I searched for the previous thread regarding this, and it turns out it's quite a far way back, with the last post in September...
I made the conscious decision to start a new thread, rathering than rejuvenating a dead one.
I bought the Wii version of this a few months back, and I've been playing this on and off. This is the first time I've ever played this game, as I previously promised myself that I'd play 2 and 3 before this, but I managed to get this at a decent price so that went straight out of the window!
So far, I'm loving this game. My favourite weapon from the Resi games is the shotgun. There's nothing more satisfying than getting a headshot and really taking out your frustration on something. :D
Last year, my Christmas game was Twilight Princess. This year, it may well be this. Playing this at 3 oclock in the morning, in a house with total silence, its not bad. :D
Views and opinions, please. Remember to keep spoilers in tags.

Funnily enough, I bought the Wii version of this yesterday. Slightly better version of one of the best games ever created. I'm going to return it though, cause I got it just to play the separate ways thing, and I've completed the game on Professional 7 times before anyway. Just wait till the regenerators...they're scary as fuck.

I absolutely adore this game!
I bought the Wii Version when it came out in the Summer and played on it solid until i had completed it. I hadn't owned or played the game for more than about 10 minutes before and the Wii controls added to it creating an even better version than before.
Every moment in the game is enjoyable and i was on the edge of my Bean Chiar when the regenerators where hunting me down. :)
The most tense part for me (on the wii version) was when i had 1 bit of health left and no ammo and i was trapped on a lift with priests coming from all corners, slashing them with the knife trying to avoid there swings of the maces. I just about managed to get through it. :D
All the Boss fights are great and each one feels like the last! The weaponary is awesome and i love all the different ways in which you can kill the enemies with.
Probably one of my favourite games. :yay:

It was from gamestation for around 25 quid, if I remember correctly.

Haha. :)
My favourite bit so far was:
Where you and Luis are in the house and people just keep coming in through the windows. I baracaded them with the bookshelves or whatever they were, and they keep coming. That was such a fun part, it reminded me of Night of the Living dead. :)
And, my first ever decapitation. Getting chainsawed in the head was so funny. :)

I may pick this up at some point - it's one of those fringe games that I'd buy if I had nothing else to play. Can't believe you've never played it before!

Ah yes, much like your first pint, you never forget your first decapitation.

I ended up paying £18.50 for mine as i had some points on my GAME card. :D
My first decapitation was great as i was hiding from the chainsaw man on the roof looking down at the village below to see where he was to suddenly hear this loud WHRRRRRRR!!! VRRMMMM!!!
i turned round to see him behind me already with the chainsaw in my neck! by the time i reacte it was too late and my head was already rolling on the floor...
That was quite a scary moment! didn't expect it to happen. :)

I think everone laughed when Dr Salvador first killed them with the chainsaw :heh: Such an awesome gaming moment! My friend say's that Dr Salvador didn't kill him on his first go and that he killed him with a knife. I think he may not be telling the truth :indeed:
Your favourite bit so far, is also mine. When I feel I'm going to beat that chapter, I sometimes just give myself up to the Ganado's just so that I can re-play it again! There are many more set-pieces in the game that are equally as awesome as this tho, so happyhunting.

A truly magnificent game and a very good Wii-port makes it all the more awesome.
The pointer actually adds a lot of fun although harming the atmosphere a bit because of the aiming circle.
I played it on GC and Wii and I'm glad I got it for Wii as well.

The enemies in this game are great.
...chapter 3-1, I think, where Ashley is captured again through that funky wall mechanism. I was just in the sewers with these cool little...grasshopper type things, that would attach to the walls and spit acid! They kept going invisible and I couldnt understand why I couldnt see them. I gotta admit, that was my tensest moment in the game so far...all I could hear in the sewers were my steps, and then theres, and then I'd aim, and then it would jump and acid me, and my face would melt.

This is easily my favorite Wii game, which is sad since its a port... But whatever its a lot more fun on the Wii then on the GC.
Just wait till you start unlocking all the awesome guns and costumes! All though it makes the game 10x easier, its way more fun to go through the game with an infinite ammo handcannon (that completely tosses everybody!) and Ashley wearing her second costume.

I loved this game when I owned it on the PS2. Played almost all of it again just to show a couple of friends just how awesome it was (they were too scared to play it on their own yet we played it with the lights off) Best bit: shooting fish at that only to get a very rude guest give me a huge surprise. Scared the hell out of me.

Thats my faourite bit aswell especially doing it on purpose when people who haven't played it before watch me play.
I gotta say, i'm not one for replaying many games but i've completed this many times on the cube and same again on the Wii. Also i thought the controls were perfect on the cube till i played the Wii edition.

This thread makes me want to replay Resi. I never did the Ada side missions or replay with the new guns and stuff because by the time I finished this I moved straight on to Bioshock. And now with Christmas I'm not gonna have time to do it.
This summer, I'm gonna power-replay through a whole bunch of shooters / adventure games. I'm thinking this, Bioshock, Halo, Super Mario Galaxy and GRAW2 off the top of my head. Possibly Metroid Prime and Mass Effect if I enjoy them when I get them for christmas :)
Wow, I can't wait for summer when I have time to do that...

Yeah its a fantastic little game. Would have been great if they added online leaderboards for your scores.
As for your last update Flinky yeah those things are freaky. They also annoyed the hell out of me because I kept jumping everytime one appeared in front of me. Needless to say random shooting took place when that happened :)

Me and my flatmates played through this the other month, handing over the controller everytime each of us was killed. One of the most intense games I've played, the Wiimote additions work really well for the most part.
Flink, wait until you get to chapter five, get's really fucking insane at that point. We started playing through the professional mode about a week ago, before Uni finished. Some bits took us ages to complete and we've still got the most intense chapters to play through.
Certainly one of the best games I've played recently, apart from the story and the dialogue of course which is all dreadful.

I was playing this, whilst on MSN to Haden.
I have just started Chapter 4-1, and the conversation kinda went like this:
Haden: So where are you?
Me: Luis has just been killed. LUIS! LUUUUUUIIIIIISS!
Haden: Haha.
Me: Ok, I cant get down to her.
Haden: Shoot the locks?
Me: Ok *ashley is unlocked*
Me: Omg, I'm controlling Ashley.
Me: Wtf! All I have is a flashlight. Its dark. *solves puzzle* AHHHHHHHH! Those armour things just came after me and I couldnt see more than 2 feet infront of me! WTF!
Haden: Ahhahahahahaha
Definitely my most tense moment. I was running out of that room like a madman, but I wasn't quite sure where I was or where I was going. :(

Your getting close to what is, in my opinion the tensest and scariest part of the game. Good luck!
I have just started Chapter 4-1, and the conversation kinda went like this:
Ah the Castle.
Because of the length and dullness of it, I'd give the whole game an 8/10. The Ashley part of it was great, though.

That's the best chapter in the whole game. Tensest and scariest precisely cause you feel naked after so long in the game.

What the hell?? The Castle is the best area in the game, you call it dull and remove points from the game because of it?? It has a great layout (the winding path that you take through it), the best graphics in the game (the carpets, the statues, the chandeliers, great colours), great set-pieces (like the labyrinth, the water hall, the fiery room, etc) and the best boss of the game too. How can someone say the Castle dumbs the game down...?

The castle was amazing tbh; very well thought out. There were some awesome set pieces, and the maze was incredibly scary.
Best thing about the game? I'd say Mercenaries. It's bloody ace. And on top of that, Weskers music was simply amazing :heh:
Hope you're enjoying it flinky!

Wesker was without a doubt the best on Mercenaries. Split kick was an instant kill for pretty much any enemy. I think I racked up 178,000 on the Village level with him.
Man, that game, everytime you think that it can't stun you with yet another amazing location and enemies, it kicks your ass again.

I have to say this game is pissing me off right now. Dunno why but I am dying a heck of a lot more than I ever did on the PS2 version and im playing almost exactly the same way on the same difficulty section.
I have only reached the castle section where you have to kill a ridiculous amount of enemies and I think I have died as many times as I did throughout the whole of the PS2 version.
Have they made the game harder or something because I know almost everything that will happen, yet i seem to be in less control of situations.
Utterly confused and a tiny bit tired of being instantly killed by a flying scythe after killing so many los illuminados and supposedly getting to the easy bit of the horrible crank room

Didn't the PS2 version have less enemies?
Haha, that sounds like the dreaded Water Hall to me. :D That and the Sewers (that come right after it...) are the most difficult sections of the game.

I hated that room so much. the best thing to do was just hide in the room at the back for what seemed like 10minutes, killing all the groups of enemies one at a time...
Took ages i swear..
That's one way to do it, but doesn't that consume all your ammo?
Another thing that annoys is that the game actually gets easier if you die a certain number of times. Like, if you die for example 4 or 5 times, when you lower the ramp there will no longer be the 3 or 4 scythe monks coming down it. And I think there won't be any archers in the two balconies either. So you feel kind of cheated if you pass the area but it's a dumbed down version of it because you died a few times. This dumbing down should be optional, not forced.
Deathjam
30-12-2007, 08:55 PM
so THATS why the archers did not appear! Was very confused by that. I really think they made the game harder because I even though i get pure headshots, I have been hit by the enemy countless times. And I have tried many strategies for that damn room. Dont have enough ammo to sit in that room for 10 mins i think. After I calmed down, i think Ill give it another bash.

It doesn't waste ammo if you stand infront of the door (stopping them from entering). Then, when they're all next to door you can open it quickly to stun them. I usually just use the door to kill em and save up me ammo tbh.
I think the game was made a bit harder on the Wii version, because the controls have been easier. You can now easily pick off enemies far away, which would have been a lot harder on the PS2/GC versions. To compensate it, same levels have a few archers more I think.
I didnt notice till I got to Mercenaries' Castle level. On the first plateau where you find a timer and a few barrels, you notice there'll be archers shooting down on you. They weren't there in the GC version.
Resident Evil 4 is definitely one of my all time fave games. The Wii version is just the icing on the cake. The game is just so much fun, nicely paced and so diverse. And the Mercenaries mini-game is just brilliant. I've spent as much time honing my skills there as in the main game.

Oh my fucking jesus. I was playing this about 5 mins ago whilst talking to Haden on MSN and he just had to listen to me whilst I crapped my pants.
Ok, so, Salazar chucks you down a big hole, right. He says he has some friends after you.
I think, hmm, I can take anything.
So, I keep going, and it switches to first person monster mode (red vision) and it shows something is after me. I said this to Haden, who then said something along the lines of "haha, you're dead!"
I thought pffft. Ok, went to the elevator room, turns out the power is down. So, left the room, and a TAIL attacks me. I cannot see where this tail is coming from. It attacks me, then disappears.
Me: something just attacked me
Me : i cant see it
Haden : :D
Haden : haha
Haden : its gonna rape u!
Me: dude i cant fucking see it
Me :how do i kill it?!
Me : there must be a way
Haden says: haha
Haden says: kill it?
Haden says: dude
Haden says: SURVIVE IT!
Me : dude its dark i cant see shit!
Me: and the music
Me : ahhh!"
funny enough, I found the switch to turn on the elevator, and it said I had to wait for three minutes. Then, I saw IT! I thought, Haden, I am so dead.
I died about three times. I stupidly thought I could kill the fucker, but it wouldnt go down. I froze it with the nitrogen, and it still wouldnt go down.
On the Fourth attempt, I ran. I opened the shutter doors and ran to the lift. I get there, and the lift still hasn't come...now I know how Ripley felt in Aliens when the Queen is after her.
I stayed in the elevator room...and the 'thing' just broke the door down. It started walking towards me, so I dodged it and hit some more of the nitrogen. And STILL the lift hadn't arrived. For crying out loud, the President's Daughter is at stake here.
I made for one of the other rooms, and froze the thing again when it was coming to get me. Then, the lift arrived! I made a dash for freedom, with my heart pounding, because I knew that fucker was after me. Before I get in, I turn around to see if it's behind me, and breathe a sigh of relief. I get in.
Chapter 4 - 1 FINISHED, thank you very much, maam.
Jesus Christ, that was euphoric.

LMAO! Thats what I did...Thinking I was in a safe haven with my trsuty shotgun pointed at the door a luminados jumps down from the ceiling!!! I died about three times but it was great, haven't had a challenge like that in years. But to save ya ammo just use the knife for close quarters it also works well on multiple enemies; the first slash slashes their shield away then a few more swings and their dead, time it right tho cos those shifty buggers like to do a little dodge.
Btw, does anyone know what the illuminados say? Some of their lines crack me up, like the one where they point and shout "Matanor!!".

Next time if you wanna save time, just save up some cash for a rocket launcher and buy it from the Merchant down in the hole. When "Right Hand" appears after you flip the switch freeze him with Nitrogen, and smash him with a rocket...just remember you only have one shot with the rocket..... it is also possible to kill him with conventional weapons but it uses a lot of ammo...magnums are good too

Yeah the bastard can be killed with conventional weapons. I think you should have the striker buy this time so just abuse that with equally liberal use of the magnum. It gives a hefty amount of cash if I remember right.

You don't need to buy the rocket launcher, the game gives you one for free just before Luis is killed. ;) You just have to save it all the way up to "Right Hand".

With so many uncompleted games that are hard to get back into, I just wanted to start and finish a game I haven't (really) started yet, in the few free days I had last 2 weeks. With no new Zelda around, the next best thing was resident Evil 4, it just screamed Christmas to me :D. It was the Cube version by the way, but I'll just post my experiences here.
Not having experienced the other games, and this being my first play-through (apart from the first few hours I've played months ago), I probably didn't do things the most efficiently probably. You people may find it funny that I completely upgraded the minethrower ;). When I bought it I really thought it would come in handy.. I like explosive things.
Anyway, my memorable moments (most already posted, but they're great moments for a reason):
- Like many people posted before.. You're very decapition, an awesome experience :D. This happened actually in those first few hours I played the game months (maybe a year even) ago to see what I've just purchased, when I got decapitated for the first time, I knew this game was great ;). It was the very first Dr. Salvador you come across, in the village.. Not knowing what you needed to do to survive, I attempted various things, like climbing the tower, running around completely depleting the little ammo you have by then, and.. Running towards the exit marked on your map, where the chainsaw guy awaits you.. Hearing him start up his chainsaw for the very first time, I thought "Oh shit", then I thought "well, how bad can it be, I'll just pump him full of lead". Thing is, as you all know, Dr. Salvador can take a few hits, especially from your standard not upgraded handgun, so I shot him in the head, emptied my clip that way, then had to reload.. Then my head came off. Fantastic.
- Not being used to expecting action command, like the first time you're bound to the chair with Luis ;)
- First fight with El Gigante, wonder what happend to the dog afterwards
- Additional cutscene I missed on my first few houres trying out the game, I went back into the room with what's his name, Chief Mendez? Those are some sexy legs Ada.
- Chicken eggs?
- Your stand in the cabin with Luis.. Very cool. Also a great time to have fun with knocking down ladders. Those screams are hilarious.
- Right after that you can choose between the left route and right route, I chose the left. It's the first time I ended up being killed over & over I think.. Those Bella sisters are pretty scary (& deadly) in such a small arena.. I also tried the right route, and I found fighting the El Gigante to be easier and more rewarding.
- Most tense moment for me was maybe the room after the clocktower, with the 2 wolverines (forgot the names).. I probably just am not used to dealing with these bastards efficiently, but I thing those things scare me the most of all enemies in the game.
- Also a great moment many people already mentioned, that thing you encounter when you're waiting for the elevator..Crazy scary bastard. This playthrough, I was content with just escaping with my life, but on a next playthrough, I'll kill the thing.
- Plenty more.
Not all was good though:
- I also noticed the game got easier with every retry. More herb rewards, and less parasites. Really a shame, especially in hindsight I wonder how easy my game actually got. Next playthough, probably no retries, just reloads, how aggravating that may be. Also kind of defeats the purpose of choosing your difficulty..
- Would've liked more backstory
- Last boss, was less than epic. After so much tense moments and scary monsters, I would've expected an epic fight with some scary big mutated Sadler, who (which?) isn't destroyed with a few spare handgun bullets and your knife (and a rocket launcher which you get on the spot).
Anyway, that's quite some text. I conclude with saying the experience overall was fantastic, and I'll definitely play through it again some time, getting the things I missed first time around. I also hope a port of RE 5 will make its way to Wii someday, although I do plan to buy a PS3 somewhere in the future, so I probably get it either way. I might even try to pick up the older games.
Edit: nobody's probably gonna read so much text, so I shortened it a bit..

TMP is pretty cool; i always carried one with me.
And i'd say yes to the mine thrower and i played the game to death. It's not needed but it's certainly very useful.
The minethrower is not a necessary item. My friend bought it at his playthrough (actually, he bought all available items which resulted is very very low on cashflow!).
It's quite a fun little weapon to mess with it. You shoot at an enemy, they recoil and seconds later the mine explode. Quite funny to watch :D

Never even touched the mine thrower. But when you reach the castle make sure you buy the automatic rifle with scope...Comes in handy. Particularly at the beginning and in the gutter area. But the Blacktail upgraded in power and ammo capacity is always reliable.

forget the blacktail, red9 is the best and only handgun you need really. And i completed the game on the ps2 so i was gonna do the exact same thing i did then but the wii version is packed with quite a few more enemies so im left wondering if i should get a little more firepower for the island.
Atm seems that you guys say its not needed but fun to use. Is ammo really scarce for it? Maybe it would stop me getting magnum bullets if I do get it.

all i know is that it supposedly blows stuff up but after a delay. the delay is what makes me not want to take the risk of using it as these ganandos love to run alot more than they did in the ps2 version. I mean they have ran right up into my face countless times. especially them shield bastards. thankfully im past that now im on the island so no worries there.
If the mine thrower was anything like grenade launcher from resi 3, then I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Hmm, in that case it would work great in the castle with those religious fellas, like in that crank room and the room with the archers, but it just seems too strategic and risque to think about.
I genuinely don't advise buying the Mine Thrower as the delay in exploding can cause you a lot of problems if the enemies get too close. You're better off upgrading the TMP and Semi-Auto Shotgun, the Red 9 is the first thing you should max out though.
Plus mine thrower darts are quite rare, you're better off sticking with grenades.
Although if you get the exclusive upgrade with the mine thrower, the darts home in. Kinda cool, never used the mine thrower myself though.

i read some guides and the usefullnes (and fun) of the tmp is heavily underated just because its not powerful (which you kinda need in the latter stages of the game) but then again power is not what you buy it for. Maybe its really for the earlier stages of the game? Would have been useful in the water hall place though =/ Bah im buying it back regardless. Can't wait to own on my second plat through. Actually can't wait to properly play mercenaries mode again.

Aslong as you have the blacktail you're fine. it's by far the greatest handgun ever...so sexy too :heh:
Oh, and I never had probems with the delay using Mine Throwers. The good thing about it is that when you upgrade it, you are NOT upgrading the power of the mines, you're upgrading the distance they explode. This is VERY useful and i recommend getting it (though you don't really NEED it).
I used the blacktail in my very first run through this game (back in 2005, GC). After that, I've been using the Red9.

It's definitely the most powerful when fully upgraded, but the Handgun has a much better critical headshot rate, which is just so damn satisfying. The Matilda is pretty cool too, even though it's a complete ammo hog :heh:.
Handcannon, as far as handguns go, is clearly the best though.
Anyway, started playing this recently again, loaded up my professional account, the one where I sold everything and tried to go through the game with just a knife, masochist that I am. It's been almost a year I think, I'm in the room with the two el gigante, and after I melt teh first one, I just can't do the second bastard. In fact, I don't know how I managed to beat Salazars "right hand" with just a knife either....o_0. I reckon it's safe to start using flash grenades, cause they're not offensive :heh:.

Red9 is most powerful hangun even before you get exclusive and someone tested it against the handgun and it turned out that the Red9 woud actually give you more headshots using less ammo than the handgun. Makes sense given the power difference.
Source (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/file/535840/35441)
Quoted from source:
"The standard Handgun does give you a lot better chance of blowing off the heads
of enemies, but that doesn’t outweigh the Red9’s firepower. In fact, just to
make sure, I did a little test. I played through a portion of Chapter 2-2 three
times. I used a fully-upgraded handgun the first time, a fully-upgraded Red9
the second time, and a fully-upgraded Blacktail the third time. With the
Handgun, I killed 16 villagers with 44 bullets total. With the Red9, I killed
them with 32 bullets, and with the Blacktail, I killed them with 37 bullets.
So, with the Handgun, it took me 2.75 bullets to kill each villager, but with
the Red9, it only took me 2.00 bullets to kill each villager. The Blacktail had
similar results (2.31 bullets per villager). This test directly shows the
correlation between firepower and bullet conservation, and it shows why the
Red9 is the best handgun choice."
Handcannon is classed as a magnum. Never tried it though so I may be wrong. Will try to unlock it this time though..
and @'...' can you not read? 'Goron_3' said the blacktail is the sexiest gun ever and 'King V' agreed. I just posted what I thought was the sexiest. Doesn't matter that they are different classes of gun :blank:
And Riot Gun is a waste of money really. When your shotgun can hold 100 shells, you don't need to worry about reloading, and the rate of fire for the striker is a life saver as well :)

reviving thread
I bought this a week or so back and its quality. I didnt think id be one to relish this game but it sure is great. I am not a person for the horror genre in anything but books however Resi 4 seems to have altered my view.
Just at the part now where youve ridden on a big truck with ashley and you get a cutscene showing her get posessed and then a bit showing Ada talking with the scarred army guy.
Call me a pussy but I am playing on easy mode, simply for the fact that i dont want to have to gun down a Chainsaw wielding bitch-whore that has an overly big affection and stamina to shotgun shells.
Obviously youve shared these moments but these are my highlights:
saving the wolf and then helping you to kill el gigante
when you jump off a small bridge and then having to re-load as the chainsaw sisters come charging at you from 2m away! my first decapitation. lovely
the indianna jone mine shaft ride, for obvious reasons. "was tht a vrrrrrrrrrrm noise i heard leaping onto the cart?"
the first regenerator that you can see lying down on the hospital bed which you know will come to life. i resorted to bazooka the first time before realizing the wonders of the semi-auto rifle
awesomeness.
btw i have the mine launcher and its pretty good for when theres a few illuminados bunched up, it may as well be a grenade launcher because after the enemy writhes as you shoot it as it starts to gain balance it blows
the game has an awesome way of keeping you low on ammo on occasions. 1 moment your cruising and packed with shells the next you resorting to rifle at close range.
You shouldn't play it on Easy simply for the fact that Easy mode doesn't give you access to the whole game, man. Meaning there are parts of the game that you haven't seen. Like the Castle Labyrinth Garden, on Easy the door to the inside is open and you don't visit the Labyrinth. On Normal, the door is shut and you have to go into the Labyrinth to search for the two parts of a Moon medallion in order to open the door.
That and other areas are shut off, so you should definitely play it on Normal.

I had this game for several days, and ass raped it. The Salazar boss was so easy, I literally beat him in like 10-15 seconds on normal. After beating it, and doing the new content, I traded it in, and got Bioshock and Virtua Fighter 5. I already had the GC version anyway, so no loss really, especially seeing as the ported Ada content wasn't great anyway.

Because it's a Resident Evil game. I actually go from loving it to hating it. I think the main thing that spoils it for me is the ridiculous difficulty. The fact I can shoot a Zombie fie times in the face before it dies, yet if I hit it once in a stupidly small spot on it's hair line it dies straight away is VERY annoying.
The sweet spots should be bigger.

Because it's a Resident Evil game of course! I admit I took a chance on it - although thankfully, having got it for Christmas, I didn't pay for it! - knowing it would be different. But what I wasn't expecting was a huge step backwards in terms of enjoyment. UC is just boring to play!
There's plenty of mileage left in the RE4 formula - the best thing Capcom have done with the series since it began. So another game like that for the Wii would have been far better than what we got with Umbrella Chronicles.
It seems we'll need a 360 or a PS3 for that though and, sadly, we'll lose the Wii's excellent controls for such a game. Unless Capcom have plans to bring a version of RE5, or something like it, to the Wii... *crosses fingers*

For me UC was badly done, it just didnt know what kind of game it wanted to be. It was marketed as a lightgun game yet it lacked the fast pace of such a game.
A lightgun game should be like Virtua Cop, Time Crisis or even the recently released Ghost Squad. It should have short levels that have many an enemy popping up and you just shooting the hell out of them without haviing to worry about a sweet spot.
IMO Ghost Squad >>>> Resident Evil UC and that says alot as im a huge R Evil fan, played all the games multiple times and read all the books.

If UC was a light-gun game like that, then why bother even making it based on the Resident Evil series. The games are nothing like that. It's meant to be a survival horror series. If enemies popped up every few seconds, then you lose that feel and it just becomes another action game.
From what I played, I thought they managed to nail UC pretty spot on. It was faithful to the original games, whilst bringing something new. I'm relieved it didn't just turn into an all-out gun fight.

For me I dont see why they bothered with UC at all. They have tried multiple times to branch out the R Evil series, from R Evil Survivor to R Evil Outbreak and each time they have tried they have been poorly recieved. If they wanted to retell cetain parts of the game and tie up loose ends they should have just made UC using the same gameplay elements and graphical style as R Evil. I think thats what everyone expected when the game got first announced anyway.

I think they tried to tie up the loose ends in a way that would also make good use of the Wii's controls. The first idea that sprung to mind, I guess, would be a lightgun-esque game. Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition was pretty damn good control wise, but with the Wii edition of that and a light-gun game, there's a little more variety there.

But you're right about it never trying to be RE4, or in other words, Capcom weren't intending it to even approach the quality of said game, is one of the biggest problems with UC.

I don't get how people can think the cursor's slow; it's a nice speed. I haven't played any of the "new" levels, as I've yet to unlock them, but I think the enemies take a decent amount of hits, and it's still about survival too as you have to watch your ammo.

Anyways seeing as i eventually saw that mode off im now playing pro mode with the second special costume and what fun it is! Anyways Ashley in an armour suit ftw! She is impervious to harm! In fact, she is a new strategy device. Place her properly and the zealots will just let you take pot shots as they fail to pick her up because she is too heavy. Even the parasites that burst out can't hurt her. Ok, I must have set some kind of record, because I've had this game for ages and still not finished it!
I just haven't had the time. Basically, I moved the big telly downstairs into the living room of my house because I wanted others to enjoy it, and its better than the crappy one we have downstairs.
And, I only enjoyed playing this game on that particular television, because it just gives off the right atmosphere. :heh:
The telly is always being used, so that means...very little Wii time voor me.
I'm only on Act 5 - 1.

He was a complete bastard. I usually use the rocket launcher on him if i've saved it cos you find one the chapter before that.
I remember hating that boss when i was doing my 'Handgun only' run on Professional mode...ended up just waiting for the lift to come down and having to participate in what felt like hundreds of quick button mashes to dodge his attacks.

I always have a policy of using that rocket launcher at the part where you fight 2 Garradors in the same room. One well-placed rocket right into the wall behind where they're standing can usually take them both out.
I'm confined to a handful a magnum rounds, shotgun shells and an incedinary grenade on this boss. As I say, not enough NO2 cannisters for me :(

I always used a rocket launcher on all of the bosses/sub bosses both during and after my first run. Dude, we're like...brothers.
Not long before that section, I was:
In that big hallway, right before that huge statue walks and chases you before falling off the bridge.
I had no handgun bullets, about 1 shotgun shell, and hardly any rifle bullets. In the end, I was reduced to long range shooting, and stealth. Haha.

Red9 was awesome. Used to love it so much, would find it hard to not take out against bosses. Gosh, the only weapon to rival it is the striker. 100 shotguns shots 1 after other? Yes please :D The plagas removal weapon was very fun to play with too but damn did it make the game too easy :(

Ah, I want to play this again. Just finished RE 5 last night and I still prefer this to that. Never had it on the Wii so perhaps I should just get it on there instead of getting the GC version again and blasting through with the infinite rocket launcher and the chicago typewriter.
Think in the couple of run throughs I did on the game, about 4 or 5, only once did I use the infra-red scope on the regenerators. The other times I would just use either a magnum that I sort of upgraded or my chicago typewriter and just drilled it full of holes until it stopped regenerating. Very satisfying just letting the bullets fly into that thing. :D Have to say that they're probably one of the best inclusions into the series because they instilled a proper sense of fear into you knowing that you couldn't simply shot the legs and take it down that way as it was still capable of jumping up and taking your head. Should have brought those into RE 5 instead of the lickers.
I did a handgun run on this game just after christmas (i dont know why, i just love the game and really got into it again) and killing the regeneraters with a handgun is just insanity. popping off shots into them hoping for them to explode before you've run out of ammo. intense.
It was pretty much a knife run to be fair due to the sheer lack of ammo, although the game did seem to cotton on eventually and stopped with the useless ammo. :)
I could write about fond memories of this game for pages and pages, i've had that much fun with it.
Mercinaries is just brilliant,
nothing better then making a huge kill count with hunk, purely by snapping necks (i put it in spoiler tags because the first time i saw the neck break was just.....woah).
Also just going through the game with the extra weapons and decimating everything is quite fun.
Unlocking the handcannon felt like such an achievement.
straight away me and a mate loaded an old save file and sold everything in order to buy the handcannon. we ended up about 3000 short of infinate ammo, so i ended up killing the chainsaw guy in the village with a knife because we had no ammo. was brilliant :yay:.
The rest of the game was just one shot kill :D

Regenerators are little shits. There's nothing more horrifying than learning you don't have enough rifle rounds to take one out even with the infra-red scope.
Luckily, I think I'm past most of them now, but I know I'm right near fighting "it", and still hardly have any ammo.
The more I play this, the less I care about Resident Evil 5 not being on Wii. I'm sure it's a dumb, fun action game, but I don't get the vibe that this gives me.
I'd love to see a game in the spirit of Resi 4 on Wii, but more focus on gritty, close combat. Maybe you could have a handgun, but most fighting done with MotionPlus-enabled knife/hand-to-hand combat. It would also be dandy to duck and dodge at times. Anyway, this is one of those ideas that's been floating around in me noggin for ages, so I could probably write an essay on how it would work...
But yeah - Resi 4. Top notch.
I've not been that bothered about not getting 5. even one of my mates telling me bits about the story/game is not making me want to play 5, but more-so makes me want to go back to 4. Just shows how good this game is.

Well like I said, I've come off of the back of completing RE 5 and the first thing I thought was that I wanted to play this again because it really is the better game. Wii owners shouldn't be upset that they haven't gotten RE 5 on the Wii because it's not as good as RE 4.

RE5 might not be as good as RE4 in some respects, mainly the fact that Resi 4 laid down the foundations for Resi 5 but Imo it's like this as far as the stronger points go...
Size of game - Resi 4
Story - Resi 5
Gameplay - Resi 4&5
Boss Battles - Resi 4
Controls - Resi 4
Mercenaries - Resi 5
Those are the main points for me without getting too finite and getting into the weapons, different enemies etc, also graphics don't come into it as the games are a generation apart.
So basically Resi 4 is better in some respects but some of the advancements that RE5 offers are most welcome, the best additions for me personally are the inventory system (even though I did like organising the attache case in RE4) and Co-op Mercenaries mode, both are truly great games though and the whole thing about them straying from the original concept really doesn't matter that much Imo, the series has just evolved.
Mind you it would be nice in the next one if they had a few more puzzles but defintiely not as many as in the originals, maybe keep the over-the shoulder view but have certain sections that are more restrictive to keep both kinds of Resi fans happy and obviously make the main adventure solo again, because as good as the co-op is in Resi 5 I'm not sure if they will do it again for the next title, they could add it in as an extra mode though, or just keep it to Mercenaries because that mode in co-op truly is epic. ^^
So yeah, in summary they are both quality titles that have a lot of decent points to be said for each. : peace:
it would be nice in the next one if they had a few more puzzles but defintiely not as many as in the originals
I think an eventual RE6 should have more puzzles than RE4 did. Keep the same gameplay, but add more action breaks with some puzzles.
A good example to look at would be Half Life 2. I just completed that this month in the Orange Box (along with its Episodes) and thought the balance between action FPS and puzzle solver was great. RE6 should be something like that, they would keep the fast action introduced in RE4 but there should be breaks in between with puzzles to solve in order to advance.
Making a shorter game with no puzzles is definitely not the way to go... :(
obviously make the main adventure solo again
Definitely in agreement.

Quick question, is Resi 4 hard to get into without playing the first 3 for the story?
Not at all, just pick up and play, really. :) In fact, the game pretty much ignores RE's legacy, just mentioning something here and there. Besides, I think as the game begins, you get a bit of backstory, something like some title cards about past games' main events (Spencer Mansion incident and Raccoon City incident). Don't worry about that, you won't have a problem getting into it. :)

That only really works before he mutates. Anyway, I can do it so I can reach the mutated stage with plenty of ammo now, but not exactly brimming with health items. That time limit is also way, way too strict. I don't see myself getting past this any time soon.
It works on the mutated form too, the knife is incredibly fast at killing Krauser.

Dude, your sig...is so beautiful! I almost pissed myself in delight. Then, I remembered that you were a Liverpool fan, so I came to my senses. :heh:
I've played Resident Evil 4 briefly on the Gamecube, so I've used the controller, but not for a huge period of time. I think I prefered the Wiimote/Nunchuk control scheme at first glance, and the more and more I play this on the Wii, the more and more I think it's really suited for these controls. I can't really imagine trying to get a headshot with the 'Cube controller. It would...just seem to fiddly, imo. Less fluid.
Christ, try getting a headshot on REmake with the old camera scheme and controls...it's not easy. Nowhere near as fun, either.

I inverted the analog stick and I'm finding the controls so much better now. I managed to get to the canyon level. (Just after the first time you meet the merchant).
Is there a way to rotate items in the inventory?
Do you mean with regards to placing them sideways, or horizontal instead of vertical?
I think the B Button does that. Just select the item which you want to rotate, and then try that. Either that, or just...fiddle with the buttons until you find the right one. I do it, but I do a lot of things instinctively without ever knowing which buttons do what exactly. With some footie games, I'll shoot, but if you ask me what the shoot button is, I'd have to take a moment to think.

Don't joke, man. Some games just seem...easier to play that way. I swear I played Lylat Wars or Starwing with inverted controls.
I inverted the analogue stick aswell. I just cant work analogue sticks normally ::shrug: i always end up looking at my feet or something stupid??
To rotate items with GC controls, you press X (i think) to pick up an item and then R to rotate. At least thats how i think i did it.

A third person flight game....good example. Generally speaking 3rd person games are inverted(speaking of ones with full camera control ala GTA), and flight controls always are (As is real life).

Dude, your sig...is so beautiful! I almost pissed myself in delight. Then, I remembered that you were a Liverpool fan, so I came to my senses. :heh:
Don't make me say it again.. I'm a cleaner :heh:
Killer7 is actually a game I wouldn't mind seeing given the 'Wii Edition' treatment.. not for my benefit, but for those who never got to experience it first time round  ..it doesn't require many buttons so it would certainly be possible
I'm getting a bit confused with all this talk of inverted controls.. it depends on the default setting :heh: ..for me, the game will affect what way I go!
For example.. Lylat Wars or any game where you have to aim with the left analogue stick.. up has to be down and down is up :heh: ..and likewise, on the N64 in Goldeneye for example, C-Up was Look Down and C-Down was Look Up.
On the Gamecube though, if all aiming was taken care of on the C-Stick it had to be normal.. Up for Up, Down for Down..
But who cares.. Resident Evil: Wii Edition.. point and shoot :heh:

Mark up five Kudos points for this man.
Knowing Capcom's behaviour of recent times, it'll end up as a HD Remix for 360 and PS3.

o_O The Wii edition?
I've played a bit more today, after recharging my battery pack. Oh my God, the battle against "It" was really tough. When I was in "the maze" (as I call it) trying to get through with It right behind me (and over me), I felt my heart pounding. Christ.
Was so relieved to finish that.
Although, I'm finding Krauser now...and he's a fucker. Not just any fucker - but a fucking fucker. Hate him.

I'm quite amazed some people are playing RE4 for the first time just now!
I'm tempted to give the Wii version another bash. I completed the GC version on both normal and professional but I've only finished Wii once, might go back and do pro. Kinda wish they'd added a new difficulty mode on Wii to go with the improved aiming.

story time kids!
at school, me and my mates knew a canidian guy, we sorta hung out with him, but we werent exactly close, rarly getting together outside school.
we were 15-16 at the time, he lent one of our mates a game, and when he asked for it back the guys said hed drop it through his letter box that night. the guy asked him not to, saying his parents would see the 12 logo on it. we were all a bit shocked, our parents all let us play what ever kept us out of their way, but mostly because he was old enough to play by like, 3 years.
so no matter how unfair you think your parents are about age ratings, thank god you arnt that guy.

Overall, I think I have mixed feelings about the game. I did not enjoy the Krauser fight one bit, but I didn't use the knife, I just stuck to weaponary. In the end, I got frustrated to hell and was sick of it, so Rocket Launchered him to high heaven.
I also found the final Lord Saddler battle a bit...disappointing for the final segment of the game. The jet-ski escape was fun, as much pretty much everything until about Chapter 5-4-ish.
There are far, far too many enemies in this game for my liking. How many zombies were there in total for the first Resident Evil? Nowhere near as many in comparison to the enemies in this. The action sequences where you have about 20-30 enemies or so coming at you, they get tiresome as you progress. I fear for the franchise because there is far too much "action." This is part of the reason why the new Silent Hill is very, very appealing to me - the lack of combat.
Ironically, the best part about this game, especially the Wii edition, is the way you control and fight. I cannot imagine how anyone played this game without the Wiimote. Infact, my enjoyment would decrease if the Wiimote were taken away.
Overall, it's a good game. But, there are a few things that annoy me about it.

I never said there were too many zombies, because I worded it well. The enemies in this are not zombies, just like the "things" in 28 Days Later are not zombies. They are infected. Zombies are the dead re-animated. :)
I have a deep love for REmake, and that had the balance between action and exploration perfect. You could go for ages without even seeing so much as a living (or unliving, ha!) soul - which is excellent. You don't know what waits for you in the next room. What's also great is that you can revisit areas you've already been in, and sometimes you'll see an enemy that wasn't there before. My first encounter with a crimson head was terrifying.
There are many amazing parts of this game, I never doubted that. But, there are also parts which I just find tedious. Just like there are some parts in REmake which I find tedious.

actualy, the best part o the game for me was a total spamming of the vilagers in the cabin fight. the new view style and controles would have made it a piece of piss to finnish the origional games, as far as im concerned, being swarmed is more what the whole zombie vibe is about.
also, the kruaser fight was awsome,

The cabin scene is excellent. However, there is a huge, huge difference between that, and merely walking into a room, fighting off many villagers before getting to the next room.
The cabin scene was a nice little take on the first Night of the Living Dead film, for me. Probably one of the best parts of the game. It was a nice little set piece.
I just don't think that adding 10 or so more enemies necessarily equates to a better battle. Fighting Regenerators for the first time, or even the 10th time can be terrifying.

The Cabin scene was defiantly the best part of the game for me so far. I guess though, what the game is really impressing me with is just how well they've captured the fall atmosphere, especially in the initial path up to the village. And then there's the little things like the way you can hear the Gandos talking before you see them, in a language you cannot understand, and then they suddenly hear or see you and that music starts up and then when you finally spot them they're much closer than you at first thought they were... And then there's the merchant, who's probably THE best character in any game EVER. Although, it was a little predictable when enemies were going to show up and attack you, there were some points that it actually did scare you a bit. Anytime the chainsaw enemies appeared they were quite unexpected. Especially that one time in the mines where you can snipe that one in that higher up area, and then when you go down the stairs there's another standing right there. I didn't really like having to protect Ashley either, never really been much of a fan of having some one who can't defend them-self follow you around in a game, I mean, if I were Leon, I would have at least given her a handgun

i agree that more enemys dosent always amke things more tense, but remeber how comparitivly weak the villagers are. could a single villager pose a threat? could 2 or 3 or even 5 realisticly threaten you? thats why a large number worked so well.
regenerators posed a threat alone, but fighting them is totaly diffrent to any outher enemy. you have to be slow, and precise, while its slowly gets closer and closer the inevitability and seeming invulnerablity is what made it so tense.
also, they seemily try to recapture that in resi 5 with the reaper. its not quiet as effective, but any one hit killer is worthy of fear in my books.

They can, if they're positioned and timed correctly. The zombies are much slower in the first Resident Evil game, are weaponless and you can hear them before they approach (usually), but they were still threatening.
Having set pieces or instances when you're surrounded is fine. I'm not against that at all. But, it did feel ever so slightly repetitive by the time you reach the end of the game.
The amount of villagers that were evident in this game makes you wonder if it should even be classed as a village. Make a small city would suffice.

But, that single threat was still 10 times more "threatening" than being "overwhelmed" by the villagers/others in this game. Having 10 or more doesn't really make it more threatening, it just means you have more to aim at or more you had to do in order to get past this stage. Excluding that cabin stage, where the feeling of claustrophobia was immense. There should have been more of that.
If you think this game had too many enemies you would hate Resident Evil 5!
Is it basically just a swarm, then?
Ahh, this is why I'm slightly fearful for the series. I hope for the next game that Capcom just take the series back to its roots, and try to recreate that horror from the first few games. I do like what they've achieved with 4, but there are moments when you think "Hmm, this is Resident Evil, right?" :heh:

seriously though you said:

OK you didn't say there were too many ZOMBIES in this but the point is pretty much still you said there were too many enemies and as many times as I have heard the joke"needs more zombies" I never thought i'd hear the opposite.....:)

I love remake equally as much as 4.. As remakes go that and zero mission are my favourites of all time, It's why I hope they don't think because people love resident evil 4's style so much and 5 that they will not kill the old gameplay.. but well they are... I wait to see if silent hill can interest me again too.
The reason most people didn't like the old style is because it was too hard for them.. Probably the same people you didn't like metroid prime echoes or f-zero gx but still.
let me just say that you played this game recently yes?
It's just that at the time there was almost no better looking game than this Anywhere and well... it WAS the gamecube and there was nothing to play for the system at this time...
I know playing it recently might mean the shock-factor has worn off and it comes off as a very good game rather than a shockingly-good experience.
