View Full Version : De Blob

Man!ac also reveal an exclusive Wii game from TKQ: De Blob. De Blob is based on a free PC game of the same name - of which you can try here. De Blob is a physics-based puzzle game. According to Joost van Dongen, the lead programmer of the PC Game:
"It is a 3D game in which the player controls a ball of paint rolling through the city. The ball can absorb coloured NPC’s to become larger and change its colour. With the paint, the player can then proceed to paint the entire city. Almost everything is paintable: buildings, trees, cars and using the paint trace even the ground."
The game requires you to do colour matching and colour mixing (need orange paint? Get Red and Yellow). The PC Game is fairly basic, and it looks like it will be expanded for the Wii. The graphics have also recieved a massive overhaul from the free PC game - thanks to a bigger budget provided by THQ. De Blob is due for release in 2008.

I suppose you would control it by holding the controller sidewards (like a NES controller) and tilting it. In other news, I am über hyped for this game, because I loved the freeware PC version, and it appears that this version is going to be greatly expanded compared to that version.

It says in the article that you roll De Blob around with the nunchuk (I hope they mean the joystick not the gyros but I doubt it because they don't mention either) and aim at targets with the Wiimote.

Officially announced:
AGOURA HILLS, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–THQ Inc. (NASDAQ:THQI) today announced de Blob™, currently in development exclusively for the Wii™ and Nintendo DS™, is scheduled to spread color and fun to gamers worldwide in February 2008. Developed for the Wii by THQ’s Australia-based studio, Blue Tongue Entertainment, and Nintendo DS by THQ’s Helixe studio, de Blob’s innovative style features ground and aerial maneuvers and color-spray gameplay that take full advantage of the Wii Remote™ and DS Stylus™. Players will take on the form of de Blob in a bouncing battle to explore, liberate and revitalize Chroma City, which has been drained of all color and life by the evil I.N.K.T. Corporation.
“In the spirit of some of Nintendo’s most innovative properties, de Blob’s simple game mechanic will be fun and easy for core and casual gamers to learn and reveal unbelievably addicting levels of depth and complexity as they progress through the game,” said Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. “We look forward to unveiling de Blob at next week’s E3 press event.”
“With de Blob’s innovative control scheme, a swing of the Wii Remote or flick of the DS Stylus sends de Blob ricocheting and swinging through the city with splashes of color in his wake,” said Steve Dauterman, senior vice president of product development. “Gamers will be able to liberate the lifeless city of Chroma and create a collaboration of energy, music and color that is a reflection of each player’s gaming style.”
About de Blob
de Blob is an action puzzle title that allows players to explore and liberate an alien city from the evil, monochromatic I.N.K.T. Corporation that has taken over the city and outlawed all color and fun from daily life. Playing as de Blob, gamers will embark on a quest to re-animate the city of Chroma, and bring spunk and character back to the oppressed, by splattering buildings, landmarks, and citizens with color. de Blob features an intricate single player campaign as well as a multiplayer experience that supports up to four competitors via split screen. The game was conceived for the Windows PC by a team of nine students studying Game Design & Development at Utrecht University’s School of the Arts in the Netherlands. At the time of conception, sections of Utrecht were being rebuilt and the principal task in creating the game was to convey how the railroad station area of Utrecht would look in 10 years. The city of Utrecht has since adopted the character of de Blob to be its mascot.
This part sounds rather odd:
and bring spunk and character back to the oppressed, by splattering buildings, landmarks, and citizens
Then again, American English doesn't have the 3rd definition of spunk (the definition that came to my mind first)

Most Wii owners have the attitude of buying stuff they know nothing about.

WHat bothers me the most is that a lot of games that are worth full price are ignored until they get cheaper, because they're not 100 hour long, when they're happy to fork over more for equally short games with Space Marines and also happy to get bent over DLC.

That's not what I said. I compared it to people who have more than enough money to buy them and spend them on DLC, a lot of it worthless and that should be with the game (Megaman being the case in point, it's absurd), when they refuse to buy games like Z&W, Wario, Boom Blox, etc... at full price. I'm thinking this will happen with De Blob too. DLC is one of the worst things right now in the industry, but that's something for another discussion :P

Its just a question of personal taste. Many would rather buy expansions for a game they already love than buy a new game, nothing wrong with that. I do agree that alot of it is worthless but if I enjoy the game then I think what the hell and buy it anyway. Like you said though, its a different topic altogether : peace:

Other 3rd parties take note, this is how you make a great game on the Wii!
My copy arrived an hour ago from play.com and I spent all of that time just jumping, painting and just generally messing around the first level, its so much fun!
Whats great is how the game music reacts to how you paint the buildings. I picked a funky style of music to play and it just reminded me of ToeJam and Earl for some reason :heh:
From the opening cutscene ( which is great ) the game just screams FUN. I was also glad I could get staright into the game as it teaches you how to play as you are playing the first world. No tutorial level = WIN!

Got mine today too, managed to get a quick game in this morning and yeah from what I played I definitely agree with you H-o-T, it's pure quality.
After only a few minutes with this game you can tell just how much effort has gone in to making it, the controls, the visuals, the music (my God the music! :yay:), the overall style of the game has been so well crafted. Definitely right up there with Eledees and Zack&Wiki for the best third party Wii title.
So yeah, can't wait to sit down and really get in to it later. And I'd seriously recommend everyone to pick this game up and show some support to a truly deserving third party dev on Wii. Plus it's still only £18 on Play.com (http://www.play.com/Games/Wii/4-/3593386/De-Blob/Product.html) which is a proper bargain! http://n-europe.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif

Got this friday together with Wario Land. Allthough Wario Land is a 2D animated piece of art, I find this game actually generally more entertaining.. Then again, I haven't played much of either game, as something came up (namely MEGAMAN 9). But yeah, the artstyle is great, cutscenes funny, gameplay relaxing, and the music.. Damn the music. Bloody fantastic, especially at the beginning of a level where you are making the music yourself with the sounds you get when you paint stuff. This game satisfies a need for platform action in a same way that a Banjo Threeie would have, at least for me.

Well I just spent half an hour (yep, a whole half hour!) eejiting about in the first level so here are some very initial impressions. I'm probably over exaggerating but is it just me or is there more than a hint of Pixar about this? I think so anyway- definitely in the cutscenes! Gameplay wise, its all good thus far. I keep hoping for a little more from the jumping, but I'm sure I'll either get used to it, or maybe you learn a trick or two as the game goes on? The main (and oh so slight) gripe I have is that I've been trying to "wall kick" between buildings as a way to climb them, but I can't seem to get any extra height from my attempts. :heh:
Musically, very classy so far. Its like DIY SimCity music- splash some yellow to add in some flutey sounds, some purple to add some funk... then the coffee to add... some DJ Jazzy Jeff style scratches. :awesome:

As for Wario Land; I think it has a lot of replay value to be honest; the game is amazing, I love it; the missions add some difficult incentive to keep playing. Main games easy but the challenges are extremely tricky!

Hmm thats a toughie.
Wario Lands main game can easily be completed in say 5 hours but if you like unlocking everything it will take you 4 times aslong. I was all of Saturday and I have still got challenges to do and treasures to find.
De Blob is kinda the same. The main game is around 8 hours long but if you want to get 100% on each level it will take you a long time. I have been on this since 11 this morning and have just finished the 5th world now. I have done them all 100% so that kinda gives you an idea of how long the game is.
If money is an issue then you might aswell snap up De Blob as it only £18 on play.com.

Would those that have this and Wario Land say this has more lasting appeal than Wario Land? At this moment in time, I can only afford the one game out of the two and want something with a bit more lasting appeal.
While I really like WarioLand for me DeBlob is the better game because of its length, multi-player mode and just being more fun :yay: Cant go wrong with either though.

A whopping 20th place on the Wii only UK charts for its debut, not even close to All console. Yikes.

That'll only be after the weekend sales though. It could fare better in next weeks charts after having had this week full week of sales under its belt.

It's not even in the top 10 on gameplay.co.uk (a fairly "hardcore" website) which is ominous. Most people who buy from there are more educated on what games are actually good. WarioLand is like 3rd though so....

Well let's just say people say that for basically absolutely every game that ever sells under expectations and that scenario you mentioned virtually never ends up happening (apart from ridiculous exceptions like the casual crowd titles).
Fact is the first 2 or 3 days or so sales of most hardcore games (for any system in general) are massively over the rest of that week

Just got the last 2 levels to beat now.
On the Fun Park level I had got 100% on everything apart from the billboards and I just couldnt find them. I searched around the level and finally found the last 2 but they were high above me on a tube.
I spent a good 10 mins trying to get up there, I tried jumping, wall jumping and even firing out of the cannon but nothing worked. I was getting very frustrated as im trying to get 100%/all rewards ( apart from the time rewards ) on my first run and this was going to spoil things.
I was just about to call it quits and head to the exit then I decided to try the cannon one last time and sure enough I figured it out. You had to fire yourself out of the cannon but press B in mid air so you stopped and slammed onto the platform below where the billboards were located. With 4 mins left on the clock I pegged it to the exit :)

It doesnt matter if its hardcore or casual the fact is its a fantastic game, is fun to play and looks to have been created with passion rather than quickly made and shoved on the shelf. These reasons alone make it more than worthy to be a big seller.

How do you even know it's 'famous around the casual market'? It's been out for less than a week, and the downloadable PC game didn't really make an impact.

There are games that don't sell hundreds of thousands in the first week but keep selling for a long time as word of mouth spreads, hopefully if this doesn't get a big boost of sales at first, it'll at least be one of those.

I played some more de Blob last night, but I didn't complete the level because they take so long and I like to be as thorough as possible. I had the game paused for a while during the Champions League highlights, but I ended up turning it off cos I knew I wouldn't be going back to it... There's a fairly decent showing of de Blob in my HMV here, but thats cos its a new release- I dread to think how well hidden it will be when the new releases for this weekend are out.

If you want to try and get everything in a level you pretty much have to set aside around 70-80mins. My average time was about 70mins per level, then again there was always a tree/building/billboard I missed and I would have to spend a good 10mins looking for that!
After finishing the main game I had a shower and watched a dvd before going to bed. I couldnt sleep so I got back up and put De Blob back on :) I finished getting all the awards on the first 4 levels and then finished off all of the extra challenges you get when you beat a level. The billboard challenge took some doing but it made me alot better at wall riding/jumping.

Yeah, I'm surprised at how long it takes. I haven't completely done any of the stages yet, but I like to do as much as possible nonetheless. With that in mind I just didn't think I could put another 30-40 minutes into it after the footy last night- means I can go back and redo the first few sections of that level again though!
I've noticed in the level summaries that I've missed the odd tree here and there- I don't look forward to going back and trying to get them all cos it can be so easy to miss little things like that! :blank:

You can get through all of the 10 levels in about 7-8 hours. As for replay value you have multiplayer modes, freeplay, 2 secret missions after each level and challenges to complete in each stage. The challenges range from paint everything in the level to finding a blimp floating around and paint that :)

Just to confirm what has already been said many times over ...... this game is just f'ing amazing.
I opened it this morning with the intention of only giving it a quick glance to see what the fuss was about but I have only just managed to put the thing down.
So much time and effort has clearly gone into this , it defies belief.
Cutscenes , soundtrack , controls , level design and number of unlockables are just perfect and I would agree that this is quite possibly the best 3rd party effort on Wii. It just screams fun all the way.
I have been through the first 3 levels only so far , but was surprised how misleadingly expansive they were , so much to do , and plenty to go back for.
And to think I very nearly didn't pick it up - so if there is anyone out there who is still questioning this games worth (despite the previous glowing opinions) then don't hesitate in the slightest.

Opps at computerandvideogames. (http://computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=198662)
THQ has just released its bizarre yet quirky new blob rolling game, De Blob, on Wii. That costs £35. But you can get it for free… on PC. Or at least, you can get ‘The Blob’ for free, and it looks damn near identical. …Now, we don’t know which came first, who ripped off who, but this Dutch site explains< "Gemaakt door 8 studenten Game Design & Development aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht en 1 student Informatica aan de Universiteit Utrecht." Just as we thought...
This demo was produced by a group of Dutch university students for a project, and was released years ago. They sold the rights to the game to THQ, which is how it came to be a commercial title.

Anyone else not find the controls in this to be a bit hit and miss as well as the camera? I'm finding those to be true and for the gameplay to be a bit repetitive. But then I haven't really been in the mood for playing games really lately. Perhaps I'll shelf it and come back to it further down the line when I've got my gaming mojo back.

Got the game today.
Yeah, the controls seem a bit off, but i think you have to get used to them. Like when u jump on the wall and he doesnt jump is just like pushing a button and he doesnt jump, ur not meant to jump right after hitting the wall, stuff like that, that we tend to blame on waggle when we wouldn't on buttons.
I found it easy to put down, but it is relaxing and has great music.
I'm renting this game from LoveFilm at the moment, and I'm really pleased I did - it really is amazin fun. My only gripe is that you have to set aside a fair chunk of time to get through each level - something I don't really have much of at the moment!

Here's some promising news from the main page of N-E
Great news for fans of de Blob: THQ announce that there's more to come from the little, inky goo ball!
You loved it, we loved it; it was difficult to espace the admiration for THQ's de Blob when it released last year.
The paint-themed platformer earned rave reviews everywhere, but its colourful style and modest marketing campaign led many to worry that the title would not perform as well as it deserves. Well, today we can put some of those concerns to rest, as IGN reveal just a portion of the success de Blob has managed in its few months out.
Straight from the NPD, the game managed to shift 230,000 copies in North America in December alone. Consider the fact that the game released in September, and then add all other regions to the equation and we can predict a healthy running-total for THQ's gem. Add to the fact that Nintendo's own Wario Land: The Shake Dimension only managed to sell through 150,000 units in the same festive period, and de Blob is a force not to be reckoned with.
No doubt the question on everypne's lips is: is it enough for a sequel? Speaking with IGN, a rep for THQ had the following comforting words for us:
"We're pleased with de Blob's performance worldwide... expect to see more of de Blob in the future."
So there we go. No firm confirmations or platforms noted, but at least we know it's not the last we'll see of de Blob.
darksnowman

Thats great news. :hehe:
I wonder what they will do with de Blob? More platforming or...? What they have to do is maintain the high quality catchy tunes. Décor (Blissful) is so good.

All this talk of de Blob recently has got me wanting another copy. Didn't finish it last year because I just got a little bored but then I had other things to be playing through so it didn't get my full attention. Have a few games on the go at the moment so perhaps it's not the best time to get it again although I'm sure I'll be finished a few of the ones I have now pretty swiftly.

I picked this up for Eenuh's birthday, and I've watched her playing it today. It's absolutely fucking awesome, and I'm definitely going to pick it up at some point when I'm home.
There's just so many little touches to make this game special. For a start, I love how they blend in the music with the gameplay. The more colourful the world, the bouncier the music is. Also, every time you paint something, the sound effect kinda adds to the background music.
Definitely recommend it. This is the type of game that I bought the Wii for. :)

I've nearly completed this, i've thoroughly enjoyed it. My only gripe is in parts of later levels the shake-to-jump mechanic becomes a chore, but ultimately doesn't detract from the fun too much.
I've not gone back to earlier levels to check, does the game save your painted town? I'm guessing not due to the 512mb flash restraints, but that'd be a great inclusion for De Blob 2.

What motion are you doing to jump? I think the game tells you to flick down the way, doesn't it? Well, I found that it works just as well if you flick up to jump (and it feels more natural to me) then do a downward swat to stomp the baddies.

This sold better than I expected.
THQ's unique paint-splattering Wii game de Blob has sold over 700K units worldwide, CEO Brian Farrell said on Tuesday during the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco.
Even in a wretched retail environment, the game has been able to hold its original $49.99 price point after about five months of availability. “We can make money on games like that," Farrell said.
Farrell described a "three-prong" Wii strategy that includes the publishing of high production value, "Nintendo-esque" games like de Blob, value titles like Big Beach Sports, which has sold over 1.3 million units, and licensed titles such as those found in the publisher's Nickelodeon portfolio.
The exec also hinted at an upcoming unannounced Wii game that is "very focused ... niche" but nonetheless expected to do well on the platform.
"The competition on the Wii right now is from Nintendo. That's what we've got to attack," he added. "The people who buy Nintendo games, [we want to] get them to buy things like de Blob."
As for the upcoming release of the Nintendo DSi handheld, Farrell said THQ would be migrating its "biggest brands" to the platform, adding that there will be new gameplay opportunities thanks to the DSi's new features.

THQ has reported strong success with the well-received Wii-exclusive de Blob, Big Beach Sports and licensed titles.
Company CEO Brian Farrell revealed last week that the unique de Blob has sold over 700k units worldwide, and even during troubled economic times has managed to retain its original $49.99 price point after 5 months on the market. Farrell discussed a "three prong" strategy for approaching the Wii - including "high production" games like de Blob; value titles for example Beach Sports, and finally licensed products.
There was also hints of an unannounced Wii title that's "very focused?niche", but is expected to do well. The main competition THQ feel is Nintendo themselves: "The people, who buy Nintendo games, [we want to] get them to buy things like de Blob."
On the portable front THQ is looking to bring key franchises to the DSi/DS.

I got this today as well and ended up playing for over an hour! I love it, although I'm yet to get to grips fully with the controls. It's a great game, I'm not sure if I prefer it to boom blox as I really enjoyed that, but I can see myself playing it right through to the end which is a rare thing for me.
With regrads to sales - I had a look on vgchartz.com today and was really pleased to see how well this has sold. Same with Boom Blox, both should easily surpass 1 million by the summer which will be great. House of the Dead: Overkill is selling really well in it's first few weeks and No More Heroes is apporoaching 500,000, which again I think is a fairly good acheivement. Okami has surpassed 200,000 sales, when despite a strong start the PS2 version only managed 150,000. Again great news as the title had no marketing what so ever.
I think the amount of 'install bases' the Wii has now is going to do wonders for sales. With nearly 50m Wii consoles in peoples homes now there's no reason why decent 3rd party games made specifically for the system, with a good amount of effort can reach the magic million mark (backed by a decent advertising campaign of course). Hopefully we'll see more games like De Blob and HotD:OK on Wii in the future.

I really like what I've played of de Blob as well. The only issue for me was the jumping, I would have just preferred A to be jump instead of waving the controller but apart from that I think it's really good. I'm glad games like this are selling on Wii because stuff like this is the reason I got the console.

Question: is there a way to save the game other than reaching the end of the level? Because I can take ages trying to get all the tasks and painting everything, and I'd just like to have shorter playing sessions (don't have much time to play) yet still be able to finish painting everything.

I know what you mean, the way it sticks to walls sometimes & can't get up to where you want to go other times? But it feels like it was made that way, rather than buggy controls. Just need to get used to how jumping, sticking etc works in different situations...

Yeah it's not buggy controls, it's your actual character sticking to a wall. It does my head in though. Also agree about the not being able to save during a level. I mean is this the 90's? A real issue for me when the game is frustrating me.

Only picked this one up recently, and really enjoying it! True, the controls are sticky, but it's a design choice rather than buggy controls. When you want to jump on a roof, and you hit the wall, the wall-sticking mechanic comes into action and you stick to the wall. But yes, the levels can drag on too long without savepoint.
Anyways, my girlfriend is absolutely loving it. While I'm off to earn some cold; hard cash, she spends her days 'blobbing'.

Ok, so I got this recently (thanks to you guys raving over it.) and I must say this game is brilliant.
It's simple, addictive, charming, fun, relaxing and a bunch of other things I hadn't felt in game in a long time. And the music is just gorgeous
The only issues I had were the previously mentioned ledge-jumping difficulties (solved by pressing Z. He regains his senses immediatly) and the fact that those levels are REALLY long. Luckily, no one sleeps near my Wii, so I can just Pause the game for a while.
Thank you, Tellyn, Eenuh, Flinky and N-E in general, for convincing me to buy this fantastic gem of a game :)

Had my first real OCD session with it on the weekend, spent just over 2 hours on 1 stage. Awesome news! Lets hope its still on the Wii.
THQ is rolling out the sequels in fiscal year 2012, with releases planned for Saints Row 3, a Darksiders sequel, and a follow-up to the Wii-exclusive hit de Blob.
During the THQ investor call today, CEO Brian Farrell continued listing off upcoming games after outing a new Red Faction title and Homefront for release during fiscal year 2011, with three more sequels planned for release during fiscal year 2012, which runs from April of 2011 to March of the following year.
A new Darksiders title is a no-brainer, consider the success the first has seen, especially during one of the busiest post-holiday seasons in recent memory. The Saints Row series of Grand Theft Auto-inspired games is also a big breadwinner for the company, so fans can expect to see Saints Row 3 as well.
The biggest surprise for me is a follow-up to de Blob, which remains one of my favorite titles on the Nintendo Wii even now, after a year and four months of new Wii titles have come and gone. I didn't think the game had done well enough to warrant a sequel, but I am tremendously excited to learn otherwise.
Now I realize the Darksiders fans will be the most vocal in the comments section, but can I get a little de Blob love?

I quite like not saving during levels, makes you put aside a good couple of hours to play. What would be nice, is when you've completed the main level, if it could stop the clock, so you can try find all the hidden stuff without constantly dying from time running out.

Interesting how there's no mention of the DS version though, especially as they show an iPhone one. Looks like it might have been canned then.
I did some digging earlier today and it seems they've quietly exterminated it. It's a shame really, it seemed pretty much finished.
Helixe, the developers of the DS version of De Blob, were actually shut down in November 2008, unfortunately.

I don't like how he refers to the other consoles having a "normal controller". I'm mentally replacing that word with "conventional".
Then again, doesn't he know that by the time they finish the Xbox 360 port you won't be able to use any controller? Microsoft plan on sending out the secret explode signal to all xbox controllers 48 hours after Natal launches.

Sounds good about multiplatform. Definitely good to see the series being expanded in a big way.
