What does everyone think is the best pc game ever?
Half-life gets my vote

Dieter

I think mine would be Quake 3. That includes trickjumping, botmatches and online/LAN play. I've lost count on how many hours I've clocked on it just trickjumping around a funmap (think skatepark-ish but Q3 style) listening to Captain Immy....

In fact, I think I'll go do that some more now... where was that darn cd again?

Final Fantasy 7 or Half-Life.

Or how about Sim City, or would Counter-Strike be seperate from Half-Life?

Half-Life/CS 1.6

(Command and Conquer, too)

Jordan
22-10-2005, 05:52 PM
I'll have to give a selection and why.

Doom/Quake = the "original" first person shooter.
The Sims = although it was kinda shit, it made PC gaming popular.
Half-Life series along with all its mods = CS1.6 is still one of the most played games.
Everquest = the first MMO game ever.
Sim City = the first popular management game
Command And Conquer = simply brilliant RTS action.

But my fave PC game? Well... Half-Life 2. It's the only game i've played 8 times and It has countless mods.

Im playing through Half life for the first time now and i dont see whats so amazing about it?its good but not great.

Jordan
22-10-2005, 06:46 PM
Chris, it may not seem big now. But Half-Life came out during the "UT" generation. Mindless violence and no story. Half-Life was an amazing breath of fresh air. Half-Life 2 is better i feel, because it plays so differently.

christophicus
22-10-2005, 06:54 PM
OK that may be true but you guys are talking about best games ever and ,i think that the best game should stand the test of time, and in my oppinion UT does more then HL.

I know that many people will think me a heathen for saying this .I can see how it would have been seen when it first came out and i agree that this might make it one of the best games ever, but i think UT has aged better because it is more geared towards multiplayer as is cs which i think is really good.

I played through Schleichfahrt (Achimedian Dynasty) from 1996 in 2005 the first time and for me it's the best PC game but I heard it's similar to Wing Commander:

other games I enjoyed: CnC (3), Freelancer, SW Republic Commando, Yager

never played HL2 but HL1 (got the generations box, actually only for CS) and I got quickly annoyed killing mutants (there's a difference between zombies and mutants for me) what was also a reason for me not to try out HL2.

I got Half life when it 1st came out all thoses years ago. And it was so different to everything else i ever played. So that's gotta be where my vote goes. And if you missed out on HL around when it came out you just won't get it. Especially if you compare it to todays offerings.

Maniac Manion and Lucas Arts adventure games in general.
Unreal Tournament
Oh and Dues Ex 1. An amazing amazing game at the time, merged RPG and FPS.
And PES, although not the best game, one that I've devoted the most hours to.

I'm probably one of the only people that will say this but i think Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic : The Sith Lords.
I think it is a really addictive game which you can fully custoisme your Jedi/Sith. Though i did hear the 1st one has a better plot, i haven't got it yet :(

Either Max Payne 2 - Not because of how technically advanced it was, but because the story was amazing. It was so gripping, and pretty moving towards the end...

..or Hitman Contracts - For me it felt so much more freebased, and non-linier then so many games promised to be, yet failed.

gotta disagree with you there buddy, hl2 is the first fps to throw you into a world so utterly convincing with almost real life physics implemented to almost everything.

what its done, rather than cause a revolution on a par with say Halo and Goldeneye on consoles it has simply raised the bar so high that everybody making an fps untill half life 3 will be forced to follow valves example. thats industry change, not just genre.

oh and while im here, i gotta say warcraft 3 is the best fun ive ever had with an online pc experience. hands down.

EDIT i forgot to mention Steam. i know we all kinda hate it, but what it represents is the start of genuine online, high speed access to games without publishers interests being proiritiesed over those of the gamer and the developer. respect for that ya'll.

For basic combat in a first-person shooter I think every developer should be following F.E.A.R. (if they really have to follow an existing game and not forge their own ideas that is ;) ).

Half-Life² remains my current favourite (for single-player), simply because of its bleak atmospheric quality and also because of its variety in level design and gameplay. But, its more repetitive nature aside, I can't help thinking F.E.A.R.'s take on combat is just that little bit more entertaining.

'utterly convincing' is relative. I see the word 'photorealistic' used in a review of the first Rainbow Six. Physics have been around a lot longer, yes Havoc 2.0 is the current best but still, see above for relativity.

Changing the genre requires innovation, which HL2 lacked somewhat. This doesn't mean it's a bad game, I thought it was pretty good (the mapdesign and gameplay are better in Quake 4 though). HL2 didn't change the genre at all, just advanced it a little bit (which, to me, isn't 'changing' anymore seeing as everything evolves so fast nowadays).

Rollercoaster Tycoon rocks very very VERY hard :) I still play it to this day.

I didn't like 3, you had to put lights and stuff so you could see something at night, which kind of put me off, since it was still too dark. I'm probably acting conservative but I didn't like 3 at all.

Meik
26-10-2005, 06:44 PM
Yes, I own Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 but, like Dieter, I don't like it.

Sure, the graphics are nice, and the firework displays were a nice touch.. but it just lacks the fun, addictiveness and ease-of-use that the original had. I could go on and on for pages about all the little details that annoy me about it, but that's for another day.

RCT3: Soaked made it marginally better with the addition of (basic) tunnels and Loudspeakers (something that was always lacking in RCT1&2, but could be worked around by placing a small ride underground with music on).

I've still spent a fair bit of time on it because, even though the controls are niggly, end results certainly are impressive.

Here's a couple of pictures of (incomplete) projects:

Entrance Plaza:

I definitly agree with you there, some of the best games are also some of the most simple. I mean, in essence HL2 was pretty simplistic.

I know its not PC related but remember Burnout 2, it was the pinacle of the series, it was so simple, yet so diverse. Now BO4:Revenge is out, its needlessly complexed, the original idea of dodging traffic has totally gone.

EDIT - What game developers need to understand, is if it isnt broke, then why fix it?

Raining_again
26-10-2005, 07:08 PM
if they spent more time making a better plot/better gameplay than developing graphics, it would be a lot better. but then again its all about the money, most people go for a game cause it has "stunning graphics" or is more realistic.

Because console gamers demand revolution more, while pc gamers demand evolution more.

My favorite PC games in no particular order...

- Doom
- Duke Nukem 3D
- Day of the Tentacle
- Dune II: Battle for Arrakis
- Sam and Max Hit the Road
- Full Throttle
- X-Com - UFO Enemy Unknown
- Civilization I-IV
- No One Lives Forever 2
- Raptor: Call of the Shadows

Schpickles
09-11-2005, 04:26 PM
#1 Elite 2 (better on the Amiga)
#2 UFO - Enemy Unknown (aka XCom: UFO Defense)

Then you've got the Championship Manager series, Z, TA, Monkey Island... that sort of thing. It's been a hell of a long time since I've gotton excited about a PC game though... it's kind of stuck in a rut of not being able to innovate, and crippled by software piracy.

I loved Quake 3 and i still play it. In fact i just finished playing it 3 minutes ago. Freaky! I also love the Baldur's Gate series, brilliant. I love most of Bioware's games such as Neverwinter Nights etc... But Baldur's Gate 2: Shadow of Amn was my favorite.
I also really enjoyed Splinter Cell its soo good on PC, it should be illegal its just so good to play..
Warcraft 3 is another i have lost count how much i have played. And hmmm, Starcraft which i used to play online obsessively. It still is one of the best RTS games EVER!
I played a little World of Warcraft it was freakly good, but still as most RPG's, none come EVEN CLOSE to my beloved Ultima Online. It's so good to play, it's crude and it doesn't bubble wrap anything, and you can play it for free! Which i do, obviously because i wouldnt play official servers where americans got their way because they live and die by the game, well at one point anyway.
So yeah!
