This is a thread for discussion of all things final fantasy, games, characters, films, fan fiction, whatever else could be related to this massive topic. Just kind of wanted to stop the meaningless post thread from getting cluttered, and this is one pretty broad topic so I doubt it'd die out of there.
I've only ever played one FF, and that was FFX, which I quite liked after getting into it. I also never knew the al bhed had spiral pupils until a while after I played FF, guess I just don't stare into the eyes of RPG heroinnes enough.
Anyway, Final Fantasy and beyond, discuss it here and not in the MoTD thread!

Thought this wou;d be more of an other console topic but never mind.
Just got FF12 and even though its an alright games feels a bit more like a cross between an MMORPG and kingdom hearts.
Not my favourite final fantasy even though every single review seems to hail it as the best thing ever to hit a console.
The story is good, system is meh. Seems dumbed down in my opinion, the gambits can be set in a way where you don't actually have to do anything at all. Heres to hoping that squares next endevour doesn't just get rid of battles altogether.
And I don't like Vaan. Seems like a sequal to Tidus, a character type that should be destroyed. That whiny, pre-adolescent do-gooder thats overshadowed by the awesome cast around them.
Yeah, I guess thats what videogames have over books; a greater sense of involvement and consequence relating to the story. Still I with they'd spend a good few years and make an FF thats for everyone, you know, something that isn't marred by it's mechanics and something that's believable. Unlike fucking blitzball where they can breathe underwater for ridiculous amounts of time without any explanation as to why. I hate that!
Blitzball made no sense. Like how gravity and upthrust were completely ignored. And that the ball was incredibly aerodynamic underwater:hmm: and the Jecht shot... Blitzball was still kinda fun though.

Yea I've got it. My brothers crazy over it but I just don't have the time to level up for hours upon hours every day.
Got like a level 14 thief or something.
The lack of any real story probably helped with my loss of interest.

Wow, I just realised I've actually played a bit of FF1 and FF3, silly me! Waiting on a port of...FF7? Though. Whatever is the really popular one that Advent Children was made from.
Yes, this thread may exist elsewhere, but someone in MoTD didn't want to make a thread for the topic because wherever the thread is dead, and I think also that the Final Fantasy series has become much more than a game title.
Speaking of more than a game, can anyone who's seen Spirits Within tell me if it's a good film worth watching? It's been floating around my home for a long while now, but I never bothered watching it. Is it based off one of the games in particular?

I just played FF VII, X, XII and Tactics Advance. VII is hugely overrated and so is X. They're both boring games, even though VII has a great story. XII is freaking awesome and so is Tactics Advance.
About the movies, the first one was pretty cool even though it barely had anything to do with FF and Advent Children was just miling. Great soundtrack and fight scenes, but the story is very poor.
Also, Fran is giga hot

I've been playing Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for about 55 hours before Shorty told me about how the AP worked! 55 hours over the course of a few months is suddenly rocketing up fast as I realise there's a whole new game here :P
Loved Advet Children, but never really been all that great at the levelling-up aspect of the game.

Man I love Final Fantasy. I spent 40 quid on ebay last year for FFVII in its original box in mint condition. I don't even spend 40 quid on games that are new; that's how much I love it.
I also have the two Final Fantasy films.
However, even though I love FF7 and the films to death.... I haven't played any other Final Fantasy games.... I've heard to many bad things about the series since FF7.

Give IX a chance Wes, normally people who like VII seem to like IX aswell, the battle system isn't too complex and it has a lot of good characters.

Assuming you have FF 7 for the pc.
You can buy the game then download a Playstation emulator so you can play it on your pc.
May have a couple of quirks in it but its altogether playable and a popular method. Not an official method but even so the official ports are not very friendly. Shame really, I love ff7/8 on the pc so much more than the ps but I need to get a pc hooked up with old hardware to play them properly.

Can anyone perhaps help me? I´m trying to remember and old FF game i used to play but i can´t remember which.
The game starts that an asteroid falls to the ground near you and you meat 2 persons, a girl and some that´s lost his memory.
And you traveled on water using a boat dragged by some huge sea creature.
Only remember it being a FF game because it has a chocobo in it

Just been playing FFIX. I've just finished the first disc. Would be playing it some more but I've got football training.
Never played a Final Fantasy game. In fact, the only one I've seen quite a bit of is XII, as my girlfriend received a PAL copy three weeks ago to review for her magazine. That was the first one she'd played, too, and was impressed. I thought it looked pretty good too, but a bit too combat heavy.

I've played FF1 and FF2 (the new versions made for Gameboy Advance) they were fun, but i got stuck at the end :( and haven't played since.
Then theres Final Fantasy Tactics advance.. AWESOME! most (whats the word when you can't stop playing it?) game ever :P sorry, but its so awesome, especially since it has 300 missions to complete!!!
Then theres Crystal Chronicles... what was the point of that.... i found there was no real story :S just having to get stronger and stronger and going to same old places just to fill your latern to keep the town going.. pointless.
Final Fantasy X and X-2, great games... it changed my life :P X-2 was ok, but just a bit lacking of the FFX it sequeled to. However X was perfect in my eyes! Bring on FFXII!!!!! are you all getting the game?
Also i didn't like movies because spirits within had absolutely nothing to do with FF and spirits within wasn't a great thriller because i haven't played FF7.

Apparently an almost perfect port. I would agree if it wasn't for a little lag while travelling on the map.

Final fantasy III is a pretty good RPG. It may not be the best Final Fantasy but as RPG's come its up there. Especially on the DS with its lack of RPg goodness. I've said RPG too much.
Plus I don't think they will be released on VC just yet. Not while they are making £30 a game.

No, IV is an amazing final fantasy but it just fell short of being my favourite, the story, the twists and the gameplay is just brilliant. One of my favourite all time games.

The redone versions are very much worth getting, Mariosmentor pretty much hit the target when he said they probably wont release on VC for quite a while, as they are earning alot off the GBA titles.
The only redone versions i'd say that arent worth the money is Dawn of Souls, as FFI and FFII arent very good games at all, but the extra content does make them alot more interesting.
Final Fantasy III is worth getting I'd say, I havent played far in but I like what i've seen, but the battle system is very dated. No ATB, just your typical old turn based RPG. Which may be a hit or a miss, depends on your preference.

I have played and finished FF games VI, VII, VIII, X, X-2 and all of them were great games. I loved FF VIII to bits and regard it as one of my top 10 games that I have played.

I've been playin FFX for a couple of hours now, and all it seems to be is watching a movie, running a coupel of seconds, fighting with 3 different sets of enemies, killing them in about 5 seconds. Hearing that same tone over again (which I like) and then watching more of a movie.
I hope the rest of the game/the other games arent in this style.
Don't get me wrong Its stunning what I've played, for my first ever FF rpg, however its not..great.

If I didn't have such a problem with VIII I'd say X was my worst Final Fantasy, I even thought X-2 was better.

FF games are very story driven and you will see ALOT of movies while playing them but most of them are outstanding. I especially love the main theme music in FFX.

Maybe so but I also felt that FFX was a bit too much story driven. To the point that any sort of freedom was impaired.
You go about 70% through the game before your actually able to go anywhere without the game holding your hand leading you where you had to go next.
Come to think of it. FFX is more like one 60hr long path heading straight to Zanarkand.
Exploration was something I loved in FF and it lacked in FFX.

I totally agree with you. FFX wasnt free at all, even FFX-2 gave you choices of what to do and where to go. Not being able to walk around the map was a sorely missed option. Also Tidus was an annoying main character.

Vaan is ridiculous.
I don't know what he is supposed to be.
So many occasions he does things that make me cringe, bumbling idiot things.
Surrounded by characters that are either wise/noble/street smart he stands out as the clown of the party which doesn't go down in my books.
X wasn't very good, neither was XI. But XII looks amazing and I will be picking it up tomorrow (today technically).

I'd really like to get into modern Final Fantasy games. I loved the snes era games and FFVII/IX but haven't played past there. I've even thought briefly about buying a PS2 a couple of times with that as a key factor in the concept, but they're still too expensive :(

I do like the fighting system in it, can be fun sometimes.
The music is great in the game aswell.
Are the FF games set one after the other? As I thought X was a strange place to start off, but I wanted a game and that was there. Will I have to play XI to be able to understand XII? Or is it a totally new main character story etc?
I agree with who said Tidus is an annoying main character. Wakka's pretty funny I might add.

XI is totally different to any other FF. So much so thats there's debate whether it should actually be titled Final Fantasy.
But in answer to your question no, they are not true sequels. The only one being X-2 being a sequel of X, and that is defienetly not a must have title.
XII however does share the same world, Ivalice, with FF Tactics and Tactics Advanced.

Worst thing about XII, its done an FFIX on us. The graphics have tried to be so detailed and complex, that when the chracter is just running around his armour looks plain grainy, jaggied and ugly. Where as in say X, it wasn't so bad, and XI it definitely wasn't at all bad.

i was going to say how shite the graphics are, and how the battle system sucks balls. i am. cgi still rules, but its lost without turnbased battles
I wish i have played mroe of the game but from what i can tell the battle system just seems like X-2 but with more running about. but saying this i haven't even got another party member yet so i have yet to experience the joys of the gambit system.
I REALLY like the art style ALOT more than X, the movement maybe be blurry and the detail grainy but this is a PS2 game-i have really bad blurryness cos i'm playing through composite on a HD TV. I have no other choice though *sigh*

The lack of turnbased battles has killed this game for a mate of mine. I was waiting to see what he said about it before I bought it as we have the same taste in RPGs. This coupled with the fact that many say the story and characters in this are very disappointing means I wont be picking this up for a while now.

I think what made FFVII easy was the simplicity of the Materia system where as FFVIII had the Junction system which took some getting used to coupled with the fact that the enemies levelled up with you.

All I want is IX with the X battle system, where you can change characters and the like. The graphics, Im doubting will be good if I start playing IX again. Its the 360's fault. Damn it.

The junction system got on my tits, I mean I was only 8 or 9 when I got it and when I got to a hard boss I played the game over again to build my strength up...
Either way FF8 was a graphical master piece, storyline was unbelieveable, and it was addictive despite being fustrating in times...

Graphics are shit. I hate the battle system.

The graphics are out dated, if you played the game now it wouldn't be up to scratch graphically, but the game really got the most out of the console, the cinematics where incredible and the in game graphics where among the best around...
If you cannot acknowledge the quality of graphics from different era's considering the technological advancements then I feel sorry for you...
FF8 was a graphical masterpiece...No Question...
The battle system however is all down to a matter of personal preference, I think it was needed to be played by people willing to put the time and effort into it...

Hang On....I love Metal Gear Solid 3..The game is very good graphically, especially the mountain scene
What is the point you are trying to make?

Your telling me that i think the graphics are shit compared to other technologically advanced systems, but MGS3 has amazing graphics and its old, and on the same system.

Nope what I was saying was, that considering the technoligcal advacements around the time FF8 was released then FF8 took full advantage and was a game with visuals ahead of its time...
You are making no sense at alll

Who do you think the best non lead character was in a FF game?
I would have to say its a close call between Vivi and Auron. Auron was just so B.A. he just oozed cool. Vivi on the other hand was just such a likable character due to his innocence but tick him off and you would pay!

The breakthrough character of FFX, compared to the rest of the cast Auron was amazing, he kept is cool, was a good fighter, and his look was simply badass.
And Auron in all of his badassness also managed to make a fantastic transition to Kingdom Hearts 2, where he was still very cool.
Seifer. Simply put. In fact the whole supporting cast from VIII. Other notable mentions are Vivi and Wakka.
And Auron!

You know, either im stupid or just totally lethargic, but I've just realised that in every FF there's a character called CID that has something to do with Airships. Odd.
As for fave characters, I always liked Cloud, cause I actually thought he was quite a bit like me. Other notable mentions go to the always lovable Vivi, Wakka, Aeris and Barrett.

yep Cids been a character in every FF game, don't ask me why though.

I always like Cid from FFX. He's the equivilant of Richard Dawkins, where Al Bhed = atheists and Yevonites = catholics.

Cid from FFX is a piece of shit. A big one. His role is minimal and he's not stylish.

Is there actually anywhere that sells the Soundtracks for VII through to X? Or would it have to be an ebay job?

Get The Black Mages albums. It's Nobuo Uematsu (the composer of many Final Fantasy songs and soundtracks) rock band, they perform various tracks from the game.
Those Who Fight Further (The boss theme from VII) is especially good.

The Final Fantasy 7 boss music was and probably will be my favorite boss music (can't really recall the 12 one or 8 one didn't play 9-11). 7 and 8 were great games the lead males were nice and cold hearted (well), i'm still taking a while to break into 12 the battle system has split my judgement on the game, when i can beat an enemy i love it but when they're too tough it really makes me hate the game. I play in active too so when i'm losing things are going proper crazy. But Lady Ashe though....*woof woof* i'd fight to the death for that mini skirt....i mean her.
