Lan adapter

If you have the lan adapter, can you use direct connection from your modem to use it, or do you need a router? I use direct connection for my 360, and want to be able to do the same with my Wii.

I said fuck it to myself and got the lan adapter from play.com. I'll use a dongle for the DS, and wired for all my consoles.
