Wii surprise coming "by September," says Fils-Aime

If you have your Wii set in WiiConnect24 mode you will be waking up to your Wii's glowing disc tray alerting you to some cool surprises in the next two months, according to teasing statements from Nintendo America honcho, Reggie Fils-Aime.

WiiConnect24 has had minimal use since the console's launch in the last year, but Reggie has said the surprises Nintendo promised at last year's E3 are "still coming".

"We announced at E3 [this year] a new channel: the Check Mii Out Channel. And we still have plans...", teased Fils-Aime.

"The surprise is coming... by the end of September," he goes on to reveal. "I think you'll like this surprise," he told GameHead.

Nintendo magazine channel (or Nintendo power Channel for US Wii owners). Every month when the new issue of ONM comes out, you can buy it digitaly on the channel with Wii points, where its downloaded and saved on that channel for you to read.

How long is this festival with Japanese games going to last? I'm betting a new channel won't be released until that is over, it wouldn't make sense putting tons of cool stuff available at once.
I did have high hopes when I first read this but considering the release date of Prime 3 i'm getting more and more certain it's just going to be the bloody Metroid Preview channel.
But if it isn't get me a few updates! Extra face, hair and items for Mii channel. Tabbed browsing, Quicktime and the new flash player for Internet channel or a demo channel! If we get any of those I will be happy.

Looking at the history of releases. A few have been on a Friday and a couple on a Tuesday. So tomorrow I would say then as you mentioned if they do make it by Spetember, if not then Tuesday.

I'm wondering if we are actually going to get the Metroid channel. If it has the same content as America it will probably be pointless though. It was a nice idea but as ever had typical failings. (It should have downloaded itself overnight for instance - Typical Wii-Connect24 failings.)

Check Mii Out seems to be getting some MAJOR time spent on it too - Will it be good though ~ Without an update (read: customisations) to existing Mii characters? I wonder how far they can actually take it...

When you say the channels were released on Friday, do you mean late friday (near midnight) or early friday... if that makes sense.

Reggie wouldn't have been referring to a European promotion in an American interview. It could've been Link's Crossbow Training, but it'd be a bit of a strange thing to mention in a conversation about WiiConnect24.

No it's not, I'm in exactly the same boat. I have no real interest in online gaming, couple that with the fact that I'm not really a fan of FPS's anyway and that I didn't enjoy what I played of the first two games means that I would easily spend more time playing a new Mii channel than I would Halo 3.

Classify "game"...

In the traditional sense Halo is indeed a "game" moreso than a channel. But look at it this way: A new Wii channel offers playability and fun. You could also say there are goals (like making a famous Mii/doodling in photo channel, spinning globe to find a country). You could say it's 'full-blown' too as it sits constantly on your console, unlike a disk.

The argument is completely based upon your view of what a game is. Most people say that the production values are what seperate games from non-games/casual games and, as you compared Halo to a Wii channel surely the production values of Halo are higher?
But I also feel this point is void as you could say the Mii channel has an excellent tactile feel to it which promotes user interaction through physical (rumble) feedback whereas Halo uses it to highlight weapon fire/explosions. The graphics comparison isn't even worth delving into as its just a preference of style.

Channels can be better than some 'full-blown' games.
For example: I'm sure 'Everybody Votes' is vastly more interesting to someone who is curious about society more than any game previous has ever been...

The channel seems pretty good, pretty much what I was expecting. There are some cool Miis out there too. The first contest Mii (Mario) is pretty unoriginal, but no doubt I'll enter some time this week.

The Oct 10th (3.1) is the latest update, it even mentions at the bottom of the update note that you don't need to if you have it.

The channel is excellent! I adore the 'todays best mii's' section where you can import the ones you like! All of them were amazing! Espcially Kenny and Mr.Burns.

The Initials are a little annoying, but the mii should look like the person anyway!

Anyhoo, it's great but it's a shame you can't search by initials or creator. I've created a brilliant Ugly Betty and put it in female, design and it wasn't there...I only got the top 20 I think.

I took a quick look through the operations manual for this yesterday, it explains a bit more about the contest aspect and an option to take photo's with winning Mii's or something, can't really remember now. :heh:

I personally hope for an update to the Mii channel that will allow for more variety and possibly accessories for my Mii's. I hope that this service does not allow "unauthorisedx Mii's to be uploaded ie. Mii's created offline using internet tools and then BlueToothed back to the Wiimote cuas that would be unfair. I have some of these in my Mii Plaza and although they look great, they just further exemplify how limited the current Mii Creation utility actually is!

- Being able to name your Miis instead of just having the initials system

Yeah some better ways of searching would be cool. I've been on this channel three or four times in the past week since downloading it, so its proved to be decent enough! I added an Arnie and a Shigsy as well as a few others (including a Naruto) to my Mii collection- I just needa stick on Wii Sports or something and get some use outta them.

So, when you vote for your favourite Mario, you have to trawl through a random selection of Miis that have been submitted for the contest, whether they look anything like Mario or not (a lot of the ones that I saw were obviously people's 'joke' entries and didn't look like him). I assumed that Nintendo would whittle down the entries to a Top 50 or something and then we could vote. This way, some of the really good entries could get ignored just because they don't show up on the random list. Shame.

The thing i was most looking forward too has turned out complete shite.

Sure you can go through quite a selection of these so called Mario's but i also thought Nintendo would have carefully looked at them to see that they were are actually Mario without a cap before submitting them for judging.

In the end i had to vote for 3 Marios which 'kinda' looked like him, instead of thinking to myself they were amazing.

Most were absolutely rubbish, with at least half not Mario at all.

The thing which annoyed me the most? Mine and most of us on here obviously had 10x better Marios and haven't even had a chance of winning!

I thought my Mario was crap until I saw the others and then I realised I'd made a pretty good attempt. Gave the hip-hop one a miss as it's not really my bag but have entered a King Arthur, although it was based on imagination rather than any actual representation from film. I'm finding this new channel quite fun although agree the voting is too random to ensure any decent results.

Just made my own 70s Mii; I hope there's at least some variation when it comes to judging, and they're not all 'big glasses, afro and moustache' ones (much like mine is!).

Judging for Crusoe is open today, and it's getting harder to find genuine Crusoes amongst the mass of non-Crusoe Miis that have been sent in. None that I found really did stand out, though. They just look like older Jesuses to me..
