"ASH doesn't use 2D and it doesn't use polygons. Instead, the game makes use of pre-rendered CG for its battle visuals. "

Question is what does it look like when not in a battle.

It looks like to me that the battles use pre-rendered visuals throughout the game. This includes all characters, and their actions found in battle (defensive moves, casting spells, using items, etc), then during the battles these videos are layered upon each other to give the impression of a full 3D battle.

I could be wrong though, but that's the only way I can think of how it's possible.

but how would the the DS handle thoes graphics?

The DS can perfectly run smooth video files, and there's quite a few compression tools out there available to developers, so that's not a problem.

But in reality, the DS couldn't render these results using a full 3D scene.

It's quite an exceptional technique they've got there, and I hope they can pull it off.

Interesting. I hope Final Fantasy III has pre-rendered backdrops so they can pack the characters with polygons.

Sounds like Donkey Kong Country....

Wow that looks amazing and interesting.
I'm fascinated by the idea to use prerendered characters. The camera angle in roundfights normally doesn't change so there's no need for a polygonal model and besides this looks much better.

Shame you won't like it since it's a tactical RPG :P

Isn't the technique going to be similar to the fight scenes in Golden Sun? Those were sprite animations that were made to seem 3D in a way but looked awesome. My jaw hit the flaw when I say that on the GBA.

Anybody else think the same?

"ASH doesn't use 2D and it doesn't use polygons. Instead, the game makes use of pre-rendered CG for its battle visuals. "

It seems to use sprites that are based on images captured from CG computer creations of the characters, backgrounds etc. I assume that they take images of characters etc from different angles and this will allow them to build animations for the character moving etc just like cartoons work. Its been used on many games in the past as it allows for very detailed art work but doesn't require polygons or textured polygons so can run better in the game environment, theirs a bit more too it than that but this is generally why the graphics look so good. Res evil zero and 1 used a similar technique for their backgrounds, but used complex lighting/rendering to get flat things to look 3D and thats why they had a lot more detail than res 4 does.
