View Full Version : Edge Issue 156! write-up of Revo Pad - A MUST READ

I am an subscriber to Edge, and I received the latest issue in this mornings post.
Edge is well respected UK mutilformat videogames magazine which has been going for well over 10 years.
In this issue Edge has a detailed write up of the Revolution controller at TGS. They where one of the few people in the world to get there hands on the controller before TGS
Here are some extracts that I thought you might me interested in reading
“Unthreatening and uncomplicated, it begs to be picked up. And when it is its almost impossible to put down.”
“There’s a soft rubbery finish on the pad and buttons surface, meaning although the handset looks hard, sharp-edged and slippery, the sensation of holding it is effortless”
“This controller makes you fell like a magician, becoming so settled in your hand there might as well be nothing there”
“The controller makes it instantly apparent how much of a cheap fudge the 3D controls of the last two generations has been”
“There’s no immediate reason to believe that playing with Revolution will need to be any more playing with a mouse: rest your arm on your knee of sofa (couch) arm, and direct the action with gentle tilts and turns”
And last my fav
“Returning to TGS’s showflow after playing the demos is a faintly surreal process. Suddenly, the 360 looks incredibly old-fashioned. Picking up a DualShock for a quick play of Rogue Galaxy seems preposterous”.
There is also a free DVD in this issue, something to do with TGS. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet!!

The Rev cover is good, and Gary Penn's column is very Rev friendly this month.
The DVD ain't all that impressive but I did like the footage of the Tokyo game/toy shops that was on there.

I bought the last issue, which was the first time I've read it. Someone on the boards said they sometimes do articles about the industry and how to get in it, and with Uni decisions and courses coming I thought it was time to do some research. Loved the last issue and I definitely intend on buying it regularly.

Yeah good issue overall, did a good write up on TGS for MS and Sony aswell.
Edge has always been a mag that I can't wait for to be delivered, unfortunately my post comes at about 11am which sucks.

Edge also confirmed that the sensors where wired to the Revolution. The sensors themselves will be supplied out of the box mounted on a thin metal spacer, the whole unit is about a foot long (30cm). Players can even dismount the sensors and stick them onto either side of the TV if they wish.

Wow i hope the controller gets that kind of front-page treatment here in the States, the best part is it grabs attention without the need to have Mario and Yoshi plastered all over it. Looks rather sophisticated.....take heed Nintendo Power

Once every year they do a working in the industry special issue, usually comes with a booklet interviewing different people at different companies, mix of different jobs, i.e. graphic artist, modeller, producer, director and so on. Sadly, I think this year's issue has already been and gone.

Apologies for the error in writing this comment, it should have meant the A and B buttons on the Revolution pad have a soft rubbery finish not the casing. This is an error on my part because i sped read the article.
Obviously not very good at it!!! :indeed: :indeed:

Cool. I might pick up a copy from my 24 hours asda on the way to school tomorrow. Anuway, I use to be a reader of GamesMaster and well, recently I have stopped buying mags because of the net so, if nobody minds, can you please tell me if GamesMaster has by any chance said anything about the Rev in any of their latest issues and if so, what did they say?
Thanks. :)

Never read Gamesmaster, but i might pop down to my local newsagent to check out the latest issue.
Does anybody remember a mag called Arcade, it was published by Future the same company that does Edge, Around the PS1 vs. N64 era.
It was a like fun version of Edge, but had some killer articles too.

I remember ARCADE, it was a brilliant mag, basically a gamer lifestyle one in the same was as things like FHM are a men's lifestyle one. Sadly Future screwed it up by relaunching it as some crappy pulp paper thing, was absolute rubbish, can only assume they didn't have the numbers to keep it running.
Britprog
26-10-2005, 09:02 PM
Yeah, I had a subsciption to Arcade and when they relaunched it with that "loo roll paper" magazine I was well pissed off.
It only lasted 2-3 Issues, then Future started sending me PS Magazine, those cheeky sods.
I remember one article when they played Gran Turismo, and the journo started drinking to see how alcohol affected the his lap times. Great stuff.
I think I may have all the issues tucked awayin my loft somewhere, might dig them up in the weekend.

I wouldn't buy Edge for a single article. The article is 8 pages long but two pages are pictures only. Save your €6 for your Revolution fund!!
I am sure they will post the article on there website when issue 157 comes out on November 24th. They have recently posted the PDZ preview which was published in issue 155.

Well my mum bought it for me for once so I'm happy
The DVD is great, OH MY Japan looks fantastic, and all those cute girls  I must go there sometime.
Anyone else love Iwata's voice when he tries to speak english?
The Microsoft conference was so poor, watching it, it really did feel like EDGE said, outdated. I'm still getting one though, I want Kameo.
Haha that Feel the Magic 2 trailer, it looks quite fun, I like the theme song on the trailer for Sonic Rush too.
MGS4, if thats real time than very impressive indeed.

When you hear Iwata speak on the DVD its a voice over. Because the TGS was ofcourse taking place in Japan it would have been downright rude for Iwata to speak in English in the press conference.
Iwata's English isn't that bad really, he did well in GDC and E3 this year!!!!
I had a dream last night that I was looking for this issue of EDGE, and when I eventually found it in a shop it was in a resealable plastic bag. I didn't want to buy it, so I started to read it in the shop, but then I woke up. Weird. :wtf:

I watched the DVD last night, I have to admit the Jap's are odd. When TGS ends all the booth girls line up (which is a beautiful sight) and leave one by one with Auld Lang Syne playing in the background!!

It's nice to see that people are really latching on to what EDGE is all about. It was getting so tiring on the cube-europe forums where just about every month, you'd have an average game release on the Cube getting a 5 or a 6, and then everyone laying into EDGE saying that they were Sony/MS fanboys, and that they hated Nintendo, even though those scores didn't necessarily represent a "bad" score.
It would be really cool if a few people on here started to get into EDGE, so we could discuss it every month. Traditionally they have been excellent at playing devil's advocate - provoking discussion by taking a stance on a certain aspect of gaming. You can see this in effect with the X360. They've published the glossy press pics and the hyperbole from J Allard, and now they're questioning the content, and putting pressure on MS to deliver real gameplay quality as well as high-end visuals. They aren't being Sony/Nintendo fanboys, but they are provoking debate, which encourages people to think, and not just accept what the latest press release tells you... it's good journalism. There's a similar stance being taken with the PSP - EDGE are asking where the content is, and are praising the DS for delivering on its mission goals.
It's certainly a far cry from when EDGE were lambasting Nintendo for that press conference with the Pac Man link up play...

Yeah, but Nintendo deserved to be skewered, put on a spit and then basted in their own juices, not just lambasted, for that E3 showing. OK, Pac-Man Vs is a good fun little diversion, but that wasn't something to base pretty much your whole E3 showing around.

Oh I agree entirely.
Makes you wonder if the "lean spell" has been in order to get the DS and Revolution up to speed though?
