I am surprised there isn't a thread about this game.
Anyway, even though I don't own a 360, I did have a chance to play the game today and all I can say is wow.
This game alone has nailed the coffin for me to go out and get a 360.
So discuss about this game ^_^

*Is playing through the game right now*
It starts of a little slow, very slow infact, but after about 5-6 hours it does pick up and get interesting. I'm on disc 2 now and can say I'm enjoying it. Doesn't seem to be that many weapons though, I didn't get a new sword till like 6 hours in :O

Very excited about getting this, I'm a massive fan of JRPG's (I grew up watching my friend who was like 5 years older than me playing FF7) and Blue Dragon was my first JRPG in years!
I really enjoyed BD, still haven't got Eternal Sonata, but I think LO is next on my list as it appeals to me more than ES, and I just found out that MistWalker is behind it so yay again ^_^

10-02-2008, 12:39 PM
I've just started the second disc and I'm really, really enjoying this. For one thing it's not nearly as po-faced as I thought it was going to be — Jansen is very entertaining — and the bits that are serious are handled surprisingly well for a videogame. The Dreams are especially well done, although they do make me wish other parts of the translation could live up to their standard.
Mechanically it strikes me as very much like Final Fantasy X — i.e. traditional but very slick — and whilst I've a few issues with the fighting system I've yet to get annoyed by random battles, which is always a good sign.
Obviously I've quite a ways to go before I can offer a proper judgement, but from what I've played so far anyone that can still enjoy the PlayStation era Final Fantasy games should get a real kick out of this.

It must have crap loads of cut-scenes and a vast amount of music and voice acting
Domstercool
11-02-2008, 09:18 AM
There's 3 voice languages and the cutscenes are in High-Def, hence DVDs not the best media for it.
Is the voice acting good? I was originally thinking of doing the usual Japanese with English subs but the English voice acting looks pretty good from what I've seen.

Blue Dragon was very underrated on there though.
I'm not too impressed with the story and characters so far but the "thousand year of dreams' are well written. So far the story is poorly executed and I've come across alot of filler that is used to extend the game.
Gameplay wise it's great though.

Ice Magic Beast? Is that the dino thing in the ice place area? If it is then I basically casted all shield and all barricade, then used my attackers casting the magic along with the magic casters too. Hopefully you'll have atleast the middle class for fire, Flara I think it is called. If you need health, then use your attackers, since their magic isn't as good as the proper mages. Buying some good healing items is a good advice, since items always get the first move, no matter whose next.

I think I already beat that boss. I on the boss after you get through the caves. the one where it seems that only Macks attacks do any damage.
Domstercool
19-02-2008, 01:17 PM
I think I might know which one you mean. You have to cast lots of ground spells on it to kill it, trying adding ground stuff to your weapons, and cast Shield and Barricade, as the water attack it does is a pain in the arse. If the team don't survive one attack of the water move, then do some levelling up if you can, as you should use some healing items right after to make sure you don't die if it does it again.

It is a good rpg, there's no doubt about it there. It also feels very Final Fantasyish, which for me I don't mind as I like that series anyway. The problem I thought with the game was the story was too slow. The first disc isn't much going on in the action, it seems to be alot more about gaining memories, getting to know kaim and some of the other characters. After then it does start to get alot more interesting.
As the game progresses you really do start to get into the characters and feel for them. I felt sad when certain things happen, oh and the Thousand Year Dreams are some of the best written short stories out there. I didn't know you could feel this emotional from text. :O
8/10 seems perfect for it.
Awesome! I can't wait. It sounds like actually getting into the game is the hard part.
Domstercool
21-02-2008, 09:58 PM
Yeah, that probably is a good way of saying it. Especially when meeting the first boss, you might find it seems a little difficulty, but it isn't really. You just have to find the right magic and punish it. After that the game starts a get a little easier and doesn't require as much once you click with it.
Cool, I haven't played a big RPG for AGES now! (Unless you count Dragon Quest IV for the DS...completed 6 times and counting. :indeed:)

Having played up to Disc 4 I'm just forcing myself to play cos it just reached a new height of ridiculous lack of direction.
Disc 2 was bad enough with it's dungeon crawling questing with no plot behind it wondering around because it took me there.
Disc 3 was much better it has it's best moments in the game despite being cliche but things in there could of been done alot better.
The dreams are probably the one thing keeping you distracted from the poor storytelling in the main plot.
The battle system is fun but nothing interesting behind it's minus the flashy moves like Limit breaks. The aim ring is a good idea they've used but needs a bit more especially with magic users, a bit more customization too would of been great with the limited skill/skill link system.

Got this today, and am about 5 hours through. Stuck on the second boss atm - may need to level grind a bit to progress.
Some good and bad impressions: Art, music and storytelling are impressively refined. I'm getting to know the chracters quite quickly; and with the help of the short stories, I'm beginning to piece together snippets of Kaim's past.
Also, I'm really loving the game's fully realised world, with it's own unique magicpunk(?) architecture and populace. The FMV sequences show this off best - the dramatic camera angles and extravagant bloom effects e.t.c give the game an epic, interactive-movie like feel. The art direction - i feel - is extremely polished, (the Uhran(sp?) capital is the best example). The level of graphical fidelity, however, does drop considerably when your questing. I noticed blurry textures and just a lack of variety in the environments.
There's also alot of plot holes at the moment and a lack of substantial content - but I guess all will become revealed in due time.
The battle system imo is a bit flaky. I mean, it's adeqaute, but I find the targeting-ring mechanic a bit tedious and trvial. There's also a bit of a lack of variety in physical attacks. The magical component is fleshed out; but I would have liked a myriad of blade techniques for Kaim to employ, to spice things up a bit.
All in all, i'm really enjoying this game, thus far. There's plenty of time to expand on the plot; and when the combat front starts to heat up, it will feel a more rounded RPG to me - maybe a bit too much tarting about in the first few hours, but I guess it's necessary to introduce the story.
Can't wait to play more!

Theres some points in this game where there should be a huge warning across the screen that says "DONT PLAY ANY MORE UNLESS YOU HAVE A SPARE 3 HOURS" cos some points have cut scenes that go on forever then no save only to have another cut scene.

Nice review mate.
"like a lot of games on the Xbox 360 that use the Unreal Engine 3, the game suffers from some frame rate problems from time to time. It’s mainly noticeable at the start of a battle sequence or during cut-scenes when it will randomly choke under the pressure."
I notice that all too often. Sometimes the framerate chokes to a standstill and the disc error comes up.

I found the worms to be really easy when I finally did them, although it did require a little grinding.
If you've been checking chests and such you should have an Anti-Paralysis accessory. If you have Kaim and Seth learn that ability and then equip the bangle on Jansen then that takes case of one major annoyance. During the actual battle all I did was have the immortals focus on cutting down the bugs and constantly use Jansen's wind magic on the worms.
Using the above method I only got hit by the worms' paralysis blast once, so you could probably get away with not bothering to learn Anti-Parlysis if you wanted to risk it.

I just kept casting Prism and used the other two to attack the little dude or the big worm if the other guys are dead. Did it second time once I figured out a plan of attack.
Finally got around to buying this, even though I've still got a lot of unplayed games around. Seen my bro play it a bit, reeks of Final Fantasy, which is definately a good thing in my books. I hope it hooks me longer than FFXII though, I doubt I'll ever complete that.

A shooter by Mistwalker:P Yer, start with Lost Odyssey or you'll burn yourself out with ES.

What level are you at? I'm at level 18 and I just attacked them normally with Kaim and Seth and cast Prism/healing spells with Jansen and killed them easily.

Level 17! Do you know exactly what you did in what order?
I can't seem to get random battles in that area, too level up!

I remember that part, they do hit pretty hard, make sure to cast All-Shield at the start, then start bashing away, don't worry about Prism, just keep Jansem casting Zephyr while Kaim and Seth are bashing away :heh:

You can also go the Crimson Forest to level up a bit before hand, it turns out I was actually at level 19 when I did it, and it went something like this...
Kaim: Attack foot soldier A
Seth: Attack foot soldier A (should now be dead)
Jansen: Cast Prism
Kaim: Attack foot soldier B
Seth: Attack foot soldier C
Jansen: Use Prism
Soldiers B and C should now be dead and the horsemen weakened
After that I just focused on one horseman at a time, I had to use an Angel Plume at one point as well after Seth was charged twice in the same go.

Cool! Thanks!
Yay 6 hours in now ^_^
Issues with the Disc and stuff seemed to be over . . . for now. . .

GAH!!
Got past the snakes and the army dudes after, only for a disc read error before i got to a save point!! grrrrrrr . . .
Did it happened in the prison cells? That's were I got a disc error.
Fire Emblem didn't keep my interested very long so I figured I should give this one a try. Only after a couple of hours I could easily say this is much better than Fire Emblem or any rpg I have played in a very long time. The story, the art, the voice acting, the cast = perfect. I'm on disc two and played for 22 hours and probably starting on the last dungeon on the disc based on what you say about 10 hours a disc. My favourite dream is Upstreamers, but A Hero's Return is great too. Are some more I enjoyed but I don't remember the names.

My brother's been playing it, though...

This Disc Error stuff is interesting. I got the Asian Version and I never once had a problem with disc read errors. Hmm

How many disc errors?
Thinking of trying to RROD my 360 cos of disc read errors in this, DMC4, Oblivion, OB, and blue dragon . . .

Four. Three of them the 360 was unable to read the disc and the fourth it froze during loading a save. Fortunatly, nothing was damaged.

I have finally got around to starting this and so far I have enjoyed what I have played. I really like the dream stories, even if some of them are a tad long. I also think Jansen is freaking hilarious :)

I tell you what is annoying me at the moment about this game and that is the LACK of random battles.
When playing a traditional JRPG I usually like to grind my levels whenever possible but it takes ages to get into a fight in this game. Do the enemies come more frequently later in the game or does is stay at this pace?

Whats the deal with not being able to level up in this game? I knew I was heading for a boss battle so I thought I would hang around and get some exp to level up. I got into a battle and at the end of the fight I pretty much got sod all when it came to experience points. Is there a level cap for each area or something?
Jansen is still hilarious!
I've just started playing this and wondering does the tone ever lighten up, I'm finding the story difficult to get into because it's lacking emotion and well, fun, so far. I hope it picks up.
I just want something like FF9 again :D

I really struggled with the 1st disc as nothing much happens but the story picks up pace on the 2nd disc.
What I really like is how the kids in the game, Mack and Cooke, arent the main heroes. Too many JRPGs have the kids battle to save the world while the adults step back. Its nice to see the kids acting like kids, getting scared and upset at various times during the game, makes a nice change. :)

I traded this is. It wallows in far too many genre clichés to warrant interest in the protagonists admittedly interesting plight. I found most of the supporting cast to be so teeth grindingly annoying that I wanted to hunt down those responsible and kneecap them.
the art was good, as was some of the writing (the dreams, really. the rest was less good) but the world felt sterile, lobbed together and boring.

Im at the point in the game now where I can go finish it off but I want to beat the sidequests first.
The side bosses are very easy to beat, well Persona kept beating me until I read that you could just throw Flarus bombs at it, killed it in 2 rounds :) All I need to do now is kill Holy Beast ( grabs Groundus bombs ) and the Blue Dragon before I set off for the hell that is the Temple of Enlightenment.

Yup I gave up after about 6 hours in, I traded it in towards UT3, I needed some adrenaline fueled action.
I have a rather short attention span at the moment.

Well I love the game, feels very much like Final Fantasy X with a vastly less annoying lead.
It's a good return to traditional turn based RPG's which are few and far between these days and it fills the gap that I've had since the release of FFX.
With Square-Enix heading more to the action RPG realm I'm hoping Mistwalker release more traditional RPG's.
Hopefully they'll dump Blue Dragon though, talk about annoying characters sheesh.

I spent a few hours this morning getting 5 of my characters ( all the immortals and Sed ) to level 99 to take on the DLC boss. Apparently he is a bit of a nightmare to beat even at level 99!
I also beat the hell out of the Immortal in the Backyard this morning and after that I have been learning the skills for everyone. I thought my game had glitched as I didnt get the skills achievy but it seems im missing one which is a relief. Im about to pop out but I will attempt to get it once I return.
Overall its been a productive day on LO :)

Completed this today, finally. Got all the achievements except Treasure Trove (which honestly is insane), which I am pretty happy with. Skill master on the immortals is frankly enough effort as it is.
Great RPG.

Yeah, alot of people miss the Treasure Trove achievement. Its crazy how you cant miss even 1 item during the whole game and then even if you do you dont know where it is! My mate didnt get it either and as soon as I got it I sent him a message on Live, needless to say a few savoury words got sent my way :)

Got this game the other day, really liking it. Just one question, has it froze a lot for anyone else?
I experienced three crashes, two during loading screens. It seems to take its toll on my 360.

It never crashed for me in the 90+ hours I played it, although I have heard a fair few people say it does crash. Sometimes during the loading of battle it can stutter a bit, but that's the lot for me.

Off topic and purely out of curioisty but how many hours, HoT, would you say you spend playing games a week on average?

Just went an hour without saving, then I managed to get to a save point, saved. Five minutes later, enter Crash Number 4. Just when I get into the game it kicks me in the balls.

Just finished Disc 1. And I'm thoroughly enjoying the game so far. It's like a 'golden' era final fantasy games with better graphics. Each character I have so far are pretty cool, and the story is interesting.
A few less crashes and I'd be over the moon, hopefully Disc 2 doesn't hate me.

I'm playing this now as well, I just finished disc 1 and I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. No crashes yet although the frame rate stumbles occasionally but that doesn't really bother me. Oh those giant worms? *punches wall* fuckers took me like 15 tries.

Yes, I would agree but at the same time I feel it has a lot less of the annoying cliche's than the other games and I find it very bearable. So far the characters haven't really annoyed me except for Mack and the humour actually made me laugh sometimes (like when Jensen meets the queen and their interactions thereafter). At first I was a little dissapointed that Kaim wasn't the only immortal, I felt that it cheapened the effect but I was actually quite pleased with the turn it took later.
So, I'm pressing on and enjoying it along the way.
EDIT: Make that disc 3. That was a Saturday night well spent. :x
