Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (commonly abbreviated to MGS4) is the forthcoming game in the popular Metal Gear series. Directed by Hideo Kojima, Shuyo Murata and Yoji Shinkawa, Guns of the Patriots is currently being developed by Kojima Productions exclusively[2] for the PlayStation 3 video game console. The game is being designed around the motto, "No Place to Hide!" As with previous iterations in the series, MGS4 will reportedly be the last Metal Gear Solid game developed by Hideo Kojima, and the last game in the series starring Solid Snake.

.......its been a long day.......
Apparently much like the opening twist (of having to play as Raiden) in MGS2; the Middle East section is only a small opening portion of the game, in which, shock-horror!, Snake dies and you take control of a different character throughout the other locations.

Talk about spoilers...
I didn't know that.
Edit: I don't think thats true actually cause in the trailers you see Snake in a none middle east environment.
Stefkov
11-03-2008, 12:53 AM
Jesus that better not be true.
Sorry I forgot to mention that was pure speculation. It was just an article I found on GamesRadar, here it is, it's an interesting read:
After MGS2's shock opening - getting rid of Snake, drafting in Raiden - anything goes for MGS4. We already know that it'll be taking place over multiple locations, but expect the first middle-east environment to end with some eye-opening conclusions, just like the shipwreck in MGS2's opening section.
We're expecting Dr. Naomi Hunter - seen in the 'copter that Liquid Ocelot escapes from during the E3 trailer - to play some part in this. We don't really know which side she's on, but we do know she took revenge on Snake for fatally wounding her brother, Frank Jaeger, by injecting him with the FoxDie virus in MGS - which could result in Snake's death at any time. Perhaps she believes that death hasn't come soon enough. Which leads us to...
Old Snake will kark it within the first hour of play...
Yep, he's a dead man. Either by following through with the suicide attempt at the end of the first trailer - following a failed mission to kill Ocelot - or by Naomi perhaps triggering or affecting his FoxDie infection, or simply through extreme old age. But whatever happens, we're sure the end of the first chapter leaves Snake on a slab.
...and he'll be replaced by Young Snake
As in, the youthful Snake who gets bird-droppings on his lovely camo suit in the XX trailer. Is he a resurrection of Big Boss? Or has Old Snake succeeded in reversing his super-aging issue? Well, we reckon it's neither. Instead, it's something far more interesting.
First, we know Vamp is back, along with his 'immortal' cellular make up. What we see happening is Old Snake kicking the bucket, before being reincarnated through the use of Vamp's blood or tissue, and the rejuvenated Young Snake taking up the mission to stop Ocelot's world-threatening plans.
You'll play as more than one character
Three, in fact. That's Old Snake, for the first chapter, and Young Snake for the rest of the game. Except, that is, for the second part immediately after Old Snake dies during the middle-east op. Because that's when you'll play as... Raiden!
We see it working out like this. After Old Snake dies, the Foxhound team (led by Meryl) take his body and leave the middle-east. When, as heard in an early trailer, Raiden says "It's my turn to protect you," he's actually talking to Snake's cooling corpse.
Of course, this is Raiden in super-ninja form, so it'll be an all-action episode. You'll travel to South America - in pursuit of Vamp - and leap and bound through some exhilerating conflict with the mooing Gekko Gears. Raiden will finally 'kill' Vamp, though being mortally wounded in the process.
Vamp's body, through tissue grafting (like Liquid's arm on Ocelot) or simple blood transfusion, will revive Snake's dead one. Young Snake will then take on the mission.

What if it's a big let down though? Twilight Princess couldn't live up to Ocarina. Godfather 3 anyone? Am I being too pessimistic? I suppose the Metal Gear games have gotten better each time (Yes I think 2 was better than 1 :D).

Here some of infomation on Raiden.
While Metal Gear Solid was in production for the original Playstation, a female play tester complained to Konami that they "don't want to play as some old guy", thus they created Raiden. A rather feminine main character for MGS2, quite the opposite of Solid Snake.
Yoji Shinkawa (Metal Gear Solid 1,2,3,4 portable ops character designer) explains that Raiden is the cyborg Ninja in Metal Gear Solid 4 to represent the abuse he recieved for being the character he is and the main role in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Raiden is literally falling apart. All that remains of Raiden's human self is his head and his spine. The rest of him are cybernetic attachments which give him the abilities of the Cyborg Ninjas we have seen the previous titles.
"He has gone through a lot since he was shown in Metal Gear Solid 2." , explains Yoji. "We never predicted this kind of thing would happen after showing Raiden in MGS2."
While it isn't uncommon for developers to directly listen to fans, it's always nice to hear about it. He is very pleased with the reception of Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 4 and hopes he will get treated a little better this time!

It was revealed last month that a Blu-ray disc wasn’t big enough to hold all languages for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4. Since all previous Playstation 3 games have resorted to the more constricted 25GB Disc, it was unclear whether MGS4 was to stray from this trend.
Many presumed that Kojima decided to go with a 25gb Blu-ray disc to save on costs, but it was yesterday revealed in a Konami retailers meeting that the game is the biggest of the series, and will be presented on a 50GB disc.

Is this some kinda publicity stunt? I mean*, did they do something stupid like record the sound clips on a stupidly high quality file format that takes up loads more room than it needs to or something? Because think about it, take urm... for example metal gear 3 (could be any game really) and improve the graphics to the same level as MGS4, how many GB would that be? Surely not 50gb!?
You know, it wouldn't surprise me too much if they made the game longer this time. 30 hours or so maybe? I'd love to see the South America section of the game be another whole game in itself.
On another note, has anyone seen any sections of the S.America section of the game? I'm guessing it's either been scrapped and it'll all be in the Middle East or they have some sort of surprise up their sleeves...
*don't pounce on me computer wizzerz if that was very stupid pls kk.

Well the story is literally half the experience of the Metal Gear Solid games so I highly advise playing Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and then Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2 version).
Still if MGS3 wasn't for you then maybe the series as a whole isn't going to be your thing. Still they're all great games in their own rights.

SRSLY SRSLY!
GET the previous 3! Play the original original (i.e. not the twin snakes) if you can, but if you really must play Twin Snakes, remember the ***** who remade it tried to make it into a Matrix rip off which doesn't represent the fairly realistic fighting styles of the original games.
You can get MGS2 from bargin bins! My favourite game of all time, but most people didn't like it.
MGS3 is tricky in that the Subsistence version is hugely superior but also a lot more expensive. MGS3 Snake Eater is okay though.
AND PLAY THEM IN ORDER!
Can we make this thread wrapped spoliers only possibly?
I would but I don't have a PS2 and even though they are cheep I don't want another box under the TV. The lack of backward compatibility basically killed any chance of me catching up on stuff I missed out.

Fair enough guys, but I still have to maintain that I didn't like the Twin Snakes much. Reasons being-
1. Dancey electronic music instead of orchstral score is a personal huge distaste. 2. Snake backflips over a missile. I felt the cutscenes undermined the style and everything I love about the other games' cutscenes. I mean, snake fights the ninja like he has the same Matrixy abilities as him, I think that's seriously lame. 3. Re-recorded voice cast, Naomi or Mei Ling sound very different arg!
And as a remake with the MGS 2 gameplay mechanics, some of the level design no longer works too well. But that's not a huge deal.
I'm surprised that Konami did the cut scenes! Maybe it was a different team to those who made the other MGS games though?
Just found this, blimey! -
'Kitamura created many of the games cinematics to look identical to those in the original Metal Gear Solid, but upon inspection Hideo Kojima had him redo them.'
Maybe Hideo was drunk.

I actually agree with this. Whilst it doesn't really piss me off, it's a bit stupid. In the cutscenes they really made it look as if Snake's superhuman. He's not superhuman, he's just damn good at his job, and it should have stayed like that.

The MGS Trilogy re-release in the US is just on standard PSOne and PS2 discs meaning we cant play it over here. Would it have been so hard to release it on blu instead? Im mean its not remastered or anything.
Yeah I really wish they would release them on a Bluray...

The metal case isn't for the game is it? I hate having games/dvds/cds in weird boxes (especially dvd boxsets in hard) that don't match the rest of the collection in shape. It just annoys me (OCD perhaps...).
Does anyone else have the regular version Metal Gear 2 without the clear case, instruction manual manga, and making of DVD? I reckon my non limited edition version is actually very rare! I got it in official bundle pack with my PS2.

Oh, well I was in Holland at the time. I simply pointed out that Liquid's voice in the actual game wasn't really any more convincing than that in Metal Gear Awesome, followed by an impression.

- nanomachines play a big role in mgs4, they contribute in a sense to the change of how war is fought. The author can't be more specific though (nda prolly).
- all cutscenes are real time
- some cutscenes are very long (30 minutes even for some)
- some cutscenes are controllable. For example: during the briefing in the second mission, you can choose different camera angles.
- some graphical elements make the game come to life: birds flying over, cables swaying in the wind, a lot of explosions, etc.)
- still a lot of aliasing but nothing serious
- still some framedrops but a lot better than it was at tgs07
- explosions, fire and smoke effects are amazing
- you really think you are on the battlefield, thanks to the ambiance and sound in the game (a lot of credibility in the environments).
- synchronisation in speech not perfect yet, but Kojima promises it will be in the final version.
- new animations (snake reaches for his shoulder sometimes because he's in pain), new cqc movements, rolling barrel is a great addition
- solid eye and mkII have a battery that will autocharge when not in use
- Otocamo is very nice, you can have the texture of a wall or the ground
- radar shows North, the objective and forces present
- at the top of the screens two bars: health bar and psych or stress bar
- map is available in 2D or 3D via the pause menu.
- you can customise weapons in Drebin's shop (accessible in the pause menu) eg: new silecener, flashlight, etc. Some weapons have limitations for customising though. Each wednesday and sunday, the price for these adjustments is only half of the normal price. Drebin is always accompanied by a monkey and you need him to get access to new weapons.
- you buy weapons with DB or Drebin Points, you get these points by selling the loot you gain/collect in combat.

IGN's Metal Gear Solid 4 Hands-on (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/863/863825p1.html)
I'm the first American in the world to have beaten MGS4, which is freaking awesome.
Three weeks ago, Konami extended a once in a lifetime invitation to a handful of journalists. Fourteen people from around the world gathered together at the Konami Super Campus in Nasu to experience one of the most anticipated titles in recent history, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in a specialized boot camp for the game. We weren't simply shown snippets of levels or gameplay demos; instead, we were sequestered for three days at their facility for two specific tasks. The first task was that we were to play through the entire title from start to finish with the Konami team gathering our stats and play information as we progressed.
The second task was much more important, because at the end of every gameplay session, we were asked to provide detailed feedback, which would be given to the development team to make adjustments to the final build of the title. We weren't alone in experiencing the game in this way; Kojima himself was replaying the title at the same time we were, going through the same gameplay sections and feedback tasks as we were. In effect, we became part of the design team. As I stated earlier, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, especially for any Metal Gear Solid fan. Not only were we getting a chance to complete the game before anyone else, but we were making an impact on the overall game that will launch worldwide on June 12th.
The final chapter in the 20-year franchise that constantly redefined the stealth action genre, Metal Gear Solid 4 brings Solid Snake back out of the shadows for one final mission to eliminate his nemesis, Liquid Ocelot. But, like every other Metal Gear Solid game, there's much more going on than a simple assassination. I certainly won't spoil the plot points or the story here; there is only so much that I'm allowed to talk about, after all. Instead, I will go into more detail on a section we've previously covered: the Middle East area that Snake has infiltrated in released trailers or demos.
But let me first preface that statement with one new piece of info that we hadn't previously known. Whereas previous Metal Gear Solid games have been relatively linear in their approach, MGS4 is much more of an open-world affair. While there are still specific locations that Snake will need to get to (which will constantly be indicated on Snake's mini-map), the environments that he finds himself in will provide multiple paths to get him to his eventual destination. This provides much more flexibility in how you fight your way through the battlefields that engulf MGS4.
Snake will come across the horrors of war.
As we were told in last year's E3 trailer, war has completely changed the world. No longer is it a breakdown of diplomacy between countries – conflict has become a financial factor by itself, supporting the global economy by virtue of the PMCs that are continually moving into areas of the world and engaging in battle. In fact, battles aren't about countries any more – they're more about factions engaging other factions. Even civilians aren't safe in this new world order, as most people are simply born to fight and die, mostly without a cause or a reason to go to war. Cities are constantly shelled, buildings are blown up and every street is a battlefield. This constant conflict between nanomachine-enhanced soldiers is a significant factor within the game, and plays a huge role within your exploration of the ruined landscape of the Middle East.
It's into this kind of regionalized turmoil that Snake is initially deployed. The first time you see the legendary soldier, he's clad in the garb of a local militia man, which he uses to infiltrates a village during an attack. Even though his clothing looks like that of the locals, he hasn't fully earned the trust of the militia. This provides a different spin on the standard "lone wolf" insertion that Snake has performed in his previous games. By choosing to fight alongside the militia, you can slowly build confidence with the warriors. This can be advantageous to you, because if you convince them of your intentions, the resistance soldiers will provide covering fire, hand you ammunition and even provide health items that you can use to restore your flagging energy. However, this alliance can be a fragile one, particularly if your aim is poor. Not only will your former allies turn on you if they sense something suspicious, but all of the other soldiers will immediately know if you've betrayed their comrades, and you may need to change back into your militia gear to avoid suspicion or to better blend in with resistance groups that aren't friendly so you can accomplish your mission.
Speaking of modifying your appearance, Snake's OctoCamo suit works better than what we've seen in previous trailers. Give Snake two to three seconds without moving, and he immediately blends into the surroundings, taking on the textured appearance of the surface he's kneeling next to or lying on. It's an excellent trick that innately builds upon the camouflage elements of Snake Eater and makes it much easier to evade detection by intelligent PMC troops as long as you don't attract attention with obvious movement. Inchworming along the ground while camouflaged or rolling from one location to the other shouldn't attract much attention, which is a good thing for these much more alert enemies. These troops won't merely walk along simple patrol paths. They'll actively scan environments for trouble, communicating anything suspicious to their comrades and call in for backup, making them much more threatening than previous enemies Snake has faced.
Never saw it coming.
Apart from using the OctoCamo to fade from sight, you can acquire a drum can to hide you from troops. Much like the classically used cardboard box, Snake can tiptoe in the metallic drum can, advancing silently into areas under cover. The drum can isn't perfect, especially because astute soldiers can kick and overturn the barrel if they sense something out of order. However, unlike the cardboard box, which is easily destroyed, the drum also has a few defensive uses. Its metallic shell will repel gunfire from most firearms, and players can tip it on its side and roll through enemies, knocking them for a loop.
This is merely one of the ways that Snake can take out soldiers. He has a whole new compliment of CQC moves, such as choking them silently along the ground. We did notice that unconscious soldiers did appear to be knocked out much longer than in previous Metal Gear Solid games, regardless of whether we took them out with our fists, an electric shock from our stun blade, a tranquilizer dart or by being rolled over by drum can. But sometimes you might need more firepower than non-lethal means, particularly when you and your allies are pinned down by large groups of PMCs in armored personnel carriers. You've got a couple of options available to you in this case. The first is to get behind the controls of a mortar and shell the enemy positions. While Snake is somewhat exposed as he's adjusting the trajectory of the weapon, he can fire an unlimited amount of shells on troops and vehicles alike. Along with the destructive power, the splash damage from the explosives will easily knock down or eliminate nearby enemies.
The other way is to use firearms that you acquire from fallen enemies. Like previous Metal Gear Solid games, you'll acquire pistols, machine guns, grenades and other weapons from enemy soldiers. However, there's a twist to the standard "procure on site" method that MGS fans are accustomed to. In this world of PMCs and rebel factions, all weapons are coded to specific soldiers via their individual nanomachine codes. If you're not that soldier and you attempt to fire their gun, you get absolutely no response whatsoever (call it the ultimate trigger lock). So how exactly do you gain useable firearms in the game?
You have to have someone launder the weapon, removing this lockout feature. In Metal Gear Solid 4, this is handled via Drebin, the mysterious new character introduced in earlier released trailers. This new shop system works rather ingeniously – every single weapon that Snake comes across is immediately translated to Drebin points, representing its current world value in the theater of war during a given day. The more violent the conflict in the world, the more Drebin points you receive. Players can then use these points to unlock these collected weapons for their use, or players can save their points up to purchase ammunition or items in Drebin's shop, such as laser sights, hand grips and flashlights. These additional items can improve the accuracy or stability of a weapon, making it much better in combat. What's more, you can even get more for your Drebin Points if you return to the shop on certain in-game "days," as Drebin will offer sales for Snake so he can get the best bang for his buck.
Fortunately, you don't have to continually backtrack to a set location to sell your collected weapons, nor do you have to constantly expose yourself to danger just to collect a few guns from fallen soldiers. The Mark II can act as your conduit to Drebin, automatically converting any weapons into Drebin Points while saving the ammunition for Snake. Thanks to its size and the fact that it is invisibly cloaked from view thanks to OctoCamo technology, Snake can use the diminutive robot to sprint around the battlefield, gathering fallen weapons as he scouts out the environment around him. The Mark II can also be used to knock out soldiers from afar, as it can stealthily move up to troops and discharge an electrical blast akin to the stun knife. However, you have to be careful, because the Mark II can disrupt its invisibility if it bumps into a target or goes over a significant drop. The robot also has a limited range that it can be sent away from Snake before it becomes uncontrollable, and finally, it only has a certain amount of batteries that it can use before it runs out of power and has to be recharged.
The Mark II isn't the only new gadget that Snake gets in MGS4. Otacon has been hard at work on a brand new vision system known as the Solid Eye, which actually combines features of multiple items from previous games. The ocular device, which replaces Snake's iconic eye patch, has three separate vision modes: night vision, thermal and zoom functionality. It also ties into Snake's radar, making it easier to discern enemies on a battlefield from friendlies at a quick glance by projecting their group affiliation above their head. What's also cool about the Solid Eye system is that it allows players to have the option to play through sections of the game with completely new camera angles and viewpoints. No longer do you have to focus solely on a top-down perspective with a camera angle that swings behind your shoulder when you fire. Now, players can opt to fire and move in either a first person or third person viewpoint at any time, which is an excellent option to have when you're looking to snipe a soldier in an elevated position.
However, just as Snake had to contend with stamina in previous games, he'll have two new gauges to contend with in the battlefield, his Psyche gauge and his Stress Gauge. Snake is not as young as he used to be, and these two meters help track just how the seasoned soldier is performing during his missions. His Psyche gauge measures how he is mentally reacting to the battlefield at all times – when things are relatively calm, he can aim and fire without difficulty, but if he performs physically exhausting moves, such as tumbling rolls or has to seek cover from large bursts of gunfire, he'll start to lose his concentration, making easy shots much harder. Snake will also feel the aches and pains of his age much more and will sometimes react to a sharp pain in his back or another physical symptom more frequently, indicating that he's being pushed way too hard. This correlates to Snake's Stress Gauge -- if this mental exertion continues for prolonged periods of time, his Stress Gauge starts to spike. If it goes too high, Snake will immediately enter what's known as a Combat High, where he'll suddenly snap into a moment of heightened accuracy with a gun while shrugging off inflicted damage for a small period of time. Unfortunately, after a combat high, Snake will crash, bottoming out his stress and psyche gauges. This can harm Snake's health as well as leave him vulnerable to incoming attacks.
Obviously, being in a vulnerable state against PMC soldiers is hazardous, but that doesn't compare to facing off against some of the tougher enemies in the Middle East, such as the bipedal walkers known as geckos. These metal monstrosities, which have dominated the previously released trailers of the game, can easily eliminate a platoon of men without showing a single scratch, and their agility at climbing walls, leaping barricades, and firing at individuals makes them a threat in both close combat and long range situations.
Another threat comes with Liquid's elite personal guard known as the FROGS. Another squad of superhumanly-enhanced soldiers shown in previously released trailers, this all-female squad boasts cybernetic suits that allow them to cling to walls and fire at their enemies (you) from any angle. Their speed and acrobatic skills help them avoid incoming fire, which makes them even more dangerous. This is especially true when you fight them in the remains of a dilapidated hotel rigged with booby traps, where each step could be Snake's last. Fortunately, he's not alone in this massive battle. Meryl and her Rat Patrol provide ample fire support.
This four man squad is composed of a hulking brute with a Mohawk named Jonathan, a bald sharpshooter named Ed, an "intestinally challenged" grunt named Johnny, and Meryl, who's surprised and not particularly thrilled to see Snake. But for both soldiers to accomplish their missions, they have to team up to repel Liquid's attacking squads and attempt to bury them under the hotel rubble.
Meryl isn't the only familiar face that Snake runs into during his initial mission. Otacon provides intelligence support from aboard a mobile drop ship, providing hints and back up via the Mark II. Otacon also briefs Snake on various situations during some of the game's numerous cutscenes, which offer an interesting take on Metal Gear history through flashback sequences. By pressing the L1 or X button prompts when they appear, Snake can trigger a sequence or image from a previous title, adding extra depth to topics being discussed at that point in time, which is an excellent way to fill in pieces of the complex puzzle that is the Metal Gear universe of the last 20 years.
These cutscenes are not the only way that players will acquire background information on the situations Snake faces. Between operations, Snake will receive detailed mission briefings on his next assignment, Liquid's movements, or the threat of various PMCs in the area he will be dispatched to.
Visually, Metal Gear Solid 4 is even more striking on the console than it has been in released trailers. We always had a sense that what Kojima was showing us was incredible footage, but the detail within the game itself is simply breathtaking. One example of this: when an explosion goes off near Snake, a fine coating of dust covers the camera, adding to the cinematic feel of the game. Another showcase of the striking graphics is the seamless transition between cutscenes and gameplay, many of which are only highlighted by a camera shift to indicate the cutscene has ended and gameplay has begun.
Another thing that stands out is the sound quality of the game, which is presented in Certified Dolby Digital Sound. The ambient battlefield noise provides a haunting backdrop to onscreen action, making you feel like just one part of a much larger conflict. The game's soundtrack is subtly shaded by local musical influences, as in the Middle East level, punctuated by a driving techno beat that builds when the guards become alerted to your presence and increases further if gunplay breaks out.
As I said earlier, there's only so much I can go into right now, but this is the system seller that we've all known Metal Gear Solid 4 was going to be. This preview has only scratched the surface; we haven't even described some of the bosses, radical and innovative game mechanics, or other features that make this title a fitting conclusion to one of the best franchises in gaming. As soon as we're able, we'll bring you more details on Metal Gear Solid 4, but for more information, check out our interview with Hideo Kojima here. (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/863/863842p1.html)
MGS4 Hideo Kojima Interview (http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/863/863842p1.html)
IGN: Would you consider these new chapters, stories or projects to be better suited for the PSP, or one of those things that the PS3 can best showcase?
Kojima: I don't know if I should say this, but we found out that Portable Ops, for instance, in Japan especially, has totally different target groups that the MGS series on the console platforms. Namely, the middle school students, from 13 to 15, are really fanatical with the machine itself -- look at Monster Hunter Portable, for instance. So if I were to, I would like to continue with this, to aim at those middle school students because they are so interested with MPO right now. I would continue to try to reach them.
I have a son in that particular age group, the 13-15 year old age group, and he's been with me watching me create the Metal Gear series. But he has always criticized it: 'Oh, Metal Gear is such a s****y game.' Until the point I released Portable Ops. So these kids are really into these handheld machines, and my son is really into Portable Ops as well: the use of the WiFi, the ability to play anywhere, bring it to school, etc. So it seems like the middle school kids are really, really having fun with the PSP. It might not be the Metal Gear series, but I would like to consider this audience because it's very important and new.

They could bring software emulation back...still dont get why it was dropped...surely each game could be emulated any how...my 40gb PS3 still plays PS1 games downloaded off PSN.
I mean like a modified version like the Xbox Originals. If the hardware can cope and Microsoft can do it, I don't see why Sony can't.
Theres one reason why Microsoft can do and Sony can't and its not to do with the technical side...The PS2 is still a viable platform whereas Xbox is a dead console and was pretty much as soon as 360 hit and Microsoft dropped support. If Sony started offering PS2 downloads retail would be mighty annoyed that it was digging into their sales...PS2 has had its day as the most successful home console its about time it died for a number of reasons. (would stop the glut of Wii/PS2 joint developed titles)

Why would Sony pass up a chance to make more money? Older games like MGS2 would obviously get a sales boost from a rerelease. I'm not saying offer new games, I mean for god's sake, MGS2 came out 7 years ago!! You can't seriously think retail would do/hold anything against Sony for giving them a 7 year timed exclusive.:p

Well...whilst what you say makes sense, but I've heard definitly in US that retailers are really pissed at sony for releasing Warhawk (yes a new game I know) on PSN as well so to suddenly offer PS2 downloads and effectively eradicate the used games market (which is growing all the time) would really piss them off.

Daft when you fought Mantis did you do the controller switching trick? Just wondering how it works on the PS3 with the pad being wireless.
Thats fair enough, but like you said Warhawk is a new game and that is definitely a major gripe for retailers. I'm not sure they even press new copies of MGS2.
Also its not like Sony, as much as I'd love it to happen, could release all their back catalog. They could maybe have just key title, like a platinum collection.
I'm certain this will happen pretty soon, maybe even with the PSN facelift. /dream :heh:

So, is Snake old because of something to do with Foxdie or because he was cloned? I remember reading somewhere it was because of Foxdie, but...
I'm no scientist, but my girlfriend assumed Snake was old because he was cloned. It's something to do with once something's been cloned, the cells remain the same age as those they came from so Snake may be 40 odd, but his cells are as old as Big Boss, meaning they are dying off now. In fact, Liquid mentions it in the second one when he hijacks Ray, saying Solid only has a few years left but he can live on through Ocelot's arm.
The aging cells thing makes more sense, but why do I remember reading about the Foxdie thing?

So, is Snake old because of something to do with Foxdie or because he was cloned? I remember reading somewhere it was because of Foxdie, but...
No idea why you remember it being Foxdie, but its definitely the aging. It's actually rooted in science to an extent, Dolly (the sheep that was cloned) got arthiritis at the age of 6 (I think) which is considered young leading people to believe that cloning may have caused the sheep to age faster than normal. Just incase you care:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/1742838.stm
Having said that, I think the revelation that Snake ages faster than normal may have come before the news of Dolly 's arthirits. So it could be a case of life imitating art, or Kojima is psychic. I prefer Kojima being psychic.

MGS4 EDGE details
A 'virtual range' will be included from the main menu. Here you can test the huge amount of weapons in MGS4 as well as the various advanced CQC techniques in the game.
The game will feature various details to play around with such as highly detailed and fashionable consumer gadgets. PsP (?) sunny does...
MGS4 has been 4 years in development.
There will be one hell of a big bang of a final to the game. Not a whimper. This will blow you away.
Snake is a slave to injections that keep him alive.
The sneaking play of the originals with it's air ducts and cameras has now become a fast pace living battlefield of traps and innovations.
The control system is 'revised and improved'
The Gekkou (the mechs with organic legs that make mooing sounds) will work in packs to hunt you down. They can sense past your optic camo if they think something is amiss.
Snake will have two new energy bars that makes Snakes advanced age impossible to ignore:
Stress: This rises in response to fight conditions. This can work with him, giving him hightened senses such as accuracy and sustained damage being halved. But if in this condition for too long, snake will crash causing him to become exposed to his illness. a drag on a cig will help him calm down however.
Psyche: This affects your general state of mind in the field. The balancing of these two bars will affect your progress.
You can use a camera to sneak away from your mission objectives and record incidents happening on the battlefield in secret. Some can be 'unpredictable and dangerous' There is something special about the camera this time around but EDGE were not allowed to say what.
There is a "surprising degree of explorative freedom" in the game. You can choose to engage in battles if you wish, or just ignore them. Friends and enemies can be gain this way if you do choose to help one side out.
Productions values transcend modern video games: A Hollywood grade surround sound and moving track score by Harry Gregson Williams. Electrifying cut scenes and a sense of closure "more suited to Return of the King than Halo 3".
There is so much tucked away in the game that some things won't be discovered until months or even years after your first play.
Kojima says: As for future MGS I would love to produce rather than direct. But as far as Snake is concerned, this is it. It's over".
:'( < tear for snake
And yum yum for this game ^_^ I'm excited.
Need to play MGS3 before getting this, just rebought/played the first two and watched a speedrun of the MSX version on Youtube.

'Gamers can also get access to the Metal Gear Online beta through the previously announced Metal Gear Saga preorder bonus program at participating retailers. The beta period runs from April 21 through May 5, but gamers will be able to download the program to their systems starting April 17.'

So I'm assuming the beta test is only for the US and Japan? Because I haven't heard anything about this yet in the UK.
Oh and his nose shrinks when you view it full size :)

Listen to the HoTness:
Good news!
Konami has told Eurogamer that it will be announcing its European Metal Gear Online beta plans "shortly".
Its comments follow (at a safe and undetectable distance) word earlier that sign-ups to the MGO beta in Japan appear to be inaccessible to those of us with Western-originating IP addresses.
The full game is due out around the world alongside Metal Gear Solid 4 on 12th June, so Konami had better get its skates on.

Awesome! :)
Amazing news! -
Yesterday, Sony Japan issued a release saying that the new and improved PlayStation Store would be coming April 15. It was assumed by many--but not officially confirmed at the time--that this was going to be a global launch, due to the nature and history of the store.
To remove any doubt, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has now confirmed that the "enhanced" PlayStation Store will indeed be coming on April 15.
It also had more good news for Europeans--on April 17, the first content update for two weeks will include the launch of Metal Gear Online Premiere Beta. The beta had already been confirmed for Japan, but those outside of the country had been left hanging.
The online beta will be running from April 21 to May 6, as an online multiplayer companion to Konami's highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which is due for release on June 12.
Two maps will be available for testers to explore: Blood Bath, and Groznyi Grad, each of which "requires unique strategies" for success. Up to 16 gamers are able to play together in each.
The full Metal Gear Online will be launched in the UK in June "as a starter pack" and will have five unique stages--three of which are not included in the beta--Ambush Alley, Urban Ultimatum, and Midtown Maelstrom.
In Ambush Alley, trenches and sandbags have been placed in an arena built for short- to medium-range combat, whereas Blood Bath will be a two-tier battle. Groznyi Grad will take place in the expansive Shagohod development complex that was in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, where players can employ catapults to propel themselves to different parts of the environment. Midtown Maelstrom is set in some Middle Eastern alleyways that will feature in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, while Urban Ultimatum will take place on the rooftops.
There will be five different game modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture, Base, and Sneaking missions.
Also included in the April 17 PlayStation Network update will be Warhawk: Operation Broken Mirror, and two sets of downloadable content for Lair: the Diabolical Dragons pack, and Skyguard Upgrade pack. The latest Grand Theft Auto IV trailer will also be available, along with "a collection" of other trailers, and a Sega Superstars Tennis demo.
So I'm assuming we don't need to preorder to get the beta then?

Heres what us Euro peeps have been waiting for...
Konami has said the European Metal Gear Online beta will run from 21st April to 6th June.
The client will be available to download from 17th April, as Sony told us earlier.
Two of the five maps from the full game will be available to mess around on: Blood Bath and Groznyi Grad.
The former is two-tiered scenario, while the latter is that big (and fantastically named) Shagohod complex from MGS3 that has human catapults to throw you around.
The other three joining these at launch are Ambush Alley with its trenches and sandbags; Midtown Maelstrom with its Middle Eastern alleyways; and Urban Ultimatum with its rooftops.
Metal Gear Online will be released alongside Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on 12th June around the world.
It lets 16 of you fire bullets at each other online, in the hope that one will penetrate and cause massive internal bleeding and lead to death. And then respawn.

Well in the US they're getting codes when they pre-order, but I can't find anything saying something similar for europe, so we don't know yet, but it seems that way.

All you need to do is to go the PSN store and download it and away we go!

Even though I don't even have a PS3 the hype surrounding this game compelled me to play Metal Gear Solid 2 again on Hard.
I think the awesomeness of this game can be summed up in this quote:
"I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hara-Kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!" - You're so crazy Colonel... Or should I say GW!
I think I'll start playing The Twin Snakes at some point soon, then Snake Eater inevitably.

bad news about Metal Gear Online Beta.
The minor annoyance:
1) Some people have beta cards that misprinted the code and only have 9 or 11 characters instead of 12.
2) Konami registration is broken. It won't accept a lot of people's registrations because it says that Konami IDs or email addresses are already registered when they're not.
3) Requires 2 separate IDs on top of a regular PSN name.

thought that was just for US. Thought all of EU was getting it.
I'm kinda getting worried about whether I will actually understand the plot, keep hearing tidbits on podcasts etc... and it sounds like I've missed a hell of a lot since I played metal gear solid.
Any UK limited editions of this?
How many of us think that Konami will release an improved version by October?

Nobody smart.
There won't be one until at least Summer 2009 and I doubt that probably Fall would be a better guess.

There is some kind of flashback button in the cutscenes.
I'm gonna start MGS3 on the weekend and maybe replay 2 the following weekend.
Edit: Glad I don't pre-order:

what in MGS4?
Yeah, they said that during certain scenes you'll be able to press a button that will bring up a flashback from one of the previous games. Cool for those who haven’t played the other games recently (or at all)
what in MGS4?
Like Helmsly said. I hope it doesn't disrupt the cutscenes too much because even though I just completed the first two I'll view them anyway.
Also you get Drebin points for viewing them which go toward buying weapons.

Its funny, im pretty excited that Daft will be playing MGS3 soon, man I love that game sooooo much and I cant wait to hear what he thinks about it. If you dont at least like the story I may have to hunt you down! Beware of cardboard boxes in your area, you have been warned.....
EDIT: Just found the E3 trailer for MGS3 when it was first announced. The MGS 2/3 theme music is one of the most, if not the most, epic piece of gaming music ever. I must have watched this trailer like 50 times when it first got shown.

Haha!! I was going to start it tonight but I thought it might be better if I set aside the weekend. I'm really looking forward to it and I will beware of the boxes......*looks around suspiciously*
HOLY SHIT! That trailer is AWESOME!! You're right the music rocks.

Well thats annoying, my girlfriend has been on nights so I have been sat waiting for her to get up so I can go in our room and play on it!
Can I just get something right about MGO, it doesn't use your PS3ID in anyway? you have to have a Konami ID and a Game ID for it...seems stupid that one of the biggest releases for the console doesn't use their own online infrastructure.
EDIT;
update from ps3fanboy;
Today was supposed to be the launch of the Metal Gear Online beta. However, overwhelming demand has caused Konami to delay the release. Now, beta participants can join in on the fun this Friday, April 25th -- barring no serious problems.
The European beta test has also been suspended, but Konami plans to "restart it once [they] stabilize the servers." As a result of this delay, the end of the beta program has been pushed to June 11th. While we're confident that everything will be perfect for the now-delayed launch of the beta, Konami does note that "it may change due to unforseen circumstances."

That's just the motherfucking intro.
On a serious note though I think that time is just the length of all the cutscenes. Still I wonder if that time includes codec conversations as well...
