I remember Flinky saying awhile back that we should start using the other console board more, kind of like what the Wii board is like with a topic for all the major games rather than crammed into the 360 Discussion.

Takeo and Daft have started it off well with 2 of the up and coming big games for the 360 so I thought I would set one up for the next big hit which arrives next week....The Darkness.

Discuss away!

I can't watch any previews of this game without getting "I believe in a thing called love" in my head. Looks like it could be a decent game if it doesn't become too generic in the second half.

If you want a dark story this will be it. I read the comics and love them, they really get into those little things that really make people evil.

Heres a review from 1up...

http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3160484

If you'd have guessed a few years ago that in 2007, Splinter Cell would feature a fugitive on the run out in the open, while the latest summer blockbuster action game would have players battling in shadows, you'd have been called some filthy names around these parts. It's not like the concept makes sense -- shadows are for hiding, not fighting. Right?

The Darkness -- developer Starbreeze's follow-up after making its name with The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay -- is a first-person shooter where you use the lack of light to your advantage. You play Jackie Estacado, who quickly earns the ability to generate semisentient tentacles from his back, Doc Ock-style. But to make this happen, you have to spend a few seconds in a dark area -- and you're going to want to do this a lot, because the tentacles give you some pretty amazing powers. They allow you to create black holes that suck in enemies and toss them around like they're in a giant blender, take out lights in a stabbing motion, sneak ahead and along walls like a snake to areas you can't reach on foot, pick up and toss around objects, and so on. On top of this, when you have the tentacles "on," you can absorb a lot more bullets than normal, so you're going to want to fill up your Darkness powers frequently.

It's this concept of creating shadows and moving into them to fill up your powers that determines the flow of the game. If you see a door up ahead, you're going to want to take out all the lights near the doorway to prepare. By the time you earn the black hole ability late in the game, you feel like a total badass walking into a room -- step inside, point at a group of enemies, and shoot the hole their way to watch them flail around helplessly. But once you use up all of your Darkness power, you have to wait and refuel in the shadows; even though there are plenty of chaotic scenarios, it never gets to the point where the game breaks. You can also use this power to spawn Darklings -- demonic critters that attack on your behalf -- from various points in the environment, so you can prepare a nice little team before entering some of the more challenging areas.

With this kind of setup, you may be expecting a full-on shooter, and while that description isn't terribly inaccurate, The Darkness features more downtime than you might expect. Moments like taking the time to sit on a couch and snuggle with your girlfriend and visiting your aunt remind me more of something like Indigo Prophecy than anything you normally see in shooters, and the open city requires you to spend a decent amount of time traveling through different parts of town using the subway system.

Like Riddick, the main story here won't take you long to get through (it's in the 10-hour range), but because of the game structure, you can spend time getting lost and messing around in the wrong parts of town if you choose. There's not a ton to do besides receiving "track this item down" missions from characters in subway stations and using your tentacles to pick up objects and mess with the game's physics -- this isn't the easiest thing to do if you're the type who likes to stack objects in piles and then use those to climb to secret areas, but it works and occasionally rewards you with bonus collectibles. But the feeling of running around town works pretty well, and you really get to know this version of New York by the end of the game.

The Darkness takes place in more than just New York, but to say more would be to spoil a decent amount of the story, so I'll stop there. Rest assured, the game has two basic locations, and they couldn't look or play out more differently from one another. You bounce between the two areas, leading up to an impressive finale.

The game has its share of minor flaws, though: progression issues (the quality of the boss fights is all over the place, and some areas of the city feel underused), an overall sense of awkwardness to the characters, and multiplayer that feels a bit loose. Also, characters talk with their hands, so instead of standing around when giving a speech, they provide lots of hand gestures. It's a nice idea that occasionally seems to work, but overall it just looks goofy -- especially since a lot of the time, these characters bounce from running around, firing their guns to standing 100 percent still and communicating with hand gestures.

The Starbreeze team inadvertently admits that multiplayer shouldn't be taken too seriously, as this mode relies on a gimmick: the ability to shapeshift from a human to a Darkling. As a Darkling, running up walls and jumping -- far -- feels amazing, and it's fun to be able to control these creatures directly, since you can't in single-player. But their clawing melee combat feels loose, and the humans aren't terribly interesting either, since they just feel like weak versions of what you get in the single-player game. For what it is, it's somewhat digestible fun, but it's nothing you should look to as the next big online console game.

Perhaps because I've already played a somewhat similar game in Riddick, The Darkness doesn't give off quite the same "this is amazing, and you absolutely must play it" vibe that Riddick did. But it also feels like a more polished game, and the base mechanics work extremely well by the time you reach the end of the single-player campaign. It doesn't quite have Riddick's pacing, due to the open city that asks you to find your own way through, but it presents a better feeling of accomplishment and familiarity by the end.

SCORE 9.0

Is anyone else having problems with the achivements? At one point i got past a save checkpoint, died a little further on and reloaded. When I got to just before where I died, it added another save point and a few achievements that it didn't give me before. I've also just got past the 2nd part of the game, and it hasn't given me an achievement for that either.

I can't remember where the exact room is, but it's behind one of the large shutters, before you get to the corridors leading outside. The door should be locked, and there's 2 goons inside. Take care of them, shoot out the light outside the room, then use your crawler to go through the small window and smash the lock from the other side. The money's in there. Oh, and there's a gasoline tank that you'll need in the small hut outside, next to that area. Hope that helps!

Mines been delivered so looking forward to having a go later and playing through it properly over the weekend.

Well played through a little of it and I do like it, but I'm so bad at FPS'. Got to the graveyard bit at the start and kept getting killed. The 3rd time I tried I got shot twice and it was game over. What's all that about?

I have just tried playing multiplayer on this and its pretty bad, very laggy.

Also, been playing some more of single player mode and its starting to get annoying having to go from train to train to get to progress the story. I agree with alot of the reviews, it isnt as well paced/setout as what Riddick was. Im still enjoying it though and I jumped a few times when I was in Hell due to the random pop ups from German soliders.

Are there many weapons, and how is this online?

Weapons wise there is duel handguns, duel uzis, shotgun, assault rifle and melee but its very rare I use them because once you get your Darkness powers you can implale enemies, send them into a vortex or just plain buther them along with ripping out their hearts and devoring them. You can also summon Darklings to do your killing either by mauling them, gunning them down, suicide bomber or electric attaks.

Online its pretty basic, you have capture the flag and the usual deathmatch modes. There is one cool feature though called Shapshifter when you can run around as a guy and then chage into a Darkling and run a hell of alot faster and then just maul your enemies before turning back into a human.

It really is one of the best 360 games that I have played in terms of single player adventure and it aint as short as many of the reviews said.

Don't worry about the number of weapons, this game rocks... : peace:
I love FPS's with some "meat" to it, be it adventure elements, RPG elements, ...
The Darkness is one of those games. And while I'm not really the kind of gamer that gets crazy about graphics (for me it's gameplay above all; I still enjoy playing games on my Spectrum 48k... well, except the loading part :D) this game looks awesome! God bless my HD TV...

There's more than four weapons, I'm sure of it.

"Works it out in head"

1, Pistols, these pistols all count as one, as the random pistols that appear in the game you randomly use them, so it's like revolvers, normal pistols and such. I think there is 3 types of them.

2, Shotgun

3, Uzi

4, Ak 47

5, Assault Rifle

6, Darkness Guns

7, Single Bolt Rifle

8, Auto Shotgun

Man the first achievement in the game is annoying to get. You have to kill around 5-7 workers while you are in the car right at the start of the game. The annoying thing is if you mess up you have to watch the whole starting again! I have yet to get it.....

As for the length of the game ThatGuy im not sure. I started playing when I got it on Thursday, probably took between 10-12 hours.

I would play it through on Hard. I beat it on Normal first and then Easy and neither of them was really challenging. If you play through on hard now then it will be easier as you know what to do and where to go. Thats he only thing I have left to do in terms of single player achievements.

The only bit I found slightly difficult was the graveyard bit right at the beginning. Once you've got you're darkness powers it was a piece of piss. Especially with the darkness guns and black whole power.

All good things come to those that wait.

Am i the only one finding this game really really hard on normal?

Yes, it has some hard parts, but they're really not that hard.

Shush.

I'm finding the game pretty easy now, just getting used to how the Darkness works took it's time. I've just entered hell, how far through the game am i?

Ah right quite a short game then, you know when you finish it and play again. Do you carry on with the stats from your previous game?

Kill counts and the like, yes, darkness powers, no.

Ah right so it's just as hard the second time around, no advantages?

Kill counts and the like, yes, darkness powers, no.

The achievement for being 'in tune with the darkness', do your stats for that get carried over? I got 100% in 3 of them.

From a different forum:

Stats that carry over are side quests, collectibles, (as long as you dialed the numbers or mailed the letters), and the % toward your darkness power kills as well as the darkness master achievement, same thing for the executions. Hearts eaten and your darkness level resets though.

Excellent. Think I'm gonna play though this again at the weekend.

You can also kill people, restart the checkpoint, kill them again and it will register all the kills if you want to get it over with.

But I'd play it through again on Normal to be honest, I'm up to the first "Hell" bit and it seems to get easier as you get more powerful.

Heres a quick achievement guide that I put together from other people on various boards and some of my own stuff. It isnt all of them just the ones that need some explaining/guides.

Cannibal:- Just eat 300 hearts in the game. Should be easy enough even without the sidequests

Fashionable:- Get all of the outfits in the game here are the locations.

Jungle Outfit: After you get past the first helicopter part (after you first meet butcher) go through the pool hall. After you exit the pool hall you should be in a place were there is a bum who asks for money and you can also ask him about dutch oven harry. Now there is a door on the LEFT wall, above it is a vent that you can send the creeping dark through. Go in there and you will see a hole in the vent. You can't miss the hole. Anyways go down into the room were there is a collectible and the jungle outfit known as the machete outfit.

Broken sword: Broken Sword one is in Chinatown. As soon as you get out of the subway. Walk straight up the stairs and continue straight. It's right there.

Fireman: Grinder's Lane in the 261 room where you kill the snitch.

Saw: Help the girl at the subway station (forget which one). She complains about being locked out of her apartment by her boyfriend. You go to her apartment and it's there (directions are given).

Sledgehammer: The last guy on Vinny's list. By Shrote's apartment entrance. The open window with the guy who's monitoring him. It's in there on the wall to the right.

Jackhammer: Going to City hall, in the abandoned subway car before you get to the Turkish baths.

Bringing People Together:- You have to get 5 people into a black hole. To do this the best thing is to wait til th efinal level and when you attack Paulies mansion throw a block hole near the doorway after you go up the steps. It may take a few times but just wait for enemies to gather around that area and then throw away.

Gunslinger:- You have to kill 7 enemies in 15 seconds. Just do it in the area that I mentioned above.

Darkness Master,Executioner,Rogue Killer,Void Bringer,Gunner,Ripper:- Just kill so many enemies using the different Darkness powers. All you have to do is do as Guyfromsparks described. Find an area with many enemies, kill them all using the way you want leave 1 to kill you and then reapeat.

Roadkill:- The most annoying achievement in the game. When you first start the game and get the cutscene where you are driving in the car, when you are able to shoot you have to kill around 6 workmen as you are driving. If you dont get it just reload the checkpoint again, but you have to watch the cutscene all over again. Another tip is to go into options and put the auto aim on the controls all the way up.

Romantic:- Easy as pie. When Jenny asks you tyo sit with her at the beginning of the game, do it! It takes a couple of mins but you get the achievement.

Ghandi:- When trying to get into Dutch Oven Harrys place ask the Tramp on the street for the password then go to the door and tell them it. Once inside put away all your weapons and then go talk to the guy whos on th ephone in the building. Once your achievement appears then feel free to unleash hell.

Anti Air:- Once you get the brif case in the Turkish Baths the SWAT team will attack you, you can hear the helicopter so just throw a Black Hole in the middle of the area ( you will see what I mean ) and you bring the helicopter down and get the achievement.

Take a Look at the Sky:- When you go back to Hell you will be on the gun of a Tank, just shoot down 6 planes that attack you, do it before you crash and if you dont get it then just restart the checkpoint.

Heart of Gold:- For this you need to do all of the sidequest in the game.

Note: Do not kill the bum in Trinity Cemetery, he has a side quest in Chapter5

Chapter 1

1. George Hadel, on the stairs that exit to Chinatown – Wants his Harmonica back, go back in to the station and turn right, talk to Compton Scarr. Go back to George and he will sing to you, and u will complete this side quest.

2. Ingrid Pulanski, Fulton St – She lost her bracelet, it’s pretty close to where she is stood, on her side of the track under the platform.

3. Charlene Warburton, Fulton St – Dares you to pick up 4 coins from the track, pretty easy, get on to the track before she throws and just run around like a n00b tapping A.

Chapter 3 (after H3ll Pt.1)

4. Jimmy the Grape, Canal St – After u get back from H3ll, walk over to Jimmy to get your next objective, then talk to him again and he will give you a side quest, go to Grinders Lane and look for an open apartment block (next to a yellow cab/car), and locate Room 261. Once u’ve kill the snitch, go back to Jimmy.

5. Terence Willis, Canal St – Go to Lower East Side Whitefish pool hall and kill the 5 member gang, then go back and talk to him, he will also give you a hint as to beat the Cup & Ball game.

6. Lucas Hillinger, Canal St – After getting the hint off Willis, go round the corner, talk to Lucas and select Distract Him, then Accept the game, the ball should be put under the now marked cup, then select middle.

7. Dana Cutrone, Canal St – She wants you to get her keys from her boyfriend in Chinatown, near Jenny’s apartment, afterwards go back and give her the key.

8. George Hadel, Canal St – Scarr stole his harmonica, go and retrieve it from him at Lower East Side near the entrance to Pier 19.

9. Mitch Deval, Fulton St – He is trying to find his brother, you kill him when your in City Hall, when u get back from getting the brief case, talk to him to finish his quest.

10. Vinny Mortarello, Fulton St – Gives you hits to do:

a. A thug stalking Aunt Sarah Lower East Side
b. Kill the goon on Grinders Lane near the meat packers
c. Leader of a gang, near Aunt Sarah’s in Lower East Side
d. Drug dealer in Chinatown near the station exit
e. Guy watching Shrote at Gun Hill, as your looking at Shrotes apartment, but still in the alleyway, turn right and look at the 2nd floor window, it’s a open window near an extractor unit, Creeping Dark will do the trick.

Chapter 4 (H3ll Pt.2)

11. Charlie Hazelgrove – At the end of a tunnel from the village, just before u go up a ladder to the tank ride with Anthony. He will give you a msg and a locket to give to his wife in Fulton St. She is close to where Vinny was hunched up.

Chapter 5 (You wake up in front of the Orphanage)

12. Little Petey Terrone – Wants you to deliver a message to a guy wearing a red hat in Canal St. near the Chinatown exit, stood in front of a vending machine.

13. Alfred Blackmoore – Landlord for the girl u helped earlier, he is standing very close to the exit in to Chinatown, in a white jumper with the number 10 on it. Get his keys back and go speak to him to complete it (the apartment u kicked that guy out of).

14. Enzo Scardina, Canal St – As your going to Trinity Cemetery he is in the hallway just before the ticket desk. He wants you to take a suitcase to Fulton St and switch it with another, the guy is stood near a information point.

15. Frank Rottenberg, Trinity Cemetery – He is the bum from the toilets at the beginning of the game. He needs his medicine from the toilets, u can either find a way to jump over the wall, or use Creeping Dark…its on the corner of the table, opposite the urinals.

I think thats all of the hard achievemnets apart from the collector ones.

Enjoy.
