Here's my first attempt at product photography.

Comments and suggestions on how to improve it are welcome (no, you don't need "1337" photography skills to say what looks good and not in the pic). :)

Nice shoot except i can barely read the product name, but that could be due to my monitor's lack of brightness.

Still makes me want to hug a toaster (http://www.theaxeeffect.com/axefilms.html) though :D

I think you need to make more light shine at the label. Otherwise a good picture.

I think this comes down to monitor calibration. I haven't done a proper print to see if it's alright or not :)

I would indeed suggest another small light source on the right or a white surface that reflects the light coming from the left. n_n

My monitor is set to maximum brightness and I cant see the label too well either, but then originally the picture would be larger I suppose.

Was this just for fun or are you a serious photographer? Also, do you have more work somewere on the net?

I'm just a happy amateur :)

I had an extra light source and a reflector, but sadly they're not as good as a proper flash on the other side...I built a softbox today to eliminate the spread of light (have been a big problem). I've not nailed the lighting yet, since I have no metering as of yet (doing it all by eye and experimentation).

I've got a zoto.com account which I've been adding some old photos, and adding new along the way (seems to be down for updates atm).

cool n_n. I'll have to check it out when it works again then 0_0

EDIT: HAHA damn, the picture looks perfect now that I'm not blinded by the sunlight n_n.

The label seems bright enough of this side of the fence. What I like about the photo is the fact that the bottle looks tall and proud. Maybe it would stand out more if the background was another colour? I dunno? Nice work as usual Mr. Particle.

Personally Peem I think the light on the Axe bottle is spot on. I can see it pretty well and my monitor is reknown for poor contrast, low brightness and over saturation. Its important to know on shots like this its important not to make the label overly bright or else the person takes a quick glance and thats it.

If its slightly darker the person physcologically(sp?) studies it longer and harder, and thusly takes alot more of it in and it sticks alot better.

If you cant see that logo, you must be fucking blind.

I can see it ok, could be brighter though imo.

Depends on the message you want out with it. Naturally I could make the label stand out like a street prostitute in a bible class, but naturally this doesn't always mean it's the best way round :)

well, after that rant from me...here's something other than product shots (spammy sod I am).

Axe
I think the label could do with another light, nothing too sharp, possibly from a reflector, just to light up the label a little more (its readable, but for a product shot it could be better)

DS
The button surfaces are too shadowy i think, could do with another light source, and i personally think you should edit out the reflection of the hinges in the lower screen. Might look a bit wrong though, but you could give it a shot and see.

Water Drop
I love you.

What I'd really want is a proper light setup for product photography :)

At the moment, all I have one flash, and one basic reflector. For proper product photography, I'd love having a table/light tent for it, but a guy got to start somewhere. :)

Thanks for the comments.

sorry about double post, but I thought it's smarter not to do another thread... :)

Indeed I have, good observation. Reason for using multiple light sources is to increase light passing through the water. :)

Here are two more...and that's it from me for a while.

NDS picture:
Myabe you should add some light so you could see the buttons and the touch screen a bit better. Otherwise it's awesome :awesome:

Did I mention that those water pics are lovely

Yeah...The water ones are good. The others need different lighting if you want them to look more proffessional. But otherwise they're great.

Your water drop pictures are amazing!!

Your Insect pictures!!! INCREDIBLE!!!!!! seriously well done!!!

Have you taken a photography course at all? It's amazing if you've learnt to do all that by yourself!!
The 'Linulta Dimage A200' must be a seriosly good camera for the very reasonable price because the clarity and detail you are managing to get on some of your extreme close-ups (such as the close-up of the Bee with pollen in its fur) is fantastic!!

heh, after years of my dad noticing things wrong in just about everything. I've got the tricks of the trade. There are 2 moons on the castle wall scene in Zeferilli's version of Hamlet! One moment you seen the moon over the sea and his shadow going one way, but the shadow from his sword is going the other way :heh:

I had photography courses from 1996 to 1999, but that has been more or less useless for me (never got to learn much, mainly theory). I've been photographing since october 2004, but only as a hobby and to get others happy of seeing my work. Naturally my dream is to start working with photography, but that's still some years into my future.

Some of the macro shots are with additional hardware attached to the camera. I have two close-up lenses, and even a SLR lens that I put on reverse to get some proper close stuff (not used this much on insects though).

The reason I've gotten decent photos, is my diamond hard determination not to be satisfied with a shot until it's perfect (at least in my eyes).

Yeah...The water ones are good. The others need different lighting if you want them to look more proffessional. But otherwise they're great.

That's due to me being rather limited to one decent light source, which I'm now trying to fix by building better softboxes, and getting an additional flash (I might even build a purpose made light tent for product photography).
