself a hat and start busking outside the local shopping centre, hell if you sing the theme tune to Baywatch I'd make sure you got more than £3.40 for a 3 minute song, let alone an hour.

Alright, I'm looking at the Codemasters website and they have sweet FA as far as testing goes by the look of it but they do have a customer service position available.

Check it: http://www.codemasters.co.uk/corporate/careers/featured-jobs/

Now, a few questions. Do you really think that speaking another language is required and at the end there is stuff about travelling over seas. How often does that sound to anyone?

Speaking from experience, I startd my job in a well known department store over 2 years ago, worked my way up from the bottom and now i'm the one doing interviews. Everyone says the best way to write a CV or fill out an application from is to basically speak bullshit and make yourself out to be far more awesome than you really are, to me it's now the way to go. When i'm looking at application forms, i look at the people being honest, i've no time for bullshitters. I've generally found it to be a successful formula so far, if you're honest about what you can do, what you've done - I think you'll get better results.

I'm kinda giving up hope really.

I'd like a job, I really would. My bank account is at an all time low but I can survive. Its just that no one wants to take on someone who will only be available to work for the next month or two before going off to Uni. I can see why no one is willing to take me on.

But in saying that, I have had a number of call backs about various jobs I have applied for...but all of them require something like 6 months minimum...I know some of you will probably say to just not tell them (about going to Uni) but IMO it wouldn't be worthwhile working someplace for only a month or so. You'd hardly get settled before you'd be off again someplace else, and for me, I'd rather not do that.

Its kind of annoying how I got this new job with footlocker. I basically stepped in with no cv/app form on a wednesday to ask for vacancies, manager says yes blah blah blah and tells me to come in on Thursday for an interview, after a weak interview (by me imo) he tells me I got the job and now Friday I gotta get in and drop my passport, NI number etc... :D

Its annoying because some of you probably have been struggling searching for a job while on the very first day I set out to look for one, I get it... Life is hard indeed.

:p

(Don't kill me).
