Arsenal Ladies won 5 -0 against Leeds!!! Bloody hell.

Man, are they good.

Watched the whole match and it was more the fact that Leeds were woeful. Woman's football's got a long way to go, the goalkeepers especially are really, really poor. Mostly it was like watching sunday league.

I watched the 2nd half and I feel you're being cruel to Sunday league there. Honestly I freely admit to being rubbish at football but im confidant im better then all of the Leeds team and most of the Arsenal team.

Yup, your cup record totally contrasts your league effort at the moment, you can beat Europe's finest but lose/draw to mediocre english clubs...whats up with that.

Well, i'll be wearing my Barca scarf for a while, damn, they better win.

You better think about beating West Ham first. Even though it is unlikely that will happen, there is still a chance of us getting 4th. As long as you drop points to West Ham and we win our matches against Man City and Wigan, then 4th is ours baby. But as I said, its not highly likely....

That really was a great game, really fast paced with tons of chances at each end. Reyes pleasantly suprised me at the end, that second goal was a quality finish, hopefully that'll give him the confidence boost he needs.

Yeah Steve McClaren got the England job, from after this WC2006.

I've got mixed feelings about this one. I can sort of agree with people who say it's better to have an Englishman this time around, but Steve McClaren for me is too volatile at this level. No offence to the lad, he's a good man and good manager in his own right, but he still needs some proving to do for me.

Din

Don't really want McClaren to have the England job. And what's all this bullshit from the FA about him always being first choice? Ha what joke.

------------Rooney -------------------------

not including rooney because hes never going to make it :P

----------Robinson----------
Neville----King----Terry----A.Cole
Beckham--Carrick---Gerrard---Downing
--------------Lampard---------------
---------------Owen-----------------

subs:

Green
Carragher
Lennon
Bent
Defoe
Crouch
J.Cole

Yeah ive gone something a bit different, given that Lampard cant defend for shit and getting Gerrrard to defend for both of them means he then rarely gets to make attacking runs. Ive pushed Lampard up to play just behind Owen and bought Carrick in for the injured Rooney, This means that carrick can sit back and allow the rest of the midfield to get forward. I went for King over Carragher purely because Carragher and Terry are very similar players. And Downing over Joe Cole because its nice to have an actual left midfielder on the left for a change. Thats how I would line up against the better teams anyway. against teams like Trinidad or whatever I would drop Carrick for Defoe.

Any ideas on right full back, anyone? Neville is useless, Young isn't good enough either (and injured, isn't he?), and Carra is wasted in that position. This is England's one areas of weakness IMO...if only Stevie Finnan was English!

Neville is a wiked crosser of the ball! I'd say Michael Dawson should play seen as he has played exceptional for us, and Ledley King. But i am a Tottenham fan so inevitably biased.

Sometimes I wonder about some peoples footballing knowledge. Neville clearly isn't useless, he is a fantastic right back. And he tends to play amazing for England. He is a good with crosses and attacking throw-ins. Not to mention his great link up play with Beckham.

My England XI would be.

Robinson
Neville
Cole
Terry
Campbell/Ferdinand (dependant on form)
J. Cole
Gerrard
Lampard
Beckham
Owen
Rooney

Subs -
Green
Crouch
Carragher
Wright-Phillips
Parker/Nolan/King (verstaile midfielder basically)

As Rooney is out of the world cup, in my opinion its simply bring in the next best guy. Crouch and Owen worked amazingly well against Argentina, so I don't doubt the partnership.

Sure way to win is to perfect a set play with Beckham taking the freekick and Crouch heading it in. So it goes like, fall over near the box -> beckham freekick -> Crouch scoring. Repeat, till we win the World cup. That sort of tactics is much more systematic and consistent than relying on Rooney.

Despite having a huge dislike for London clubs (How many of the bastards are there?) I feel that I've disliked Arsenal less than before this season. I liked their redcurrant shirts (I think they should keep their colours as that, there aren't many clubs that play in that sort of colour), so much, in fact. I might buy one, because they'll probably be cheap nowadays. I also feel quite sad to see Highbury for the final time, it's a grand stadium with a large history and a number of appearances in videogames under its belt. (I've heard that the stadium is also haunted by the ghost of former Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman). Highbury is one of the most recognisable stadia in the world but I think Arsenal deserve to play at a 60,000 seater stadium like Ashburton Grove (that's a better name than Emirates Stadium IMO) they are one of the biggest clubs in England, plus they've been in the top flight for the longest time. Finally, Arsenal deserve 4th place. They've done very well at home and have been brilliant in the Champions League, despite having a pretty naff away form this season (you drew with us for god's sake). And to see the final whistle being blown at Highbury tomorrow will signal the end of a fantastic era.

I don't think Alan Pardew will be feilding a changed, more younger team today against the spurs. I just saw an interview with him on sky sports news and he just said that this is a fight for places for the FA cup final.

And in preparation for the final, you don't wanna lose you last game of the season, so I think Pardew will be looking for a good game.

Ok so we lsot, but im proud of our team, we've come along way this season and to come so close is really annoying. 10 palyers posioned before the match plus injuries and we still put a full squad out - Michael Dawson sickest person on pitch still put 90 minutes in. the fact that Marin Jol accpets the defeat and does not file for an appeal and accpets the defeat even though all the things that have happened, show how gracious he is and waht a job he's done this season. Arsenal were destined to come 4th to be honest. Just cant bear it...at least we accpet defeat...no matter what Arsenal suporters say, were catching up quick, with new and improving players getting better and better.

I really don't. I mean, yeh you've had a good season (by your standards anyway), but I just don't see this shift in power in the near future.

The one thing I can definately say about spurs is that they have become a much better team under Jol, and it could have been even better for next season had you got the 4th European spot. But as that didn't happen (hehe:awesome: ) I don't think Tottenham will have that extra edge to compete with the big boys next season, maybe UEFA cup again, but no way Champions League. Look at you last season, 5th and AC Milan. We've got a chance, then look at you this season, 3rd. We just need to stengthen our defence, so we don't encounter weaknesses like during the winter period. We've got everything to gain and nothing to lose.

How ever much I like Arsenal Englishmen (however limited) appear in England line ups, a 17 year old lad who has never played a highly competitive match should not be selected for the worlds biggest footballing competition. Much more experienced goal scorers are needed, his time will come but its not now. I shall eat my words if he does play and is amazing and wins us the competition.

Thats my view.
meh, you'll eat your words next season. If you hadn't of poisoned us we woulda got 4th:indeed: But you know Arsenal and cheating, just talk to Reyes.

Sorry mate, but you can't blame your loss on food poisoning. Well, I guess you can but shit happens in football. Like Thierry said in a recent interview, injuries/illness etc happen to every team and when we had important players out injured, no one showed us any sympathy. All they were saying is that we were playing poo and gone were the days when we played the beautiful football during our unbeaten run.

So, no, if you are looking for sympathy, then you are not gonna get an ounce of it from me. You gotta live with it mate, especially when you lot (spurs) were so arrogant that you had already started talking about launching an appeal if we won the champions League based on you finishing 4th, EVEN before the season was over.

Why take a 17 year old lad who hasn't played in the top flight (I don't think). He is very inexperienced and it just seems like a silly decsion to take him. Will it be worth the risk?

We didn't deserve to win??? Why don't you try playing with 10 men against the best team in Europe......I thought we played well enough considering what happened. Firstly we got the goal (which was superb Sol:awesome: ), hung onto the lead for the majority of the game and only toward the end of the match, started to tire slightly (not hard to imagine with 10 men), thus resulting in the two quick barca goals.

I agree that 10 men arsenal did surprisingly well against 11 men barcelona. They are both top class teams and 1 man would make all the difference (which it did in the end), but considering that handicap arsenal still played put up an even fight generally.

Going down to 10 men in itself is nothing glorious or credit to arsenal, however. It was a foul play by Lehmann and as a team arsenal are responsible for it.

I watched the match, and compared to last year's final this wasn't a great game.

As Ramar said, Arsenal were never going to win by sitting back for the rest of the game, which is what i think they intended to do. Maybe if Arsenal had broken the deadlock later in the game, then they might've had a better chance of winning? We can only guess.

All I can say is bad luck to Arsenal. It must've been hard to play with only 10 men. And Andy Gray had said on Sky Sports that "the referee has spoilt the spectacle final by sending off Lehmann." And the way Arsenal played until the Barcelona goal, they were just hanging on, getting more and more knackered. Fair play to them. And the ref made a big clanger booking Henry when he actually got kicked by the Barcelona player.

Stocka, I hope you had a really good time in Paris. That stadium looked amazing and must've had a fantastic atmosphere. It's just a pity that Arsenal lost, now I hope Henry decides not to rub salt into Arsenal's wounds by deciding to leave.

1. Who cares if Eboue dived, its not like Barca didnt get any free kicks from diving in dangerous positions, just becuase we finished ours..

2. Almost any other refree would of given the goal and left Lehmann on.

3. The referee was a bit odd, im not saying it would of made a difference, but you think there would of been 3 minutes stoppage time had it still been 1-0? no chance. Odd decisions like that. And Henrys yellow card? What the hell?

4. Considering how we played with 10 men, still making more chances on goal than them, imagine how we would of played with all 11.

Absolutely, before the sending off it was turning into a fast paced excellent game, with both teams playing well and Arsenal at great pace looking really promising. The sending off definately ruined the game.

If Lehmann didn't want to get sent off, he shouldn't have fouled the last man.

It was a sending off probably, but it wasn't intent, you can see by replays Lehmann was going to claim the ball but Eto's quick feet and movement meant he caught his ankles instead. I don't believe it was intended.

Sexual Chocolate
18-05-2006, 05:44 PM
ha, the replays clearly show Lehman held onto his ankle. Intent or not, he was last man and had to be sent off.

About all the 'who deserved to win' crap it doesn't matter who DESERVED it, its about who WON it, and Barcelona did. I agree that the ref was shocking and there was luck involved but at the end of the day its a cup final and all that matters is whether you win it or not.
Great attitude there Stocka. Often it takes balls to stick to sportsmanship in bizarre games like this, but you pass that test of honour with flying colours. Respect!

I never thought that Henry would ever leave Arsenal, he loves the club too much and he loves the fans. And he had always planned to be the first Arsenal skipper to play at Ashburton Grove. Let alone the Champions League final.

You are joking. Carson is nothing compared to Green. Its true you always remember the worst in people. He was amazing two seasons ago when Norwich won the old Division 1, he wasn't bad in the Premier League. This season he hasn't been so sharp, nor would you if you had that terrible defence in front of you.

I'm a dedicated oxford united supporter. During my life i've seen oxford relegated 4 times and they are now in the conference, when only 20 years ago they won the league cup and were going to go into europe (until english clubs were banned from europe thanks to LIVERPOOL).

I just thought i would express my sorrow, but i will of course go and watch them next season when they storm the conference. Oxford TID

Don't know if anyone can be sure of exact details unless they were there really.

http://football.guardian.co.uk/championsleague200405/story/0,,1450632,00.html

Attitudes to Heysel remain equivocal on Merseyside, in part because the events were never subject to detailed scrutiny. There has never been an extensive inquiry, perhaps conveniently given the chaos and inadequacy of the police response on that night. Debate over the details continues. Many accounts, including the club's version on its website, cite missile throwing by Italian fans as the spark for violence, a claim contested by other eye-witnesses, but the broad facts are uncontested.

Uefa selected a dilapidated venue for the 1985 final and allocated block Z at the predominantly Liverpool end to "neutral" fans. These tickets were sold to Italian immigrants and Belgians, who were separated from their rivals by a chicken-wire fence and a line of reluctant, inexperienced police. Liverpool fans breached the fence and charged. Juventus supporters retreated until they were forced against a retaining wall that collapsed, killing 38 Italians and a Belgian. There followed the most shocking scenes witnessed even in the dark days of the 80s, as Liverpool fans rampaged, Juve's supporters who had breached their end retaliated, and the overwhelmed police struggled to regain order.

Fields
29-05-2006, 10:03 AM
Even so, BlueStar, to simply call Liverpool supporters 'murdering scum' etc. is out of order. While we may never no exactly what happened, it is certain that UEFA, the Belgian authorities, the police, and the Juventus supporters all had a part to play in the chaos. Sorry but attitudes like that just annoy me

And the decision to ban English clubs from Europe? That's a rant for another day.

BlueStar
29-05-2006, 10:15 AM
I comepletely agree, football fans aren't one homogenous group and you can't expect people to be held accountable for the actions of people who happen to support the same team. But I don't think anyone's saying liverpool fans are murdering scum in this thread. There were definitely other factors, unsafe stadium, inept policing, debatably provocation. So it's possibly over simplistic to just say that the ban was because of liverpool fans. But if it wasn't for an element within their support, it wouldn't have happened. Saying that, it could have been any group of any team's fans, including a minority of idiots, in that situation.
