I've done it about 10 times and 9/10 times its worked...

It's a play on the number 9. All multiples of 9 add up to nine, and adding two digits and subtracting from the original take you to a multiple of nine.

12: 12- (1+2) = 9
74: 74 - (11+4) = 63

All the multiples of nine have the same icon.

Did it without thinking of a number and it gave me one of the symbols under multiples of 9...I thought it was freaky at first.

Haha just realised now. If you do it several times the symbols for the multiples of nine change, so it seems your getting a new answer everytime. Thanks!

You fail at adding up then, it always, without exception, results in a multiple of 9.

10: 1+0=1. 10-1=9.
16: 1+6=7. 16-7=9.
50: 5+0=5. 50-5=45.
71: 7+1=8. 71-8=63.
