View Full Version : Shows not many people watch

A few years ago I was watching Cartoon Network pretty late and this show called "Home Movies" started, the art style (or lack thereof) gave me low expectations but the show is very much dialogue driven and surprisingly entertaining.
So recently I delved back into it and I'm enjoying it a lot, here's a clip from season 2 (yes, this is indeed animated in flash).
http://youtube.com/watch?v=qYWOjvJuquo&feature=related
BTW don't draw too many conclusions from this clip, the jokes are pretty varied.
and a bio stolen from wikipedia:
It is about eight-year-old Brendon Small (voiced by the creator, head writer, and lead musician of Home Movies, Brendon Small), who makes home films with his friends, Melissa Robbins and Jason Penopolis, in his spare time. He lives with his divorced mother, Paula, and his adopted baby sister, Josie. He is also friends with his alcoholic, short-tempered soccer coach, John McGuirk.
So what shows do you like that no one watches?
I guess Firefly and Enterprise, as both were canned due to lack of people watching.
Everyone buy Firefly on DVD!

It seems not many people watch Arrested Development, despite it being absolutely brilliant. Maybe that's why there were only 3 series. :blank:
I think it's probably just me and about two other people who have watched .hack//Sign, which is as brilliant as A.D.

Are you aware that home movies is from the same creator of Metalpocalypse? :D

I've not seen a lot of people talk about Pushing Daisies and Journeyman, both new shows and both brilliant, shame this bloody writers strike is fucking up with the scripts, can't believe they've had such a short season (and Journeyman in fear of being canceled altogether) because of some bloody strike.
If no one has seen them I whole heartedly recommend them both, just grab the first 2 episodes of them and see what you think =D

Please do, it is awesome. You stole my suggestion OW!
Anyway, Veritas is a pretty cool show and not very well known. I was younger when I saw it, so I might be wrong, but I really liked it

Enterprise was very good, I thought.
It didn't have any of the cheese of the previous series, partially because it cut a certain two-word name I shall not mention here in it... :indeed:

I just can't think of any show that I watch that nobody else does, besides Kid's TV. Deadwood is one option buty I know Dan Dare watches it. Another is Mystery Science Theater 3000 which is (was) FUCKING AMAZING.

The individual episodes weren't expensive - only the initial set was. Not many people saw it some episodes were not aired and the rest were shown out of order. It was only successful on DVD.

Far too well known. I mean, there's a lot of people who love the show and all. I remember you posting the theme tune a couple of years ago. I think it achieved cult status the moment it was broadcasted.

Random ones;

Jericho was a weird one, regularly drew in 9 million + even against American Idol, yet it wasn't renewed.....until the fans wen't crazy and got their nuts out. Alias and Everwood were two shows i liked that were canned due to low viewers, Enterprise also.

Most things are canned because of lack of viewers, which tends to be what happens when the quality also lacks.
Anywho...
Anyone watched Samanta Who yet? Looks like it could be a decent average sitcom. Plus Christina Applegate is always fun.

Quality has absolutely nothing to do with it, how many great shows have been cancelled. Sadly humans are pathetic creatures who would rather watch mindless dross like American Idol and Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader over shows like Jericho and Friday Night Lights.

When the fans start tuning out is never a good sign. It happens. It happened with Veronica Mars. Shows can get far too built up on their own image and turn into an almost parodic melodrama.

It achieved a little cult status, but not many people watched it, hence why it got assraped from our screens. Cue a large amount of pimpsmacking from the cult massive to finally get it on Doovdé.

Yeah you're right, it got really low ratings; I don't think many people 'got' it. It was aired when I had just started college, and I was the only person I knew who was watching it from the start.

I know, it's a pissing disgrace, the masses were deprived of such quality lines like:
Garth Marenghi: I do not believe that any form of life, be it human, animal, or plant, should be hurt in the making of a television programme. So I personally feel really bad about that cat we killed.
Dean Learner: I had a cat once. I dropped a sofa on it, it was a right off, so I stood on its head.

The series centers around Dan Vasser, a normal man living in San Francisco who, for an unknown reason, begins jumping backwards in time. He soon learns that each series of jumps follows the life of a person whose destiny he seems meant to change. Dan's jumping affects his family life with his wife and son, his job as a reporter, and instills suspicion in his brother, a police detective.
Ie a serious Quantum Leap. :)
Pushing daisies is great, started watching it today, and have totally fallen for it. It's so different, yet has this sort of Amélie feel to it. Favourite new show :) Should hold me off untill next season of heroes, that is if i ration the episodes that I have.

Haha, so I went to the wikipedia to learn about Pushing Daisies and i read the first paragraph of the plot and my first thought is "this sounds a bit like dead like me" and then bam I scroll up and see this: "American television dramedy created by Bryan Fuller (creator of Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls)"
Dead like me is an awesome show that got two seasons before it was canned but because of a fairly large fanbase it's getting a movie and if that's popular then there'll probably be a third season. I first got into it when Sky were showing it on Sky one, it's about a girl who dies and then has to be a grim reaper - take peoples souls before they die.
Georgia Lass is aloof and emotionally distant from her family and shied away from her life. After dropping out of college, she takes a job at Happy Time Temporary Services. On her lunch break of her first day, she is hit and killed by a toilet seat from the de-orbiting of the Mir space station. She is informed shortly after her death that, rather than moving on to the "great beyond", she will become a grim reaper in the "external influence" division, responsible for reaping souls of people who die in accidents (many of which are of Rube Goldberg-style complexity), suicides and homicides.
I'm not sure why Dead Like Me was so fun to watch but I think it boils down to the characters and some decent writing. I definitely recommend it.
EDIT: So I watched the first episode of Pushing Daisies and the Ned (who looks just like John Cusack) is going to have the worst case of blue balls ever, I feel sorry for him.
Ashley

his sexual past and drive is explained later on, and touched on in the first episode (theres gotta be a reason Olive said "I used to think masturbation meant chewing your food....I don't anymore").
I never did watch DLM, always wanted to but yeah, it looks fun.
Wonderfalls is fantastic. Lee Pace (Ned on PD) is in it too, but Wonderfalls is really great fun.

I love all those shows like British Transport Police and Traffic Cops - they're really genteel and civil shows about genteel and civil cops busting common, low key crime with the power of firm but fair reasoning. Makes a change from their explosively sensationalist American counter parts like S.W.A.T. ("When people are in trouble, they call the cops, and when the cops are in trouble, they call S.W.A.T!!") and in all honesty I feel like I live in a safer country as a result.

Oh yeah MST3K is absolutely brilliant, such a shame Sci-Fi stopped airing episodes years ago. Probably the funniest show ive ever seen.
Anyone seen the new show called Chuck? It started airing this season in the US and has been really good so far. Its a spy type show where the main character is just a normal guy. Bit like Jake 2.0 if anyone ever saw that but a hell of a lot better.

No, but for some reason it made me think of Unexplained Mysteries or something like that. Cheesy American programme from the 80s or early 90s of crimes, dissapearances etc that haven't been solved. Like Crimewatcher, but unintentionally camper.

That reminds me of a show that tried to be a little paranormal; having reconstructions of 'kidnappings' - like a guy on a motorbike went missing between one state and another and even though there were no witnesses or anything, the show somehow explained that he must've (on his motorbike..) picked up TEH WICKED HITCHER OF TEH WEST who must have proceeded to gut him and eat him alive and hide his never-again-found body again.
Lies. But groovy, so acceptable.

Foreword:
I LOVED Sliders back in the day :)
And Life On Mars was the best thing to come from the beeb in years.
Eerie Indiana was pretty special back in the day too.
My current favourite programme ( has been for a few years now) is.... Still Game. Best comedy I've seen in years. The wonderfully developed characters and portrayal of old age against modern influence/ideals is an astounding comedy tool in the right hands.
I'd recommend anyone check out some youtube clips. If you can understand Glasweigan :)
I'm proud to say this is my favourite programme ever :D
