Looks like Ben Haim is going to join Steve Sidwell on the bench at Chelsea. Says it's not for money, but for footballing reasons due to the draw of the champions league. Sorry like, but I doubt he's gonna be starting many champions league games unless there's serious injury problems involving Terry, Carvalho and (potentially) Alex.

yeah he is gonna make a mistake. at least Sidwell will get some games during African Nations but that won't happen with Ben Haim.
EDIT:
Awful first weeks for pompey, play all of the top 4:
August
11 Derby (A)
14 Man Utd (H)
18 Bolton (H)
25 Chelsea (A)
September
1 Arsenal (A)
15 Liverpool (H)
But then again last season we drew twice with Arsenal, drew and beat Liverpool and beat Man Utd so we could pick up something especially from the home matches.

Not too bad for the first few games for Leeds, including our first ever appearance in the first round of the Carling Cup
Funny how we're playing 2 of the others relegated with us in the first few weeks, including meeting our former manager at Luton. Tis strange how there is always a nice juicy fixture somewhere for someone! (á la Bolton/Newcastle!)
Also anyone recognise that name Nottingham Forest? Hell, tis a looooong time since I saw them play! Former European Champions! Twice I believe :p
'tis gonna be a strange season! I haven't a clue about any of the teams in League 1 except the ones we were relegated with!

It may just be me being retarded by why don't those fixtures on the Sky Sports website have a Yeovil Town vs. Leeds United fixture at Huish Park (Yeovil's ground)? I've found the match at Elland Road which is on October 6th but there doesn't seem to be a return match?!

Wow alot of Liverpool Fans sure seem to be confident, that they will win the title this year.
Number 26 ;)
1) Thierry Henry is off to Barcelona.
2) You keep checking the internet to see if you've signed someone. You just did it now.
3) And again.
4) The Gossip column is twice as long as normal.
5) Thierry Henry is off to Real Madrid now.
6) Man Utd release a new kit.
7) Football pundits find themselves shoehorned into covering other sports.
8) As do football journalists. Quick, look busy.
9) Someone English is cheered all the way to the fourth round of Wimbledon from Henman Hill or Murray Mount or somewhere.
10) Actually, Andrew Murray's Scottish, isn't he? Let's not cheer for him.
11) Sue Barker sits there and tells you it's a "Great British summer of sport".
12) You end up knowing the names of half the footballers' agents in the Premier League.
13) Old pros are forced to play football as satellite TV desperately scrabbles around for material.
14) Spurs target a top-four finish.
15) Your skin has gone a funny lobster colour and hurts.
16) Golf seems interesting.
17) Everyone gets excited waiting for the fixture list. Ooh, we play every team twice! Once home and once away! I can't wait!
18) You actually start to miss Alan Hansen.
19) Cricket is the new football. So we're told.
20) You try to convince yourself that the awful player linked with your club has just been misunderstood in the past.
21) And as for those players you've never heard of, well, best check their stats on Football Manager. That'll work.
22) You start to fancy Clare Balding.
23) Sky Sports News is even duller than normal.
24) Fernando Torres is linked with a move to the Premiership. (Note: In previous years, this role was regularly filled by Benni McCarthy).
25) You tell yourself staying up all night to watch the Copa America and MLS is normal.
26) It's Liverpool's year.
27) You suddenly realise you've got a wife and kids and that you haven't spoken to them for nine months. And they hate you.
28) You contemplate seeing if you can find your old Subbuteo set in the loft.
29) You persuade your family this year's holiday should be in Norway just so you can watch live football. Brann are top, you know, and Odd Grenland have only won once. Fascinating.
30) You persuade yourself the Intertoto Cup is really great.
31) You start craving cold lager at 10am every day.
32) You get so desperate that you start watching Eurosport 2 in the hope some football comes on.
33) You find yourself travelling 100 miles on a bus to watch the youth team's reserves playing a pre-season friendly.
34) You realise it's 3pm on a Saturday afternoon and you're holding your missus' bags in Top Shop. And even though she's trying to talk to you, all you're thinking is 'Ooh, I remember when Top Man used to sponsor Leeds'.
35) You love being top four or hate being in the relegation zone. Even though the league is entirely alphabetical.
36) You breathe a sigh of relief when you realise pre-season friendlies start in the first week of July. Because watching your out-of-shape side play Stevenage is just great, isn't it?
37) Newcastle sign 15 players. Only one of them is a defender.
38) You start to work out how many players it would take for your side to break into the Big Four. Then you think how great it would be if you somehow won your first ten games and managed to stay ahead of the rest and be in with a shout of the league.
39) You convince yourself it's worth sticking a quid on it at 2500/1 odds. 50p, at least.
40) You put the other 50p on Man Utd getting relegated at 7500/1. Anything's possible, right?

The stupid thing is that we Liverpool fans are usually right, it should be our year after the strong finishes we tend to have in the Premiership (although this year was a weird one with all the weak teams we put out.
Its just that we tend to get such crappy starts to seasons and every year we figure it will be different. I mean considering how bad the start to the season was last year we still did well so if we can be more consistant throughout we'll be right up there.
Have liverpool even brought anyone this year?

When I look at the Liverpool squad, I see signs of quality with the likes of Gerrard, Carragher, Mascherano, but I don't see enough depth. I think one think you are lacking is a good winger, and somebody who can put the ball into the box. With a striker built like Crouch, this is one area where you are missing a trick. Put balls into the box and the goals will come.
Looking at your squad, I think maybe the squad does rely too heavily on Gerrard and Carragher. They're the heart of the team. I just want to see other players step their game up when Gerrard isn't playing too well, and I don't think we see enough of that.
Another thing, consistency. If Liverpool played like every game was a Cup Final, you'd have the treble. Thing is, occassionally you'll give an amazing performance, and then next week you'll fall to pieces. It's a case of "which Liverpool team will we get this week?"

Liverpool dont have a chance in hell of winning the league, unless they sign a top quality striker, at least 1 pacy winger (you lack this completely) and a left back. Im sorry, but Riise has been ass defensively this season, good player - not a great defender.

I'm hoping the Villa will finish closer to the top 6 this season. O'Neill has now had his bedding-in season as we started to see the fruits of his labours towards the end of the season. Hopefully with some good buys, we can start climbing that table towards Europe.

I'm bored of the two horse title races that the Premiership has seen for a decade or so. I would like to see Liverpool challenging, I would love to see Arsenal's Young guns being the suprise package and Spurs up there too - Obviously, as long as we win it still :D
My point is, it would be classy if the Premiership did a La Liga as far as the race for the title was concerned and had more then 2 teams challenging. Then there really would be no arguments to it being the best league in the world.
I dont trust Benitez, He is an awesome manager no doubt and in europe knows his tactics perfectly. However, im not convinced with his signings since he has been with you - for every decent player, theres been a complete shocker.
Whether he can bring in "top class" talent is very much up for debate and that is regardless of the size of his budget.

PEPE REINA - Solid, will only ever be world class on pens
PETER CROUCH - Good Squad Player
DANIEL AGGER - Potential
Mascerano - Great Signing
On The Fence:
Pennant - Squad player, but not the signing of a "title contender"
MOMO SISSOKO - Solid, But does he have a future there?
Kuyt - Needs a goal machine as a partner, Or he's sorta useless. I still laugh at when 89% of liverpool fans were calling him the "Next Ruud"
LUIS GARCIA - Justified in Europe, but too injury prone
SCOTT CARSON - Why is he on loan? You're lot retarded?

Good post mate. I would love the premiership to be more open too but I can't see that happening. But in saying that, I think the gap between the top teams and the "lower" ones are getting smaller.
Agreed about Benitez comment too. Liverpool keep buying players who are a bit "iffy".
united to sign Quagulaire (sp?) for around 8-10 million? amaizing talent, pitty rossi wont get more chances next year either.
http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,16368,1778_2360348,00.html
PS, iv been hearing liverpool fan say "watch us next season" for the past 11 season (since FA cup loss to united). all we seen was them fail mysrably(sp?). you cant win with players like arrullio, crouch (i thing hes as shit as it gets), bellamy, kout (hard work alone gets you no where), fowler (was good 7 years ago), pennant (not good enough for top flight), xabi alonso (excellent passer and hard worker but nothing That special), luis garcier (versitile player but so is K. richardson), Gonzales (no results found), zenden (was good in 2002), sissoko (great tackler and dedicated hard worker, admire his determination, love to laf at his passing).
PSS, you also need 2 seasons before team gels together and play good, look at united for past 3 season. arsenal are going through that stage now.
ill be waiting till 2010 before you can fight for title unless you do a chelsea and grab eto, torres, silva, kaka and robben then thats ok.
PSSS, you also lack a playmeker, gerrard cant do everything!

I love the fact you have clased 5 under 19s as shit because they didnt break into the first team straight away. Barragan is actualy pretty decent and Liverpool can buy him back from Deportivo at any time for the fee they got for him, so its a loan deal basicaly. Also labeling Aurelio as shit in his first season in the premiership when he was injured for more than half of it :D
FOREIGN PLAYER TAKING TIME TO SETTLE INTO THE PREMIERSHIP SHOCKER
I take it if Nani is not as good as Ronaldo within his first 5 games you will be labeling him as Utter shit.
Another thing to point out Bellamy aside none of those players cost more than a ocuple of million I.e they;re squad players/ youth teamers.

Nope, I will be patient and wait for Nani to progress through out this season... If things dont happen instantly, then thats the way it is. But i know he has the potential to become awesome. TBH, i still think Giggs should get on the teamsheet before Nani - we need to bring him in gradually, like we did with Ronaldo.

The two clubs had agreed a fee for the 23-year-old England international, who has top scored for Charlton for the past two Premiership campaigns.
But after negotiations with the Hammers, the striker has rejected a switch to Upton Park and the chance to be reunited with the man who brought him to The Valley in August 2004, current Hammers boss Alan Curbishley.
Charlton chief executive Peter Varney said: "We set a valuation for Darren and West Ham were the only club prepared to meet that valuation.
"This morning we gave them permission to speak to Darren, which he did, and he has decided not to join West Ham.
"We therefore look forward to Darren starting with us in the Championship next season, which is a massive boost to our chance of returning to the Premier League.”
Bit of a shock that one. Still think he'll be off before the end of the summer despite what Charlton say.

Yeh I wouldn't be surprised if Bent does leave but for around the £17 million mark? I think that is far too much.
Actually.....he is English so I guess thats about right ;)
i think bent will go to liverpool, then they can win the league :p
his price range is stupidly high, around 17million, proving my point about over priced british player. I hate reality!

Tbf Charlton want 17 million because 25% of any fee goes to Ipswich. Which means they value him at about 12 million which is about right given the ammount of goals hes scored for them and his age.

PSS, you also need 2 seasons before team gels together and play good, look at united for past 3 season. arsenal are going through that stage now.
Agreed. Us gooners are going through this patch where players need to gel together. We've had great teams in the past years and as our team has changed so much over the years through players leaving and new ones coming in, its natural for a team to take time to develop.

darren bent should stay at charlton.
they are clearly coming straight back up and he would score a million goals which would be amazing for his confidence.
nobody should buy him for £17 million.

Spurs would be fools to spend all that on Bent when Defoe is every bit as good, if not better.
You put Defoe at a club like Charlton, where the club relies on his goal's and he starts every fixture - his goal record would be just as good...
Martin Jol is getting a bit too greedy by the looks of it.

in the world.
How can you not trust a manger who got a totally mediocre side to the Champions League Final in a team he inherited.
Benitez hasn't had money coming out of his arsehole unlike your Fergies and Mourinho, the fact is Benitez has done a hell of a job with the money provided.
It took Fergie years to get his team together on a limited amount of money, Benitez needs time and he needs money. He has time and he will now have the money. Reserve judgement until then.
Benitez will win Liverpool the league within the next few seasons, as I said in a previous post until Rick Parry goes the club will never ever take that major step forward.
Also you are clueless as to the reasoning behind the players signings, examples
AURELIO - Shit?, He wasn't shit he was settling into the English game and got injured during the time when he was playing the best football
JAN KROMKAMP - Far from, bought as a squad player couldn't settle in, not because he was shit, he just didn't like it.
ANTONIO BARRAGAN - Utter shit? You have never seen him play
JACK HOBBS - Bought for the future
DAVID MARTIN - Never going to be used, I like how you can predict the future, how do you do that?
MARK GONZALEZ - Out for at least 2/3's of the season, Never got off on the right foot
ROBBIE FOWLER - Was bought because we had a striker crisis and he solved it
GABRIEL PALETTA - No he isn't utter shit he has been good when he has played
Benitez has done ALOT on a limited budget and will win us the league when the money roles in.
Anyway let us not forget the players you call utter shit have made the Champions League Final 2 times in 3 years.
Seriously now, how many times did you see the 'utter shit' Barragan play?

Well a few different and random observations about next season from me:
Think Pompey missed a massive chance to get into Europe this season. I think we will still be top half but not as close to Europe as last time, next season I feel with all the money that's flying around etc... there will be other clubs up and around there that weren't there last season like Aston Villa and Newcastle.
I'm not sure about West Ham, they have this Baby Bentley generation of players and surely they are only fuelling this further by offering players ridiculous wages that are over inflated. I mean is Darren Bent a twice capped player really worth 17 million and 75,000 a week? That makes him worth more than soooo many strikers with far more experience and far more goals than him (Ipswich would have been happy they get nearly 3 mill out of it.) It just shows the over inflated prices of English youngsters....
Here are my predictions for top 4 and relegated teams:
Top 4:
Man Utd
Chelsea
Liverpool
Tottenham
Bottom 3:
Derby
Fulham
Wigan
Think spurs will hit top 4, they've got a young side and Martin Jol is a great manager. I think Henry will finally leave Arsenal realising that he can't help take these youngsters any further, think Wenger will be gone at end of season. Think Man Utd will dominate league again, they have signed quality, chuck in maybe a new striker and they are there. Don't Liverpool will win the title quite yet, but these things take time and I have no doubt they will get there in the next few years...
As for bottom 3, I think Wigan will struggle real bad, fulham are surely due to take the drop after years of underspending and overselling and I think Derby will give it a really good go but ultimately struggle.

To be fair, most of Rafa's 'shite' signings such as Josemi, Nunez, Kromkamp, Pellegrino, and Morientes (who was hardly shite, just a little underwhelming) were all shipped out pretty quickly. The likes of Fowler and Zenden may have failed to perform, but the experience of players such as those two counts for a lot off the pitch. Overall, I think Rafa's performance in the transfer market has been highly impressive.

Rooney scored 20+ goals and his work rate has been class all season. The fact ignorant people expect him to be scoring 2 goals every game and call his form "shit" when that doesnt happen, suggests you dont understand his role in our team and what sort of influence he has on a game, as its far more important then just scoring.
Heinze has been classy for us since he arrived. Great agression, great tackle succession and rarely dissapoints. Replace agression with technique, and the same applies for Rio.
The fact you pinpoint maybe Scholes's only flaw, says it all really. The lad is one of the most technically gifted central midfield playmakers, the premiership will ever see. True class.
And Ant you know nothing about me, so why try to attack my support on a constant basis? Irony or what?
You also have started an argument by throwing out personal insults, just because i dont agree Rafa is great in the transfer market. Immature or what? The fact i tried to straighten things out with you on msn and you blocked me for no apparent reason + you are now trying to start them back up again, says it all really. You are a silly kid

Ferdinand gets into the United Squad, because he is technically 1 of the best defenders in europe. He reads things before they happen and prevents the danger, he has alot of pace + stamina and his form in a United shirt has always been decent. He is the reason we are usually strong at the back and has been for 5 years.
Having an all out agressive tackler like Vidic, partnered by the more technically based defender like your Rio Ferdinand is the perfect combination.
This season is proof. The fact he plays for england is because of how good he is for us, not the other way round. And the fact you criticise Rio's role for england, shows you are an idiot seeing as he has been our best central defender in the last 2 world cups.

Doesn't look like this has been posted as another liverpool-man utd arguement is going on:
Seventeen transfers and five Premier League clubs have been named in Lord Stevens' final report into alleged transfer irregularities.
Deals involving Chelsea, Middlesbrough, Bolton, Portsmouth and Newcastle have been highlighted in the report.
But there is no evidence of irregular payments to club officials or players.
Managers Sam Allardyce and Graeme Souness have been mentioned in Lord Stevens' report along with 15 agents, including Pini Zahavi.
Interview: Agents' spokesman Chris Heaton-Harris
Interview: Barry Silkman
There was a perceived conflict of interest with Newcastle boss Allardyce and his former agent son Craig and Bolton Wanderers.
Stevens also reported "inconsistencies in evidence" provided by the former Newcastle manager Souness and Kenneth Shepherd, son of Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd.
Zahavi did not open his bank accounts for inspection and is accused of failing to co-operate fully with the inquiry.
The report also recommended that Fifa should investigate Zahavi's conduct.
The 17 transfers 'uncleared':
Bolton
Ali Al-Habsi, Tal Ben Haim, Blessing Kaku, Julio Correia.
Chelsea
Didier Drogba, Petr Cech, Michael Essien.
Middlesbrough
Fabio Rochemback, Yakubu.
Newcastle
Jean Alain Boumsong, Emre Belozoglu, Amady Faye, Albert Luque.
Portsmouth
Collins Mbesuma, Benjani Mwaruwari, Aliou Cisse.
One other transfer has not yet been disclosed.
Lord Stevens said in a statement: "Many lessons have been learned and strict adherence to and enforcement of the recommendations should ensure that the game and the transfer market can proceed in an untainted and transparent manner."
With regards to the future, the Premier League and the FA have agreed to carry out a random audit of selected transfers from each window in order to further ensure compliance
The Premier League will now send the findings to the FA and Fifa.
Football agents Zahavi and Barry Silkman were unhappy with claims they did not co-operate with Stevens' inquiry.
Zahavi admitted refusing to open his private bank account for inspection but he claims that no other foreign agent was as co-operative as him. Zahavi said: "It is ridiculous for agents to be condemned while the clubs are all supposed to be perfect."
Silkman added: "It is an absolute total lie. A complete lie. Whoever he is, Lord Stevens, he is a liar. The people who have done this are liars.
"I co-operated 100%. I went to see them with my lawyer and showed them every single bank statement.
"They saw money coming into my account and money going out of my account."
In a statement through his solicitors, Souness said: "I cannot understand why my name features in this report."
Portsmouth and Newcastle feel they have been vindicated by the findings of the inquiry.
A statement issued by Pompey said: "We're not surprised the club and our officials have been exonerated by the report.
"Although there are transfers involving Portsmouth FC, the continuing investigations are into the agents and not the club.
"We always act in accordance with Premier League rules and have fully co-operated with this investigation."
Newcastle's statement read: "The report makes clear that Newcastle officials have done nothing wrong and have at all times offered their full co-operation."
Newcastle also called on the agents named to "assist the inquiry in resolving their outstanding queries as soon as possible."
An FA spokesman said: "Following the final report of the Premier League's Quest Inquiry, the FA will give full consideration to its contents and the documentation that is due to be passed on by the Premier League and Quest."
The Premier League and the FA have agreed to carry out random spot-checks on future transfers using Quest.

And, never ever doubt the talent that is Heinze. :D Quality guy, just a shame that he's a shadow of what he once was. If he does stay with us next year, I hope he regains back his fitness and hunger.

Have to say I agree...it happened in the last thread and its getting very zzzzzz..... Your even referring to convos on MSN, (that none of us care about...) you've had so why not just keep it there....
Man Utd won the title last year, they proved to be the most consistent team over 38 league games hence why they ended up with more points... end of story!
I mean today the first names in the year long bung inquiry have been announced there are so many issues concerning that, all of which are more interesting on the merits of who is better than who...
It looks like they aren't blaming much on the clubs themselves more the agents with the exception of Big Sam where they have admitted there is a conflict of interest with his son, something that was highlighted in the Panorama special. Souness and Shepard thing seems like they've said contrasting things...
On my side of things, Pompey have said their were no agents fees in two of the transfers, which is the problem as there were none announced if they are telling the truth then fair enough.
I wonder what the punishment would be. Say if all the teams were found guilty would the FA have the guts to say relegate the teams? (which would have happened in the past and likely abroad, look at Juventus for bribing refs) I doubt they would. I think likely the big scalps will all be agents rather than managers or clubs, they do need a big scalp though much like George Graham was when he got banned.

Reds chief refuses to panic buy
Benitez has made only three signings so far this summer
Liverpool's co-owner George Gillett insists he will sanction the level of spending that boss Rafa Benitez has demanded - but not for the sake of it.
Reds fans have become frustrated with the club's lack of action in the transfer market so far this summer.
Gillett told The Times: "I sense that kind of pressure building from the media - but we are working on things.
"Rafa has a programme under way and, as that unfolds, that will be the time for us to be judged, not now."
Following Liverpool's defeat by AC Milan in the Champions League on 23 May, Benitez said Liverpool must "spend big and spend now" to close the gap on Manchester United and Chelsea at the top of the Premiership.
What we've said and what Rafa has said was that we had a programme and he would share that with us and that we would support it
George Gillett
He has brought in Andrey Voronin on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen and signed Hungarian teenagers Kristian Nemeth and Andras Simon.
The Reds are also close to wrapping up a £6m deal for Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva.
But the established world-class signings expected by supporters after the arrival of Gillett and co-owner Tom Hicks have not yet materialised.
"We're not going to do something just to try to prove something," Gillett explained.
"What we've said and what Rafa has said was that we had a programme and he would share that with us and that we would support it.
"The first part was that we identified a number of our existing star players (Jose Reina, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso) whom Rafa wanted to sign on long-term contracts.
"That was the first step and it has been done. Now we're moving on to phase two, which is bringing players in."

Some more transfer news about Pompey:
Portsmouth are in the 'driving seat' to sign Alou Diarra, according to Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas.
The France international is one of Harry Redknapp's prime transfer targets, although he has doubted the likelihood of a deal.
Werder Bremen have also expressed an interest in Diarra, who wants to quit the French champions in search of regular first-team football.
The latest reports in France suggest a bid of €9million (£6million) will be enough to tempt Lyon into a sale.
Pompey are rumoured to have offered close to that figure already and an increased bid is on the cards.
Lyon chairman Aulas has confirmed that the Premier League club are currently the favourites to sign the former Liverpool youngster.
"Portsmouth are in the driving seat," Aulas told the French media.
"Diarra could leave in the coming days."
Redknapp has been desperate to strengthen his strike-force, but the Pompey manager has also acknowledged a wish to bring in a new midfielder.
Great news for us, we seem to be out and about for a lot of midfielders got Muntari and now this would tie in with rumours that Gary O'Neil is off to Middlesborough as part of deal for Yakubu. Personally don't want that to happen GON is so tireless and loyal and Yakubu is just such a rebel...

Thing that would worry me about Liverpool is that waiting too long, after making your interest for a player public - can be fatal. It has happened to us in the past and made us miss out on players who would of made our team so much stronger and as a result we have gone into campaigns alot weaker, then we would of been.

I agree with this. When you usually go through the process of buying players, it is usually like a game of tug of war, and can take up to months to sign a single player.
Team A makes bid.
Team B refuses to sell player.

That's great from the club's financial point of view, but sometimes the only way to get a certain player to a club is to pay a stupid amount of money. It's a risk, but sometimes there really is no other way. Wayne Rooney from Everton to United is a good example of this.

Liverpool's "supposed" interest in all these players and more has been made public. Seeing as all these players would be wanted by nearly every top club in europe, it makes Liverpools chances of getting them slimmer as other interested clubs will move in faster.
If Liverpool want to win the league, they need to sign at least 3 players. That is all im saying :)

Arsenal Looking for a YNWA Type Song...
...I know the atmosphere is bad but do you think ANY of the proposed songs would work.
_____________
A healthy debate on the onlinegooner forum has led to this potential shortlist to do for Ashburton Grove what ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ does for Anfield
A while back – late last year, we had this exclusive and this response raising the idea of an Arsenal anthem to give our new stadium an equivalent to the stirring ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ sung by Liverpool fans.
Then in April, I revived the idea on this thread on the onlinegooner forum. A decent debate has continued for a couple of months and now I am putting forward a provisional shortlist. Assuming no major objections (I’ll allow a week for appeals or something wonderful that no-one’s thought of), these will go to a referendum vote which I hope other Arsenal sites will link to so we can have a pretty comprehensive election of a favoured tune to approach the club with – through redaction.
For all the doom-mongers out there the idea is that we persuade the club to play the song over the PA system before the teams come out, initially putting the words on the videoscreens. It will take a while to catch on, but come the day of a big, big game, the hope is that a majority of the crowd will add their voices and create an atmosphere akin to that at Anfield before, for example, their big European games over the last three seasons against the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona. A lot of people are quite negative about the possibilities of this taking off, but my way of thinking is that if 10,000 people will sing it (realistically, the redsection get into it and it gradually spreads), in time, the majority of the crowd will join in if they are sufficiently moved/inspired. It will take a couple of seasons to really take hold, but if we persevere, we could have something really special. This is the first part of an initiative here at onlinegooner to improve matchday atmosphere at the new stadium.
The criteria that I first mooted was that the song should have the following qualities…
Should be stirring enough to send shivers down the back of your neck
Therefore, not too fast or poppy
Capability for a good sing-along
Therefore, already fairly familiar to many in its own right
Probably unlikely to have been written since 1980 due to the average age of the Arsenal crowd
Embodying the spirit of Arsenal or the relationship between the team and fans in the lyrics in some way
Not have strong associations with another club for any reason.
I should clarify that this is not ‘run out’ music but something to build up the atmosphere before the players walk out, finishing when they are lined up in the tunnel.
At this point, I’ll quote a forum posting on the subject from ‘singup4theArse’, just to echo the above… “If you want to get an anthem going you have to find the kind of song – that’s old enough for everyone to identify with. So out go all the hits of the last decade . Blue moon/You’ll Never Walk Alone/Keep Right On/Dehlila/Bubbles all have one thing in common. They are old songs. They've stood the test of time; they are slightly absurd and naff in their own way and I suspect that’s what's made them 'catchy' and later, popular with fans. Having said that the song also has to have broad appeal. I can't see the average Cypriot/Black/Irish/Asian kid singing 'Knees Up Mother Brown'.”
So here is the proposed shortlist, in alphabetical order
Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon and Garfunkel)
Can’t Help Falling In Love With You (Elvis Presley)
Danny Boy (Traditional)
He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother (The Hollies)
I Only Have Eyes For You (Various)
Lean On Me (Bill Withers)
Over The Rainbow (Judy Garland)
Streets of London (Ralph McTell)
The Impossible Dream (Andy Williams)
The following fitted the criteria, but there was not quite enough enthusiasm for them…
Hangbags And Gladrags (Rod Stewart)
Let It Be (The Beatles)
My Way (Frank Sinatra)
The Green Green Grass Of Home (Tom Jones)
The Wonder Of You (Elvis Presley)
You've Lost That Lovin’ Feeling (Righteous Brothers)
There have been many other suggestions, which haven’t made the shortlist, for reasons such as being…
Too jaunty/fast/poppy (popular choice ‘Maybe It’s Because I’m A Londoner falls into this trap)
Already an established Arsenal song/chant – (eg Good Old Arsenal) which is not what we are trying to achieve here – those have been around for long enough already and have not been naturally adopted by the crowd
Too recent (eg Angels by Robbie Williams)
Strong connections with another club (eg Wonderwall)
Already used by another club
Too obscure
Too strong a specific association with one particular country/culture (okay, you could argue Danny Boy should be disqualified for this, but the song was not written with Ireland in mind, simply adopted by them and the sheer strength of positive feedback on the forum for this seems to suggest that people see the song as more than representing the Emerald Isle).
For what it’s worth, the feedback so far has ‘The Impossible Dream’ as the most popular choice (although some argue it’s a bit too long and slow to really pick up), however, when we post the referendum (in a week’s time, as the next onlinegooner referendum) the numbers voting will be far greater than those who have so far discussed it on the forum, as I will be contacting other Arsenal websites to ask them to mention the vote on their own sites and link to it. Then we’ll have a truly democratic vote of Arsenal fans determining which ‘anthem’ we will approach the club to try.
As for the referendum – I think we have the capability of more than five choices, but if not, I’ll take subsequent forum postings (under the further discussion section) as the determining factor. I’ll also consider any appeals regarding what is and isn’t on the shortlist, if they are made with strong conviction by enough posters. The shortlist is not set in stone, but an attempt at pulling together the two months of debate on the forum since the original posting discussing this idea. Watch this space and I will post another piece next week once the final vote has gone live.

I don't think Branscombe from the Echo has any reason too lie when talking about liverpool's spending policy this summer. Sources will always leak information out of the club. Of course Gillette and Hicks are gonna say everything is okay in public as they have too.
Yes there is money but not money for the likes of Eto'o. £30m+ is out of liverpool's budget. If you go on the example of Malouda who will probably go Chelsea because they are ready to offer £4m more than liverpool things don't look too great.
I don't think those sort of things would work, I mean it wasn't a huge comittee that made the Celtic and Liverpool fans pick up YNWA or the West Ham fans with I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles, it's just something that happens :)
but good luck to them, because the atmosphere that you get at Celtic Park on European nights when the whole stadium is belting out YNWA is just amazing

Bascombe has lost all contacts with the club since the new guys came in.
It's just a petty little swipe, believe me it's just paper talk.
Bascombe did get his information off Dave Usher on TLW, but he had a fall out with Bascombe.
Gillette and Hicks: We start getting a new stadium together
They have done, to dramatic fucking effect I might add
Gillette and Hicks: We will offer players contracts
They Have Done, succesfully
Gillette and Hicks: Phase two the process of signing players
Under Way
I have every confidence they will get what Rafa wants.

Ever thought that Rafa might not want Eto'o?
Rafa hasn't come out and said he wants Eto'o it's paper talk, besides I do think £30 million is way too much a risk for a foreign striker, a risk Rafa doesn't want to take, and neither does George and Tom.
Heres one for you, Owen for £9 Million, Eto'o for £30 million.
Owen all the time....
As for Malouda, If Rafa really wants him he will get him.
oh and Ant we likely to see the new Liverpool stadium pics today?
The plans went forward to the council today as far as I know. Hence the "prediction" you will see the stadium pictures soon.
I'd imagine the council will hand them over to the Liverpool Echo and various other media sources within a few days.

Blimey we've actualy tried to sign a player, it was rejected like but still.
Colchester have had a £200,000 bid for QPR striker Ray Jones rejected.
Jones, who signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at Loftus Road in January, has made 39 appearances and scored five goals.
Chairman Gianni Paladini told QPR's website: "We are not going to sell our best players unless the price is right and Ray has a part in our future."
The Layer Road club are considering going back to the Londoners with an improved offer for the 18-year-old.
Would love to sign him, we wont get him though. Fulham bid 1.5 million for him in January ffs. Can't remember the last time we spent money on a player either.

Liverpool, Arsenal invited to bid for Real Madrid's Robinho
tribalfooball.com - June 19, 2007
Arsenal will be invited to bid for Real Madrid winger Robinho this summer.
El Mundo Deportivo says Real chiefs intend to cash in on Robinho to fund a bid for AC Milan midfield ace Kaka. The Brazil international midfielder is regarded as the only player on Real's books capable of raising a big enough fee to strengthen their hand in negotiations for Kaka.
Only in January, Robinho admitted that AC Milan had expressed interest in him, while Arsenal moved for the former Santos star last summer, but were put off by Real's £15 million asking price.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez will monitor developments closely, particularly after losing out to Manchester United for Nani earlier this month.

Glad Rosicky's howler made it in, though Iw as expecting the video to be a 10 minute 'highlights' of Arsenal's 0-0 with CSKA Moscow last season, of which that Rosicky miss took place, and Cesc missed an open goal after rounding the keeper.

If the deal does happen, then Torres is a good player. But worth 25 million? Hell no, after seeing him play on numerous occasions for club and country he isnt worth 12. Good, but definetly overrated - nothing about him screams out "Goal Hit man!".

Another typical case of Liverpool fans overrating their players and using the rivarly with Man United, as an avenue to stupidly underrate 1 of their key players.

Why is Steven Taylor blaming Bentley and Agbonlahor for going AWOL? Is he just trying to put the blame on someone else when really it's their own fault for conceding a goal a minute before full-time. I reckon he is.
Besides, wasn't Bentley injured? And MON didn't want Agbonlahor to play in the Tournament because of how much he played for Villa this season.

The Mirror reckon Newcastle have agreed to sign Alan Smith for 3.5m

£3.5m that is bloody cheap. that will be one hell of a signing.

I hope he doesn't go, would rather he stayed. Like Saha, the problem with Smith is keeping him fit.

I saw it reported in the BBC Football Gossip page, but I take it that they just do a roundup of what all the papers are saying.

Scotland need to call up Agbonlahor and play him so he cannot play for England. Agbonlahor should seriously consider it as he is never gonna break into the England squad.
oh and Steven Taylor should be questioning why England are technically poor and cannot keep the ball.

I disagree and think the freak leg break is too active in your memory. Because bar that one off, he rarely has long time off injured. Smithy will be a big loss to us
Saha = injury prone.
But im glad fergie is keeping him, cos when hes fit he is amazing.

Given the choice, Agbonlahor will want to play for England, and I reckon he will, he played an absolute blinder this season and if he continues to play as well as that in the next few years, then he must be in the England squad.
But then, he does play for the Villa, so...

if he plays that well how long will he be playing for villa?

Being a Villa fan himself, he'll probably want to stay for the rest of his career, like what Ian Taylor and Lee Hendrie planned to do before him, only to be sold when they reached their thirties, so I'd say he'll be at Villa for 10 years.
