This is from the official press release:
When visiting other pay-service Wi-Fi hotspots, such as those at coffee shops or airports, players can use a laptop computer and the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector to access Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector provides a conduit to play games via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection by enabling the Nintendo DS to share an Internet connection established by a laptop running Windows XP (regular Internet access fees may apply at pay-service hotspots).

McDonnalds will be free and nothing other that a DS with a Wifi Game is needed.

Apparantly Nintendo made a deal with Mcdonalds so that a WIFI DS user gets to use its service for free whereas Laptop users would have to pay the fee. Mind you this is only refering to Mcdonalds USA.

Nope, it will be free.

One of our readers, Tristam Reeves, afraid of not being able to use his Nintendo DS for free at his nearest hotspot, contacted Nintendo with the issue described above. His findings: We can all relax, as the DS WiFi Connection will not be charged like the other (WiFi) services (by McDonalds) will be. It will be free.

Good thing it's free, and still, it's pretty cheap :P

Even if you had to pay in McDonalds the service would still be free. You have to pay for XBox Live and the Playstation online service, you don't with Nintendo.

You get what you pay for.

In the case of Xbox Live 30 quid (less if you shop/ped around) for a year and a headset has been my most worthwhile video game related investment ever.

That doesn't make sence.....Surely they'd have a wireless router for the net to work anyway!!

Alot of wifi settups are so that only pc's can access them. this is done with somthing called hanshaking or somthing like it. This may be why a laptop is needed.

When nintendo meant for free didnt they mean THEY wont be charging for the service such as Microsoft and Sony do for there online service, shirley its up to business' who install these hotspots to decide if its for free or not.

From the way they explained it it seemed it was just you take in the DS and get online, but if you need a Laptop.... that sort of defies the point.

Hopefully it's just a mix up. :D

You're misunderstanding that comment; mainly thanks to the fact that you added the (not mcdonalds) bit in yourself; when the original press release says no such thing.

Nintendo says that if you go to one of their 7,500 access points, you will be able to play online for free, with only the DS in hand. However, if you try and use it at another access point, which was not installed by Nintendo, you will need your laptop, so it can divert your ds' connection to Nintendo's network.

You will not need to pay at McDonalds. That cost will be for using laptops and such in the store. The DS is still free to use; my sis is a manager in the biggest branch in brum; she has confirmed they are getting it in shortly, and will be free. However, they will still want people to buy something if they intend on staying in for prolonged times, as you will be taking up space.

Playstation online is neither free or not, as sony does nothing, there is no service at all it's just down to campansy to make games on-line and use there own servers ect. this means some companys may charge others may not, in a simular way to the way the ds will work on-line, but the ds will allow for friends lists ect. intrestly ps3 will be the only online next gen console with-out a on-line sevrice (eg. xbox live).

I was hoping that we misunderstood the quote :D. Does your sis have any other details about it?

Not as yet; she says the whole installation is being handled by someone outside McDonalds(probably Nintendo or BT...not sure), and all she knows is that she is expecting her store to be dealt with by end of the month at the latest.

What i ment with "not McDonnalds" is that they are free. No additional charge.
But in other plases like airports you will need a Laptop.
