Schpick, who's making the CPU? IBM? Intel... or someone else?

Uh, it's a PowerPC chip, it's going to be by IBM.

This was unveiled last night

http://www.apple.com/uk/powermac/

4x2.5Ghz G5 Cores with a 1.25Ghz FSB. Nice.

Do the sums: quad-core processing means four Velocity Engines and eight double-precision floating-point units for blistering performance of up to 76.6 gigaflops.

The powerbook range also got upgraded a little.

You can already build/buy, 4 way, dual core AMD Opteron systems, effectively 8 cores at 2.8Ghz each.

For example here is a Sun Fire V40z: http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/v40z/specs.jsp

Sure it's a server but holy shit, a workstation based on such a design would make you cream your pants.

But the dual dual core PowerMac doesn't?

But if you buy a Dual Opteron rig with similar specs to the Quad PowerMac's you'll be paying a hell of alot more.................and would you want to pay that bit of extra money just to run that buggy OS we all use aswell.

I can see these new PowerMac's improving render times a hell of alot............but I think another big factor with these new PowerMac's is that Apple have decided to ship Quadro FX's with them finally.

Still, the majority of artists aren't going to move over from Windows based machines just because Apple have decided to ship a decent workstation graphics card with their new Mac's.

(although they'll still all drool over the processor speeds)

The other thing is you need the software and in particular the OS to really take advantage of those cores. OS X actually does take advantage of such a system.

I'm sure it's no coincidence that these were announced the same day as the new professional photography package Apple unveiled. A media editors dream, no doubt :)
