People you may be noticing that the once great word of LOL has lost all its former glory. Once the holy grail of laughing desciption, it is now being whored out at the end of every sentence. With your help we can put a stop to this and restore LOL to its former glory.

To back the campaign you must do the following:

Place "PROUD MEMBER OF THE ANTI-LOL CAMPAIGN" in your sig

and follow these commandments:

1. Thou shalt not place 'lol' in a sentence not containing a 'joke'.

2. Thou shalt not place 'lol' in a sentence containing a 'joke', as this ruins all ' comedy value' of the 'joke'.

3. Thou shalt not use the word 'lol' when confused. It only heightens your impression of stupidity and adds no conversational value.

We honest, hardworking forum readers and posters are sick and tired of being confronted with lazy posters 'conveniently' forgetting to add a 'y' and a 'o' to 'you'

With your help people we can restore the glory to LOL!

Please do not take this seriously

haha looks quite patronising sometimes though, and hehe has evil, conniving connotations, and rofl is just a step too far into l33t speak, hence lol is the only viable option.

I 100% agree with JonSt. "LOL" is one of the most annoying txtspk words there is. You get people who mindlessly say it and aren't even laughing. Then you get people who just go "K, LOL, K, LOL" In every conversation you have with them because they really don't give a shit.

I only used it in a message a couple of minutes ago, DAMN!

Though to back myself up, i was REALLY REALLY laughing at the awful Ant and Dec Lookalike from the other thread in General Chat!

I use "lol" to indicate a minor amusement, in "the real world" its a small passage of air through the nose. Not a laugh but a sign of amusement. Its lost its original meaning and gained a new one, like the word "gay".

I pronounce lol by saying each letter individually, and I know of other people who say it this way, but then for the lollerskates to make sense you really have to pronounce it like a proper word. How do you guys say it?

I always think of it (I don't say it out loud, only say it inside my head) as being a word. Probably has to do with the fact that it's a word in Dutch (and me speaking Dutch and all that).

I just really really don't like "lol"... it's always sort of annoyed me, especially when it's being over-used or just being used when it's like, not needed.
I'll just stick to stuff like "heh", "hahaha", "hehehe" or just some smileys. They work fine.

I was watching my friend play WoW the other day — yes, I'm that cool — and he kept on using 'lol' when his actual facial expression didn't change an iota. But that's nothing to the time he actually said it when someone told a joke. He was ashamed, and rightly so.

I don't use 'lol' as it's just so cheap. To me it reads like, "I don't want to write a proper response, so I'll just whack ol' faithful in at the end here." I know not everyone uses it in such a way, but still... I don't like it.

I was on the way to work this morning, LOL. And I nearly ran over this cyclist. It was funny though because he swore at me for splashing him. ROFLMAO! I was LOLLERSKATING the rest of the way.

Now that is the worst sentence I have ever typed....this week (grammer aside).

What does my head in about ROFLMAO and LOL and all that other malarky is its used because people cannot be bothered to initiate a proper response. Some people are worse then others.

... People who talk like the above are just people who have no idea how to structure a sentance using real words in order to put a coherant point across. I have no problem with people who say lol to things which are supposed to be funny, really, as it's almost polite. Lol, to me, is basically internet smiling. Rofl's are reserved for real laughing, but generally I like to use a combination of CAPITAL LETTARS, poorly spelt words on purpose and exclamation marks to show my reaction! And stuff.

I think I'm developing an unhealthy habit of... typing too much.

I have to agree - I forgot to mention real life lolling. In my social circle I find it totally acceptable to have someone say "LOL!1!", so long as it's said so you can hear the 1's (i.e. total piss take) then it's brilliant.
