Going beyond "run and gun corridors," "monster-closet AIs" and static worlds, BioShock creates a living, unique and unpredictable FPS experience. After your plane crashes into icy uncharted waters, you discover a rusted bathysphere and descend into Rapture, a city hidden beneath the sea. Constructed as an idealistic society for a hand picked group of scientists, artists and industrialists, the idealism is no more. Now the city is littered with corpses, wildly powerful guardians roam the corridors as little girls loot the dead, and genetically mutated citizens ambush you at every turn.

Take control of your world by hacking mechanical devices, commandeering security turrets and crafting unique items critical to your very survival. Upgrade your weapons with ionic gels, explosives and toxins to customize them to the enemy and environment. Genetically modify your body through dozens of Plasmid Stations scattered throughout the city, empowering you with fantastic and often grotesque abilities. Explore a living world powered by Ecological A.I., where the inhabitants have interesting and consequential relationships with one another that impact your gameplay experience. Experience truly next generation graphics that vividly illustrate the forlorn art deco city, highlighted by the most detailed and realistic water effects ever developed in a video game.

Make meaningful choices and mature decisions, ultimately culminating in the grand question: do you exploit the innocent survivors of Rapture...or save them?

I've been following this game since E3 last year, and i'm glad to say it's just got a European Launch Date. Perfectly situated before Halo 3 in the midst of August (the 24th to be precise).

This game looks to be the one of the best on the 360, a unique world so heavily detailed and rich in character, gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous graphics and mind blowing water effects in addition to extremely smart AI, no real linearity, a game where if you die and restart the enemies don't do what the did last time, or come from where they did.

The twisted little sisters just really do it for me, sucking Adam out of corpses and it's upto you whether you want to take on her big daddy and kill her for the massive amount of Adam she has, or let your paternal/maternal side win and leave her to run off.

While looking very tense and quite scary the gameplay looks to be the best of any FPS adventure type game. Easily eclipsing Preys annoying native american theme and portal gimick.

I for one cannot wait to get this game! Anybody with me?]

I've been following this game for a very long time, I really can't wait for this! Plus it's by the makers of System Shock 2, one of my all time favorite games and, imo, one of the scariest ever. This is easily my most anticipated game of this year (along with Crysis). I really hope that the limited edition makes it over here. I'm deffo picking up the PC version too, as it's one of the reasons why I upgraded.

Its a modern day, underwater version of System Shock.
In System Shock, you used electrical inplants to change your abilities, in Bioshock, you use crude biological weapons, straight into your body. Such as injecting yourself with flies, then using them against your enemy.

Sounds crazy, but it mixes things up.

Sounds really promising but my notebook won't have the power to deal with it properly I guess.

Pentium-M 2GHz, 1GB Ram, GF 6800Go 256MB Ram are simply not enough - but it will take a few years until I get a new machine :)

I guess it gets time for a second console...

"Game of the Year. Game of the Year. La la la la la."

That is the song I shall sing when this game hits. Super hyped now. I trust PCGamer a lot, I had a free sub a while ago and the writers now what thoer talking about.

That 95 isn't a ONM 95 (aka a 70) that is 120 on ONM scale. In other words pretty damn sweet.

Better than HL2. I can't see it but I would love to be proven wrong.

It's art style is like gothic-y art deco that's been left to rot and mutate for 50 years.

FUCKING LOVE IT!!!

Gameplay looks awesome as well. Anyone who says it's 'just a shooter' is talking out of their arse. Watch the gameplay vids on gametrailers. Plus resources are fairly limited, meaning you actually have to use your brain unlike say Halo or Gears, where it's a shooting gallery.

On the other hand, I could not buy it, and use the money to get another game that comes out once my LoveFilm trial is over, or towards my TV. God damnit.

Do you guys think it would be worth buying this rather than renting, or will I be able to get the max from this with just a rental?

Better! You get an embossed steel one, kinda similar to the PDZ collectors ed minus the plastic sleeve.

Well it's in the pic on the gameplay site so i assume so yes, only way of fitting it all in. Very similar to the LOTR extended edition boxsets.

OH.

MY.

WORD.

This could very well be the best game i have ever played. Plasmids <3 Guns <3 Big Daddies <3 creepy fucked up splicers <3

The sound effects are so god damn amazing, as is every aspect of design i've saw in the demo. Seriously gorgeous, intro has some amazing set pieces, i imagine after they've done introducing you to the game you can roam pretty freely. Love the audio logs, love the voice acting.

HATE HATE HATE that it's not out for a few more weeks, but really glad i'm getting the limited edition.

I can't see Halo 3 topping this in terms of experiences and immersion, nor any other 360 game this year.

I'd just like to say that the Irish accent of the "guide" fellow is awesome.

The whole thing is just so breath taking. It looks gorgeous, and the sound is spot on. My favourite moment is the women huddled over the cradle, you hear her and then see the shadow. Creep up to her and she turns round and attacks you, after she died I smacked her in the head with the wrench, and it went even more bloody and disfigured <3

I found the demo slightly scary when you first go into the lighthouse, as I expected the lights to go on and there to be some...thing...

Instead the whole thing is creepy, which is rather cool. It makes you want to know what has happened.

I didnt know what to expect going into the Bioshock demo at all. What can I say? It is fuckin incredible. Atmospheric, amazing iconography, interesting characters, great gameplay system, awesome graphics. Definetly can see why it is being tipped game of the year and I will be buying.

It is like Condemned on crack.

P.S. The hacking section was very confusing. TBH I didnt have a clue how to do it even after reading the instructions, did you guys do it ok?

Gizmo
14-08-2007, 02:51 PM
The hacking was awesome. You had to uncover the tiles, then swap the pipe pieces and get the liquid to the other exit before it spilled.

Is there anyway to stop more guys coming though? I died after about 6 of them came in a row, and decided that was a good place to stop playing the demo. More surprises for the real thing right? Though I did misso ut on playing with the fire plasmid.

The sights on firearms are a little hard to use (turns too slow), but other than that the combat is awesome. Getting a security bot and the gun turret in the toilets (the second lot) on your side then leading the splicers in is really fun!

Also, is it just me, or is the fire plasmid almost completely useless in the demo? The Electro Volt is much handier, for stun-wack combos on splicers and for allowing you to hack.

Off topic but I like to learn to new words. What does iconography mean? Or inconoclast.

I know I could look it up in a dictionary or something but that is dull.

First try I shorted the bot but on my second run I was quite the pipemania pro. You have to keep revealing and swapping quickly to make a path, its speed not mistakes.

Going to play the demo a third time soon. I play demos too much. I have already played the Katamari demo 3 times (9mins) and the Stranglehold demo at least 6 times.

Iconography mate is like when certain objects have secondary meanings. So like in a horror film if the lighting was red it could represent death is coming or a rose represents love.

Game had loads of forms of it. I also loved the 60's artwork and the scene with the mother pushing the pram. I really thought it was the irish guys family and went towards them to help, and the bitch turned around trying to kill me lol.

Game was just awesome, the attention to detail was class

Yeah I worked it out first go, it's a simple pipe game really. Every tile on the board has a pipe piece under it, the objective is to create a drain from the start to the finish (duh) which were marked by light blue arrow things. When you find a tile you want you press A to swap it with the current one you're "holding" and then A again when you find the tile you want to place it. What I wasn't sure on was how to hack. The first time I electro shocked it down and then it gave me the option to hack but afterwards I couldn't hack any more, am I only allowed one robot friend?

If its where I think it is, then we had the same problem, it was right at the end with one of those "Regenerator" things that you spawn in and a couple of entrances, and they stream in about 2-3 or a time for a while. I died a couple of times there before they stopped coming.

Or are you talking about the room with fire and a red tinge with the robots and the people that kept on coming?

If you mean iconoclast its someone who hates icons it is used to describe the split between iconoclasts and iconophiles in the Byzantine Empire. Iconophiles loves icons and thought they were ok in the eyes of god.

Tried playing the demo this afternoon and then it crashed on me so I deleted it.

Those wanting to play on the Hard setting in the demo then check this out.

Before starting the demo, go to your gamer profile in the dashboard and then change your default game settings. Go to general, then change your difficulty to hard.
Now when you start the demo, hard should be highlighted when you have the option to select your difficulty. Don't move the cursor or you will not be able to select hard again, unless you go back (B).

And then when he came up to the stairs.. wow.. talk about nice textures.. then the entering into rapture.. the running WATER effects.. Damn. Just a warning there is a slight spoiler in the paragraph starting:

So just give it a miss and its a good read...except the last sentence which is just stupid.

Played through the demo and can't really see what all the fuss is about, seemed pretty meh. Looked well done but was just another samey linear FPS set in the same kind of post-apocalyptic environment we've seen thousands of times before, albeit this time underwater. I don't understand why this is being considered some kind of revolution, we've had magical powers at our fingertips as an alternative to firepower in plenty of FPS's, and as far as I can tell the weapon progression is identical to every other FPS under the sun (Crowbar>Pistol>Machine Gun>Rocket Launcher>Sniper>Experimental/Alien Weapon)

Same with the enemies, creepy schoolgirls were done in F.E.A.R, Prey and Silent Hill, and the crazed mutant humans are the staple food of 99% of games out there.

Like I say, it looks polished but I don't see why people are frothing at the mouth over it as if it's some kind of new level in gaming when it's just another FPS.

Thought the story was great! But the gameplay felt a bit meh to me. Seen better in the form of Condemned for the melee and oblivion for the magic, and Deus Ex for the interactivity. But it was just a demo after all, I probably will buy the game, it just isn't my most wanted game and am happy to say my main games now will be Halo 3, Rock Band (if it actually makes it this side of christmas) and Guitar Hero 3, also with some various Wii games. The demo is shallow compared to what everyone has said about the AI and it's quite a small demo area wise imo. But the game is like 15 hours+ long so there's a gajilion over things in the actual game.

But what about Wii games!!!

Sequels almost never get as much praise and attention as the first games in the series unless they really shake things up. So i'd say that Gears of War 2 will be solid, but not as great as the first game, MP3, Mario Galaxy and SSBM all look awesome but they're just sequels, adding some good new things into the mix but not really a big leap like say 2D->3D, or FFX -> FF XII. There are always exceptions like Half-Life 2, but journos love new fresh things cos they play games 24/7 almost.

*runs off to read some reviews hoping for no spoilers*

IGN There is art here, despite what many would say isn't possible with games, from Roger Ebert to game designers like Hideo Kojima...BioShock stands as a monolithic example of the convergence of entertaining gameplay and an irresistibly sinister, engrossing storyline that encompasses a host of multifaceted characters. This is an essential gaming experience. 9.7/10

EuroGamer BioShock is the ultimate rarity: not only does it live up to its lofty promise, but exceeds it through simple, old fashioned talent and imagination - not to mention verve, style, class, wit, and sheer bloody-minded ambition. It takes the tired, worn-out FPS genre by the scruff of the neck, reinvents and bend it out of shape in such a breathtaking fashion that it's going to take something very special to top this in the months and years ahead. 10/10

GamePro What if a game's narrative was as intricate and as immersive as its graphics? What if as much attention went into dialogue and atmosphere as went into pixel shaders and high-resolution textures? What then? Ladies and gentlemen, the answer is BioShock, one of the most playable, thought-provoking, and just downright impressive games to emerge on a home console since, well, ever. 10/10

OXM UK Amazingly written and beautifully constructed, it's a complete emotional rollercoaster which we can't drawn any parallels with...You'll be playing this game for months to come, exchanging story elements to build up the bigger picture, and arguing about what it all means. [Sept 2007, p.88] 10/10

Game Informer It’s ingenious, enthralling, and a masterpiece of the most epic proportions. So without further delay, would you kindly enter Rapture so that you too can experience the best that video games have to offer? 10/10

Its clearly an amazing game due to the high level of praise its recieving its just I dont really feel anything for it. Its probably due to its art/design as I always prefer colourful/jolly games rather than dark ones. This is probably why I have been such a fan of Nintendos work all these years.

I'm usually the same. But i love the dark humour of the art style, and the characters and the speech. This is probably i'm not turned off by Bioshock as i may have been on paper. Metroid Prime even turned me off a bit on my first attempt of playing it because i found it too dull and empty, so i played Zelda and Mario instead. But having gone back i can play it now and love it. Maybe it's an age thing for me.

The old this game isn't perfect so how can it get a "perfect" 10 arguement. We've been through it a milllion times the game dosn't have to be "perfect" to get a 10, the reviewer just thinks it is of the extreme quality.

I don't view 10/10 scores as "perfect" but as a significant and genre-defining game that must be played near it's release date to fully appreciate it.
Whist Bioshock isn't doing anything particularly new, it's the combination of everything that's good about FPSs and Single Player games into one game that make it a 10/10

It's not perfect, they don't say it's perfect. Scores are a stupid thing which are just used to show how good a game is at a glance. If you read the reviews they all talk about the good things and the bad things, that is what a review is after all. If a games positives vastly, vastly outweigh its negatives then it deserves a high score, and in some cases 10/10.

In the spoiler free 1up review the reviewer does mention a few small deficits in the immersion of the game, and Gears got 10/10 from 1up as well, showing that it is a game of extreme quality, which delivers on pretty much everything that it promised to.

Game scores aren't a science, there's no stupid formula or machine that you can run a game through to give a 'final score'. So instead of looking at the game, and then the score and saying, 'how the hell did it deserve that, it's not perfect', read the actual reviews to understand why it got the score it did.

But if you read publications score guidelines they will only use the word 'perfect' as a negatory. For instance we have Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/scoring_policy.php) that says, "Let us make absolutely clear that a 10 is not and probably never will be 'the perfect game'. There's always something criticisable about a game, however small." And IGN (http://uk.games.ign.com/ratings.html) state, "No game is absolutely perfect, but 10s represent the pinnacle of gaming brilliance."

Perhaps if you gave a game 10/10 you would be saying that it is perfect, but game publications do not use your scale, they have their own. To draw in your own meaning is to warp their message.

I was expecting this to be quality, i really was. But its average IMO.

The same can be said of any game. Gears of War has plenty of muddy textures here and there if you care to look, they are simply not as noticeable as in some other games due to the third-person perspective.

BioShock is easily one of the astounding games I've ever seen, and by that I'm not talking about texture compression: Rapture is a fantastically realised environment, chock full of incidental detail and craftmanship. Epic harped on about 'Destroyed Beauty' for so long, but I actually think BioShock is far more deserving of the title as it truly is an explorable snapshot of broken dreams.

I'm not trying to force you to like the game, but I do want you to appreciate it.

Well i dont like FPS, plus i just dont think its as great as everyone is saying, like ive said before, i think the textures are poor on the environments (except the water) and because its dark, people dont notice it.

Correct, it is a demo.

How can you sit there and tell me i cant pass judgement on this game from the demo, when you are doing exactly the same thing by saying you love it. How can you completley agree with a review and totally love this game from the opening 30 mins of a game?! Same applies. I played the demo and hated it, you played it and loved it. Im happy for you.

In my book, its screwed up to give something 10/10, and then say "but its not perfect, its really a 9.8764657 but what the hey!"

Bioshock has actually been slightly 'downgraded' for its console release.
The PC version (the one i'll be picking up, due to it being cheaper) has far higher res textures, more particle, lighting and shadow effects as well as Direct X 10 support on Vista.

Anyone noticed the really weirdly clunky death animations of your enemies? I found that just... plain weird. Not a complaint, just weird.

It only appears to happen when you're right infront of your enemy. Which is the dodgy thing, usually if theres less animation detail its because of an enemy being far away, GRAW style.

But you could be right about it being an animation to physics transition.

I've tried it and it's far more challenging. Though I'll still go for normal mode, just for my first run through.

For those that don't know how to unlock hard mode in the demo, do this:

Go into your profile > Game Defaults > General and set difficulty to "hard". Once in the game go through the menus as normal, but don't move the analogue stick in the difficulty selection. If you do, then you can go back down to select hard mode, but you can press the back button to go back and select it again. Press A and you get hard mode! ^^

Also, I'm not happy. I've just realised that I'm working 11-8 on Thursday and 11-7:30 on Friday, so I won't have much time to play this till Saturday. Grrr. ><

I just had a random thought... how the hell are gameplay actually going to get this to me? I've selected first class postage for the limited edition (with the Big Daddy figurine ), but the box would be too big to post by hand. So will they send it by courier, post van or what?

In America, the CE game box is a standard plastic box, the soundtrack only has 3 tracks and the box isn't embossed. There's a ton of fans moaning about this... I just think it's stupid. The big Daddy Figurine is worth it imo, plus as long as the game's in it, does it really matter? However, I've heard that outside America, the CE has a steel book case, so we'll be getting it, and it's all good. ^^

Yep, at worst we'll all bitch and moan about them falsely selling the item as it says on the website, it just better not come all bashed up. . . *prays*

Does anyone know if Bioshock on 360 will be region free? The parental unit is going to NY at the end of the month and I've asked them to try and get it for me. Is this a good idea?

I just saw a picture of the Big Daddy figurine and I almost regretted buying the regular edition from Play with the faceplate - that faceplate better be damn cool! :D

I wonder how much those figurines will go for on eBay...

Kotaku were reporting the other day that the faceplates are hot property at the moment so you will no doubt get more for that than you would for the figure.

You mean this (http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2007/08/17/rare-bioshock-faceplates-bring-in-a-high-price-on-ebay)?

I don't think thats the same faceplate as the one packaged in with Play.

Infact, nope, they aren't :(

Anyone else down for the limited edition at gameplay? They've just dropped the price by a tenner to £39.99, this better be reflected on my bank statement bitches!!!

edit:Lies! i think i was looking at the PC special ed. Where has the 360 Limited Edition gone from Gameplays site? *worried face*

TBH £50 or under isnt bad for:

* Bioshock Limited Edition Faceplate numbered #**** out of 5100
* Bioshock Lanyard (green with white lettering)
* Promotional Bioshock Box
* Promotional Bioshock "Welcome to Rapture" Foldout

especially compared to what the E3 gears of war faceplates were going for

Shopto is excellent. Good prices, fast delivery.

Everytime I have used them I have got the game the next day after ordering.

I have not, however pre-ordered with them before, but I imagine, at the very worst, you would get the game on release day.

Yeah I noticed when looking at my order. I'd guess it's either out of stock if it's really limited, or just a mistake.

Limited, since the companies selling this edition have stopped preorders in the past couple of days. I should imagine it's just a result of having the number of preorders meet the number of the LEs they're getting.

Anyone's LE order of Bioshock been processed at gameplay.co.uk? Mine still says "ordered", and I've heard some people's orders have been processed. I hope mine will processed, as I only have 12 quid in the bank. Although I do have a 100 pound overdraft agreement, so it should all be ok... right?

When y'all say LE you mean the one with the Big Daddy Figurine? It's getting confusing with all of them.

My order is still ordered at gameplay also. I always get the email it's been sent after I recieve the game anyway so I'm not doubting I won't get it.

Cancelled that. Got me a pre-order on the one with the figurine at game.co.uk. Hopefully I got one.

Yeah, I've got the same too, it's worrying isn't it? I think I'll give gameplay a call tomorrow morning, just to be sure my order's definitely placed. Mind you, they still have it up for sale, and surely they have their stock in by now...

I'll be really pissed off if I don't get the LE too, I've waited 3 years for this game!! :(

I think Fileplanet had it exclusive, but everywhere else seems to have it now. Those links have just gone up within the last hr, so speeds may be sluggish. It's also on a few torrent sites as well, but from what I was getting there, speeds are even more slower.

Hope that helps mate.
