View Full Version : The Cycle of Cool

Isnt it strange how things go in and out of popularity?
I bring up this point today after thinking about it for a few days when it dawned on me regarding (in this case) a word.
Now, when I was younger this word was used quite often as the in word, around the mid-90s I suppose, but this word has come back as cool, and it is "Rubbish"
To say that word it is now cool or "in" as some of you may say. This has been an approximate 10 year cycle.
Can you think of anything similar to this?

Nooo! Lol. Yeah but when people say "Oh thats crap" well at the moment its cool and the in word to say "Oh thats rubbish"
I'd like to get the following back into standard cool usage:
Balderdash
Poppycock
Flim-flam

I was debating whether this topic was going to be about fads or a really awesome bike or some sort whilst it was loading.
As for 'Rubbish', I didn't know it went out of fashion, though I will admit I have started using it alot more in the last 5 years, cos a mate of ours at school used to say it alot in his strange accent that sounded a bit west country farmer(he was not from a family of west country farmers, and is in fact half belgian, which is why we found it amusing), so we used to say 'Rubbesh' alot to each other, and now we use it alot.
I've also wondered for a while, is the word cool actually still cool? I still use it, but thats cos I'm from the 90s cool generation, I don't have much interaction with younger kids, but I wonder if they still use it. My other favourite words are awesome, wicked sometimes(has this gone out too?), brilliant, excellent, and sometimes even bad. Then some other general slang which isn't really words.

I like inventing new words and slipping them in to convos, so that people dont notice then they start saying it. Its win.

Exactly. This is the best thing in the world.

I thought rubbish was just a kind of normal everyday word. I had no idea it was ever in, or out, of fashion.

I've been using rubbish all my life, tend to use it as not to swear. (ie at work/around kids)
But yeah using retro words can be fun, in the hope people will say them. Not heard any of my friends say "punch snow" yet. Keep trying. Although they often now say -sies (which yes was Scrubs but ah well)

People think i'm very strange when i say stuff like that irl ^_^

Forshame.
Rubbish was never an "in" or "out" word. Also I think the word cool is viewed as uncool.

I have been saying "lol", "lmao" (sounds more like "lamo" when I say it out loud though) and "meh" to people over the last year, and most of my friends just laugh at me. Me and a guy at work spent our final week there, saying "GTFO" to a load of people! Obviously, the majority of them didn't understand what it meant. The interent has defintley had an influence on my vocal vocabulary.
I say "Awesome" instead of cool btw.

Quite a few people at sixth form have recently started saying "CBA". as in "see bee ay". It's really annoying.

A trend I seen now is people being ever increasingly retarded - for example, not being able to pay ANY FUCKING ATTENTION IN ENGLISH class, and thus saying things like "your rubbish" actually meaning "you're rubbish" - you are rubbish, instead of your, which is possessive. Your rubbish is in my fucking way, for example, is a correct usage.
Oh and then someone is always like HURR GRAMMAR NAZI LOL, or I'M NOT IN SCHOOL NOW, like they're trying to make up for the fact they sucked, I don't get this mindset, apparently it's cool to not know? Good work.

Rubbish has always been in as far as i know, i used to say it a lot of the time when i was younger as well as other non-swear words which included blinking heck and boulder-dash amongst others. These words are now "out" as it were from my area and in are all swear words really, which are nearly used in every sentence when i am out and about.

Today my supervisor crossed out a "that" in my essay and said it should have been a "which". I pointed out that this was in fact incorrect, because it was introducing a restrictive, rather than non-restrictive, relative clause. She didn't know what these were, but still maintained it should have been "which"... It's ironic really because nowadays either is considered correct anyway.
Anyway, how is cool uncool? I thought that was the one constant. (other than swearwords)
Rubbish is a pretty standard word.
This is how I swear/play ProEvo:
Take a word and add -tard to it.
For example:
F*cktard
Knobtard
Tw*ttard
Jizztard
Mongtard
Cocktard
Spaktard
Never fails.
Rummy

Haha Daft, I do the tard thing with some words too(fucktard, spaktard, mongtard :D and sometimes gaytard), though I've not heard/noticed anyone else do it. I also use a few arguably racial words, but I'll leave those off the forums. One time my mate messaged me though with his own word he'd made up, and I still use it, the brilliance that was Motherchubber.

Motherchubber!! I like it! *stolen* :heh:
I wouldn't use gaytard because the thing about the -tard use is that it has to have a bit of a linguistic snap to it, like a plosive sound. I think fucktard is the best but its always good to mix it up a bit.
My latest one I've started to use is chavtard. Not quite as biting but still pretty fun to use! :D
Chair and I make up funny words. Ones I can think of right now.
"Sheena!" -instead of swearing, etc. Also the name of the tuckshop lady, and often is used when referring to the lack of money to buy anything at said tuckshop, or if the tuckshop is closed. Double-entendre wannabe.
"****/y/bunny/wipe" same as above, without the tuck shop bit.
"Lezz'd" same as above.
And other funny ones I make up on the spot.
The word rubbish as pointed out by more than a few people in this thread was never really in or out....It has always been in my dictionary, but usually gets replaced by the word 'Shit' (I am a trooper like swear person).
The only word I can think of in recent times that has had a minor revival is 'Ace'...In my Junior school years this word was used to saturation point until someone introduced the meaning to be an abbreviated form of 'A crap effort'.
"My Rubiks cube is ace"
"Haha....You mean its a crap effort"
*Slap*
A word that still is a joy to use although politically incorrect is 'Spacker'
Would love to see that make a true return as it rolls off the tongue so easily and gets the point across.
One phrase more addictive than smack once it habitually takes over:
"you fancy a beer ?"
"Yeah man"
The net introduces so many words these days its unreal, but most are netspeak or txtspeak so they can be difficult to introduce, although 'for the win' occasionally creeps into rl conversation with me

Sweet! Dude! Two more I use, Sweet as a nut sometimes. Mint. Rank. I dunno if they count really. I take your point on gaytard Daft, but if you can manage to really get a cutting emphasis on the t, it's sometimes all right. It's not the best of the tards though, probably the worst. I don't use fucktard much, dunno why, but I do like just mixing random words together, or a random word with a swear word, or two swears, or just two really awesome words, works best with single syllable ones though.

"thats relay shem" (more of a local term, i think the "ballymenians" of the forum might understand)
: peace: ..fully understood.. but 'relay' is a word you just never hear anymore.. we need to start a revival!
You never hear people talking about being 'rare' either.. (not meaning actually rare, but meaning that something's 'wick gay'.. or 'uncool'.. whatever :heh:) ..my cousins used it all the time..
I remember way back in primary school one of the main words was 'lethal' ..definitely not as popular now :heh:

I like saying proper British words. "Rubbish" and "Bother" included.
I've found myself saying "cool" recently, much to my own bother. (Ay, see.) I'm trying to say "class" and other various British words instead. I regularly say "bloody", because I love to say it.
I'm trying to change my vocabulary so it appeases the older generations.

I use Lol in my normal speech along with For the lols, For the Win, Epic, Win, Fail and Meh! :D
I also say cool more than i thought. :)
I use cool a lot. But usually just as a generic word to say when someone tells me something, I didn't listen properly and it looks like they expect a positive response from it.

Haha, awesome, I do that too. I say cool all the time actuallly...
"Right, Ok, cool, see you there" etc etc
I also now say "awesome" loads in real life after getting it from people saying it on the internet. It's coming right back into fashion.
And "beast" is a classic word from about 4 years ago which I still use, it means "awesome" basically.
